The Cleveland Spiders added P Willis Kornfield (33-6.0) to their roster today. He has not pitched since March when he injured his shoulder. They have elected not to send him to A Ball to get in shape, so expect an ugly game or two from the get go. To make room for him, they sent ex-Haymaker P Harry Lamb (31-6.4) to Oswego in the International League (A).

Cleveland Spiders (28-27 .509 10.5 GB in 5th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (40-18 .690 1st place)

This is Kornfield's season debut and he has not thrown in a game since March, so we are expecting to score a pile of runs today.

Willis Kornfield, Clev. (33-6.0) (R 29-25 2.69 8.7-2.9-3.9 last season H-BB-K/9) vs. William McLeod, Det. (27-5.6) (R 9-11 2.94 6.9-2.8-6.8)

Won - 4 to 3 in 10 innings

That is not a pile of runs.....

If this is what Kornfield looks like rusty, I hope we don't face him when he is sharp. The only indication that he was not 100% was that his control was a bit spotty. We did not have an extra-base hit and we grounded into 3 double-plays.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th, 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) got his 1st hit of the day to end the game. Kornfield had previously struck him out twice.

In 10 innings, McLeod allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9.

At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Boston made 6 errors. RF Joe Olson (29-6.8) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs.

He now has a hit in 14 straight games. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) had a hit and 2 walks, stole a base and scored a run. C Jimmy Babcock (29-6.9) had 3 hits and scored 3 runs.

For Cleveland, 2B Jesse Flanders (26-5.4) pulled something and will miss about 3 weeks.

Liberty League:
Cincinnati (9) at Philadelphia (2): John Stevens (29-8.2) (15-11) over Ted Ryther (32-4.3) (9-16). Stevens allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. To make room for Gibbs, Pop Yurkovich (34-5.6) was sent to Jersey City in the Eastern League (A). Though I am sure he is not happy about it, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. If he stays there the rest of the season, he will be a free agent this fall and maybe can sign with a decent club for once in his career. If he has anything left. But he pitched a 1-hitter in his Eastern League debut today, so maybe he has some wins left in his arm.

Brooklyn (7) at Chicago (10): Pete Rinehart (27-6.2) (20-10) over Ren French (25-4.9) (13-12). Rinehart allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. We begin a 3 game series with manager/CF Silver Borresen (32-6.9) and his Reds today. We are 2-4 against them so far on the season and lost 2 of 3 against them in Cincinnati the last time we met, a month ago. In their first trip to Detroit they showed a rude propensity for hitting home runs, with 4 in the 3 games. And they did not have LF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9), the most prolific home run hitter of each of the past 3 seasons, in their lineup at the time. He is in the lineup now. The Reds are 2nd in the League in scoring runs with 5.5 per game (Detroit is still 4th with 5.2). They are 4th in the League in runs allowed with 5.2 per game (Detroit is #2 with 3.9).

Cincinnati Reds (32-27 .542 9.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (42-18 .700 1st place)

Won - 5 to 0

Our 2nd shutout in a row!

With the League's best offense behind him, Morlock has still managed to be under-supported. In his last 7 losses, the Red Caps have scored a total of 14 runs. He has lost 4 of his last 5, though his ERA has dropped from 2.17 to 2.10 during the stretch. 1B John Hilliard (26-7.2) had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year and 3 RBIs.

He was 12-4 at one point. CF Al Steel (26-7.0) had 3 hits and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. Pittsburgh has won 5 in a row and are 2 games behind Brooklyn, in 3rd place. Rookie CF Fred Negus (22-6.7), who must be the hottest hitter in baseball, had 4 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Cincinnati Reds (32-28 .533 10.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (43-18 .705 1st place)

Here's an interesting fact: since our #1 pitcher, Lou Townley (24-3.4) went down for the count, we are 28-9 (.757).

We have not faced Ellard, except in relief, this season. He has gone 9 innings against us and allowed 4 hits and 1 unearned run. He is 5-0 in his last 6 starts.

Oh, and the wind is blowing out today, so it looks like we will not get 3 shutouts in a row.

Lou Ellard, Cin. (28-6.3) (R 5-4 3.86 9.6-3.3-4.0 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 19-3 2.07 5.7-2.5-5.8)

Won - 7 to 6

Our string of shutout innings did not last through the 1st. This is a game we did not deserve to win, for sure.

Bush allowed 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Ellard gave us 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits.

We made 4 errors and Cincinnati made 5.

LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) hit a double and an inside-the-park home run, his 6th round-tripper of the year, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. RF Jackie Porter (31-6.3) had 2 hits with an RBI. 3B Fred Parrish (27-5.7) had 2 hits and an RBI.

For Cincinnati, 2B Jumbo Lynn (26-3.8) had 4 hits and a walk, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. RF Joe Turner (26-6.6) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs, but broke a bone in his foot and will miss 4 to 5 weeks.

Liberty League:
Boston (4) at Indianapolis (2): Joe Peters (30-4.9) (12-6) over Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (4-15). Peters allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 9. Giddens allowed 8 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. LF Charlie Warner (32-9.2) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. For the Hoosiers, C Fred Smith (31-6.8) had 3 hits with a home run and 2 RBIs.

New York (8) at Rochester (9): Bill Henson (29-6.5) (9-16) over Jack Roberts (34-6.1) (15-12). Henson allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. Roberts allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. 1B Pete Hinde (30-7.9) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Cleveland (3) at Philadelphia (13) Game 1: Fred Barrow (34-4.7) (9-14) over Willis Kornfield (33-6.0) (0-2). Barrow allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored a run. C Andy Runnels (29-7.8) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Cleveland (3) at Philadelphia (9) Game 2: Gene Rankins (29-5.4) (7-5) over Ed Pedersen (24-5.1) (14-13). Rankins allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. Rookie CF Dale Ferrell (28-7.9) had had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Grand National Association:
Pittsburgh (6) at Baltimore (13): Tom Wilmarth (26-5.4) (12-19) over Whitey Mathews (23-4.1) (19-14). Wilmarth allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a triple, drew a walk and scored 3 runs. Rookie 3B Phil Lane (25-7.4) had 3 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. RF John Hagadorn (36-6.3) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

We sent SS Russell Gardner (32-6.4) and CF Pat Womack (25-6.3) to Syracuse and called up CF Tom Duncan (21-6.6) and SS Hubbard Hooker (28-5.3), who is no relation to Egyptian.

Cincinnati Reds (32-29 .525 11.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (44-18 .710 1st place)

We are 1-3 against Stevens on the season.

John Stevens, Cin. (29-8.2) (R 15-11 2.41 8.0-2.0-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Hank Anderson, Det. (33-7.7) (L 6-2 3.00 8.4-2.7-5.1)

Lost - 5 to 3

Anderson has now lost 3 in a row and has not looked too great doing it. If he makes it a 4th in a row, we will look for another option as our #3 pitcher. Sal DeVaux (31-3.5) is pitching very well at Syracuse and he is a groundball pitcher, which is important in our little park.

Anderson allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Stevens gave us 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 3 errors and Cincinnati made 2.

RF Joe Kraus (29-7.9) hurt his shoulder and will miss 6 to 7 weeks. So now we have our #1 pitcher, 2 starting outfielders and our starting shortstop all out with injuries and the only one due back anytime soon is CF Fred Bianco (27-6.9) in about a week. 3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) had 2 hits and a walk. He has now had a hit in 16 straight games. 1B Sam Cowan (30-5.1) hits a triple and scored 2 runs. 2B Jocko COle (24-6.1) had 2 hits and an RBI. CF Willie Kirby (24-2.1) hit a double.

For Cincinnati, C Spider Sullivan (25-6.7) hit a 3-run double and threw out both runners that tried to steal a base. He has the most impressive arm of any catcher I have seen. 3B Adam Trombley (32-6.8) hit his 4rd home run of the season, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. 2 of the home runs have been against Detroit, of course.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (8) at Philadelphia (4): Bill Henrichs (27-7.4) (6-4) over Ted Ryther (32-4.3) (9-17). Henrichs allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Ryther allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. C Deacon Dubin (29-8.8) had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs.

New York (2) at Rochester (7): John Simon (26-6.6) (4-0) over Ollie Kust (27-5.5) (0-1) in relief of Al Stone (26-3.1). Simon allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Curt is normally a catcher, but had to enter the game when Stone was injured. Stone will miss 2 to 3 months with a bad hamstring pull. 3B Bill Rush (37-3.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. For New York, they also lost LF Joe Olson (29-6.8) at least 6 weeks with a herniated disc in his back.

Boston (6) at Indianapolis (7): Joe Osborne (28-3.0) (4-8) over Freddy Wood (30-6.3) (7-7). C Fred Smith (31-6.8) had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. RF Martin Arnold (31-6.2) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. For Boston, rookie CF Sal Griffin (23-5.0), himself a replacement for an injured player, will need replacing now as he broke his leg and will be out for the rest of the season. RF Dan Abrams (27-5.1) came up with a bad blister and they say he will probably be out 2 weeks. That's either the worst blister of all time or he is a wussy.

With Boston playing less than stellar ball of late, things are looking pretty rosy for the Wolverines at the half-way point of the season with an 8.5 game lead. But if you can recall, we were looking pretty set in first place last year and ending in a dogfight at the end.

Grand National Association:
Kansas City (2) at Brooklyn (3): Al Green (23-3.8) (21-9) over Al McClaughry (22-5.6) (16-17). Brooklyn was down, 2 to 1, entering the bottom of the 9th. The first 2 batters were put out, but then LF Monte Moody (28-6.9) tripled, 2B Charlie Smith (28-5.6) doubled to tie the game and C Jim Granier (31-5.7) singled to win it. Green allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. McClaughry allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2.

Chicago (3) at Omaha (5): Tom Lee (28-6.0) (13-13) over Pete Rinehart (27-6.2) (20-11). Lee allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 9. Rinehart allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Rookie LF Fred Negus (22-6.7) had an off day with only 2 hits with a triple, a walk and a runs scored. 2B Ed Aldrich (22-6.8) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base and scored a run.

Providence (11) at Milwaukee (8): Tom Blomberg (28-4.7) (15-15) over Zachary Buchanan (25-4.0) (15-18). Blomberg allowed 7 hits (3 home runs), 5 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. In 8 innings, Buchanan allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. He has lost 4 in a row. Milwaukee made 9 errors and lost their 10th game in a row. 3B Sam Clark (35-4.7) had 2 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:

French, who was 10-4 at one point, has lost 4 in a row and 8 of his last 10. 1B Charlie Gregor (27-5.2) had 3 hits and a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. 2B Bill Loschiavo (28-5.8) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

The home-stand is over and today we embark on the road trip to end all road trips (unfortunately, that is not true). We will be sleeping in hotels for the next month and 4 days. We begin with a 3 game series against manager Paul Richards (45-5.4) and his Spiders today. We are 6-3 against them on the season so far and beat them 2 of 3 in Detroit last week. They are 2nd in the League in runs scored with 5.4 per game (Detroit is still #4 with 5.1). They are 8th and last in the League in runs allowed with 6.5 per game (Detroit is now #1 with 3.9). Cleveland's League Park is a tough place to hit home runs, but is otherwise very kind to the hitters.

I called back CF Pat Womack (25-6.3) from Syracuse.

Detroit Wolverines (44-19 .698 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cleveland Spiders (29-31 .483 13.5 GB in 5th place)

We made no errors and Cleveland made 10.

Hodges allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. 3B Ed Glass (27-4.5) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Manager/LF Ed Wakefield (26-5.8) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Boston has not won a series in July and this was their 5th.

Grand National Association:

These kids today, complaining about sleeping in hotels for an odd month.

Listen, young man! When I was your age, we slept in a tent, in the cold, bitter night, for FOUR YEARS. Unless Jeb Stuart's Rebs burned our baggage train, then we had no tent no more!

With the tent everything else was gone, even the vanity case with the good French shampoo.

So stop your crying about your cushions, and your being looked after, please!

We begin a 3 game series with manager/LF Silver Borresen (32-6.9) and his Reds today. We are 4-5 against Cincinnati so far this season and we took 2 of 3 from them last week in Detroit. They are currently 2nd in runs scored with 5.3 per game (Detroit is 4th with 5.2). They are 4th in runs allowed with 5.0 (Detroit is #1 with 3.8). Cincinnati's League Park is the 2nd easiest place to hit a home run in the League, behind Detroit, but is otherwise not so nice to hitters.

Detroit Wolverines (46-20 .697 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cincinnati Reds (36-29 .554 9.5 GB in 2nd place)

Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 21-3 2.10 6.1-2.4-5.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. Charlie Branham, Cin. (26-4.2) (R 4-2 2.61 7.4-2.6-3.4)

Detroit Wolverines (46-21 .687 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cincinnati Reds (37-29 .561 8.5 GB in 2nd place)

We are 1-4 against Stevens this season. If Bush gave up 3 home runs, I shudder to think how many they are going hit off McLeod.

William McLeod, Det. (27-5.6) (R 12-11 2.66 7.0-2.6-6.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. John Stevens, Cin. (29-8.2) (R 17-11 2.35 7.9-2.0-5.6)

I sent CF Tom Duncan (21-6.6) back to Syracuse as Fred Bianco (27-6.9) is ready to play.

Detroit Wolverines (47-21 .691 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Cincinnati Reds (37-30 .552 9.5 GB in 2nd place)

Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 21-4 2.27 6.2-2.3-5.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Lou Ellard, Cin. (28-6.3) (R 5-5 3.55 9.6-3.0-4.2)

Lost - 3 to 2 in 10 innings

I am on a train heading for New York as I write this and I am still in shock over this defeat. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and 2 strikes on the batter, CF Jimmy Wolf (25-5.1), we were 1 strike away from victory. But Wolf smashed one into the right field corner and managed to circle the bases before we could get the ball to the catcher and the game was suddenly tied on his inside-the-park home run. The next batter struck out, but we were still so stunned that he reached base. We finally managed to get the final out of the inning and head to the 10th.

We got a runner into scoring position with 2 outs, but 3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) struck out.

In the bottom of the 10th, the lead-off batter was the pitcher, Lou Ellard. He proceeded to take matters into his own hands and ended the game with a blast over the left-centerfield fence. All of our players stood motionless for at least a full minute as the crowd erupted into cheers.

Bush allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6.

Ellard gave us 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he broke my heart....

We made 2 errors and Cincinnati made 1.

2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) hit a triple. LF Ben Smith (27-6.7) had 2 and an RBI.

Liberty League:
Philadelphia (3) at Cleveland (6) Game 1: Ed Pedersen (24-5.1) (16-14) over Ted Ryther (32-4.3) (9-19). Pedersen allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Ryther allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rookie 2B Cowboy Gray (24-7.8) had 2 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Philadelphia (5) at Cleveland (2) Game 2: Gene Rankins (29-5.4) (8-6) over Bill Henrichs (27-7.4) (6-5). Rankins allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. He has won 8 of his last 9 starts. Henrichs allowed 14 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. C Hank Fowler (37-5.8) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:

Chicago (4) at Baltimore (5): Tom Wilmarth (26-5.4) (15-19) over Pony Stanley (23-6.2) (19-17). Wilmarth allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. He has won 7 decisions in a row. Stanley allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and a walk. Chicago has lost 6 in a row.

Pittsburgh (7) at Omaha (8) in 10 innings: Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (11-8) over Tom Adams (32-6.0) (3-8). A walk, an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch ended the game in the bottom of the 10th after 2 outs had been made. Adams has lost his last 7 starts. RF Hank Roberts (27-3.0) had 2 hits with a home run and 2 RBIs.

Kansas City (8) at Milwaukee (11): Wiley Steel (24-5.6) (5-6) over Lew Burnett (25-4.5) (10-11). Rookie 3B Dave Gray (25-4.9) had 2 hits and scored 3 runs. Kansas City made 9 errors.

We begin a 3 game series with manager/LF Hi Lynch (35-7.5) and his Gothams today. We are 5-4 against them so far on the season and swept them in 3 games in Detroit at the beginning of the month the last time we met. They are 7th in the League in runs scored with 4.5 per game (Detroit is 4th with 5.1). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 4.1 (Detroit is #1 with 3.9). The Polo Grounds is the toughest place to hit this year in the Liberty League, though you CAN hit them out to right with a good blast, but you can just forget about hitting them over the leftfield fence.

Detroit Wolverines (47-22 .681 1st place in the Liberty League) at
New York Gothams (34-32 .515 11.5 GB in 4th place)
