We begin a 3 game series with manager Sparrow Smith (44-4.2) and his Jingoes today. We are 7-2 against them so far this season but they have won the last two, beating us 2 of 3 back at the beginning of the month in Detroit. They are 7th in runs scored with 4.5 per game (Detroit is 4th with 5.1). They are 5th in runs allowed with 5.2 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). Culver Field is the 2nd toughest place to hit in the League. I sent RF Jackie Porter (31-6.3) to Syracuse and recalled CF Tom Duncan (21-6.6). SS Hubbard Hooker (28-5.3) will get a trial at shortstop. Detroit Wolverines (48-24 .667 1st place in the Liberty League) at Rochester Jingoes (29-42 .408 18.5 GB in 7th place) William McLeod, Det. Yesterday, Dave Flaherty (65-7.8), who owned the Worcester Ruby Legs during the 4 years of their existence, 1879-1882, passed a way in his sleep from complications due to an undisclosed illness he had been suffering from for several months. The Ruby Legs finish last in their initial season in the Liberty League, but were a surprising 4th in their sophomore season, going 40-44. That was the highpoint of their run, however and they finished 6th and last their next two seasons and then folded. Today, we begin a 3 game series with manager/RF Ed Wakefield (26-5.8) and his Hoosiers. We are 7-2 against them so far this season and beat the 2 of 3 in Detroit the last time we met, at the end of June. They are 5th in the League in runs scored with 4.8 per game (Detroit is 4th with 5.2). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.6 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). Indianapolis' Seventh Street Park is a very nice place for hitters to practice their trade. Detroit Wolverines (51-24 .680 1st place in the Liberty League) at Indianapolis Hoosiers (31-44 .413 20 GB in 6th place) DeVaux makes his season debut today and he has not pitched in 2 weeks. This combined with the antagonistic nature of the ball park will grant him a pass on his performance today. Though Osborne's numbers look like we ought to score quite a few runs, the last time we faced him we only won 2 to 1 on a 2-out hit by C Evan Eckberg (30-3.5) in the bottom of the 9th. At bat, he walked and scored a run. He has won 8 of his last 9. Giddens gave us 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Grand National Association: Omaha (8) at Providence (9) in 10 innings: Ed Wison (25-7.3) (21-16) over Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (12-12). Providence scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie it and then the most bizarre ending I can imagine happened. A player reached on a dropped 3rd strike and then scored on 3 wild pitches! We begin a 3 game series with manager Pete Bucolo (38-4.1) and his Red Caps today. We are 7-2 against them so far this season and beat the 2 of 3 in Detroit a month and a half ago the last time we met. They are still 1st in the League in runs scored by a huge margin with 6.3 per game (Detroit us up to 3rd with 5.2). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 4.5 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.9). Boston's South End Grounds is pretty nice to hitters, but would still be behind Detroit, Cleveland and Indianapolis in that regard. Detroit Wolverines (53-25 .679 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Red Caps (42-36 .538 11 GB in 4th place) Boston has finished 1st or 2nd in the Liberty League for 7 straight seasons. They have won 4 Championships and each of the 3 times they finished 2nd they were only 1 game behind the winner. Here is a bit of trivia you may have forgotten: They are the only team still around from the inaugural season of 1876. But did you know that they finished last that year? Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 23-7 2.24 6.3-2.3-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Joe Peters, Bos. (30-4.9) (L 15-10 2.56 7.6-2.7-7.6) Lost - 7 to 3 Home Runs and errors; I am sick of both. It really is ridiculous the way the Red Caps have knocked balls over the fences in our games. This was the 10th time we have faced Boston and they have hit 9 home runs. We have hit 3 against them. Bush allowed 9 hits, 6 walks and struck out 5. He is now 2-5 in his last 7 starts. Peters gave us 6 hits, 5 walks and struck out 9. At bat, he had a hit. Each team made 3 errors, but we made all 3 of ours in the 4th inning when we gave up 3 runs. 3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 2 hits ad a walk, but nothing to show for it. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) went hitless, ending his hitting streak at 15 games. For Boston, LF Dan Abrams (28-5.1) led off the game with a home run, his 3rd of the season. 2b Mike Stables (30-7.1) had 2 hits and a walk and scored 2 runs. C Hub West (32-6.7) drew a walk and hit his 2nd home run of the year, he scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Both of his home runs on the season have been against Detroit. Liberty League: Cincinnati (6) at New York (3): Lou Ellard (28-6.3) (7-6) over Miah Turner (25-5.3) (16-18). Ellard allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Turner allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. Manager/LF Silver Borresen (32-6.9) had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. Philadelphia (13) at Rochester (11): Gene Rankins (29-5.4) (9-8) over Bill Henson (29-6.5) (10-22). Rankins allowed 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Philadelphia committed 11 errors. 2B Tuck Pierce (29-5.5) hit a double and a triple, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Cleveland (15) at Indianapolis (2): Bill Henrichs (27-7.4) (7-5) over Joe Osborne (28-3.0) (4-11). Henrichs allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. LF Tom Laarman (25-7.8) hit 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Joe Coffey (30-5.2) had 3 hits with a double and 2 walks, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Grand National Association: Baltimore (4) at Pittsburgh (5) in 10 innings: Tom Lilly (26-6.4) (21-14) over Sammy Berry (26-5.5) (0-1) in his first major league start. The game ended when Berry made an error. In 10 innings, Lilly allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. Berry allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. Rookie 2B Freddy Horne (24-1.6) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. Omaha (1) at Providence (2) in 10 innings: Dave Frazier (26-5.7) (4-6) over Bill Hamilton (28-5.4) (9-9). Rookie 3B Ed Knight (23-5.1) had 3 hits with a double and ended the game with an RBI single. In 10 innings, Frazier allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit. Hamilton allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit. The Grays have won 7 in a row. Milwaukee (5) at Kansas City (9): Lew Burnett (25-4.5) (12-15) over Dan Burton (31-4.9) (17-22). Burnett allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Manager/CF Connie Frenette (31-4.7) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Last season, he led the GNA with 24 doubles; today he hit his 5th. Brooklyn (1) at Chicago (6): Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (24-17) over Al Green (23-3.8) (24-13). Stanley allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he walked twice and scored a run. He has won 5 in a row and is 16-4 in his last 20 decisions. Green allowed 8 hits, 7 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double. He has lost 4 of his last 5. C George Sandefur (30-5.8) had 2 hits with his league-leading 8th home run of the season, a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. With this win, Chicago takes over 1st place. Brooklyn retakes 1st place. |

Owner Joseph Campbell (54-3.3) of the Rochester Jingoes fired manager Sparrow Smith (44-4.2) after yesterday's loss to Philadelphia dropped them into last place. Today he announced the hiring of John Wells (42-5.6). Wells has never managed in the major leagues. Last season, he managed Jersey City of the Eastern League (A) to a 5th place finish. In 1884, he led Grand Rapids to the championship of the Northwestern League (A). Back in the old National Association, he was a good-hit/no-field outfielder for Kansas City. Detroit Wolverines (53-27 .662 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Red Caps (44-36 .550 9 GB in 3rd place) Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 23-8 2.30 6.4-2.4-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Joe Peters, Bos. (30-4.9) (L 16-10 2.50 7.5-2.8-7.6) Won - 5 to 3 Bush allowed 11 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. Our outfielders throwing out 5 base runners helped quite a bit. This was, by far, our season high in that category. In the 80 games previous to this one, our outfielders had thrown out a total of 29 runners. Editor's Note: Our 0.4 outfield assists per game may seem high by today's standards (MLB in 2015 is averaging under 0.2), but in 1886 the major leagues averaged almost 0.6 per game. The Liberty League and GNA are averaging about 0.5 per game. Detroit's totals are a bit low partly because the players who have played the most in our outfield only have average to slightly above average arms but mostly because we allow fewer base runners than any other team. Indianapolis leads the majors with 70 (0.86 per game). Their left and right fielders both have exceptional arms and their center fielder has a decent one and they allow a lot of base runners. Peters gave us 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. We made 3 errors and Boston made 4. LF Fred Bianco (27-6.9) had a hit and 2 walks, but nothing to show for it, partly because he was caught stealing twice. He also threw out a base runner. 1B Fred Parrish (27-5.7) only had a walk, but scored 2 runs. 3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. C Evan Eckberg (30-3.5) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Willie Kirby and RF Pat Womack did not do much at the plate, but Kirby scored a run and each of them threw out 2 base runners. SS Al Shaffer hit a triple and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Cincinnati (7) at New York (2): Charlie Branham (26-4.2) (8-5) over Miah Turner (25-5.3) (16-19). Branham allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored a run. In 7 innings, Turner allowed 4 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. He had to leave the game in the 8th inning with a strained calf muscle, but should be fine in a day or two. RF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Philadelphia (3) at Rochester (5): Bill Henson (29-6.5) (11-22) over Fred Barrow (34-4.7) (12-18). Henson allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Barrow allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. C Jim Martin (25-5.0) had 2 hits and scored a run. For Philly, 2B Tuck Pierce (29-5.5) hurt his shoulder and should miss about 2 weeks. Cleveland (1) at Indianapolis (2): Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (8-19) over Willis Kornfield (33-6.0) (2-7). Giddens allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. He is 4-2 in his last 6 starts. Kornfield allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Rookie LF Lew Veith (27-5.6) had a hit and a walk, stole 2 bases and scored a run. Grand National Association: Omaha (7) at Pittsburgh (2): Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (13-12) over Whitey Mathews (23-4.1) (23-17). The game was tied at 2 runs apiece until Omaha scored 5 times in the top of the 9th. Sprague allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Mathews allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. 3 hits and 3 errors and a walk in the 9th did him in. Rookie LF Fred Negus (22-6.7) hit a triple in the 9th inning when the bases were loaded. For Pittsburgh, their best hitter and last year's GNA MVP, SS Jim Ware (32-5.6), injured his shoulder and will miss about a month. Brooklyn (9) at Kansas City (10) in 10 innings: Dan Butler (29-4.7) (9-17) in relief of Lew Burnett (25-4.5) over John Ritch (31-7.8) (12-9) in relief of Al Green (23-3.8). With the game tied at 6, Brooklyn scored a run in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but Kansas City scored a run in the bottom half to tie it back up. Then Brooklyn scored twice in the top of the 10th, but Kansas City scored 3 times in the bottom half to win. 2B Al Sarbacker (25-4.8) hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. His double tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. P Dan Butler, who only pitched 1 inning and allowed 2 runs in the top of the 10th, made up for it by hitting a 2-out bases-loaded double in the bottom of the inning to plate 3 runs and win the game. Milwaukee (7) at Chicago (12): Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (25-17) over Dan Burton (31-4.9) (17-23). Chicago was up 12 to 0, before Milwaukee scored their runs in the 8th and 9th innings. Stanley allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. 7 of the hits and 5 errors came in those final 2 innings. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. He has now won 6 decisions in a row. 3B Adonis Warren (37-5.1) had 4 hits with a double and his 4th home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 5 RBIs. Chicago retakes 1st place. For Milwaukee, 1B Willie Burton (31-8.5) hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had 4 RBIs, but slightly fractured his foot and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. |

Mathews allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. 2B Bones Collins (31-4.4) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Baltimore (8) at Providence (9) in 11 innings: Dave Frazier (26-5.7) (5-6) in relief of Tom Blomberg (28-4.7) over Sammy O'Quinn (24-5.9) (5-11) in relief of Pop Yurkovich (34-5.6). For Brooklyn, rookie 1B Lew Bell (29-4.2) had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Milwaukee (1) at Chicago (7): Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (26-17) over Zachary Buchanan (25-4.0) (17-25). We begin a 3 game series with manager Paul Richards (45-5.4) and his Spiders today. We are 8-4 against them on the season so far and took 2 of 3 from them in Cleveland at the beginning of this road trip over 3 weeks ago the last time we faced them. They are 4th in the League in runs scored with 5.2 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 5.2). They are 7th in runs allowed with 6.1 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). Cleveland's League Park is the toughest place in the League to hit a home run, but will give up other hits with generosity. I sent CF/2B Tom Duncan (21-6.6) back to Syracuse and recalled RF Jackie Porter (31-6.3). Detroit Wolverines (54-27 .667 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cleveland Spiders (36-42 .462 16.5 GB in 5th place) We are 4-3 against the rookie Pedersen this season. William McLeod, Det. (27-5.6) (R 16-13 2.61 7.2-2.9-6.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Pedersen, Clev. (24-5.1) (R 18-18 3.56 10.3-2.1-3.4) Won - 12 to 5 This game should not have been played. It rained all day and both teams had a hard time fielding the ball. Of course, Cleveland seemed to have a tougher time of it than us. McLeod allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and a walk. We had 14 hits and made 4 errors. Cleveland made 12. Yes, 12. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 1 hit and scored 3 runs. SS Russell Gardner (32-6.4) hit a double pulled a muscle and will miss the next 2 weeks. SS Al Shaffer (26-5.6) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. I recalled SS Hubbard Hooker (28-5.30) from Syracuse to take Gardner's spot. For Cleveland, RF Joe Coffey (30-5.2) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Philadelphia (1) at Cincinnati (2): John Stevens (29-8.2) (22-13) over Ted Ryther (32-4.3) (11-22). Stevens allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI. He has won 5 of his last 6 starts. Ryther allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. 3B Bill Alexander (29-5.5) hit 2 doubles and scored a run. Rochester (9) at New York (8): Ed Hodges (26-3.2) (16-16) over Jack Roberts (34-6.1) (21-16). CF George Everman (30-6.3) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. C Jim Martin (25-5.0) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. For New York, LF Pussy Wise (25-6.8) had 3 hits, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Charlie Warner (32-9.2) had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. C Frank Douglas (31-5.8) had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Grand National Association: Omaha (4) at Pittsburgh (1): Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (14-12) over Tom Lilly (26-6.4) (21-16). Sprague allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. Burton has lost 5 in a row and is 3-17 in his last 20 starts. 1B Tommy Casale (26-3.7) had 4 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored 2 runs. Last edited by Questdog; 07-22-2015 at 08:46 PM. |

Friday the 13th! I am not superstitious, but I am leery of superstitions. The Chicago Colts added former MVP, OF Candy Simpson (27-6.8), to their roster this morning. He has not played since he injured his shoulder in the 2nd game of the season. The Colts have made it to 1st place without him and I do not think they are going to be worse with him. He elected not to play any games in A Ball to get back in shape. Detroit Wolverines (55-27 .671 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cleveland Spiders (36-43 .456 17.5 GB in 5th place) Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 24-8 2.30 6.6-2.5-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Willis Kornfield, Clev. (33-6.0) (R 2-7 4.58 10.5-3.2-3.8) Won - 6 to 0 I told you there was something in those superstitions. Just this time the bad luck landed on Cleveland. Bush allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Kornfield gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. We did not make an error and Cleveland made 7. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Liberty League: Philadelphia (1) at Cincinnati (8): Lou Ellard (28-6.3) (8-6) in relief of Charlie Branham (26-4.2) over Fred Barrow (34-4.7) (12-19). Branham had to leave after 3 innings with a pulled muscle, but should be fine in a week or so and probably can pitch with the injury. In 6 shutout innings of relief, Ellard allowed 1 hit, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Rookie SS Rosie Hutchinson (29-5.9) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Rochester (5) at New York (8): Miah Turner (25-5.3) (17-19) over Bill Henson (29-6.5) (11-23). Turner allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. 1B John Hilliard (26-7.2) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Indianapolis (9) at Boston (8): Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (9-19) over Joe Peters (30-4.9) (16-12). Indianapolis pounded out 19 hits off Peters. LF Jimmy Sanders (29-6.8) had 4 hits, stole a base and had 3 RBIs. SS Bob Moran (34-4.5) hit 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Grand National Association: Baltimore (3) at Providence (9): Ed Wison (25-7.3) (22-17) over Sammy Berry (26-5.5) (1-2). Wison allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Rookie CF Al Young (22-4.8) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. RF John Froom (38-6.2), on his birthday, had 3 hits with a double and his 5th home run of the year, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. Omaha (3) at Chicago (4) in 10 innings: Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (27-17) over Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (14-13). SS Bob Robertson (23-4.1) led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to win the game. He had 5 hits with 2 triples and stole 2 bases, but only scored the one run. In 10 innings, Stanley allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. He has now won 8 decisions in a row and is 19-4 in his last 24 starts. Sprague allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. Well, Friday the 13th was bad luck for Calvin Biron (38-9.0) as he lost his job as manager of the Baltimore Orioles after yesterday's loss to Providence. Owner Aaron Collier (59-7.9) announced this morning than Tom Pouncey (45-3.9) would run the team the rest of the season. Pouncey has not managed in the major leagues before. Last season, he led Oswego of the New York State League (A) to a last place finish. He has managed for 5 seasons in the high minors and his best finish was 2nd place as skipper of Fort Wayne in the Northwestern League (A) in 1881. In his playing days, he was a catcher, but never made it above the low minors. Detroit Wolverines (56-27 .675 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cleveland Spiders (36-44 .450 18.5 GB in 5th place) Sal DeVaux, Det. (31-3.5) (R 1-0 1.00 5.0-1.0-5.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Willis Kornfield, Clev. (33-6.0) (R 2-8 4.08 10.2-3.0-3.7) Won - 8 to 6 For the 1st time this season, we went back-to-back games without making an error. And it is a good thing, too, because DeVaux pitched very poorly. We have never gone 3 games in a row without an error. DeVaux allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Kornfield gave us 14 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. We did not make an error and Cleveland made 5. 3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) had 2 hits and 2 walks, but no runs or RBIs. CF Fred Bianco (27-6.9) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and threw 2 runners out at the plate in the same inning. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk and scored a run. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 2 infield hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 2b Jocko Cole (24-6.1) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Willie Kirby (24-2.1) had a hit, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For Cleveland, C Kid Wright (31-7.3) had 3 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and had 2 RBIs and threw out 3 of 5 on steal attempts. The ball he hit over the right field fence was probably the longest hit we have seen this year. I wanted DeVaux up here because I thought his control was good and he would not give up many home runs, but both of those thoughts proved mistaken today. Liberty League: Philadelphia (8) at Cincinnati (4): Gene Rankins (29-5.4) (10-8) over Charlie Branham (26-4.2) (8-6). Rankins allowed 13 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. They told Branham he could pitch with his injury, but they did not say he could pitch well. 2B Smith Yocum (28-5.5) had 4 hits with a triple and a home run, scored twice and had 4 RBIs. Rochester (11) at New York (7): Olaf Powell (32-4.1) (1-0) over Jack Roberts (34-6.1) (21-17). Powell allowed 10 hits, 6 walks and struck out 2. Roberts has lost 4 starts in a row. CF George Everman (30-6.3) had 4 hits with a triple, stole 4 bases, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. 1B Gus Ivey (30-6.3) had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Indianapolis (9) at Boston (14): Joe Peters (30-4.9) (17-12) over Joe Osborne (28-3.0) (4-12). Peters allowed 9 runs for the 2nd straight game, though he won this time and only 1 of the runs was earned. Boston made 7 errors, but Peters did not pitch well, either. RF Charlie Warner (32-9.2) had 4 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. 2B Mike Stables (30-7.1) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. For Indianapolis, 1B Frank Roche (38-4.7) tore his calf muscle and will miss the rest of the season. Grand National Association: Milwaukee (4) at Pittsburgh (5): Whitey Mathews (23-4.1) (24-18) over Zachary Buchanan (25-4.0) (17-26). Mathews allowed 11 hits, 5 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit. Buchanan allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He is now 2-12 in his last 14 starts. 1B Tom Coponen (30-7.0) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 4 bases and scored 2 runs. LF Billy Galloway (25-5.3) sprained his elbow and will miss a week. Brooklyn (2) at Providence (11): Tom Blomberg (28-4.7) (20-18) over Al Green (23-3.8) (24-14). Blomberg allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Green has lost 4 in a row. 1B Charlie Gregor (27-5.2) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Baltimore (6) at Kansas City (7): Al McClaughry (22-5.6) (19-22) over Pop Yurkovich (34-5.6) (15-20). The winning run scored int he bottom of the 9th with 2 outs on an error. RF Tommy Dyer (28-3.8) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Omaha (5) at Chicago (3): Tom Lee (28-6.0) (22-13) over Pat Seguin (22-4.4) (6-5). Lee allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. He has now won 11 starts in a row. Seguin allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. 3B Bones Collins (31-4.4) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Last edited by Questdog; 07-23-2015 at 04:33 PM. |
