Trade Talks

The Philadelphia Firebirds need starting pitching. Chip Davidson’s apparent recovery leaves me with an extra starter. I decided to look over the Firebirds’ roster just in case we could strike a deal that would help both teams.

I still have that void in right field. Jackson, Jaramillo, and now Guzman have all failed to fill it effectively. The Firebirds have a 23-year-old outfielder named Eduardo Sanchez playing center field and hitting third. He is a rich man’s Ron Hartman. He has the same great contact and eye, with more raw speed and more power. He is exceptional in the outfield and his intangibles are good. Sanchez had a .308/.372/.464 stat line in 2006 with 29 steals in 33 attempts. So far this season, he is hitting .330 in 27 games, having missed three weeks with a minor knee injury. He is another year away from arbitration.

Philadelphia was willing to talk about Sanchez for Chip Davidson. They also want AAA outfield prospect Juan Cortez to replace Sanchez and enough cash to balance their budget. They might be interested in Aaron Wilkerson as a substitute for Davidson if I include more major league players and more cash in the deal. I don’t like that idea.

Davidson is easy to trade now because of his club-friendly contract and his age (24). He came back from his injury with his stamina knocked down a point and a fragile label attached to him. He is throwing as well as he ever did but I am wary of the risk. I have seen what happened to St. Louis with Octavio Lopez. Davidson might be the outstanding pitcher in our league or he might have a career-ending injury next month. He could lead us to the playoffs and then watch them from the training room as he did in 2004.

In the end, it is not about the pros and cons of Davidson. My lack of starting pitching depth keeps my finger off the “complete trade” button. I only have one starter (Ordonez) at AAA that could be called major-league caliber, and I am not sure the 20-year-old lefty is ready for a pennant race despite his 9-0 record. So I decided to keep Davidson for now and try Cortez in the outfield. After promotion, the revised BNN positional strength report says that he is the #6 right fielder in the CBA. It’s time we find out if they are right.

Moving on: I have a surplus of quality relievers, and I am working to find trades for some of them. My AAA bullpen is full to the brim and I lack depth at other positions. I don’t expect to find a superior major league player for a sack of relievers but I might be able to trade a package of young bullpen arms and position players for something useful.

Good stuff. The only thing better than this would be hearing it in person over a pint of Tetley's Cream Ale at Sal's Bar..bershop.

While Davidson has been very quality when healthy... we all know what Mr. Orcin thinks of that fragile label... plus, some of the fans have turned against him, I've heard the talk at the barbershop... of course, most of the talk is Noodle jokes from the Sal...

I know how much you value starting pitching, but with injuries already starting to affect his stamina, it shows that they are taking an effect. Might be best to cut ties while he can still fetch a very good player in a trade...

But, I guess this is why they pay you the big bucks...

Well, if that was a showcase start for the Noodle, it was a quality outing. If not, lets hope he keeps it up! It's also awesome that Westaway put in such a dominant performance. Shaping up nicely, and lots of chess moves available to you as well!

Subject: Louisville, Baltimore Agree to Swap

It has been in the rumor mill for several days, and today team officials for Louisville and Baltimore confirmed an agreement. The Colonels dealt five players to the Robins for 25-year-old first baseman Mike Guy. The key player going to Baltimore is 30-year-old right fielder Manuel Jaramillo. Baltimore will also receive 25-year-old minor league reliever Daniel Webber, 24-year-old minor league reliever Gang Jiao, 25-year-old minor league reliever Quincy White and 24-year-old minor league third baseman Ricardo Vázquez.

Thus far this year Jaramillo has struggled, hitting .135 with no home runs and no RBIs. Currently Guy is hitting .234 and has collected 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 26 times, while playing in 54 games. Louisville GM Otto Orcin said that Guy will report to the AAA Lexington Legends. Fan reaction to the trade was mixed.

**********

I am generally not a fan of 5-for-1 trades, but this trade accomplishes a few things:
• Cleared a logjam in the AAA bullpen and gained two spots on the 40-man roster.
• Saved $1.5 million in payroll over the rest of the season.
• Finally obtained a quality backup for first baseman Chris Brown.
• Gave the other team four players for their major league roster in return for one

Our glut of young relievers was very attractive to the rebuilding Baltimore Robins, owner of the worst bullpen in their league. Webber and White are 3-star prospects with good current ratings and Jiao is a 2-star prospect that seems to have a lot of interest among the AI teams. Webber will be their closer, Jiao is their setup man, and White will be a late-inning lefty. They immediately waived three older relievers.

The Robins were also interested in Manuel Jaramillo, who became expendable with the waiver claim of Pablo Guzman. I was happy to include his useless contract in the deal, along with career minor league infielder Ricardo Vasquez. I guess the Robins wanted a veteran bat for their bench and Jaramillo has a cheap expiring contract.

I have been searching for a first baseman with options to be the eventual replacement for Brown at the position while providing injury insurance for a couple of years at AAA. Mike Guy is a high-potential player, but he is blocking one of the top first base prospects in the CBA – Dustin Carroll. Guy is a left-handed hitter with a good eye, acceptable speed and defensive skills, and great intangibles. The 6’5”, 235-pound slugger has exceptional power, hitting 27 home runs in only 420 plate appearances last season.

OSA rates Guy even higher than Enriquez so I am confident that he has a high floor. I almost drafted Guy in 2003 (Round 1) but selected outfielder Jose Cruz instead, one of those bad evaluations that got Candelaria fired. The Robins took Guy with the next pick.

Mid-Season Focus Changes

Teams that may be buyers at the trade deadline:
• Charlotte Knights have set their team focus to “Win Now”.
• Washington Admirals have set their team focus to “Win Now”.
• San Diego Stallions have set their team focus to “Win Now”.
• Cleveland Rockers have set their team focus from “Rebuilding” to “Neutral”.
• Providence Grays have set their team focus from “Rebuilding” to “Neutral”.
• Indianapolis Indians have set their team focus from “Rebuilding” to “Neutral”.
• Houston Stars have set their team focus from “Rebuilding” to “Neutral”.

Teams that may be sellers at the trade deadline:
• Boston Bombers have set their team focus to “Rebuilding”.
• Baltimore Robins have set their team focus to “Rebuilding”.
• Phoenix Coyotes have set their team focus to “Rebuilding”.
• Milwaukee Eagles have set their team focus from “Win Now” to “Neutral”.
• Atlanta Flames have set their team focus from “Win Now” to “Neutral”.

The “buyers” list will be studied carefully for Patriot League teams that might need a veteran closer. George King has increased his demand for an extension to 4 years at $5M/year. That is still a bargain for a quality closer but I have younger, cheaper, and perhaps even better options. He likely won’t be compensation-eligible as a free agent so any compensation that I will receive must come in the form of a trade before July 31.

If King is traded, Brooks will assume the closer role with Nathaniel Jones becoming the primary setup man. Quinones will be the third short option, with Garza and Trejo taking the sixth and seventh innings. Davies and Wilkerson will be the long men. I think that bullpen is good enough to make King expendable if I can get a good prospect or right field upgrade in return.

• 06/07: LOU 5, SF 3 – Gonzalez 1-3, DBL, 2 RBI, GWRBI
• Dallas traded young backup CF Charlie McAndrew to Cleveland for veteran SP Will Case (3-6, 3.55 ERA).

• The slumping Chicago Cougars (27-37, L9 of 10) have fired legendary manager Greg McDonald (career record of 1864-1928 in 26 seasons as a CBA manager).
• This week: 4 at Phoenix, 3 at Denver

I called Philadelphia GM John Evans this week to continue the discussion about a trade for outfielder Eduardo Sanchez. Evans still wants Chip Davidson, Juan Cortez, and cash. It’s a steep price but Sanchez is the #4 center fielder in BNN rankings with a stat line of .350/.431/.503 in 200 plate appearances this year. Cortez has more power but Sanchez blows him away in the other four tools, especially speed and defense. There is no question that Sanchez is better than Cortez. The sticking point is Davidson. I hate to give him up. (It must be a fair trade if it bothers me this much.) Evans is holding out for Davidson, so I will have to fish or cut bait as Sal would say.

We are hoping to win a third World Series and establish that dynasty. Westaway and Brown were extended to keep this core together. The window is not closing rapidly but there is a bit of time pressure to do it now while Westaway, Bland, Morgan, Brown, and Simon are still in their prime. I have enough pitching to survive the loss of Davidson. In fact, I have done it all year. The injury to Hartman left a hole in the lineup, and filling it is a pressing need. I won’t do anything before the draft but a decision must be made soon.

Subject: First-Year Player Draft

We have pick #29 in the first round. I had several starting pitchers and infielders on my pre-draft shortlist. I ended up taking best player available as usual, although I did snag one of the better infielders in round 3.

The Salt Lake City Bees had the first overall pick in today’s draft, and selected 5-star SP Alejandro Rosario, an 18-year-old high school player from Northglenn, CO. There are questions about his stuff, but he has great movement and control.

Other consensus top picks in round 1:
• Houston Stars (#3 overall): SP Gordon Dougherty (age 21, throws R, 4.5-star), dominant hurler written all over him, four strong pitches and great stamina.
• St. Louis Hawks (#7 overall): SS Jason Searles (age 21, bats R, 5-star), could win a few awards before it’s all over, contact/speed/defense all rated 10/10
• Detroit Titans (#9 overall): SP Glen Hutchinson (age 17, throws R, 2.5-star), should be a back-of-the-rotation starter, fragile, smart with a great work ethic
• Chicago Cougars (#11 overall): 2B Steve Griffith (age 21, bats R, 4.5-star), impact potential with the bat, work ethic is a concern, good speed, average defense
• Nashville Tigers (#15 overall): 2B Ron Reynolds (age 22, bats R, 5-star), impact tools, teammates find him arrogant and condescending, too smart for his own good
• Charlotte Knights (#17 overall): RF Nolan Davis (age 20, bats R, 5-star), undisputed premium talent, has all the tools, work ethic is a small concern

Louisville selections:

Round 1 (#29 overall): RF Tom Frye (age 21, bats R, 5-star), hometown hero from the University of Louisville, five-tool player with a high floor, could be a star, above-average contact, plus power, very patient, plus defender and runner, good guy in the clubhouse, rarely makes waves, durable, rated extremely hard to sign – wants slot

Round 2 (#65 overall): C Kevin Thomas (age 22, bats S, 5-star), North Carolina, looks to have a long career ahead, solid contact, tremendous power, very patient, strong defensive catcher, very hard worker, durable, rated hard to sign – wants slot

Round 3 (#99 overall): SS Bernardo Casas (age 21, bats R, 5-star), Cerritos College, sky-high ceiling, contact hitter with great speed and eye, exceptional defense at short and second, great intangibles, rated hard to sign – wants slot

Round 4 (#129 overall): LF Kelvin Daniel (age 21, bats L, 5-star), University of Utah, true impact potential, amazing talent with all-star power potential, very patient, catches everything hit his way, good arm, excellent speed, leader with good work ethic, rated extremely hard to sign – wants slot

Round 5 (#163 overall): SP Carlos Garcia (age 17, throws R, 4.5-star), Mexico, could be an elite bullpen prospect or a starter depending upon development, great curveball and changeup but fastball lacks major league velocity, has the size at 6’4”, 220 lbs. to throw harder with better mechanics, leader with good intelligence and great work ethic so very coachable, durable, rated hard to sign – wants slot

**********

The good pitchers went early so I primarily concentrated on college position players with good stats, high ratings from my scout, and great character. This should be a low-risk, high-reward draft that will give my organization a big boost at the mid-levels.

Interesting

I notice you picked 29th, and then 65th and later, you picked later. Trading picks in later rounds? I love how much value the game places on draft choices, early ones anyway.

No, I have draft pick trading turned off. In the first round, it was due to teams signing compensation-eligible free agents. In the later rounds, it was due to teams getting picks as compensation for failing to sign picks in the prior year.

• This week: 3 vs. San Diego, 3 at Washington

Houston Stars rookie SP John Brennan is described as “an everyday guy who likes a good game of poker”. His intelligence grades as “low” but he is a hard worker. He finally made it to the show after four years toiling in the minors and picked up the win in his first major league start. Unfortunately, his passion for cards caught up with him the next day. Brennan broke his hand fighting over a poker game, and he is out for the season.

That deserves punishment from the GM...

I've been waiting for that trade to happen since the season started, basically. I would not make that trade, personally, but that's why my teams always finish bottom of their division, so maybe he is right with it after all.

Has Mr. Orcin made one bad trade - ever?

More typos than bad trades, to be sure.

But now that you mention it, Fletcher for Luna is not looking as smart as I originally thought, although I did save some salary. (I should add, since you can't see what I see, that Fletcher is on a roll lately and has won 4 straight games in June.)

Subject: Mid-Season Minor League Update

The following players from our farm system were selected for the All-Star team in their league.

Lexington (AAA), 54-12, 1st place:
• SP Edgardo Ordonez (age 22, throws L, 11-0, 2.03)
• CL Jorge Merced (age 22, throws R, 3-3, 24 SV, 2.35 ERA)
• C Bill Landreth (age 27, bats L, .284/.420/.490, 9 HR, 36 RBI)

Dayton (AA), 35-30, 3rd place:
• C Herman Dodson (age 24, bats R, .319/.414/.465, 6 HR, 35 RBI)
• SS Cipriano Viera (age 22, bats S, .260/.373/.525, 13 HR, 48 RBI)
• LF Lucio Borges (age 26, bats L, .284/.385/.586, 13 HR, 36 RBI)
• RF Don Green (age 21, bats L, .333/.422/.417, 3HR, 31 RBI, 7 SB)

Evansville (A), 37-28, 4th place:
• SP Donald Johnson (age 24, throws R, 9-3, 2.40 ERA)
• SP Rick Morrison (age 24, throws L, 7-2, 2.27 ERA)
• SP Juan Jose Rodgers (age 19, throws R, 3-5, 2.30 ERA)
• 1B Kyu-min Park (age 22, bats R, .284/.405/.485, 8 HR, 25 RBI)
• SS Wilson Hernandez (age 21, bats S, .320/.371/.488, 5 HR, 28 RBI, 8 SB)
• LF Dennis Brown (age 22, bats R, .318/.377/.537, 12 HR, 43 RBI)

This is a much better showing compared to the early years of the decade. The extra money poured into our farm system over the past few seasons is finally paying off.

All of our 2007 draft picks were signed to reasonable bonus offers (at or near slot) and have reported to their teams. The college players taken in the first four rounds were assigned to Evansville (A) and the rest will play for rookie league Owensboro. It is great to have them all in action quickly.

I love the micro managing aspects of this sim as much as anything, and hate that I feel like I am missing things. I just recently even found where this info is, much less paid attention. How do you keep abreast of other franchises and their 'attitudes' outside of find the page that lists their current mood, or their finance page. I still can't find the page listing their attitudes easily.

The best place to see all of teams at once is the Financial Report under League Reports. When you scroll past the first few charts, there is a box for each team showing the key data.

I noted the changes by watching the league's News Log. When a team changes its focus, it gets listed there along with the single game feats and PotW/M awards. Most of the changes during the season seem to occur between May 15 and July 1. I am not sure when the off-season changes happen; I need to watch for that next time.

How do you get their changes to appear in the news? I've always had news issues and filtering, but I've never been or had a setting that showed me teams changing their 'stances'
