New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Hi guys,
Been away for a bit starting work on restarting my 1967 HW replay. Some of you may remember some time ago I'd started replaying all the HW/LHW fights from 1967 rating new fighters as I went along. Well that dragged out for about the first 1/2 month of January then it kind of fizzled going on and doing other things. Well I've always wanted to get back into that. I've always been intrigued by that year in heavyweight fighting with all the goings on of Clay/Ali and the WBA tournement to replace him as the heavyweight champ. So I'm going to restart this project with a little twist. I'm going to rewrite history some and see what would 1967 maybe have been like amongst the heavies in boxing IF Clay/Ali had not been stripped of his title and had been allowed to continue on boxing? Well, it's going to be a little bit of time yet before I get into the actual replay as I'm going to try to do a lot of the leg work up front, rating all the heavyweights who fought even once in 1967 who we've not seen done yet. I may include still the LHW's or at least the most prominent ones for the year or those who fought any HW's. I'd think I'll do all the LHW's as I'd probably never get started with the replay. To help me with this I've even started picking up some 1967 Ring magazines off Ebay to give me some insite into the going ons in boxing that year. I've gotten about 5 of the months. I'd never owned or seen any old copies of the Ring. Really great stuff if you like to read up on the history of the sport. I've started by searching through BoxRec to get a list of all HW's who fought for each country at least once int 1967. I've got every country searched through now except the US which I'm still only through the C's. But, with that I'm going to start going through and rating guys who I don't have in my data base at this time. I've attached a zipped copy of an Excel 2000 spreadsheet showing all the HW's I found so far in my search through BoxRec. It lists the fighter, his record at the start of 1967, his career record, his Nationality and there's inserted a link that will open up his boxrec page. The column marked DIV shows if he's a HW or LHW. If there's something in that column for the fighter listed I've got a rating for him currently. If it's blank, those are the ones I'll be rating. There is currently listed here some LHW's. I'm going to check for more later when I get all the HW's done. As you can seen, most of the prominent HW's for the year are already done. A lot of 1,2,3 fight guys, that will pad your bank of tomato cans for you if you like. As mentioned, I still got quite a list of US fighters to search through yet. After a lot of jumping around here and there working on various things rating fighters, I'm going to really work hard at sticking at this one and get all these guys done to then do this replay. I'm going to rate everyone at prime and then do the adjustments via the game once I start the replay dependent on where the fighter is at in his career. |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
And here's the first 5 new fighters, working down in order of my spreadsheet. All these guys are from Argentina.
Alberto Benassi Rating 1 HW 1957-68 4 wins / 11 losses / 0 draws / 2 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Benassi's record shows 4 fights in 1957, winning the first then loosing the next 3, 2 by KO. His next fight is December 1965, a 6th round KO of Miguel Angel Silva. In 1966, he then looses fights to Jose Giorgetti, Santiago Alberto Lovell, Eduardo Corletti, and twice in a row to Oscar Bonavena. In April 1967 he knocks out Luis Caru in the 2nd round for his 3rd career win. In September Benassi is then KO'd in the 2nd round by Lovell. In early 1968 he's then stopped in 5 and 3 rounds by Giorgetti and Bonavena. In October 1968 he fights Humberto Ghiotti, winning a 1st round DQ victory. Justo Benitez Rating 1 1957-69 5 wins / 17 losses / 2 draws / 3 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Benitez shows his first fight, a 10 round draw with Jose Angel Manzur, a very busy LHW of the late 50's to mid 60's, in November 1957. A couple months later, Benitez then managed a 7th round TKO after the doctor stopped the fight for his opponent. Three losses then followed in 58 to Rodolfo Diaz, Gregorio Peralta an Guillermo Dutschmann. In June 1959, he managed to avenge his first loss to Peralta by out pointing him in 10 rounds. Justo then lost to Dutschmann again and was KO'd in the 6th in Feb 1960 by Humberto Loayza. After an April 1960 TKO victory over Aurelio Diaz, he lost fights to Dutschmann and Manzur and fought a 10 round draw with Juan Baylon in a fight in which both fighters were down in the eight round. Even with those set backs though, in Sept 1962 he fought Gregorio Peralta for the Argentin (FAB) HW Title. Peralta won the decision in 12 rounds. Benitez fought again less then a month later to win a 10 round decision over Jose Manzur again. That was then followed though by four straight fights through 1963 with Peralta, ,loosing 3 by decision and the last one by 6th round TKO.Benitez then is shown missing then from the ring by BoxRec until April 1967 when he's knocked out in the 8th by Santiago Alberto Lovell. After a 4th round TKO over Humberto Ghiotti, in August of 67, Benitez then looses to Luis Pires, Peralta and Lovell in 1967. After a 2 year absence again, Benitez looses one more time in December 1969 to Lovell. Miguel Carranza Rating 1 1963-71 16 wins / 12 losses / 1 draw / 11 KO Hometown/Birthplace: Cordoba, Argentina Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Carranza was an Argentinian local fighter all his career fighting pretty much the other local club fighters who also went no where else with thier careers. Carranza did fight Andres Selpa late in Selpa's career, in July 1964. Selpa KO'd Carranza in the 6th. Sometime in 1969 Carranza fought an Oscar Wondryk for the Cordoba State HW title. Wondryk TKO'd Miguel. Luis Caru Rating 1 1967-69 1 win / 3 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Won a 10 round decision over Miguel Angel Silva in Feb 1967 then lost by 2nd round KO to Alberto Benassi in April that year. Fought again in May 1968 being KO'd in 3 by Adolfo Cardozo and again was stopped by Cardozo in Feb 1969. Alejandro Gallardo Rating 1 1959-68 2 wins / 10 losses / 3 draws / 2 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Gallardo fought sparingly from 1959 thru early 1962 with a 2-4-3 record. The 3 draws were in 1959 against Jose Angel Manzur, Guillermo Dutschmann and middleweight Farid Salim. In October 1959 and November 1960 he lost 10 round decisions to Andres Selpa and Manzur and in October 1961 lost another 10 round decision to Salim. In January 1962 Selpa knocked out Gallardo in 5. After that Gallardo dissappears until Sept 1965 when he's knocked out in the 1st round by Santiago Lovell. Lovell knocks him out again in the 9th round in Feb 1966. A month later Selpa wins a 10 round decision over Gallardo. In August of 66 he looses by 3rd round KO to Alex Miteff. In June 1967 Gallardo looses to Jorge Omar Tissera, whom Gallardo had beaten twice in 1961 for his only career victories, when the physician stops the fight. Good to see you back to your fine work Rocco. Angentina seemed to produce quite a few HW back in that era. Some were tomato cans but you had quite a few that were good and even contenders like Bonavena and Lovell. Looking forward to your re-creation of 1967 without Ali being stripped. A young Frazier vs. a prime Ali would be a good one.

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Richardo Medina Rating 1
Argentina LWH 1962-67 2 wins / 10 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Not sure why BoxRec has this guy listed as a HW. IN his career he fought Welters, Middleweights and LHW's?? His only wins were over a middleweight Andres Cejas in 1962 and managed a draw against Cejas in 1963. Medina's losses were all by KO or TKO, twice to Welterweight Jose Lino Lemos(32-4-1,26KO), once to MW-Antonio Aguilar(79-18-11,15), once to MW-Ignacio Magallanes(36-6-12,13KO), once to Miguel Carranza, his one heavyweight opponent and that was in 1963. In 1965 he lost his only fight to MW-Alberto Massi(22-28-7,15KO). In 1966 there were early round knockouts to WW-Jorge Jose Fernandez(114-10-3,81KO) twice and to LHW-Ramon Avenamar Peralta. In 1967, his last fight he was KO'd in the 2nd by LHW David Bondulich. Again, not sure why he's listed as a heavyweight. I went ahead and did this quick rating as a Lightheavy for the heck of it. No playtesting done with it though. Doubt I'll even use this guy in the 67 replay. |

In December 1965, Tonga's LHW Sipa Fine knocked Casey out in the 2nd round for Casey's first defeat. Casey then didn't fight for almost 2 years before coming out to knock out Ned Maric in 7 round in November 1967. A week later he was stopped in the 2nd round by Foster Bibron due to a cut eye. After a win over untried Jim Hastingsm Casey lost a 12 round decision to Bobby Stininato, drew 10 rounds and lost 10 rounds to Jose Humberto Menno. In October 1968 Casey won a 15 round decision over Bibron to win back the vacant Australian HW title. After that though it was three lost 10 round decisions in 1968 to Menno, and twice to Mani Vaka. Buck Jones Rating 1 0 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Was KO'd in the 3rd round by Foster Bibron in october 1967. Jones' nationality is not listed in BoxRec, but since this one fight was in Australia, I'm assuming he's from down under. |

Boston then did not fight again till May 1969 and on through November 1970 he lost three times to Bert Perry(14-8-0,10) for the Bahaman HW Title. Boston did manage to take the title from Perry defeating him in a 12 round decision in October 1969, only to loose it back to Perry a year later. He also lost once to John Hudgins(15-20-5,12) durin g this span. From 1971 through 1973, Boston defeated Carl Baker twice, but lost fights to Bobby Lloyd twice, Dave Lee Royster and LHW Tim Wood(19-11-1,7). After a 4-1/2 year layoff, Boston staged a brief comeback in 1978 but was knocked out both times in two fights against Adnros Ernie Barr. |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Here's the other two Bahamian HW's from 67 that I found....
Bert Perry Rating 1 1967-83 14 wins / 8 losses / 0 draws / 10 KO Trainer: Kid Chocolate Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Perry started his career with 1st and 2nd round knockout wins over Joe Brewster(7-5-1,3) and Ray Batey(8-10-4,5) in Sept and October 1967. It was then almost a year later until Sept 1968 when he faced Canadian Bob Cleroux who was winding down his career. Cleroux stopped Perry in the 5th round. After that in 1969 came wins over Ollie Wilson and Boston Blackie twice(for the Bahaman HW Title). Then in July and October 1969 he lost by 9th round KO to Levi Forte and 12 round decision to Blackie(loosing the Bahaman title). From 1970 through May 1971 Perry won 8 fights, 7 by knockout against mostly very marginal opponents, though he did beat Blackie to regain the Bahaman HW Title in November 1970. In july 1971 he lost his HW title to Baby Boy Rolle by 8th round TKO. That was the start of loosing 5 of his last 6 career bouts fighting very sporadically over the next 10 years. Two of the losses were to Carl Baker and once to Kip Lane in March 1983. Man Power Rating 1 1967 0 Wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 0 KO Rating bY; Rocco Del Sesto Was KO'd in 2nd round in February 1967 by Carl Baker. Man Power?? Who knows..... |

New 1967 Heavyweight Replay Project
Here's the only additional Belgian to the 67 HW's....not much....
Louis Croes Rating 1 1967-71 0 wins / 7 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Croes fought Hans Jorgen Jacobsen srom Denmark in April 1967. Jacobsen at 6-1-0 was starting in 1967 to garner some discussion in the heavyweight circles. Jacobsen stopped Croes in the 1st round by TKO. Croes lost 3 more fights in 1967 including twice to fellow Belgium, Freddy Hubert(2-9-0,0). Croes lost twice in 1968, once in 1969. He then last fought in Feb 1971, his only non loss, a 4 round draw with someone named Yvon Because whom BoxRec notes had not fought from 1963 through 1970. |
