Monday, May 19, 1952 GATORS JUMP 3 GAMES AHEAD IN SISL It's a tight race in the South Island Second League, but not for first place... the Guedon Gators (9-3) are chomping up everybody in sight and now have built up a three-game bulge over second place Meraux (6-6) and St. Dominic (6-6)... the three other clubs, Delacroix, Chitamaca and Bayou Bleu, are tied for the cellar with 5 wins and 7 losses. Guedon won its sixth straight, whipping Chitamaca 6-3... St. Dominic derailed Delacroix 7-1... and Bayou Bleu picked up its third triumph in a row, sneaking past Meraux 7-6. |

MY LIFE IN 1952
EC Just Havin' Fun in '52, Too! Well, a big how do you do from Danderoo deep in the heart of Dixie... Danderoo was my alter ego on the radio in the 70s, 80s and 90s... EC toiled as a DJ for 32 years. How are all of you buckaroos and you little darlin's, too?... it's right smack in the middle of May and I just thought you needed to know what the whole wide USA was swingin' and swayin' to... on the pop charts the number one song was a classical piece, Blue Tango by Leroy Anderson... it would hold on to the number one spot for 5 weeks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7gubYIUXJA And on the country charts everybody was two-steppin' and singin' along to one of the greatest country song ever, The Wild Side of Life by Hank Thompson and his Brazos Valley Boys... this song would remain in the top spot for 15 weeks in a row... How about that! Pay attention!... I want you to key in on the steel guitar and the twin fiddles in the song... wow!... the Brazos Valley Boys were great musicians... a superb western swing bank... nearly as good as the Bob Wills' Texas Playboys... and Hank Thompson was just about as good a country singer as you could find... boy, I was really happy the Country Music Association finally put him in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. Here's a sad saga in song... break out the Kleenex... it's a tearjerker...methinks, it will have EC crying in his Dixie Beer... and yes, I was an empathetic kid and in tuned with my feelings at age 12... just wonderin', what the heck does empathetic mean? https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...9&&FORM=VDRVRV Last edited by Eugene Church; 03-15-2020 at 12:11 PM. |

Monday, May 26, 1952 JOLIET JACKS JACKSON IN SHOWDOWN It was showdown time in Joliet this past Sunday... the first place Green Giants taking on the runner-up Jackson Jackalopes in the North Island First Division... it was quite a tense tussle with Joliet prevailing 3-2 in a comeback victory in the last two frames... now the Green Giants have a very comfortable 3-game edge over the Jackalopes... the Dutton Coyotes rallied past the Kofa Kings 4-3 and the New Yerby Yankees held on to top the Avalon Oldtimers 6-5... the Coyotes and Yanks climbed up to third place in the NIRL First standings, while the Kings and Oldtimers dropped down into the cellar. Perusing the NIRL First Division stats leaders after 13 games finds Joliet's Clancy Dupepe leading the league with a .388 BA, followed closely by Kurt Krieger of Dutton at .375 and Edward Nolan of Jackson at .370... Buddy Boyce of the Jackalopes is tops with 16 RBIs... and he is deadlocked with Tim Lytle of the Green Giants in homers with three each. On the mound Joliet's ace Grant Mosher is way ahead with 9 wins and a 1.98 ERA... Mosher has lost only 3 times this season... Dan May of Avalon (5-6) and Jalen McCoy of Jackson are second with 5 victories apiece... Jackson's Dusty Branson (2-2) is number two with a 2.23 ERA and Kofa's injured Brad Starr (3-4) is third with a 2.28 ERA. |

Monday, May 26, 2952 NIRL SECOND JAM-PACKED AT THE TOP Stockdale, Union Heights and Wafford are all bunched up at the top of the North Island Recreational League Second Division... the Wafford Eagles swept by Stockdale 4-3 and caused the deadlock... also Union Heights eased by the Theodore Bobcats 4-3 in another close one and moved up in the race... the Bobcats are just one game behind the trio, resting in the fourth spot... the lackluster Kinston Firebirds and West Chester Comets tangled with the Firebirds coming out on top 5-2... Kinston is three games back of the league leaders, while the Comets are five games off the pace. The batting leader in the NIRL Second Division is Theodore's third baseman Sidney Kimball... he is tops with a .500 batting average, going 20 for 40 in 13 games... in the second spot is Union Heights hurler Eddie Beal, a two-way star... he is batting .400 along with Wafford center fielder Manny Velasco... Andy Kessler of Stockdale and Carlo Vizina of Theodore top the home-run list with three each... Vizina is no longer a threat for the home-run title... he suffered a knee injury early in the year and is out the rest of the season... 9 other players are tied for the third spot with 2 roundtrippers apiece... the RBI leaders are Ivan Orsak of Theodore with 11 and Dave Strickland of Wafford with 10... Velasco is tops in hits with 24, while Kimball is second with 20... the stolen base leader is Caleb Carson of Theodore with 11. Union Heights' Eddie Beal has the most victories... he is 8-4... Wafford's Ron Myles is second with a 7-2 record... Sarge York of Stockdale is ranked third with 6 wins and 5 losses... Beal also is first with a 2.19 ERA, followed by Walter Johnson of Theodore with a 2.29 ERA... and Myles is third with a 2.69 ERA... York, Beal and Myles are 1-2-3 in strikeouts... York has fanned 65 in 91 innings, Beal 60 in 106 frames and Myles has 53 Ks in 87 innings pitched. Last edited by Eugene Church; 03-06-2020 at 06:34 PM. |
