NY YANKS CONTINUE WINNING WAYS IN SUPREME LEAGUE, DELTA CLINGS CLOSE
Defending Supreme League champion New Yerby Yankees continued to roll up win after
win this weekend...they have captured all 6 games this season... however, the Delta Stars
are staying right with them, just one game behind... the Stars only loss came last month 5-4
in 10 innings to the Yankees... New Yerby is seeking to win its third straight league crown...
they also copped the South Island Secondary League title in 1958 and got promoted to the
Supreme League.

Yesterday New Yerby had a very close call at the hands of the Bar Harbor Cajuns and had to
pull it out 4-3 in the last 3 innings... Delta knocked off the Mystic Mariners 5-3 to hang close
in the pennant race... in other league action Zebulon defeated the Braxton Bruins 5-3 and
Jackson jumped all over the Meraux Tigers 9-3.

MY LIFE IN 1960
EC'S Life Is Really Nifty in '60

Did you notice the optimistic tone in my heading today?... yep, EC's life is nifty in '60... the music is marvelous in 1960... and as you know, music is one of EC's greatest pleasure in life, along with movies and baseball... of course, my lovely little wife.

The Billboard Song of the Year is a magnicifent instrumental by Percy Faith and his Orchestra "Theme from a Summer Place", which spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1960..

"A Summer Place" is a 1959 American romantic drama film based on Sloan Wilson's 1958 novel of the same name, about teenage lovers from different social classes who get back together 20 years later, and then must deal with the passionate love affair of their own teenage children by previous marriages. Delmer Daves directed the movie, which stars Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire as the middle-aged lovers, and Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue as their respective children. The film contains a memorable instrumental theme composed by Max Steiner.

Nope, the movie did not make EC top 100 movies of all-time... don't think it makes my top 1000 of all-time.
Sandra Dee is so beautiful... so is Troy Donahue... and the song is splendid... so sorry, can't say much else about the movie... 'nuff said.

Alright, all you guys and dolls, all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too, it's "TLC Time".. time for a little. "tender, loving, cuddling"... let's all cuddle up nice and close and comfy and go back to the good old Golden Days of 1960.

Lordy, mercy, here comes Percy.

NY YANKS WIN 7TH STRAIGHT... UP BY 2 GAMES ON RUNNER-UP DELTA
The South Island Supreme League's top team, the unbeaten New Yerby Yankees, took care of business Sunday afternoon and copped their
7th straight victory, while runner-up Delta was falling at the hands of the red-hot Zebulon Zips... this gave the Yanks a 2-game margin over
the Stars in the pennant race... running third in the standings are the Meraux Tigers and Zebulon Zips... they trail by 3 games.

New Yerby trimmed last place Braxton 5-3... Delta fell to the Zebulon Zips 8-1... Meraux nipped the Bar Harbor Acadians 5-4... and Mystic mauled
the Jackson Jackalopes 11-8.

MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life Is Filled With Glee In '23

Yep, uh huh, and yes indeed, EC has a great life in '23... I spent 2 hours today at a Nursing Home playing songs that the residents know and love... I play all the rock, pop and country songs from their teen years and college years and hopefully from their later years, too... I have a fine stereo sound system... over 7,000 songs in pristine condition... we spend the time singing, clapping and dancing... yes, they dance at nursing homes even though they are in wheelchairs and are not very mobile... we dance with our hands... some of the them move their feet, too... yep, some of them ladies shake their booties, too... I take their hands and we move and groove to the music... it puts a big smile on their faces and keeps me in shape... going to nursing homes is a very precious gift from God... if you can sing, dance, play an instrument, give it a try... it really is a special feeling to make these wonderful folks a little happier for a little while... and I get to go to another one tomorrow... I play music 6 times a month.

I'm also reading and enjoying Joe Posnanski's excellent baseball book "The Baseball 100" and learning about the baseball all-time greats... their greatness and their flaws... Posnanski tells it like it is... sometimes the "greats" are not so "great"... EC is finding out that many dads raised their little boys to be baseball players... Mutt Mantle was not the only dad to have his son raised to be a major leaguer... Bill Feller did it... he even built a "Field of Dreams" in his cornfield in Van Meter, Iowa for the "Heater from Van Meter" Bob Feller... Larry Jones wanted his son Chipper to be the next Mickey Mantle.

Mutt even required Mickey Mantle to "throw" with both hands, too... Mickey hated it... he promised his dad he would always be a switch hitter, if he didn't have to be ambidextrous, too... so Mutt Mantle let him stop throwing with his left hand.

"Quips and Quotes from The Diamond Minds"
(taken from Joe Posnanski's "The Baseball 100")

"My favorite Chipper Jones stat is this one: He is the only switch hitter in baseball history with a .300 BA from both sides of the plate. Chipper hit .303 as a lefty and .304 as a righty.
Mickey Mantle hit .330 from his natural right side, but .281 as a lefty.
Frankie Frisch hit .326 from the left side, but .292 as a righty.
(The following groups only hit over .300 from one side, but not both sides of the plate)
Bernie Williams, Victor Martinez, Jose Vidro and Dave Hollins were .300 hitters from the right side of the plate
Roberto Alomar, Pete Rose and Lance Berkman were .300 hitters from the left side."

THANKS TO LITTLEVILLE, GRIN HILL IS NEW LEADER IN SECONDARY LEAGUE
A team's destiny is not always determined by that team... many times you need the help of other teams... thanks to the Littleville Supermen, Grin Hill is all aglow and beaming ear-to-ear as the Smileys are the new leader in the South Island Secondary League... Littleville toppled Cherrywood 4-2 and enabled Grin Hill to move up into the top spot after the Smileys trounced the St. Dominic Saints 11-4 this past weekend... in other league action Parkland edged the Pelham Oaks 8-7 and in a battle of also-rans Joliet nicked the Billings Rams 5-4.

MY LIFE IN 2023
EC's Life Is Filled With Glee In '23

Thought you might want to know that Stan "The Man" Musial is my all-time favorite baseball player... I fell in love with him, the St. Louis Cardinals and their broadcaster Harry Carey lying in bed at night listening to KMOX radio in St. Louis back in my teenage years... that's why Stan is my avatar here on the forum...Stan "The Man" was also known as the "Duke of Donora"... his hometown was Donora, Pennsylvania.

"Quips and Quotes from The Diamond Minds"
(taken from Joe Posnanski's "The Baseball 100")

Here's a little bit of useless baseball trivia that most of us on the OOTP Forum loves... I doubt that any one of you knows this, so EC will enlighten you with something mystical.

Stan "The Man" Musial and Ken Griffey, Junior are two of the greatest and most beloved left-handed batters in baseball history... they both were born on November 21 in Donora, Pennsylvania... yep, baseball has its mystical moments.

Since EC was a DJ for 32 years, here is a song that says it all about my life in the 1950s listening to Harry Caray bring Stan "The Man" and my Cardinals "alive" on the radio

Here's one from the 1980s for all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too... here's Lionel Cartwright and "I Watched It All On the Radio".

MY LIFE IN 1960
EC's Not So Nifty in '60

Actually, that was not totally true... my sports life was pretty darn good... EC is still high on the mountaintop in Turkey... I already covered the basketball season... softball, now that was a story... we didn't have a field to play fast-pitch softball... we had to construct it ourselves... the Turkish governor gave us permission to build a field on the side of a mountain... the only problem was it was filled with 400 trees... the governor said we could use the land, but we had to agree to two conditions... all the trees would have to transplanted... and we had to allow the Turkish soldiers that guarded our base to use the field for soccer when were not using it... it was a weird field... the field slanted in right center and right field... there was about a 5-foot slope from the infield to the right field fence... but we adapted to it... there was nothing we could do... the field was level for the most part, but not in right field.

We had a 5-team league: Able Trick, Baker Trick, Charlie Trick, Dog Trick and the NCOs... my team Charlie Trick won the league championship... we finished 23-1... we won 20 games in a row... our only loss was to the last place NCOs... they beat us 3-2... the worst hitter in the league... he only got one hit all season long... he singled in a run in the last of the 9th and beat us.

Four of Charlie Trick players made the base team... shortstop Rick Fargnoli, second baseman Ron Rush, catcher Bill Peagram and EC at third base... I played well for Charlie Trick... hit about .275 and played really good defense at third base... all three of my teammates were first string on the base team.. they really were outstanding ballplayers and athletes... I didn't play much on the base team... just wasn't good enough... the first string third baseman was a much better hitter than me... don't remember his name, but he was from Housatonic, Connecticut... I couldn't hit at the base level... they would let me play late in a game that we were going to lose... our base team didn't do well in the base competition, but my three teammates made the All-Turkey Team... they went to Germany and won the Air Force Softball title in 1960... they also made the All-Europe Team, too... Charlie Trick players did darn well in the higher levels of competition... yep, they certainly did.

In the National Football League, it was the beginning of one of the great NFL dynasty team, the fabled Green Bay Packers under coach Vince Lombardi... this is Bart Starr, Jimmy Taylor and Paul Hornung... this Packers team went on to win 5 NFL titles... but not in 1960... Norm Van Brocklin and the Philadelphia Eagles took the title... the Packers won the Western Conference with an 8-4 mark and the Eagles captured the Eastern Conference with a 10-2 record... those were the good old days of sports when we had fewer teams... only two teams made the playoffs in the NFL... it was nice to have only 16 MLB teams, too, with just the World Series between the American League and National League champions... yep, EC think "less is more"... the Dallas Cowboys were an expansion team this year... nope, they did not do very well... 0-11-1 in their inaugural season.

1960 NFL Leaders
League Champion: Philadelphia Eagles
Passing : Johnny Unitas (Baltimore Colts) 3099 yards
