United States - Bantamweights - Fight-Ins - Part 1
Fight-Ins Part 1:
Eddie Martin vs Hughey Boyle - Martin dominated despite losing a round for his 3rd low blow in the 5th. He scored knockdowns in the 5th then the 9th for the KO. George Marks vs Robert Burns - Burns started fast, taking the early lead, but Marks found his stride around the 5th. There were mostly close rounds throughout, neither man was in serious trouble and it went the distance. The scoring was interesting, 8-6 Marks, 8-7 Burns and 9-4 for the winner by split decision Marks. David Kui Kong Young vs Shorty Cleveland - Young was relentless, working the body and wearing Cleveland down then scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 8th round, the final one as time ran out for the KO. Bobby Green vs Jimmy Dunn -Green was firmly in control of this fight, though he and Dunn had an awesome 2nd round. Dunn went down in the 8th for the 10 count after a cut over the right eye from an accidental butt. Abe Goldstein vs Spider Gallagher -Goldstein took advantage of Gallagher's skill set to outland him 185 to 72 through 8 rounds before a cut over Gallagher's right eye opened to end the fight for the TKO. Tommy Forte vs Joe Gates - Forte's speed, movement and accuracy were too much for the hapless Gates to handle over 15 rounds as this one went 12-3, 14-1 and 13-2 for Forte. Harold Dade vs Elias Hamilton - Dade was content to do just enough to win rounds, moving, dancing and clowning around throughout his 13-2, 10-4 and 13-2 decision over Hamilton. He landed 37% of his punches while only allowing 8.5% of Hamilton's shots to reach him in a defensive gem. Johnny Carter vs Maxey Haugh - Carter was in complete control throughout, scoring a knockdown in the 5th round then coasting to the 11-3, 12-2 and 12-1 decision. Joe Burman vs Danny Mahoney - Burman kept the pressure on Mahoney throughout, opening a gash on the left cheek bone that widened throughout the fight until the ring doctor ordered the fight halted in the 8th round. Archie Bell vs Joe McGrath - Bell boxed the perfect match, keeping on his toes throughout and mixing his jab with crosses and combinations throughout the bout to earn the 9-5, 11-4 and 11-4 decision. |

United States - Bantamweights - Fight-Ins - Part 2
Fight-Ins - Part 2:
Harold Smith vs Benny Murphy - Murphy egged Smith on in the 1st round and went down for a 3 count. In the 2nd the two accidentally clashed heads, causing a cut on the hairline of Murphy. The cut reopened again in the 7th, cutting the bout short and sending it to the scorecards. With Smith outlanding Murphy 213-36 it was easy to see where this one was going as Smith won 5-1 on all 3 cards. Harold Petty vs Charley Parton - Petty was in control from the onset, landing a knockdown late in the 1st round then pouring it on until the referee stepped in to save him from further punishment and the 1st round TKO for Petty. Dynamite Murphy vs Max Saufeldt - Murphy dominated, scoring the KO with 1:50 left in the 2nd round of this sceduled 15 round bout. Boots Monroe vs Dick Chang - Chang came in a huge underdog and shocked everyone with a pair of knockdowns in the 1st round. It was all Monroe after that however as he controlled the pace the rest of the way, causing major swelling around both eyes of Chang and taking the decision handily 13-1, 11-3 and 13-1. Ronnie Jones vs Joey Garcia - Jones scored a knockdown in the 1st round, a harbinger of things to come. He continued to dominate then scored 2 knockdowns in the 7th before the referee stepped in for the TKO. Roger Gonzalez vs Kid Hogan - Gonzalez dominated against a game but out matched Hogan, scoring 7 knockdowns, 5 in the 13th! In the 14th he scored the 7th knockdown and the referee immediately waved it off, saving Hogan from serious harm. Manny Elias vs Freddie Jackson - Not much action in this one as both men preferred to work from outside when they chose to work at all. It went the distance with Jackson suffering minor swelling around the right eye, but other than a 4th round knockdown by Elias there was little action. The scores were odd to say the least, I had Elias winning 8-6 while the judges had it 11-3 Elias, 7-7 and 7-7 for the Majority Draw. Alberto Davila vs Adolph Samuels - Davila was relentless in his pursuit of the swift fleeing Samuels, scoring well on the inside and taking the legs from Samuels. In the 8th he pummeled him unmercifully then in the 9th scored a pair of knockdowns then piled it on until the referee wrapped his arms around Samuels to save him from further damage. Gaby Canizales vs Al Wilcher - Canizales had his way with Wilcher, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 2nd, 2 in the 8th, 2 in the 11th then the KO shot in the 12th for a total of 7 knockdowns. Tim Austin vs Sammy Bienfeld - Austin took 2 of the first three rounds as Bienfeld fought well at times, but in the 4th Austin landed a hook that put Bienfeld down on the canvas. Bienfeld struggled to one knee, but slipped back down as the count tolled 10 for the KO. Rematch: Manny Elias vs Freddie Jackson - Another uninspiring bout that saw Elias finally win in the 13th when he opened a gash on the left eyelid of Jackson for the TKO. Jackson was up 7-5 on two cards and down 6-5 on the 3rd through the 12th round. |

United States - Bantamweights - Fight-Ins - Part 3
Fight-Ins - Part 3:
Rayonta Whitfield vs Walter Cho - Cho fought well despite cuts over and under the right eye, but Whitfield was a bit more active and a lot more accurate as he earned the 9-5, 7-7 and 8-6 majority decision. Little Jackie Sharkey vs Neddy Garcia - Garcia was putting on a decent bout against the favored Sharkey, though Sharkey was getting the best of it when Garcia was disqualified after his 5th foul in 8 rounds to send Sharkey to the next round. Richie Sandoval vs Richard Goodwin - Sandoval dominated, though he was cut in the 4th round. He scored the lone knockdown in the 5th as he came out trying to end it the next several rounds. In the 7th with Goodwin nearly out on his feet, Goodwin landed 1 punch in the round. That punch reopened the gash over the right eye of Sandoval and the ring doctor ended the bout for the shocking upset TKO by Goodwin. Greg Richardson vs Indian Russell - Richardson was faster, slicker & more accurate throughout the bout against Russell to earn the 10-4, 11-4 and 10-5 decision. Frankie Neil vs Troy Fletcher - Neither man was down, neither man marked in any way as they both looked as if they'd not been in a bout after 15 rounds. Neil was the better boxer however as he outlanded Fletcher by nearly 2-1 to earn the 10-4, 8-6 and 8-6 decision. Oscar Muniz vs Charley Kelly - Kelly put on a decent show scoring a 4th round knockdown but Muniz was the stronger by far, scoring a knockdown in the 7th, then another in the 8th for the KO. Howard Mayberry vs Jack Kid Madden - Mayberry scored the lone knockdown in the 3rd round and was in firm control of this bout when a cut he suffered in the 4th round reopened in the 9th round for the Madden upset by TKO on cuts. Herman Marques vs Midget Smith - Marques dominated Smith with the exception of one round, opening a cut in the 4th then reopening it in the 6th for the TKO on cuts. Tommy Feltz vs Joe Sturch - A tough defensive battle that saw the fight going Sturch's way in the first half. Feltz battled back however, finally getting to Sturch regularly, opening a cut over the left eye and nearly closing the right before time ran out in the 15th. The scoring was mixed, with the judges seeing it 8-5 Sturch, 8-5 Feltz and 8-5 for the winner by split decision Feltz. Connie Curry vs Eddie Cook - Curry was the heavy favorite, but Cook took control early, causing major swelling around both eyes and opening a cut over the right eye. The swelling was the major factor as Curry could no longer see punches coming, going down 6 times before the final one in the 11th was for the 10 count and a big upset by the powerful Cook. |

United States - Bantamweights - Fight-Ins - Part 4
Fight-Ins - Part 4:
Henry Catena vs Frankie Jerome - Catena was in control throughout the bout, but Jerome kept coming back to keep things close as Catena took the tougher than expected 8-6, 9-5 and 9-6 decision. Amos Carlin vs Billy Peacock - A surprisingly good action bout saw Carlin forge a solid lead despite a cut over the left eye only to have the cut burst open again in the 8th for the come from behind TKO on cuts for Peacock. Happy Atherton vs Johnny Reagan - A dominant performance by Atherton despite some good countering at times by Reagan. Atherton kept coming forward cutting off the ring well then scoring inside. Atherton scored the lone knockdown in the 14th enroute to the comprehensive 15-0, 13-1 and 11-0 decision. Clarence Vinson vs Jose Miguel Aguiniga - A good amount of punches thrown, but neither was particularly accurate which made for a lot of very close rounds as this one ended up a 7-7 draw on all 3 cards. Rematch at the end of the round. Ad Rubidoux vs Joseph Biderberg - A back and forth affair marred by dirty fighting by Biderberg who kept holding and hitting throughout the bout. His 4th foul in the 6th round handed Rubidoux the victory by disqualification. Johnny Murphy vs Nate Brooks - A close bout that while tactical had some good action at times. It went back and forth with Murphy finishing strong enough to win 8-7 on my card while the judges scoring it 8-7 Brooks, 8-7 Murphy and 8-7 for the winner by split decision Brooks. Tony Marino vs Frankie Duarte - Marino was slick, moving well and landing at a solid rate while Duarte was taking 2 shots to land one bomb, rocking Marino throughout the bout. This made for a thrilling contrast in styles that was close to the final round with the judges scoring it 8-4, 5-6 and 8-4 for the winner by split decision Marino. Willie LaMorte vs Harry Forbes - Perhaps one of the most boring fights of the tournament thus far, neither man seemed willing to mix it up. Forbes had more big rounds while LaMorte seemed to get the edge in the close ones. That made for a tough job for the judges, who scored it 8-6 Forbes, 7-6 for LaMorte and 7-6 for the winner by split decision, LaMorte. Dixie LaHood vs Pete Frissina - LaHood spent most of the night back peddling to avoid the oncoming Frissina. Frissina landed more often and with bad intent then finally scored a knockdown at the end of the 15th round before the fight went to the judges who scored it wildly different, 11-2 Frissina, 7-5 LaHood and 7-6 for the winner by split decision Frissina. Tommy Kelly vs Henry Gault - After 2 feeling out rounds Gault timed Kelly coming in with a perfect combination that had Kelly down for the count 54 seconds into the 3rd round. Rematch: Clarence Vinson vs Jose Miguel Aguiniga - Another close bout that saw Vinson down in the 6th round. He took the lead in the later rounds but Aguiniga had his most dominant round in the 15th as he earned the 6-9, 9-5 and 8-7 split decision. |

United States - Bantamweights - Round 1 - Part 1
Round 1 - Part 1:
Jimmy Barry vs Richard Goodwin - Barry used a combination of clever defense, pinpoint offense & power to build up an insurmountable lead, causing major swelling around the right orb & opening a cut over the right eye as well. knockdowns in the 11th and 12th followed by a savage attack to finish the job gave Barry the TKO later in the 12th. Pete Herman vs Jack Kid Madden - Herman had a field day against the slower Madden, landing 519 shots to only 179 for Madden while causing serious swelling around both eyes and opening a cut over the right eye in the 15th. The fight went the distance, but the reading of the score cards was a mere formality. The judges scored it 10-5, 14-1 and 11-4 & most people were wondering about the 1st and 3rd judges. Jeff Chandler vs Eddie Cook - A brutal bout that saw Cook both men swelling and bleeding throughout. Chandler built up a huge lead, then scored a pair of knockdowns late to secure the 10-4, 11-4 and 10-4 decision. Afterwards Chandler said "I've never had anyone hit me as hard as Cook." Rosey Stoy vs Billy Peacock - Stoy moved beautifully from side to side, keeping Peacock off balance and using a devastating ouside attack to open a gash over the right eye of Peacock that reopened in the 11th for the TKO on cuts. Charley Phil Rosenberg vs Jose Miguel Aguiniga - Rosenberg fought a smart fight, sticking and moving throughout as Aquiniga was unable to keep close enough to do much damage. This translated into an 11-2, 8-5 and 8-4 decision for Rosenberg. Manuel Ortiz vs Nate Brooks - This was closer than expected as Brooks fought well against the heavily favored Ortiz. Ortiz scored the lone knockdown of the bout in the 13th round & closed strong to earn the 9-5, 8-6 and 9-5 decision. Memphis Pal Moore vs Pete Frissina - Moore was fantastic in this one, scoring 4 knockdowns enroute to his 14th round KO of Frissina. He landed 459 shots to only 196 for Frissina. The scorecards through 13 were mixed, with 2 at 10-2 and another at 6-6. Though one would ask what fight the 3rd judge was watching. Terry McGovern vs Henry Gault - A short brutal affair that saw McGovern cut above both eyes and Gault cut over the right eye. McGovern had his eye looked at in the 7th, then came out with a sense of urgency, pounding on Gault in an attempt to end the bout before the doctor could. He had Gault trapped against the ropes unable to fall when the referee stepped in to stop the carnage for the 7th round TKO. |

United States - Bantamweights - Round 1 - Part 2
Round 1 - Part 2:
Harry Harris vs Wille LaMorte - LaMorte built a solid lead early, then tried to hold on as Harris finished strongly to earn the 8-6, 7-7 and 8-5 majority decision. Harris swept the final 3 rounds on my card to win 8-7, so no suprise with the decision. Al Delmont vs Tony Marino - Delmont scored a knockdown in the 2nd round only to have Marino storm back and take the next 5 rounds. Marino went down again in the 7th, then Delmont took control closing the gap a bit. Marino came back again, and going into the 15th I had the underdog Marino up 7-6. Delmont scored an early knockdown in the 15th, then stormed in and punished Marino until the referee halted the bout with 9 seconds left for the TKO for Delmont. Delmont was up 8-4, 7-6 and 6-7 through the 14th round. Johnny Coulon vs Ad Rubidoux - There were several good close action rounds, but Coulon built up an insurmountable lead before a cut from an accidental butt in the 7th round reopened in the 14th to send it to the judges early. They scored it 7-5, 9-3 and 10-2 for the winner by technical unanimous decision Coulon. Frankie Burns vs Happy Atherton - Atherton tried to be the agressor, but Burns movement was too quick & graceful. Unfortunately Burns didn't show much interest in offense for most of the bout, which made for some close low scoring rounds. It went the distance with neither man down, cut or swelling & the judges scored it 8-7, 9-6 and 9-6 for Burns. Paulie Ayala vs Henry Catena - A tactical bout that saw Ayala land nearly twice as many shots while moving fluidly. The scoring after 15 rounds was odd, as the judges had it 9-5, 6-6 (??) and 9-4 for Ayala. Kid Williams vs Tommy Feltz - Williams was in control from the opening bell, moving well & nailing Williams on a 3 for 1 basis throughout the bout to earn the 10-4, 10-4 and 11-3 decision. Bud Taylor vs Herman Marques - Two boxers not afraid to mix it up saw many close rounds with each man thinking they had won the bout at the end of 15. I had it 8-7 Taylor on the strength of a strong final round and the judges scored it 8-6 Taylor, 8-7 Marques & 9-6 for the winner by split decision Taylor. Lou Salica vs Oscar Muniz - A decent bout between two technicians, I had Salica holding off Muniz 8-6 due to a bit better offense and better defense overall. The judges saw it differently, scoring it 8-6 Salica, 8-6 Muniz and 7-6 for the upset winner Muniz. The crowd was displeased with this result as evidenced by the loud jeering as the decision was announced. |

United States - Bantamweights - Round 1 - Part 3
Round 1 - Part 3:
Joe Lynch vs Frankie Neil - Neil started fast as Neil was unable to close the gap. He gradually found his distance, making for a close competitive fight as when he did close Lynch countered well. Neither man was down, though both were rocked at times and Lynch had a split lip and a swollen right eye at the end of 15. The judges scored it 7-6 Lynch, 6-6 even and 6-5 for Neil, so we'll get to enjoy these two again. Bushy Graham vs Greg Richardson - Good defensive battle with a bit of offense only due to the high volume of punches thrown by both men throughout the bout. It was a close one with Graham outlanding Richardson by only 14 shots for the entire bout. Neither man down, Graham had a cut over the left eye as it went to the judges. They scored it 8-6 Richardson, 7-6 Graham and 8-5 for the split decision winner, Graham. Orlando Canizales vs Little Jackie Sharkey - The favored Canizales was cruising along, scoring a knockdown in the 7th round and thoroughly dominating Sharkey when both men came out for the KO in the 10th round. Sharkey was in complete control, getting off faster then landing a powerful combination that put Canizales down for the count with 8 seconds left in the round for the upset. Eddie Campi vs Raytona Whitfield - A close back and forth bout that had Campi close strong to earn the 8-7, 9-5 and 9-6 decision. Jimmy Walsh vs Tim Austin - A terrific back and forth action bout that saw Walsh down in the 8th and Austin down in the 13th. Austin came back strong, taking the final two rounds to win the 8-7, 9-4 and 9-6 upset decision. Alberto Sandoval vs Gaby Canizales - Sandoval built up a huge lead, scoring 5 knockdowns before the referee finally had seen enough in the 13th for the TKO. Sandoval outlanded Canizales 342 to 228 in the bout. Tony Olivera vs Alberto Davila - A back and forth affair that had Davila take control in the 9th, scoring the KO in the 11th for the mild upset. Davila had major swelling around both eyes while Olivera was carrying his arms dangerously low at the time of the stop. Raul Martinez vs Manny Elias - A tight bout with little action, Elias held on to win the 8-7, 7-7 and 7-6 majority decision over the favored Martinez. Rematch: Joe Lynch vs Frankie Neil - Lynch started much faster with a dominant first round only to have Lynch take control from there, winning the 2nd round with a wicked last 30 seconds of the round, landing combo's seemingly at will. In the 3rd Lynch started fast, but Neil traded well and the fans were on their feet when out of the blue Neil landed a sizzling combo that put the favored Lynch down for the count! |

United States - Bantamweights - Round 1 - Part 4
Round 1 - Part 4:
Eddie Martin vs Roger Gonzalez - Gonzalez dominated the first 6 rounds scoring 4th & 5th round knockdowns. The 7th was a different story as they both traded bombs at a furious pace (23-18) in what could be the round of the year. Gonzalez was back in control with a huge 8th round only to have Gonzalez come back in the 9th. The 10th was all Gonzalez as he scored the 3rd knockdown of the fight, followed by the 11th when he scored 3 more knockdowns, the final one for the count with 11 seconds left. George Marks vs Ronnie Jones - A back and forth bout mainly due to Marks constant movement to avoid the stronger Jones. Marks out landed Jones 319 to 225, but Jones landed the harder shots and was the consistent aggressor throughout. The judging was close with the scores being 8-7 Marks, 8-7 Jones and 8-7 for the winner by split decision Jones. David Kui Kong Young vs Boots Monroe - A good bout that saw Young press Monroe and force him to fight throughout. The fans spent most of the night on their feet cheering the excellent action until the 12th when Young landed a huge uppercut that put the tough Monroe down for the count as the clock ran out for the round. Bobby Green vs Dynamite Murphy - This fight was intense as Green used movement to try and keep Murphy off him. They traded rounds for the first 12 rounds, but Murphy closed strong the final 3 rounds, scoring the lone knockdown of the bout in the final frame as he earned the 9-3, 4-7 and 7-5 split decision. Abe Goldstein vs Harold Petty - After a fiery first 3 rounds Goldstein took control of this bout between two stylists, and frustrated Petty to the point that he kept fouling. After his 5th foul came in the 6th round the referee had seen enough and disqualified Petty for blatantly hitting on the break to send Goldstein on to the next round. Tommy Forte vs Harold Smith - Forte took what looked to be a commanding lead with slick boxing and stellar defense. Smith came on strong to close things up, leaving things up to the fickle fate known as judging after 15 rounds. It was 9-6 Forte, 9-6 Smith and 8-7 for the winner by split decision Forte. Harold Dade vs Archie Bell - These two light hitting stylists forgot they were boxers as they went after one another with an unexpected fury. It went back and forth early with many very close rounds and despite a cut over the left eye of Dade that opened in the 14th, it went the distance with the judges scoring it 7-6 Dade, 8-5 Bell and 8-5 for the split decision by Dade. Johnny Carter vs Joe Burman - A tough bout to call that went back and forth despite a 2nd round cut over the eye of Carter. Carter scored the lone knockdown in the 14th round but this one was simply too close to pick a winner and it showed in the scoring which was 7-6 Carter, 7-7 even and 8-7 for Burman. Rematch: Johnny Carter vs Joe Burman - This one started out the same as the first fight, too close to call until Burman went down again, this time in the 7th round. Burman never seemed to recover, spending most of the remainder of the bout on his bicycle rather than fighting which allowed Carter to dictate the pace and win the 12-3, 9-6 and 12-3 decision. |

United States - Bantamweights - Round 2 - Part 1
Round 2 - Part 1:
Jimmy Barry vs Oscar Muniz - Barry was very fluid in his movement, landing crisp combos and lightning quick jabs to keep Muniz off balance for the bulk of the fight. Barry showed some power as well, scoring 3 knockdowns to route Muniz 12-3 on all 3 cards. Pete Herman vs Frankie Neil - Neither man showed an inclination to actually fight in this one, constantly moving and feinting but throwing few punches. This made a difficult fight to score, as evidenced by the 8-6 Herman, 7-7 even and 7-7 even scores for the majority draw. Unfortunately we have to do this one again. Jeff Chandler vs Little Jackie Sharkey - Chandler asserted himself early, scoring a 2nd round knockdown, but Sharkey held his ground, then scored a knockdown of his own in the 9th round. That seemed to serve as a wake up call for Chandler as he took control from that point forward to earn the 8-7, 8-7 and 8-6 decision. Rosey Stoy vs Tim Austin - A brilliant and thrilling performance by both men, Austin rocked Stoy throughout as Stoy countered ferociously but with less effect for most of the bout. It was Stoy that shocked with the lone knockdown of the fight in the 13th round then closed strong to earn the 5-8, 8-7 and 8-7 decision. Stoy needed to win the final 3 rounds big to pull this one out, and he delivered! Charley Phil Rosenberg vs Alberto Davila - Davila was the agressor throughout, but Rosenberg responded well which made for a thrilling bout that had many highs and lows for both fighters. Both men sported ballooning right eyes by the midway point though neither man was down. I had it 7-7 even while the judges had it 9-5 Rosenberg, 9-5 Davila and 7-7 even for the draw. The fans are looking forward to this rematch as am I! Manuel Ortiz vs Manny Elias - Elias couldn't handle the controlled fury and aggression of Ortiz as Ortiz landed 432 shots in only 11 rounds of action compared to 143 by Elias. Elias went down in the 10th and Ortiz came out looking to end it in the 11th and did by way of TKO when the referee finally stepped in to save the hapless Elias. Ortiz was up 9-1 on two cards and 8-1 on the third through the 10th round. Memphis Pal Moore vs Roger Gonzalez - Terrific action in this one as both men elected to slug rather than box. Moore went down in the 6th, Gonzalez in the 8th. Gonzalez then went down again in the 13th while scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 15th round. I got the sense that Gonzalez had done enough to pull off the upset & the judges agreed, scoring it 8-6, 8-6 and 10-5 for Gonzalez who moves to the 3rd round. That gives Gonzalez an amazing 16 knockdowns in his 3 fights so far, with this being the first to go the distance. Terry McGovern vs Ronnie Jones - With two of the bigger punches in the division, no-one expected this one to go the distance. Every time Jones had a big round, McGovern would have a bigger one, rising to the occasion. Finally in the 6th McGovern scored the first knockdown of the bout, then two more in the 7th, the last one at the end of the round for the KO. Rematches: Pete Herman vs Frankie Neil - Herman fought much better this time both offensively and defensively as he dominated the later rounds as Neil ran out of gas by the 11th round. Neither man was down, but there was no doubt of the outcome as seen in the 8-5, 9-5 and 9-6 scores for Herman. Charley Phil Rosenberg vs Alberto Davila - Davila wasn't able to create the same sense of urgency in this one, while Rosenberg moved better and countered better to take the 9-5, 5-10 and 8-7 split decision with a dominant final round. |

He's done well so far with two big KO's. He goes against Kid Williams next if I'm not mistaken. Enjoy!

United States - Bantamweights - Round 2 - Part 2
Round 2 - Part 2:
Harry Harris vs Dynamite Murphy - This started out as a close competitive bout but Murphy went down in the 9th round and never fully recovered, allowing Harris to dictate the pace and dominate the final 6 rounds to earn the closer than expected 8-6, 8-5 and 7-6 decision. Al Delmont vs Johnny Carter - This one started with Carter moving well, controlling the pace as Delmont struggled to close the distance. In the 9th round Delmont finally landed the big shot, dropping Carter early in the round only to have Carter recover surprisingly fast then take control by the end of the round (18-18 though Delmont won the round due to the KD). By the end of the round both men were carrying their arms dangerously low from the brutality of the round. Carter seemed in control in the 10th only to have Delmont come back in spades in the 11th. The 12th saw fists flying in another brutal round then Carter scored a pair of knockdowns in the 13th round. Delmont closed strong in the final two rounds but I had Carter winning 8-7 while the judges had it 10-4 Delmont (??) 7-7 even and 7-7 even for the majority draw. This crowd pleaser will be done again at the end of the thread. Johnny Coulon vs Harold Dade - Coulon scored a knockdown in the 1st round, but Dade came back strong in the 2nd, then they went back and forth for the next several rather uneventful rounds. I had it dead even through 12. Coulon controlled the final 3 rounds to earn the 9-5, 9-6 and 9-6 decision. Frankie Burns vs Tommy Forte - After a barn burner of a first round Burns took control over the next several rounds. An overhand right by Forte in the 8th deposited Burns on his backside however. They traded fairly evenly for the next few rounds then Forte was in the middle of a huge round when Burns scored a knockdown of his own in the 12th. With scoring being close to this point it was either mans fight to win in the final 3 rounds. After a good 13th round, the final two rounds were anti-climatic as both men were exhausted. I had it 7-7 even through 15 while the judges scored it 8-6 Burns, 7-7 even and 8-7 for Forte for the draw. Paulie Ayala vs Abe Goldstein - There was a whole lot of hugging going on in the first 10 rounds as any time one fighter got too close, the other would clinch. They finally got to fighting in the final 5 rounds with Goldstein pulling out the 8-7 win with a big last 2 rounds on my card. The judges had it understandably close, 7-7, 8-6 Ayala and 8-7 for Goldstein for the draw. Kid Williams vs David Kui Kong Young - With celebrities like PWillisTheMan in attendance, there was electricity in the air. Young came out firing in the 1st round before Williams caught him late with a hook that sent him down for the count of 8. Young recovered nicely, doing great body work the next 4 rounds to forge a lead. But Williams continued with his game plan of sticking and moving, having a solid 6th. Both men teed off in the 7th in a highly competitive round. Williams opened strong in the 8th before Young lowered the boom with a thundering right for a 7 count knockdown. Young seemed firmly in control at this point. Williams landed a low blow and was penalized in the 10th, then scored his 2nd knockdown later in the round. There wasn't a lot of action the rest of the way, but one sensed that Young had pulled off the upset as it went to the judges. They had it 8-6 Young, 7-6 for Williams and 8-5 for the winner by split decision, Williams. The crowd was incensed at this decision as Young landed many more hard shots & controlled the pace throughout. PWillisTheMan left shaking his head in disgust at this turn of events. Bud Taylor vs Alberto Sandoval - Taylor built up the early lead, but Sandovals body work throughout softened Taylor as by the 10th he'd dropped his hands and lost his footspeed. Sandoval controlled the final few rounds to close the gap, and I had it 7-7 through 15. The scoring was close, but it was a unanimous decision, 8-7, 8-5 and 9-5 for Sandoval. Bushy Graham vs Eddie Campi - A very tight tactical bout between two stylists saw Campi put in a workman like effort against the flashier Graham. Neither man seemed to get the upper hand, making for some very close scoring, and it showed on the judges scorecards as they had it 8-7 Campi, 8-7 Graham and 8-7 for the winner by split decision Campi. Rematches: Al Delmont vs Johnny Carter - What a difference a fight under the belt against an opponent can make. Delmont controlled this one from the start, having learned Carter's movement from the first thrilling bout and controlled the pace from the opening bell, scoring a knockdown in the 10th. Carter couldn't seem to find the magic from the first bout and was by and large ineffective to this point. Carter had a big 11th, but then walked into a Delmont uppercut in the 12th for the 2nd knockdown of the bout. These warriors split two big rounds in the 13th and 14th, but Delmont closed strong with another knockdown in the 15th to earn the 11-4, 10-5 and 10-5 decision. Frankie Burns vs Tommy Forte - These two took up where they left off, with a fast paced first 3 close rounds. Forte had a huge 4th, causing major swelling around the right eye of Burns and scoring seemingly at will. The swelling continued to get worse, causing Burns problems as Forte forged a solid lead. Burns fought valiantly, but Forte continued to build the lead, having a huge 10th round followed by a knockdown in the 11th. It was pretty much all Forte from then on as it went the distance with the judges scoring it 10-4, 12-3 and 12-3 for the upset by Forte. Paulie Ayala vs Abe Goldstein - Another close bout due to lack of activity through most of the fight, I had Ayala doing enough to pull out the win while the judges had it 8-7, 9-6 and 11-4 for Ayala. |

That's the end of round 2. Kui Kong didn't make it to the 3rd round, much to the dismay of PWillisTheMan, but there are still many interesting possibilities in this tourney.

United States - Bantamweights - Round 3
Round 3:
Jimmy Barry vs Roger Gonzalez - Barry took a competitive 1st round, then was shocked when Gonzalez landed an overhand right that put him down for the 8 count. He survived the round and fought well the next two rounds, but Gonzalez tagged him with several hard shots in a dominant 6th and 7th rounds, opening a cut on the inside of the brow of Barry's left eye in the 7th. Barry dominated the 8th, the 9th was a pickem slugfest with Barry again controlling the 10th. Through the 12th I had it dead even 6-6 when in the 13th the cut on Barry's brow burst open in a shower of blood, sending him to the ring doctor who nixed the fight for the biggest upset of the tourney so far. Gonzalez and Forte are the only two remaining fight-in candidates left in the tourney thus far. With Barry's loss, this tourney is now wide open! Pete Herman vs Tommy Forte - Herman put on a masterful clinic on the art of defense in this one while landing jabs and combos throughout to earn the easy 12-3, 9-6 and 11-4 decision. That leaves Gonzalez as the lone entrant from the fight-in rounds left. Jeff Chandler vs Alberto Sandoval - This was a back and forth bout with Sandoval landing the harder shots but Chandler landing the greater volume. This made for tough scoring and I had it dead even through 10 rounds when Sandoval shocked Chandler with an uppercut that put him down for a 9 count. Chandler got on his bike and survived the round. Chandler and Sandoval split the next few rounds setting up a dead even fight through 14. Neither man had anything left in the tank for the 15th, and action slowed to a near standstill as it went to the judges for the tallies. They scored it 8-7 Chandler, 8-7 Sandoval and 8-7 for the upset victor Sandoval, as the 2nd top seed falls in this tourney. Rosey Stoy vs Eddie Campi - Both men spent most of the fight on the outside. When Campi decided to close, he dominated, but it wasn't the tone of the fight as most rounds were low scoring affairs that were difficult to score. Neither man scored a knockdown, neither was cut or bruised as it went the distance. The judges had it wildly different, 9-6 Campi, 11-4 Stoy and 10-5 for the surprise winner Campi. Charley Phil Rosenberg vs Kid Williams - A lot of close rounds in this tactical bout, but Williams seemed bit quicker, was more accurate and busier to earn the 10-4, 6-6 and 9-5 majority decision. Manuel Ortiz vs Paulie Ayala - Ayala seemed to be the front runner in this one, pulling ahead only to have Ortiz storm back each time. This pattern continued to the 14th round where I had it dead even. Ayala had one more solid round under his belt however, dominating the final round. The judging was expected to be close and it was, 8-6, 7-7 and 9-5 for the winner by majority decision Ayala. Terry McGovern vs Johnny Coulon - A classic slugger vs stylist match-up saw Coulon pull ahead while McGovern patiently stalked, gradually closing in. After several very tight rounds that seemed to go Coulon's way McGovern landed a huge uppercut for an 8 count in the 7th and nearly finished the job before the bell rang. Coulon fought back, dominating the 8th only to go down to another uppercut in the 9th. The 10th and 11th were uneventful, but McGovern landed a series of hard shots in the 12th that had Coulon in a bad way. He seemed to be defending himself none the less when the judge stepped in to halt the bout. Many felt it was a quick hook, but there was no doubt Coulon was hurt. Harry Harris vs Al Delmont - This was expected to be a tactical match, but both fighters came out winging and it had several momentum changes as Delmont took the early lead only to have Harris storm back to even things up. Delmont then took control again, building up another lead, then Harris came back again, seemingly putting the fight out of reach as Harris came out looking for the desperation KO in the 15th. Delmont weathered the storm to earn a hard fought 5-9, 8-6 and 10-5 split decision. |

United States - Bantamweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Pete Herman vs Roger Gonzalez - Herman started fast, dominating the first 2 rounds, but Gonzalez took the next two, then scored the fight's first knockdown in the 5th. The fight was savage, with back and forth action and both men had distended swelling around both eyes by the 10th round. Herman seemed to get the better of it in the later rounds, but with so many close action packed rounds it was anyone's fight after 15. The judges had it 8-6 on all 3 cards for the winner Herman, ending the Cinderella run of Gonzalez, who left the ring to the adoring cheers of the entire crowd. Terry McGovern vs Alberto Sandoval - McGovern accidentally clashed heads with Sandoval in the 1st round and the fight was ended in the 5th round when the cut on Sandoval's left eyelid reopened. All 4 rounds were close and competitive, and the results in doubt when it went to the judges. They scored it 2-2 on all 3 cards for the draw. Rematch coming up! Al Delmont vs Eddie Campi - A defensive battle for the first 10 rounds, both men took turns smothering the other by round which made for a close tactical bout. Delmont landed a crisp combo in the 11th for the first knockdown of the bout to seemingly take control the rest of the way and earn the win. The judges saw it differently, 8-6 Delmont, and 7-7 even on the other two cards for the majority draw. So we have our 2nd straight rematch coming up. Paulie Ayala vs Kid Williams - A workman like yet unspectacular tactical bout saw these two trade rounds throughout, with it 7-7 on my card in the 15th. Williams seemed to get the better of it in the final round, but the judges were more impressed with Ayala overall scoring it 9-6, 5-9 and 8-7 for Ayala. Rematches: Terry McGovern vs Alberto Sandoval - McGovern was in firm control through the first 6 rounds, taking 5 out of 6 rounds on my card when Sandoval landed a huge right cross that put McGovern on the canvas. He survived the round then was pulling ahead in the next round when Sandoval landed an uppercut for the first of two knockdowns in the 8th. McGovern took control again the next round, then scored a pair of knockdowns of his own on straight right hands in the 12th round the final one icing Sandoval and propelling McGovern to the Semi's. The cards were split, 6-5 Sandoval, 5-5 even and 7-4 McGovern through the 11th round. Al Delmont vs Eddie Campi - Campi was pulling ahead in what was a slog of a bout, with neither man being particularly impressive when in the 6th round Delmont opened a cut over Campi's right eye. That seemed to embolden Delmont who took the next several rounds, then he reopened the gash in the 11th for the TKO. |

No worries, Chandler is my favorite Bantam. That was more painful.

United States - Bantamweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Pete Herman vs Paulie Ayala - There were a couple of good competitive rounds, but for the most part both men preferred to stay away from one another which made for a dull low scoring affair. It went the distance with neither man landing a telling blow. The judges scored it 7-6 Ayala, 9-4 Herman and 7-5 for the split decision winner Ayala as he deposes the #2 seeded Herman. Terry McGovern vs Al Delmont - McGovern was like a bull in a china shop, charging forward and smothering Delmont with punches at every turn, scoring a knockdown in the 7th. Delmont seemed nearly out on his feet in the 12th when he landed a shocking knockdown of his own with a perfect combo in a round of the year candidate. McGovern continued dominating after that, scoring knockdowns in the 14th and 15th to win the 11-3 decision on all 3 cards. Final: Terry McGovern vs Paulie Ayala - A fast and furious bout with McGovern doing a great job of closing the gap and scoring only to have Ayala counter furiously then slide away. Ayala built up a lead but in the 7th it was all McGovern as he hurt Ayala early and often until a perfect uppercut put Ayala on his back for the 10 count and sent McGovern to the World Tournament with a stellar 6-0-1 (5) record. |
