United States - Featherweights - Round 1 - Part 6

Round 1 - Part 6:

Danny Kramer vs Gil Cadilli - Cadilli was cut in the 2nd, on the canvas in the 3rd and stopped in the 4th when the cut reopened for the Kramer TKO.

Leo Johnson vs Red Chapman - Chapman was the agressor, scored the lone knockdown & landed not only the most shots but the harder shots, but somehow the judges saw it 7-6 Johnson, 7-7 even and 8-6 for Johnson by majority decision.

Petey Hayes vs Carlos Chavez - Hayes opened strong with a knockdown in the 1st round then forged the early lead as Chavez ran more than danced for the next several rounds. Chavez fought back and took a handful of rounds, but it was Hayes that took the 9-5, 9-5 and 8-6 decision.

Mike Dundee vs Ty Cobb - Cobb was getting the better of it in the early going when Dundee landed a huge flurry of punches that put Cobb down for the count early in the 4th round.

Harry Blitman vs Tommy Collins - After an uneventful first round Collins came out and landed a huge right hand that put the favored Blitman to sleep for the upset KO.

Mike Belloise vs Frankie Crawford - A back and forth bout that saw neither man marked, but not a lot of action either. It went the distance with the scores going 8-6 Crawford, 8-5 Belloise & 7-6 for Belloise.

Clarence Adams vs Rudy Garcia - Adams and Garcia both refused to give an inch as they traded punches with some vicious infighting throughout. Adams opened a cut on the bridge of the nose of Garcia in the 3rd that widened throughout until in the 5th the ring doctor ordered the fight halted for the Adams TKO on cuts.

Frankie Toledo vs Georgie Hansford - A terrific action bout between 2 boxers saw several momentum changes throughout. Both men sported cuts and bruising as they did serious damage to one another throughout. I had it 7-7 even while the judges had it 8-6, 7-7 and 8-6 for the favored Toledo.

United States - Featherweights - Round 1 - Part 7

Round 1 - Part 7:

Brooklyn Tommy Sullivan vs Dwight Hawkins - A back and forth slugfest that saw Hawkins down in the 9th. He came back strong, dropping Sullivan in the 11th then poured it on until the referee halted it for the upset TKO.

Frankie Sodano vs Harry Jeffra - A lot of fireworks in this one as both men landed bombs. Jeffra scored an 8 count knockdown in the 11th round, but Sodano was landing more frequently & with harder shots most of the fight to earn the 9-6, 9-5 and 9-6 decision.

Everett Rightmire vs Don Johnson - Johnson kept the pressure on, but Rightmire boxed well at times throughout the bout. I had it 7-7 through 14 and the judges had it 8-5, 7-6 and 7-7 for Johnson through 14. In the 15th round Johnson came storming out of the corner and landed a series of hooks that put Rightmire down for the count and secured the upset for Johnson.

Austin Rice vs Jimmy Kelly - A dominant performance by the underdog Kelly saw Rice bloodied and battered, with his right eye nearly closed. Rice didn't see the hook that laid him out in the 14th for the KO. Kelly was up 10-2, 10-1 and 9-3 through the 13th round.

Matt Remillard vs Hector Lizarraga - A fight that was dead even though Remillard nearly closed both of Lizarraga's eyes. In the 12th Remillard scored a knockdown, then added 2 more in the 13th before the referee halted the bout. The fans loudly cheered the heart of Lizarraga who gave as good as he got during this bout.

Johnny Marcelline vs Ray Lunny - Action packed early, Lunny scored the first knockdown of the fight in the 8th round. Marcelline returned the favor in the 9th and 11th rounds. The 12th through the 15th didn't have much action, as both men were exhausted by this time. The judging was close, with the scores being 5-6, 7-5 and 8-5 for the winner by split decision Marcelline.

Eddie Lenny vs Jason Pires - A decent tactical bout with good action throughout saw both men moving well and countering when one would take the lead. I had Pires winning 8-5 while the judges had it 9-4 Lenny, 9-4 Pires and 7-6 for the survivor Lenny by split decision. With so many close rounds it really was anyone's fight. Pires had the higher work rate, landing 312 of 2320 punches thrown through 15. Lenny was more economical but far more accurate landing 323 of 621 shots.

Pat Iacobucci vs Charley Riley - Riley controlled the pace of this one, outlanding Iacobucci by over 100 shots while scoring a pair of knockdowns enroute to the 9-3, 10-3 and 9-3 decision.

United States - Featherweights - Round 1 - Part 8

Round 1 - Part 8:

Babe Herman vs Leo Rodak - A defensive battle for the most part, Rodak survived a 5th round knockdown by Herman to go the distance. With little to pick from on so many rounds there was little suprise when the judges scored it 8-6 Rodak, 8-6 Herman & 7-7 even for the draw. The rematch to follow.

Calvin Grove vs Augie Sanchez - Sanchez did a great job of forcing the action, taking the early lead behind knockdowns in the 7th and 8th rounds only to have Grove drop him with a wicked body shot that put Sanchez down for the count in the 9th round!

Jackie Graves vs George Siddons - Graves kept control of this action packed bout by winning several rounds with flurries at the end of the round. In the 9th round however his customary flurry turned into lights out for Siddons as a hook floored him and he couldn't respond to the count.

Oscar Gardner vs Doc Snell - Gardner was brilliant the first 10 rounds, building up a solid lead. Snell turned the tide in the 11th then in the 13th landed a series of shots that had Gardner staggering around the ring like a drunken sailor when Gardner's corner tossed in the towel as their man was out on his feet.

Derrick Gainer vs Benny Soloman - Soloman opened a cut in the 3rd over the left eye of Gainer. Gainer came out in the 6th desperate to end it, scoring the lone knockdown of the fight. The cut reopened in the 7th round and ended the bout for the mild upset TKO.

Troy Dorsey vs Jackie Wilson - Not a lot to hang your hat on in this one as there was little action. Both men were sporting cuts over their right eyes that were bleeding profusely in the 6th, after the doctor cleared Dorsey to continue, Wilson's widened, halting it later in the round for the TKO.

Steve Cruz vs Bill Bossio - A back and forth affair that saw each man have great moments only to have to do it again as the judges had it 8-7 Cruze, 8-6 Bossio and 7-7 even for the draw.

Carmelo Costa vs Ruben Castillo - Castillo was the agressor, taking it to Costa throughout the fight, getting off first and often with hard shots that nearly closed the left eye and left Costa bleeding from the forehead. In the 12th Castillo really poured it on, and though there were no knockdowns, it was clear that Costa couldn't defend himself when the referee halted the bout for the TKO.

Rematch:

Babe Herman vs Leo Rodak - Another defensive battle, but with more action as Rodak built a solid lead then Herman would storm back. Both men sported cuts over the right eye with the cut on Herman's eye being the deciding factor as it became too bad for him to continue in the 14th round for the mild upset by Rodak.

Steve Cruz vs Bill Bossio - This looked to be a carbon copy of the first fight, only this time Bossio opened a nasty gash over the right eye of Cruz that reopened several times, the final time in the 10th for the TKO win.

That's the end of round 1. There have been some good fights in this division thus far, and no reason not to expect even more action the next round!

United States - Featherweights - Round 2 - Part 1

Round 2 - Part 1:

Willie Pep vs Danny McBride - Pep was in control throughout, using great movement and a jab that popped McBride so badly that his left eye was near closed & a cut was opened in the 8th that ended the fight as it was just on the hairline streaming directly into the eyes of McBride for the TKO.

Sandy Saddler vs Johnny T Griffin - Saddler came out smoking, landing a cross, a pair of uppercuts, a jab followed by a hook, another uppercut and a cross that laid Griffin out 38 seconds into the first round for the KO.

Abe Attell vs Tom Johnson - Attell started strong, taking the first 5 rounds with ease. Johnson found a rhythm, landing combos and closing the distance in the middle rounds only to fade in the final 3 as Attell took the decision 10-5, 12-3 and 10-5.

Johnny Kilbane vs Danny Valdez - Most of the fight Kilbane seemed content to dance, prance and pot shot now and then. That made for a dull fight, but Valdez just didn't have the answers to be able to take it to Kilbane, allowing for the easy 11-3, 7-6 and 11-3 decision.

Bobby Chacon vs Tommy Collins - Everyone expected fireworks in this one since both Chacon and Collins were billed for their explosive punches. Chacon didn't disappoint, controlling the 1st round then landing 2 hooks for knockdowns in the 2nd, the final one for the KO with 1:04 left in the round.

Benny Bass vs Dwight Hawkins - Bass took the first 5 rounds, then Hawkins came on strong, cutting the ring off well against the ever moving Bass to take a lead going into the final 3 rounds. Bass came back to take the final 3 rounds and earn the 8-6, 6-7 & 8-5 split decision win.

Tommy O'Toole vs Don Johnson - Johnson landed more shots, but they came in the rounds he won. O'Toole controlled the pace of the fight most of the way through, earning the 8-6, 5-8 and 8-5 split decision.

Freddie Miller vs Jimmy Kelly - Kelly was cut in the 2nd by an accidental clash of heads. Each round was close, I had Kelly up 3-2 through 6 as in the 7th the cut reopened sending the fight to the scorecards. The judges had it 3-2, 4-2 and 3-2 for the upset win by Kelly.

United States - Featherweights - Round 2 - Part 2

Round 2 - Part 2:

Danny Lopez vs Charley Riley - With Lee in the front row cheering him on, Lopez ended a huge first round with a knockdown. Riley came back furiously in the 2nd and 3rd rounds only to have the momentum swing as Lopez had dominant 4th and 5th rounds, then continued the carnage into the 6th where he scored the knockout. Lee was thrilled to see his man move forward, & predicted that he'd go far in this tourney.

Kevin Kelley vs Leo Rodak - A low action bout saw Rodak open strong then Kelley take over from there. In the 8th Rodak shocked with a knockdown, but faded after that as Kelley took the 7-6, 9-6 and 9-6 decision.

Louis Kaplan vs Doc Snell - Snell opened the early lead and held it through the 10th, but Kaplan took over from there as Snell suffered a cut from an accidental butt in the 11th round that reopened in the 13th to halt the action and send it to the score cards. The judges scored it 7-5 Kaplan, 6-4 Snell and 7-5 for the winner by technical split decision Kaplan.

Rocky Juarez vs Benny Soloman - After Juarez and Soloman traded a pair of feeling out rounds Juarez scored the first knockdown of the fight in the 3rd. Soloman and Juarez traded furiously in the 4th, with Soloman appearing to get the better of it, then Juarez landed the KO shot half way through the 5th round.

Dick Finnegan vs Bill Bossio - A close fight for the first 10 rounds as both men had good moments. The tables turned as Bossio faded and Finnegan asserted himself to earn the 9-5, 9-5 and 8-6 decision.

Johnny Dundee vs Ruben Castillo - Dundee negated Castillo's power by good side to side movement, darting in for combos then back out again to win the 8-4, 7-5 and 8-5 decision.

Battling Battalino vs Troy Dorsey - Dorsey took a while to get untracked, thus Battalino took the early lead. Dorsey scored the lone knockdown of the fight in the 8th & the fight became rather heated when in the 11th Battalino opened a cut over the left eye of Dorsey that ended the bout for the Battalino TKO.

Chalky Wright vs Jackie Graves - Wright boxed effortlessly in the early going, but Graves kept coming, finding his distance half way through then coming on strong to secure the draw 6-6 on all 3 cards.

Rematch:

Chalky Wright vs Jackie Graves - A grueling bout that saw Wright open cuts over and under the right eye as well as a busted lip for Graves. Graves also was swelling around the right eye, but he kept coming like a freight train, scoring a knockdown in the 8th as well as 2 in the 13th enroute to the well earned minor upset 8-5, 8-6 and 9-5.

United States - Featherweights - Round 2 - Part 3

Round 2 - Part 3:

Gene Smith vs Calvin Grove - A close action packed bout saw Grove moving well at times, but Smith closed the gap well landing shots to the body and forcing Grove to counter furiously to keep up. While Smith focused on the body, Grove focused on head shots and opened a cut over the left eye in the 4th and reopened it in the 7th then the 8th for the TKO on cuts.

Eddie Shea vs Eddie Lenny - Shea kept the slick boxing Lenny in front of him the entire fight, keeping the heat on. Whenever Lenny would rally Shea would take it up a notch, piling up the rounds. Shea scored a 10th round knockdown then opened a cut over the right eye of Lenny. With Lenny's right eye nearly closed from swelling, the cut burst open again in the 12th for the TKO.

Petey Scalzo vs Johnny Marcelline - Scalzo never let Marcelline really hit a rhythm defensively, scoring 4 knockdowns, the 4th for the KO in the 13th round. Marcelline fought back bravely, but had no answer to the power of Scalzo.

Tommy Paul vs Matt Remillard - Remillard was the agressor, and kept things close throughout, but it was Paul's movement & his flurries at the end of rounds that took the judges hearts 9-5, 8-6 and 8-6. I had it 7-7 for the draw myself.

Davey Moore vs Frankie Sodano - Sodano had some terrific moments, including the first knockdown of the night in the 4th round, but Moore controlled the pace thus won the lion's share of the rounds. He responded to being knocked down by scoring knockdowns of his own in the 8th, 10th & 11th round before the referee halted the bout as the game Sodano was seriously hurt.

Robert Guerrero vs Frankie Toledo - A terrific back and forth tactical bout saw Guerrero up by one round through the 15th. A cut he initially suffered in the 11th round reopened in the 15th that ended the bout sending Toledo to the 3rd round.

Glen Flanagan vs Clarence Adams - After a slow feeling out round Flanagan asserted himself defensively and offensively with sparkling movement & timely combinations, opening a cut on the inside of the mouth of Adams and another over the left eye. Adams gamely came back, and on my card was leading when in the 10th the cut over the eye reopened and ended the bout for the Flanagan TKO.

Young Corbett II vs Mike Belloise - Corbett II pressed the action throughout & Belloise was unable to handle the pressure, going down in the 13th then twice more in the 14th round. The fight went the distance with Corbett II easily taking the 11-4, 12-3 and 12-3 decision.

United States - Featherweights - Round 2 - Part 4

Round 2 - Part 4:

Eddie Compo vs Mike Dundee - A lot of offense in this one as they traded rounds throughout the bout. Dundee landed the lone knockdown in the 8th round, but Compo came back strong in that same round. Many rounds were close, I had it 7-7 even while the judges had it 8-6, 6-8 and 8-6 for Compo. Dundee landed 364 of 1415 shots while Compo was more accurate with a lesser work rate, landing 414 of 1006 shots.

Benny Yanger vs Petey Hayes - Not much to hang your hat on in this one, making for a low offense close fight to score. Neither man was in trouble in this one, though Hayes had some swelling around the left orb. It went the distance with the judges scoring it 7-7, 8-6 Hayes and 8-5 Yanger for the draw.

Tommy White vs Leo Johnson - A terrific action bout saw Johnson dominate early, then in the 8th White scored 2 knockdowns then ripped off a series of dominating rounds to even things up. Johnson came back strong in the 12th, then in the 14th scored a pair of knockdowns of his own, the 2nd one for the KO as White couldn't get up.

Phil Terranova vs Danny Kramer - A good close action bout was Terranova push the action to take the early lead. Kramer changed tactics and became far more aggressive in the 8th & scored a knockdown for his efforts. He scored the 2nd knockdown towards the end of the 9th, this time for the KO to end Terranova's tourney dreams.

Bernard Taylor vs Jason Litzau - Taylor and Litzau put on a slugging clinic early, going back and forth throughout until the 8th when Litzau scored a pair of knockdowns. Taylor gamely came back but went down twice more in the 11th, the final one for the 10 count.

Richard Sue vs Cal McCarthy - A terrific boxer-slugger matchup saw Sue score 3 knockdowns only to have McCarthy do well in between them to keep the fight close. I had sue winning the final round with his 3rd knockdown to take it 8-7 while the judges had it 8-7, 7-7 and 8-7 for the winner by majority decision Sue!

Solly Smith vs Matty McCue - An amazing action bout saw McCue down in the 7th, Smith down in the 8th then McCue down again in the 9th. They continued to trade shots with bad intent, making for a very close bout then in the 13th Smith landed his 3rd knockdown early in the round then poured it on until the referee halted it for the TKO.

Chico Rosa vs Freddie Norwood - A lot of close rounds that saw Norwood flurry at the end to steal. Norwood scored an 11th round knockdown then a desperate Rosa scored one in the 15th before the fight went to the judges. They had it 9-5, 9-5 and 10-3 for Norwood.

Rematch:

Benny Yanger vs Petey Hayes - Yanger took the agressor's role, but Hayes handled it well, countering extremely effectively and scoring the lone knockdown in the 7th round enroute to the 9-6, 7-8 and 9-5 split decision win.

United States - Featherweights - Round 3 - Part 1

Round 3 - Part 1:

Willie Pep vs Jimmy Kelly - Kelly came to the understanding early that Pep couldn't seriously hurt him and was the aggressor throughout. Pep was his usual elusive self most of the bout however, landing well whenever Kelly got too close to earn the 11-4, 10-5 and 9-6 decision. Kelly's elimination removed the final fight-in candidate from the field.

Sandy Saddler vs Jackie Graves - Graves really took it to Saddler in the 1st round, but Saddler took over in the 2nd then hurt graves several times before the referee ended the bout in the 4th for the TKO. Most of the fans were unhappy with what they perceived as a premature stoppage, as was the corner of Graves, but this observer felt that Saddler was doing serious damage at the time of the stop.

Abe Attell vs Calvin Grove - Attell built up the early lead, but coasted in the middle rounds allowing Grove to get back in the fight. Attell then seemed to wake up again, taking the lion's share of the final rounds to earn the 9-5, 8-6 and 8-5 decision.

Johnny Kilbane vs Frankie Toledo - Both men were far more focused on defense than they were actually scoring points, making for some close rounds. Kilbane was a bit more accurate though, particularly in the later rounds to ern the 9-4, 7-6 and 7-5 decision.

Bobby Chacon vs Petey Hayes - Hayes shocked everyone in the 1st round, scoring a flash knockdown at the end of the round. Neither man was effective in the 2nd, but then Chacon started to find the mark in the 3rd, having Hayes left eye nearly closed at the end of the 7th. It was the 8th round that was Chacon's finest work however as he opened cuts over the left eye and under the right eye, then scored the KO shot with 4 seconds left in the round.

Benny Bass vs Leo Johnson - This one had more action than one would expect between a pair of stylists, with Johnson jumping out in front only to have Bass come back then score 4 knockdowns in the fatal 10th, the final one for the 10 count!

Tommy O'Toole vs Danny Kramer - Not much to pick from as both men spent their time outside with the exception of a few rounds. This made for very close scoring as the judges had it 7-6 Kramer, 8-5 O'Toole and 7-6 for the winner by split decision O'Toole.

Danny Lopez vs Jason Litzau - Lopez's management held a drawing prior to the fight to choose a fan to handle the water bottle in the Lopez corner for this bout. Our friend Lee won the drawing and got to see the fight up close & actually encourage his man throughout the bout! After splitting the first 2 rounds with good action as Lopez cut off the ring well in the 1st, Litzau moved well and countered effectively in the 2nd. In the 3rd however Lopez was able to get to his man, landing a series of body shots followed by a stiff uppercut that floored Litzau for the 8 count. Lopez was able to then follow up with bomb after bomb until the referee halted the bout for the Lopez TKO! Lee was able to hoist Lopez up on his shoulders and carry the victor around the ring!

United States - Featherweights - Round 3 - Part 2

Round 3 - Part 2:

Kevin Kelley vs Freddie Norwood - In a close slugfest that saw Kelley try to dance early, Norwood scored the lone knockdown in the 14th round. It was a cut over the right eye of Norwood that would be the deciding factor however as it reopened in the 15th round for the Kelley TKO. The cards were 6-6, 6-6 and 9-4 Norwood through the 14th round.

Louis Kaplan vs Solly Smith - A good bout that saw Smith keep the pressure on the dancing Kaplan throughout. Kaplan gradually pulled ahead however, using superior hand speed to score in bunches. Smith had a huge 15th round, but wasn't able to close the deal, sending it to the judges who scored it 8-7, 8-6 and 9-5 for Kaplan.

Rocky Juarez vs Richard Sue - Sue flat out dominated the favored Juarez, becoming incensed when Juarez intentionally head butted him in the 4th round. He scored knockdowns in the 9th and the 14th rounds enroute to the lopsided 10-4, 10-4 and 9-5 decision.

Dick Finnegan vs Eddie Compo - Compo scored a knockdown in the 6th round, but other than that it was pretty much all Finnegan from the opening bell as he takes the 11-2, 11-2 and 10-3 decision.

Johnny Dundee vs Young Corbett II - Dundee moved well, but Corbett II did a great job of pressuring, keeping the fight even through the first 12 rounds. Dundee turned it up a notch in the 13th then the 14th with a pair of knockdowns before the referee halted the fight for the TKO win by Dundee.

Battling Battalino vs Glen Flanagan - Flanagan started well, but Battalino wore him down, nearly closing the left eye and scoring 3 knockdowns while landing 500 shots to only 211 for Flanagan as he took the 10-3, 9-4 and 10-3 decision.

Eddie Shea vs Davey Moore - Moore was cut in the 2nd round and what was turning into a compelling action bout ended abruptly early in the 6th when that cut reopened for the Shea TKO.

Petey Scalzo vs Tommy Paul - Scalzo was the bull to Paul's matador & did a good job of keeping him off balance early, scoring a 5th round knockdown. Paul came back strong though, scoring a huge knockdown of his own in the 12th round as this one went the distance. The scorecards were 8-6 Paul, 8-6 Scalzo and 10-4 for the winner by split decision Paul.

United States - Featherweights - Round 4

Round 4:

Willie Pep vs Richard Sue - Sue had some good moments, but trying to corner Pep is like trying to catch a greased pig, nearly impossible. Pep moved fluidly throughout, and rose to the occasion with crisp combos whenever Sue mounted a challenge. It went the distance with the judging being solidly Pep, 8-5, 10-3 and 9-4.

Sandy Saddler vs Tommy Paul - Paul gave Saddler fits early on as he moved very well. In the 9th Paul shocked Saddler by depositing him on the canvas with a perfectly timed combination. Saddler came back in the 10th on fire, scoring seemingly at will until late in the round he scored the KO shot. Saddler was up 5-4, 6-3 and 6-3 through the 9th round.

Abe Attell vs Eddie Shea - Both men were content to fight from a distance, and that made for a slow dull bout that Attell took 8-6, 8-6 and 9-5.

Johnny Kilbane vs Battling Battalino - A terrific bout that saw Kilbane score an early knockdown in the 5th as he built up a lead. Battalino kept moving forward however, scoring a knockdown in the 13th while opening a gash over Kilbane's left eye. The cut reopened early in the 15th round and the fight was halted by the ring doctor for the shocking upset TKO by Battalino!

Bobby Chacon vs Johnny Dundee - Dundee was brilliant in this one, moving well, darting in and out and keeping the power of Chacon nullified throughout. With many very close rounds it was a difficult bout to score, and it showed in the judging. The scores were 10-5, 6-9 and 10-5 for Dundee who secured the minor upset.

Benny Bass vs Dick Finnegan - Finnegan was on fire, scoring knockdowns in 5 separate rounds before a cut over the left eye of Bass reopened in the 13th for the TKO on cuts. Both men came out toe to toe, but it was Finnegan who was the stronger and faster of the two for the bulk of the rounds.

Tommy O'Toole vs Louis Kaplan - Kapland and O'Toole fought from a distance and it was Kaplan that was more accurate when they did scrap, earning the 9-5, 7-7 and 8-7 split decision.

Danny Lopez vs Kevin Kelley - Lopez was so impressed by Lee's knowledge that he hired him to work the corner for the rest of the tournament. "He's my good luck charm" said Lopez before the fight. Lopez started fast, building up a solid lead behind a 6th round knockdown. Kelley who'd been boxing changed tactics in the 9th, scoring a knockdown of his own, then came out trying to finish it in the 10th. Lopez started the round fast and looked to be back in control when Kelley unleashed a wicked hook that put Lopez down for the count ending the dreams of Lopez and our intrepid Lee.

United States - Featherweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Of the top 8 fighters in this tourney, only the top 3, Pep, Saddler and Attell remain going into this round.

Willie Pep vs Battling Battalino - Pep started fast, scoring a knockdown in the 1st round to set the tone, then peppered Battalino from every conceivable angle throughout the bout to earn the handy 11-2, 10-2 and 11-2 decision.

Sandy Saddler vs Johnny Dundee - A brutal bout that saw Saddler taking shots just to close the distance as Dundee continued to move away. Saddler landed bombs, including a knockdown in the 12th round but Dundee hung in there, landing shots with bad intent of his own. both men were cut and swelling, with Saddler's cut coming in the 15th round on the left eyelid. The ring doctor took one look at the cut and ordered the fight halted half way through for the Dundee upset TKO. To give you an idea of how close this bout really was, the judges had it 8-4 Saddler, 6-6 even and 7-5 for Dundee through the 14th round.

Abe Attell vs Dick Finnegan - An excellent technical bout that saw both men moving well and timing their shots at times. Finnegan had swelling around his left eye while he nearly closed Attell's left eye as well as opened a cut. It made the distance with very close scoring (I had it 8-7 for Finnegan). The judges had it 8-7, 8-6 and 9-6 for the favorite Attell, but either man was worthy of a win in this one.

Kevin Kelley vs Louis Kaplan - Both men boxed well at times, but it was Kaplan that controlled the pace of the fight despite a cut on the outside of the left brow. He puffed up both eyes of Kelley & landed twice as many jabs and combos to earn the 9-6, 7-7 and 8-6 majority decision.

United States - Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals & Final:

With Saddler being eliminated in the quarter finals I suspect Pep will sail on through, but Attel, Kaplan and Dundee have other plans.

Semi-Finals:

Willie Pep vs Johnny Dundee - This was a good match between two fleet stylists that saw Dundee cut in the 3rd round. He didn't let that bother him too much as his corner did a great job on it. Pep built up a solid lead, picking up the action whenever Dundee showed signs of life. In the 10th, well ahead on points Pep opened a gash on the hair line of Dundee that led to the early stoppage for the Pep TKO.

Abe Attell vs Louis Kaplan - Attell started fast, but Kaplan came back behind a lead right hand that flummoxed Attell. In the 7th round he landed another lead right that floored Attell for the count, shocking the audience & sending yet another top seed out of the tourney.

Final:

Willie Pep vs Louis Kaplan - Kaplan seemed to be fairing better than Pep's previous opponents, though Pep was gradually pulling ahead. In the 11th Pep's jab opened a gash over the left eyebrow that reopened in the 13th for the Pep TKO, sending the #1 seed to the World Tournament!

That's the end of a great Featherweight tourney with plenty of surprises, though there was no surprise that Pep moved into the World Tourney. He is now 7-0-0 (3) and the #1 Seed in the World Tournament.

The Jr. Featherweights are next up.

United States - Jr. Featherweights - Round 1

We have 16 fighters in the Jr. Featherweight division, top seeds are Junior Jones, Kennedy McKinney, Arthur Johnson and Jaime Garza.

Round 1:

Junior Jones vs Phillip Payne - This was all Jones as he pursued and cornered Payne throughout, taking his legs out from under him with a scintillating body attack then scoring knockdowns in the 12th then the KO in the 13th round.

Kennedy McKinney vs Alvin Brown - Brown boxed well, but was cut early. He stayed in the fight against the heavily favored McKinney, using slick movement & timely counter punching, but the cut reopened in the 13th round for the TKO. The score cards were 6-6, 7-4 McKinney and 7-5 for Brown through the 12th round.

Arthur Johnson vs Derrik Holmes - Johnson moved effortlessly and landed with good frequency, scoring a 9th round knockdown then coasting until the 15th when Holmes landed a knockdown of his own. Despite his efforts at finishing Johnson in the final frame, it was a moot point when the bell rang that Johnson would carry the day. He did, 12-3, 12-3 and 11-4.

Jaime Garza vs David Vasquez - Vasquez showed the heart of a lion despite being knocked down 7 times in this fight, he fought furiously having huge rounds only to lose them due to a knockdown at the end of the round. In the end, after the 7th knockdown in the 11th, the referee felt Vasquez had taken enough and rightfully ended the bout for the Garza TKO.

Mike Ayala vs Paul Banke - Ayala moved well, but Banke kept the pressure on, building up a solid lead on 2 out of the 3 cards, despite a 13th round knockdown. Banke opened a cut in the 14th on the hairline of Ayala that opened again early in the 15th for the TKO on cuts. Banke was up 8-6, 5-9 and 9-5 through 14 rounds.

Danny Romero vs Nicky Perez - Romero was cut in the 2nd round, but stellar work by his corner turned that into a non-factor. Romero build up a solid lead, then Perez came back with slick movement and timely combinations. In the 9th Romero scored the first knockdown of the bout then opened a gash over the left eye of Perez. Romero then scored 2 more knockdowns in the 10th round before the cut reopened for the TKO on cuts later in the round.

Mike Oliver vs Leo Randolph - Calling this a dull bout would have been a compliment. Oliver, while the nominal favorite didn't seem to want to fight, and Randolph, while more active couldn't seem to string things together. I had it 9-6 Randolph while the judges had it 9-6, 9-6 and 10-4 for the winner Randolph.

Willie Jorrin vs Jesse Benavides - An exciting bout that saw Jorrin move well while punishing Benavides as he bored in. Benavides was able to score well despite the punishment received. Several rounds were Round of the Year quality. Benavides had a huge 10th round then scored a knockdown in the 11th. He then continued to land serious hurt upon Jorrin until the referee halted the bout for the thrilling TKO.

United States - Jr. Featherweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Junior Jones vs Paul Banke - A fun fight that saw Jones down then cut later in the 3rd round on the forehead. Banke kept stalking, Jones fired back while moving away and scored a flash knockdown in the 7th round and then opened a cut under Banke's right eye. Banke got up and later in the 7th round reopened the cut on the forehead of Jones and the fight was stopped for the upset TKO!

Kennedy McKinney vs Leo Randolph - McKinney wasted no time, tripling up on the jab, then landing a combo followed by a cross then an uppercut for the KO in only :34 seconds of the 1st round!

Arthur Johnson vs Jesse Benavides - Benavides cut the ring off well at times, scoring on the inside as Johnson landed combo's in answer then slid away. Johnson was getting the better of the fight, opening a cut over the right eye of Benavides in the 5th despite major swelling around his left eye that started to develop in the 10th. In the 12th Johnson reopened the cut, then widened it before the referee halted the bout on the recommendation of the ring doctor. Johnson was up 8-3, 8-3 and 9-1, but the scores didn't show the furious action on the part of Benavides.

Jaime Garza vs Danny Romero - This started toe to toe with both men trading furiously until Garza shocked with a crisp uppercut that put Romero down for the count with 1:03 left in the first round. No-one expected this to go the distance, with 2 of the hardest hitters in the division, but the crowd was shocked by the brevity of the fight.

United States - Jr. Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Kennedy McKinney vs Paul Banke - Banke did a great job of getting to the dancing McKinney in this one. Banke was penalized for backhanding in the 6th, then McKinney scored the first knockdown of the fight in the 7th. In the 10th, Banke scored a flash knockdown and broke the nose of McKinney. The bleeding from the nose worsened the rest of the way before the referee halted the bout in the 13th for the upset TKO. Banke was up 7-4, 6-5 and 6-5 through the 12th. Banke's Cinderella run continues!

Arthur Johnson vs Jaime Garza - Garza was like a bull in a china shop in this one, bulling his way inside and scoring 5 knockdowns, the final two in the 12th round before the referee halted it for the TKO. Johnson fought valiantly, but just didn't have the chin to handle the power shots of Garza.

Final:

Jaime Garza vs Paul Banke - Fireworks were the order of the day in this one as both men traded furiously throughout. Garza scored a 3rd round knockdown only to have Banke come storming back. Garza was back in control in the 5th, then scored the 2nd knockdown of the night in the 6th round before the referee finally halted the bout with 49 seconds left in the round for the TKO. Garza moves to the World Tournament with a record of 4-0-0 (4).
