McGraw signs with Ringers; Sutter stays in Milwaukee

Fans were ecstatic as the Ringers broke word that they had reached an agreement with John McGraw, the phenomenal young second baseman today.

The deal, valued at $6,140,000 per year, will last 4 years and give the team some extra speed.

Looking at his all-time stats, McGraw has a lifetime .255 average with 1197 hits, 162 doubles, 35 triples, 77 home runs and 428 RBIs. To date he has scored 732 runs, walked 804 times and stolen 225 bases.

An original member of the PBL, McGraw will turn 28 shortly after Opening Day, having started playing at the age of 19.
Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bangers have decided to keep Bruce Sutter despite his struggles after coming over from New Orleans last season, signing the free agent to a 3-year deal with $1.18 million a season.

Sutter went 3-5 with 2 saves and a 4.04 ERA in 23 appearances after coming over from New Orleans last season. Yet the Bangers believe Sutter can be their closer, as he was several years ago when he debuted with the Knights and racked up 28 saves in an All-Star rookie campaign.

First exhibition week sees injuries take toll

With a week of exhibition games gone, the biggest story is really the only one that ever matters during the spring...injuries.

The story starts with Number One pick Mickey Mantle, who singled in his first at bat - albeit a spring one - in an Oklahoma City uniform. But Mantle was pulled from the game with an oblique strain. He hasn't played since, and is not yet swinging a bat. The Stingers have made it clear they will be very cautious with their prized jewel.

Meanwhile, Sacramento's Mark Mulder will be undergoing elbow ligament surgery that will keep him out through the 2018 season. There are some who contend Mulder's shift from career starter to closer for three years and back to starter last season may have contributed to the injury.

The Stingers took another hit today when Dave Stewart was declared out indefinitely for nerve decompression surgery. He could be out until the All-Star Break.

The New York Heroes lost first baseman Fred Tenney, who went down in a heap rounding first base and has been diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain that should keep him out past Opening Day.

Idols extend Richardson

As has been rumored, the Los Angeles Idols have finished a deal with All Star-caliber second baseman Hardy Richardson that will extend his stay in Los Angeles at least 2 years and will pay out $8,800,000.

Over his career Richardson has batted .262 and collected 1192 hits, 152 home runs and 702 RBIs.

Racers' Oswalt done for season

Five months after a great story, the tale has changed for Roy Oswalt.

The Louisville icon has been diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament that will require surgery, ending his 2018 campaign.

The heartbreaking news comes after Oswalt's remarkable complete game shutout performance in Game 3 of Louisville's four-game sweep of Arizona in the PBL Championship Series.

Watching Oswalt, an original member of the Racers who was one of the league's top pitchers the first several years of the league but had become relegated to the bullpen in recent years, mobbed by teammates on the Louisville mound before a crowd that idolizes him was one of the great scenes in PBL history.

Now, Oswalt will miss a season and have a long rehabilitation ahead of him.

"I'm going to get it done and be back, simple as that," Oswalt said. "Trust me, I'm not done."

His teammates seemed to take the news harder than Oswalt himself.

"The guy is a warrior," said Richie Ashburn. "He's been at the peak, he's been down, and everywhere in between. And then look at him in October. That was incredible. I hope we get to see that again."

The Louisville fans agree. With Mickey Harris having left for Orlando, and Gene Richards gone to Vegas, the defending champs should look much different.

Charleston signs extension with Los Angeles

He was set to become the biggest free agent on next offseason's market. But instead, Oscar Charleston decided he likes where he's at.

"We won two years ago, we'll contend every year and the fans and teammates are great," Charleston said at the announcement of the signing. "There's no reason for me to look elsewhere."

The lifetime .333 hitter ranks in the top 10 in virtually every offensive category in PBL history, and will make a little more than $8 million a year over the next three seasons following this year's $6.285 million haul.

Coming of an off season (.271-13-73, 102 runs, 30 SB), Charleston could waited for a bounce-back season and reaped more on the open market. That he didn't speaks volumes about the Idols organization.

PBL Kicks Off 10th Season
April 2, 2018

The Pastime Baseball League began its 10th season today with the promise of a new day for all involved, and heightened anticipation around what's perceived as the best draft class in PBL history.

A few members of that class started with a bang. Eddie Mathews homered for Memphis in their 6-0 win over Las Vegas. But it was Ernie Banks who stole the Opening Day show, going 4-for-4 with his first career homer for Orlando, which fell to Oklahoma City 5-4. The Scorpions were without their No. 1 draft pick, Mickey Mantle, who continues to nurse an oblique strain. He's expected back next week.

Banks' day put a silver lining on the cloud of prized free agent pickup Mickey Harris' poor debut for Orlando. Harris, who won 21 games in earning Northern League Outstanding Pitcher honors and leading Louisville to the title last season, allowed four runs over 7 1/3 in his first start since inking a 3-year, $31.75 million contract to become the PBL's first $10 million player.

Arizona's Sam Thompson, still angry over missing last postseason with a broken hand, returned in his usual form, going deep in the Sandmen's 2-1 loss at Alabama, where reigning Southern League Outstanding Pitcher Dan Haren outdueled Mike LaCoss.

Defending champion Louisville opened up with a 6-5 win over Milwaukee, despite Bangers homers from Al Rosen and free agent signee Pedro Guerrero.

Bob Veale and his 73 wins over the last four seasons didn't impress New York, which battered him for 7 runs over three innings to support John Lackey, hoping to rebound from a 17-loss season in his first with the Heroes.

The Chicago Hitmen opened with a formula victory - great pitching from Ben Sanders and a homer from Babe Ruth - to beat Boston 4-1.

Charleston Runs to Milestone
Idols' star first in PBL history to 1,000 runs

It was a run-of-the-mill play. Dan Brouthers grounded into a force, scoring Oscar Charleston from third to score the Los Angeles Idols' first run in what would become a 6-1 win over Memphis.

Then the scoreboard flashed in Memphis.

"The Memphis Strummers Congratulate Oscar Charleston on Reaching 1,000 Runs."

Such an act probably wouldn't have happened in any other stadium in the Pastime Baseball League. But here in Memphis, where Charleston spent the first 7 1/2 seasons of his career, it was a simple matter of respect.

Charleston became the first player in PBL history to cross the 1,000 run plateau, and he is looking like the player - albeit in the very early going - who terrorized opposing pitchers for most of his Memphis tenure.

"That was very nice of them," Charleston said afterward. "You don't expect an opposing team to give you an ovation for scoring against them. But I enjoyed my time here in Memphis, and appreciate the fans greatly."

In Charleston's first six seasons in Memphis, he topped 100 runs and drove in more than 100 each season except his injury shortened 2014 campaign. His averages: .361, .397, .338, .369, .336, .342.

After hitting .415 this spring, Charleston - who's still only 30 - hopes for a return back to that form.

Two to 200
Davis, Hines Reach 200 homer mark

One won, one lost, but both joined some fairly lofty company.

Las Vegas' Harry Davis and Charlotte's Paul Hines each struck the 200th homers of their respective careers today, becoming the 14th and 15th players in PBL history to do so.

Davis hit a 2-run homer off Pete Vukovich in the 8th inning of the Bosses' 5-3 loss to Oklahoma City. It was his second homer of the season.

Hines homered twice off of Chris Capuano, accounting for all of Charlotte's runs in a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Bangers. Hines, coming off a career high 37 homers and 115 RBI last season, now has three homers in the opening week of the 2018 campaign.

Racers' Mumphrey Heads to DL

The Racers Jerry Mumphrey was injured making a defensive play during today's game against the Philadelphia Ringers. The team doctor expects the right fielder to miss 4-6 weeks with an intercostal strain. No roster changes were announced by team officials.

Presently Mumphrey is hitting .450 with no home runs and 6 RBIs. He has played in 7 games and scored 8 times.

Louisville lost to Philadelphia 5-2. The Ringers got two solo homers from Jimmie Hall and a 3-run shot in the 8th from Jason Thompson to break a 2-2 tie.

Charlotte Center Fielder Nets NL Award
Paul Hines, the Charlotte
center fielder, swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Northern League Player of the Week honors.

Hines piled up 11 hits in 23 at-bats, 3 home runs and 6 RBIs while hitting .478.

Week's Best Player Honored by SL
It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Southern League, but last week Yogi Berra of the Los Angeles Idols reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Berra rocked opposing pitching for a .517 average (15-29), no home runs and 6 RBIs to come away with the award.

Hitmen lose Sanders for season

First they lost Johan Santana for the season during spring training. Now, the Chicago Hitmen have taken another brutal blow, losing ace Ben Sanders for the season with elbow surgery.

Doctors confirmed that the 32-year-old has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. They indicated Sanders wouldn't be able to resume baseball activities until 2019.

After a complete game three-hitter on opening night in Boston, Sanders had been knocked around in two starts against Wichita and Indianapolis. The PBL's winningest pitcher in its history, with 161, Sanders has been remarkably durable in his career, going to the DL only once - with a strained oblique that kept him out the final two months of 2013, shortly after Chicago acquired him from Arizona.

Rudy May will take Sanders' spot in the rotation.

The Hitmen are 10-7 in the early going, three games behind first place Sacramento.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Jackson Selected Top Performer in NL
One of the league's most exciting young players, Joe Jackson of the Louisville Racers earned himself Northern League Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week, the 23-year-old left fielder had a lofty .435 average (10-23), collecting 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

Southern League Named Kerr POW
Buddy Kerr is respected by most Alabama Airmen fans for his no-frills style of play. The 28-year-old shortstop went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Southern League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .625 average (15-24) with no home runs, 2 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

Yeah, that's a rough loss for the Hitmen. Their offense is clicking early, though, led by the re-emergence of Roger Connor after an off season last year.

Louisville Signs Jackson to Extension
The Louisville Racers have finished a deal with All Star leftfielder Joe Jackson that will extend his stay in Louisville through the 2021 season.

The back-to-back Northern League Outstanding Hitter is offer to another torrid start, batting .343 with 2 homers and 9 RBIs in the early going. Though Louisville already had Jackson locked up through next season, they decided to approach Jackson now and he took the deal, for an astonishing small raise that bumps him up to $4.73 million a season.

Jackson, 23, is currently in the middle of a 14-game hitting streak.

Knights lose Bedard

Disappointing news today for New Orleans Knights fans. Erik Bedard, who returned for a second go-around with the Knights this offseason but has struggled mightily in the early going, has been diagnosed with a shoulder strain and will be out of effort indefinitely.

This season-to-date, Bedard has fashioned a 1-2 mark and 10.73 ERA in 24.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .358 against him and his WHIP is an astonishing 2.22.

The Knights have stumbled out to a miserable 7-15 start, initiated by their dropping their first six games of the season. In today's game, Pete Rose was the only starting batting better than .250.

Tom Underwood will take Bedard's spot in the rotation.

Jackson Hits in 20th Straight

Louisville Racers leftfielder Joe Jackson has had a pretty nice run in the arly season. He was named Player of the Week, he was given a contract extension to stay in Louisville, and today extended his hitting streak to 20 games by going 3-for-4 in a 6-4 win at New York.

"Sure we are happy that we won, but seeing Joe extend his streak was also special," said jubilant Louisville manager Bill Virdon. "He's a special player who is capable of doing some amazing things at the plate."

Jackson singled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and walked in the 9th.

Jackson is hitting .361 in 2018 with 14 RBIs and 2 home runs.
