We begin a 3 game series with manager Silver Borresen (32-6.9) and his Reds today. We are 5-7 against them so far this season and lost 2 of 3 to them in Cincinnati 3 weeks ago the last time we met. The are 2nd in the League in runs scored with 5.4 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 5.3). They are 4th in runs allowed with 5.1 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). League Park in Cincinnati is the 2nd easiest place in the Liberty League to hit a home run behind only Detroit.

In the bottom of the 9th, with us up a run, C Spider Sullivan (25-6.7) led off with a home run to tie the game. In the bottom of the 10th, with 1 out, we made an error to let a runner on base and then RF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9) tripled to win the game.

Bush allowed 5 hits (4 for extra bases), 5 walks and struck out 4.

Stevens gave us 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8.

We made 4 errors and Cincinnati made 5.

1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 2 hits with an inside-the-park home run, his second home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 2 hits iwth a double and a walk, but nothing to show for his troubles. RF Willie Kirby (24-2.1) hit a home run.

Rookie CF Ed Slonim (23-8.5) had 3 hits with a double, stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs. C Fred Smith (31-6.8) had 4 hits with a double and his 2nd home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 6 RBIs.

He has lost 5 in a row. 2 weeks ago he was looking like a sure thing for the Hurler Trophy. Rookie CF Sy Cullum (23-5.9) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Baltimore (12) at Kansas City (4): Sammy Berry (26-5.5) (2-2) over Al McClaughry (22-5.6) (19-23). Berry allowed 7 hits, 6 walks and struck out no one. The Cowboys made 12 errors. 1B Lou Knight (37-5.2) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Omaha (6) at Chicago (0): Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (15-13) over Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (27-18). Sprague allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 10. This was his 1st shutout of the season. Boston (13) at New York (12): Joe Peters (30-4.9) (18-12) over Jack Roberts (34-6.1) (21-18). Peters gave up at least 9 runs and 14 hits for the 3rd game in a row. Roberts has lost 5 in a row and has been pounded similarly for 3 straight games. C Frank Douglas (31-5.8) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Rookie CF Ed Tummino (24-5.8) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Boston (6) at New York (7): Jack Roberts (34-6.1) (22-18) over Charlie Morlock (37-6.7) (17-19). Boston scored 6 runs in the 1st 4 innings; New York scored 6 runs in the final 3, including 2 in the bottom of the 9th to win. 1B John Hilliard (26-7.2) hit a 2-run inside-the-park home run with 1 out to give the Gothams the victory. It was his 2nd home run of the day and 7th of the season. He had 4 hits, a walk and 6 RBIs. I think that is what is known as a one-man wrecking crew.

Indianapolis (6) at Rochester (7): Ed Hodges (26-3.2) (17-17) over Dad Marshall (27-4.4) (19-17). Hodges allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a walk and scored twice. C Jim Martin (25-5.0) had 3 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

He had 2 hits and stole a base. Wood allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Henson allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. SS Tug Crane (27-6.5) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

Indianapolis (5) at New York (8): Miah Turner (25-5.3) (18-20) over Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (9-21). Indianapolis out-hit New York 12 to 7, but made 10 errors. Turner allowed 12 hits, no walks and struck out 7. Giddens had to leave in the 6th with back problems, but they say he'll be fine in a week or so. CF Ed Moody (30-6.9) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.

Grand National Association:
Milwaukee (14) at Brooklyn (5): Dan Burton (31-4.9) (19-24) over Al Green (23-3.8) (24-16). Burton allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a walk and scored 2 runs. Green has now lost 6 in a row. 2B Lou Bohus (26-5.4) had 4 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Chicago (4) at Kansas City (5): Al McClaughry (22-5.6) (20-23) over Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (27-19). With 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, 1B Gus Sugar (34-4.6) hit an RBI single to win the game. He had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. McClaughry allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI and got caught stealing. Stanley allowed 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Manager/CF Connie Frenette (31-4.7) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs, including the game winner.


Down in the Southern League (B), Al Bedingfield (23-2.8) of the Augusta Browns pitched a no-hitter against the Chattanooga Lookouts and won 7 to 0. He walked 3 and struck out 5. He is now 25-16 with a 2.19 ERA on the season. His Browns are in 2nd place, 1 game behind the Macon Hornets.

We begin a 3 game series with manager Harry Lashley (44-5.5) and his Keystones today. We are 8-1 against them so far this season, but they won the last one, beating us 10-4 in Detroit on July 10th. They are 7th in the League in runs scored with 4.8 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 5.3). They are 7th in runs allowed with 6.0 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 4.0). Their Recreation Park is the most even-handed park in the League, slightly favoring the pitchers.

The Colts scored twice in the top of the inning to take the lead, but SS Fred Umbaugh (25-5.4) hit a 2-run triple with 1 out in the bottom of the inning to give the Cowboys the win. For Chicago, SS Bob Robertson (23-4.1) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases and had 2 RBIs. 2B Henry Potter (32-6.4) pulled a back muscle and will likely miss 7 to 8 weeks.
