Monday, May 23, 1960 YANKS CRUISING IN SUPREME LEAGUE WITH 8TH CONSECUTIVE WIN... 3-GAME BULGE OVER DELTA AND ZEBULON The first place New Yerby Yankees are cruising along with an unbeaten season so far in the South Island Supreme League standings... the Yanks nabbed their 8th consecutive win and increased their lead to 3 games over runners-up Delta and Zebulon, but it wasn't a breeze... they were really tested by 4th place Meraux Tigers, but it wasn't easy... New Yerby survived a scare with a 5-4 triumph and kept their record spotless this season... last place Braxton shocked the Delta Stars 6-5, while Zebulon was blasting the Jackson Jackalopes 13-3... in the remaining game Bar Harbon bested the Mystic Mariners 6-1. MY LIFE IN 1960
EC's Not So Nifty in '60 Yep, life is blah and mundane on the mountaintop in Turkey. Work, sleep, eat and in many cases, just drink at the NCO Club when you are not working or sleeping... since EC is not a drinker, I went to the NCO club to mix and mingle with the guys... I was one of the few folks at the base that was a teetotaler. I sipped on a Coca-Cola and enjoyed some good food from the NCO Club kitchen. It was good, tasty food. Better than our Mess Hall. However, the Mess Hall food was fairly good, except for the powdered milk and the powdered eggs. They don't have the EC Seal of Approval. Nope, we did not get fresh milk and fresh eggs in Turkey. I have not missed the powdered eggs and powdered milk at all, y'all. I have gone 63 years without them and have done quite well, indeed. Most of the guys on the base had a calendar on the back of the door in their rooms. They checked off each day so they would know when they would go home. I didn't have a calendar on my door. I didn't want to know - not until I got FIGMO - that is a military term for "frig it, I got my orders". Sorry, EC has never used bad language in my life. I've been around it, but thank goodness I just never used it. EC don't smoke, drink or cuss, but I am tolerant of people that do those things. EC ain't perfect, either. Not by a long shot. I have my flaws, too. I'm just a sinner saved by the grace of God. Sadly, EC still commits a sin or two every now and then. But I have found the closer I get to God, the less and less I sin. Pleasing God is now my purpose in life. And no, I don't always please him. Thank goodness, He's still working on me. My roomate was Jesse Marshall from Wink, Texas. He went to school with the great rock singer Roy Orbison at Wink High School. Jesse played quarterback for the Wink Wildcats and he led them to the high-school football championship. Jesse was a great roommate and real good guy except when he came in from a long night at the NCO Club. Jesse enjoyed his brew. He would kick on my bed and challenge me to get out of it and fight him. When he was in a non-sober state, Jesse would call me a teetotaler and want to fight me. Jesse would say, "I know you don't drink and don't like me drinking. Well, do something about it. Get out of that bed and do something about it. If you do, I'm gonna kick your tetotaling butt." Nope, I didn't get out of the bed and defend my honor. EC's philosophy is "Discretion is the better part of valor". Otherwise he was a very gentle and soft-spoken guy. Jesse Marshall was a real good friend and a good old boy most of the time. Wanna know something? I don't think Jesse even remembered kicking my bed at night on occasion. And speaking of good old boys, since jg2977 is just about the only person that comments in my dynasty threads. I'm going to cover the 1960-61 National Hockey League season just for him. jg2977 is a big time hockey fan. About all EC knows about the NHL is that Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion and Jacques Plante were great hockey players and the Montreal Canadiens were a sports dynasty. I also vaguely know about the "blue line" and that you get 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and no points for a loss. That's how you determine the winning team. The team with the most points. (Taken from Wikipedia with lots and lots of thanks. If you use it like I do, please donate to them) The 1960–61 NHL season was the 44th season of the National Hockey League. The Chicago Black Hawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals four games to two to win the Stanley Cup. It was the first series since 1950 with two American-based teams. It was Chicago's first Cup win since 1938. Red Wings' forward Gordie Howe became the first player in NHL history to score 1,000 regular-season points. On September 15, 1960, Maurice "Rocket" Richard announced his retirement from hockey. During his career, he had led all scorers with a record 544 goals plus an additional 82 goals in the playoffs. Rocket once scored 50 goals in 50 games. This season, the Chicago Black Hawks were a strong team. They had an especially powerful defense, which had Pierre Pilote, Al Arbour, Jack Evans, and Elmer Vasko. Up front, youngsters Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita led the offense, and goaltender Glenn Hall was the Hawks' steady presence between the pipes. For the Montreal Canadiens, their defeat to eventual Stanley Cup champion Chicago Black Hawks in the first round ended two streaks (ten consecutive Finals appearances and five consecutive Stanley Cup wins). Wow, that is amazing domination. The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in the other semifinal to set up an all-American final between Chicago and Detroit. MY LIFE IN 1960
EC's Life Not So Nifty In '60 But movies, music and sports made my life pretty darn good... let's recap the 1960 NBA season... this is back in the days of just a few teams, which I much prefer... less is more... you could get immersed in leagues when MLB had 16 teams and only the World Series...not a fan of prolonged seasons and never-ending playoffs like the NFL, NBA and NHL today... way too many teams... NCAA football plays too many games and the season is too long, too... I wish they would limit the season to 10 games, plus an 8-team playoff for the national championship... get the season over before Christmas. I see some of my favorites are still playing ball and running up and down the hardwood in the NBA... Tom Gola, Gene Shue, Bob Cousy, Frank Ramsey, Bill Sharman, Tom Heinsohn... Bill Russell was the greatest basketball player of all-time, but he wasn't too likeable in person... of course, Bob Petit is still doing well... so is Jerry West, two of my all-time favorites... I liked Cliff Hagen with his hook shots, too... This was Bill Sharman's last season. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) The 1961 NBA playoffs was the postseason tournament of the National Basketball Association's 1960-61 season. The tournament concluded with the Eastern Division champion Boston Celtics defeating the Western Division champion St. Louis Hawks 4 games to 1 in the NBA Finals. The Lakers made the playoffs for the first time after moving to Los Angeles. They were one game away from their first Finals in L.A. as the St. Louis Hawks defeat them. The Division Semifinals were extended from a best-of-three to a best-of-five series. For the Celtics, it was their third straight NBA title and fourth overall. This would be the last Finals appearance for the Hawks franchise to date; though they still exist in the NBA as the Atlanta Hawks.
