Catching

CATCHING
Shane Jackson-L (26) came here via an odd path. Was drafted by Chicago in the 2nd round of the 2013 draft out of HS, was then traded to Dayton in 2017 for Esteban Flores and a 1st rounder. Ended up trading back for him in 2020, acquiring another Catcher, Ron Moore, who's a top prospect in AAA right now, in another trade to get a higher 1st round pick. Was a 2021 All Star and and had a monster season last year, hitting .272-24-66 in 127 games while splitting some time with George Knox. The everyday job is officially his as he breaks in the heir apparent. Career Def Eff of 1.060 and has thrown out 29.3% of baserunners.
Alex Vela-R (21) The heir apparent. Hit .310/.353/.442 in 120 AAA games last year. Already grades as a 20 arm (1-20 scale) and a 15 Catcher. Needs time to season defensively, but has a very good bat. Runs exceptionally well for a backstop. Outstanding worker and a popular clubhouse guy too. Acquired from Boston, along with top prospect Ramon Castro, in December of 2020 for Eric Arnold and Vinicius Montaury.

The infield:

THE INFIELD:
Breaking with the same 6 we broke with last year. The league premier offensive infield returns.
1B Pedro Salinas-R (29) Entering his 6th full season, a former Rookie of the Year and 3 time all star. In 5 full seasons he's hit .298/.401/.529 for a career .931 OPS with 167 homers and 595 RBI's. Managed to sign him to an incredibly team friendly deal prior to 2020 that he has 2 more seasons, and a club option at 6.4M, remaining on.
1B/DH Earl Shaw-L (24) Had a monster breakout campaign last year, hitting .311-43-130 to help Chicago in its world series run. In 293 games has hit 68 HR's and driven in 212. Lifetime .397 OBP.
2B Jeffrey Hudson-L (29) First real big ticket free agent the club ever signed. The 2017 Hank Aaron Award winner and IBL All Decade 2B, Hudson is a 7 time All star and 2 time gold glove winner (including last season). In 1169 career games he's hit .302/.390/.522 with 255 HR's and 882 RBI's. Since taking an everyday job has never appeared in less than 150 games.
3B Raul Miranda-R (26) Coming off a career offensive year that saw him hit .289/.385/.453 with 17 HR's and 88 RBI's in 152 games, with 30 2B's. Committed an alarming number of errors last season, 22, but has a career .996 EFF at 3B in 317 games. Good teammate and growing into a leader.
SS-Andre Blakeway-R (27) A 2 time GG winner at short, had, for him, a disappointing season last year hitting .278/.376/.386 (all career lows with exception of his rookie season). He's a premier defender who accels at getting on base when he's right. Last year was the first season he appeared in less than 148 games.
IF-Massimiliano Lorenzelli-R (30) Provides veteran leadership and stability to the group. In his 11th IBL seaosn, 10th in Chicago. Had a great year as a backup, and helped fill the hole when Blakeway went down. He's a doubles machine (267 career) who runs very well and can play D with anyone on the left side.

The outfield

THE OUTFIELD:
Like the infield, we return the same players that broke camp last year, but with a twist. Luis Chavez, arguably the best all around player in the game, is in the final year of a horridly underpaying contract. He's made it very clear to anyone that will listen, there will be ZERO hometown discount and he'll get every penny he can from this next deal. That number appears to be starting in the mid 20's.

LF-Ernesto Martinez-R (24) Broke camp as the 4th/5th OF last year, and our only RH bat in the group. Had an outstanding season. Hit .293/.403/.415 in 70 games. Provides good speed and a RH bat for late game PH situations should they arise. Unsure of where or how he may fit moving forward, with Castro beating the door down in AAA (though Castro is LH as well).
LF/RF-Eric Coates-L (30) Got off to a sluggish start last year and showed the game can be cruel as Dennis Ash took over the everyday job and won a 2nd batting title. Coates is a career .325 hitter with a .401 OBP over 722 games. The 2016 Rookie of the Year and 2018 Batting Champion. While this team is in the best position to succeed with him as our 4th guy, he has made it known that it's not going to be a good situation this year if he isn't starting come opening day. The team holds a 10.5M dollar option next year and given how good he's been, it's likely we'll look to get him out and somewhere OUTSIDE our league where he can play everyday. He's got a lot of good years left. FWIW his .3249 lifetime average is good for 4th all time in the IBL...
OF-Dennis Ash-L (27) Coming off a 2nd consecutive FL batting title and his 1st career Gold Glove. Ash is a premier leadoff man with speed to burn (20) and a gold glove across the outfield. Stole a career high 44 bases last season and hit a career high 38 doubles.
CF-Hugh Collins-L (32) The IBL's All Decade CF. Collins , except for a brief 35 game hiatus to Edmonton, was an original Iron Pig and figures to go into the HoF as one as well. A career .298/.379/.564 hitter with 314 HR's 917 RBI's and 218 SB's, few players blend the mix of speed and power that he brings. Coming off a career year last season when he hit 50 homers for the 1st time, and drove in 147. He failed to tie Bill Alexnder's club record of 51 over the seasons final 5 games. His contract calls for 18.8M this year and 20.6M next, which is the final year of the deal he signed with Edmonton. He won the 2016 GG in center and is a 6 time all star.
RF-Luis Chavez-L (27) In the discussion as the best all around player in the game. Coming off his 5 straight 30/30+ season (was 40/40 in '19 and '20). Is a 2 x Hank Aaron Award winner and 5 time all star. In sticky discussions now, and hoping to get him to agree to a 5-6 year deal in/around 20-23M per. He's not happy about the talks at the moment so we're allowing for a little cooling off period.

Expectations

What else? Omar is 72 now and I hear there are rumblings about a possible sale. While I certainly hope it's not true, I can understand it. On that note Omar has made clear his 'wish' for an IBL World Series, and we'll pull out every stop to make it happen this year.

INJURY NEWS-Feared the worst, and while it could be worse, it's still bad. Roberto Martinez has a sore shoulder and will need a scope and look at the labrum, he'll be out at least 8 weeks. Dan Pallard will be recalled from Tulsa.
THOUGHTS-Not sure I need to offer them, but this is clearly an enormous issue. My 1 and 2 out, Martinez could be more than 2 months. I need to hope the depth in the system pays off now. The pen is going to get pushed but I need the offense to get some breathing room.

26 year old OF Hector Hernandez has signed a 1 year 4.18M dollar deal with the Providence Black Sox. CONTRACT NEWS:
Chicago extends Blakeway
27 year old Andre Blakeway has agreed to terms on a 5 year deal with a 6th year club option for 53M dollars. The deal calls for the slick fielding SS to make 6.3/7.4/8/4/9.5/10/5 with a 6th year at 10.6 as well.

REASONING-He's an anchor, offensively and defensively. At 27 he's hitting his prime, and while he's making a 9M dollar base this year, he was ok with back tracking on the base for first 3 years of the deal. Going to the market would have likely been 2x the cost to get a player of this caliber. Fans were clearly happy, interest went from 80 to 83.

CONTRACT NEWS-

He's the only Closer we've ever known, a likely HOF'er and most popular players on the team, and in the league. When he made it clear he would take less to remain, it was an easy conversation. Ernesto Cruz agreed to a 3 year 25.2M dollar extension today that will hopefully keep him in an Iron Pigs uniform for his entire IBL career. He's 27-27 with 391 Saves and a 1.96 ERA in 11 big league seasons. The all time saves leader. Fans were, as expected, very excited at the news. Wow, interest jumped from 85 to 91 with the news.

TRANSACTION NEWS:
Chicago appeases Coates, ships him to Baltimore
Eric Coates had been in the GM's office no less than 3 times in the past 2 weeks. Ever the good soldier he'd never really done anything to lose his job, other than get outplayed at the wrong time. He wants to start, it's clear with the Chavez contract, and Dennis Ash entrenched in left, that an everyday job is not happening here without an injury. He's got a 10M club option for next season that we'd already told him was not being picked up. He asked to be traded, never demanded, but asked, and was clear about wanting to be on the east coast. We managed to get Baltimore to part ways with a 20 year old Dean Kehoe, a SP prospect taken 15th overall in 2019 out of Atascadero HS in California. He's a project with a huge arm and huge upside if he ever locates the strike zone. We've recalled Andy Davis, our #4 prospect and the Ibl's #30, to be the backup vs RHP for the next few weeks until Hugh Collins returns. We've also reached out to some free agents to help plug some holes in Tulsa. Coates joins former teamate Wesley Morgan in Baltimore. Wes is on the DL for the next month but was off to a .279-12-37 start for the Colts, who are 5.5 back of Pittsburgh.

RECORD BREAKERS-Esteban Figueroa (SAC) tossed a 1-hitter and set an IBL record with 18K's in a 5-0 win over Pittsburgh. Figueroa moves to 5-2 2.51 on the season. In the past 3 starts he's thrown 29 IP and K'd 40 batters, giving up just 9 hits and 4 walks. It was his 5th career shutout, and 2nd of Pittsburgh, the team he no-hit in 2020. Fernando Montoya broke the bid up with a 7th inning leadoff single.

TRADE NEWS-New Orleans has sent 25 year old SS Cary Wallace and 20 year old 2B prospect Robinson Cano to Green Bay for 29 year old 1B Francisco Gonzalez.

REASONING-I can't even begin to undestand this one. Two very good young players, for an average older one. Their scouts aren't onto Cano just yet, but Wallace is a very good player, just 25 (our 2017 1st rounder, 9th overall).

ROSTER NEWS-With Martinez coming off the DL and his rehab a corresponding move will need to be made. Pallard has outpitched McKinley but Steve has no options remaining and I'll lose him on waivers for sure. I shopped him, and there's major interest (as expected), but I don't see a deep need right now, so I'll hold on and send Pallard back.
