Art "Tap" Harris - Middleweight 1970-1981
Beat Willie Warren, Renato Garcia, Leo Saenz. Lost to Sugar Ray Seales

Recovering from a hard drive crash so no photo updates for a while. Also having to rebuild some data in the EBC because my backup wasn't up to date.

Here's one I never expected to find. The original one-shot wonder. Fought one recorded bout in North America, getting the crap kicked out of him by middleweight Kid McCoy in 2 rounds. Stood 6' 5 1/2" weighed about 240 lbs. and hailed from the Netherlands. Claimed to be the clog-fighting champion. Henri J. Placke.

I've got a new background for the screen that displays a newly crowned champion, but this site won't let me post it because it's too big. If anyone is curious, I can likely attach it to an email.

OK. Here's a big one. Maybe the Holy Grail of missing photos. South Africa's George Boer Rodel. One posted earlier may actually have been a painting/sketch.

Cap,

Here is an account by Arnold Thomas in his book "heroes of the fancy", about Placke's first bout, which was in Australia, against the giant (nearly 7 feet) Australian Dick Barker.
"Barker is best remembered for his bout with Dutchman Harry Placke at Foley's Hall at Woollahra, Sydney in September 1895.
Placke who stood 6ft 6in and weighed over 16 stone, new nothing about boxing having never had the gloves on in his life. He had only recently arrived in Sydney and, being flat broke, agreed to fight the walking telegraph pole.
Barker was too good for the incredibly brace novice who was stopped in the thirteenth round, but not before he had the Queenslander on the verge of quitting a number of times.
Later that night Placke collapsed and lay in a coma for six days. He lay close to death many times but eventually recovered.
A benefit was held to raise funds for Placke, instigated by Larry Foley.
Little was heard of Harry for sometime until he surfaced in America in 1904 where he was ko-ed by Kid McCoy."
Sounds like he was a tough and brave bloke. Amazing that Cap found a pic of him.

Shane.
