Noguchi was a Red through the 40's and 50's. Baseballs all time wins leader with 442. He was probably a good pitcher on a great team, and benefited from that. Won 6 World Series with that 40's Reds Dynasty

St. Louis trailed 4-0 in game 7 before coming back. They won the game in the ninth inning, when Jim Thome drew a bases loaded walk! So close to an all Chicago World Series which would have been very cool. Oh well. This is still a pretty good series. This will be the first meeting between the White Sox and Cardinals. Both have been around since the beginning.

St. Louis has a amazing offense. As a team, they almost hit 300!! There really isn’t a dead spot in that lineup. Itsuki Asai is playing CF as Chuck Carr will miss the series with a sprained knee. Carr stole 63 bases this year, with a .284 average. So he will be missed. St. Louis has scored then most runs in a season since the Phillies teams of the 20’s and 30’s that featured Suttles, Ruth and Gehrig!! They feature Thome, Canseco and Biggio, not quite the same, but pretty damn good. I’m not to enamored with the Cardinals pitching. As long as they are average, I think they will be fine.

Chicago qualifies for the World Series after being a wild card team. The Wild Card saved them after they blew their shot at a division title with the last game collapse against the Rangers. They have the best pitcher in baseball. They have some young, up and coming stars in Juan Gonzalez, Jorge Posada and Koyashi Arai, but look completely outclassed in every way. I’d guess Dwight Gooden needs 3 wins for this team to upset the Cardinals. I’m ofcourse usually wrong though!

I see that Eric Anthony hit 35 HRs in 1994.
Would you mind showing Eric Anthony's and Pete Incaviglia's stats through 1994.
I am curious if those two individuals lived up to their potential in your "What If?" History

Game 1 is huge, as I believe the White Sox need to win when the good Doctor is pitching to have a shot in this series. Craig Biggio homers off of Gooden in the first, and the White Sox immediately trail 1-0. Doc settles down and begins to cruise, but Cards starter Cal Eldrad does the same, holding the Sox scoreless though 5.

In the 6th, the Cards get to Gooden. St. Louis scores 3 times on 2 hits, 2 walks, a HBP and an error to go up 4-0. Juan Gonzalez gives the White Sox a bit of hope, with a 2 run homer in the ninth, but Bill Risley gets the next to guys out, and game one is in the books. 4-2 St. Louis.

Already feeling the pressure, the White Sox score first in game two on a Hal Morris first inning double. Jorge Posada goes deep in the fifth, which scores Fernando Vina, and the Sox lead 3-0. They got something going here. Dean Palmer hits a solo shot cutting the lead to 3-1, bun in the next inning, Paul Sorrento goes deep, scoring Hal Morris. That ends up being enough. St. Louis gets 3 on a Jim Thome homer, to make it close. Chicago ties the series with a 5-4 win.

Both teams trade runs in the first, both teams score twice in the fifth. Jose Canseco breaks the deadlock with a solo shot in the sixth. St. Louis then flashes their power and puts it away in the 7th. Gary Sheffield, Rusty Greer and Jose Canseco all homer. Cards win game three, 7-4.

Gary Sheffield opens the scoring with a 4th inning home run off of Dwight Gooden. Gooden allows a 2nd Cards run on a Henry Rodriguez home run the next inning, but Jorge Posada evens the score with a 2 run shot in the bottom of the inning. Gooden pitches a good game, and gives his team a chance. No more scoring would occur before we head to extras. In the 11th, the Cardinals get 2 on with 2 out. Jim Thome singles home the go ahead run. Then Rusty Greer doubles home two. Greer would also score after a Jose Canseco single and a wild pitch. Four runs were enough to put the White Sox away. 6-2 St Louis and a 3-1 series lead.

Sheffield does it again. He opens the game with a 2 run homer, and the Cards jump out ahead. The White Sox respond, their number 3 hitter, Hal Morris homers, bringing in both runners who reached before him, and after an inning, Chicago is ahead 3-2. An error by 3B Jeff King leads to 3 Cardinal runs in the 4th, and they lead by two again. Chris Sabo provides the dagger to the heart. He hits a 3 run homer in the 7th, and that’s all she wrote. The Cardinals win the game 8-5 and take the series in 5 games!

Sure.

Here is Eric Anthony, whose pretty great player these days

And here is Pete Incaviglia, who has had his time, but seems to be on the way down by 1994.

Being a long time suffering Astros fan, seeing those stats that Eric Anthony is putting up makes my stomach hurt.

1994-95 Offseason News and Notes

To me, this is a draft full of journeymen. Todd Helton is a nice number 1 pick, and looks like a real hitter. The rest are all MLB talent, but not anyone to really be excited about. I’d say Oakland and Florida did really nice.

Mike Schmidt was elected to the Hall of Fame last season, but with me limiting inductees, he had to wait until this year. He received 75.3 percent of votes last year, and probably would have got more this season if he wasn't already in. Charlie Hudson is also elected with 76% of votes this season. Hudson is a very underrated pitcher, who wasn't mentioned a whole lot by me. Great career numbers, and amazingly threw no-hitters about a month apart!

Dwight Gooden, easily the best player of the last decade is a free agent again!!

I’m not sure how Ramon Martinez got more then Doc Gooden. One possibility: Gooden signed with Detroit, leaving a huge hole in Chicago, so they overpaid to get Martinez as a replacement. Also want to mention the Marlins signed Rickey Henderson and Roger Clemens! Neither are close to their prime. Judging by the deals signed, Detroit is the huge winner, getting the best player at what looks like a discount!

Mariano Rivera should be healthy around week 2 of the season. At that point, someone will scoop him up on a 1 year deal. Doesn't make sense for a team not to give him a contract all offseason because he has an injury. He put up fantastic numbers last year.

Here are the offseason trades

Surprised that Sean Casey went so low. Do you mind showing me what his potential ratings are?

You do not know how thrilled I am with Joe Nathan.

Mike Lowell and Tejada are nice mid-first round picks too. Also think Konerko will have a HOF career in COL. Casey and Pierzynski are great picks too.

There's still a chance for Mo to be a Yankee!

How's Horner been the last few years, btw? How many homers?!

Glad to see my Cardinals won it all. Only fitting they took out the Cubs in the process (sorry Cubbie fans). I noticed the Rockies seem to be putting a few pieces together...drafting Paul Konerko and trading for J.T. Snow, Jermaine Dye and Fernando Tatis. Unless they have no pitching, looks like the Rockies could be on the rise.

Horner had a really nice 1994 after struggling a tad in the previous few years. 30 home runs in 96 games after a trade to Minnesota is a fantastic power surge. He's coming home in 1995. Horner has signed on with the Chicago Cubs for the upcoming season.

The Rockies also have Vladamir Guerrero, who is the #2 prospect in baseball!
