Yeah, it's amazing how many great players debuted in those few years. And in the handful of Negro Leaguers who come in with this draft class, Cool Papa Bell leads the way. So this class will be loaded with first-round talent.

The Oklahoma City Scorpions are on the clock

Most of those guys were the superstars during my old '58 and Beyond dynasty so I'll be looking forward to seeing how they go in this one.

That's one hell of a draft list, the overall quality of the league is going to get a huge lift from this draft list.

Yeah, even the second tier is good...Dick Groat, Jim Gilliam, Stu Miller, Roy Face, Gus Bell, Jimmy Piersall and Gil McDougald and Billy Martin to name a few.

Oklahoma City was bad in pretty much all areas...it would be real hard for them to screw this up, one would think.

Engines' O'Rouke Retires
Powerful slugger calls it a career at 38

INDIANAPOLIS -- In the end, John O'Rourke decided he had no more to give.

"I could stick around," O'Rourke said at a brief press conference today. "But in the end, I've had a good run, a good career. It's time."

O'Rourke retires as the No. 4 home run hitter in Pastime Baseball League history with 247, behind only Dan Brouthers, Sam Thompson and Charley Jones. Those three are 31, 33 and 34, respectively. O'Rourke was 29 when the PBL formed in 2009.

The powerful lefty hit 47 homers in that inaugural season, batting .320 with 112 RBIs. While he would never approach that average again and his patience at the plate declined after that first season, he remained a top run producer. He hit more than 20 homers in each of his first 7 seasons, hitting 40 in 2012 and 42 in 2013.

Jones led the PBL in homers in 2012, but didn't win a league home run title, having been traded from Philadelphia to New Orleans in mid-season, hitting 20 shots for each. He then did similar in 2013, hitting 21 each for New Orleans and Louisville.

The three-time All-Star signed a two-year deal as a free agent with the Milwaukee Bangers before the 2015 season. But after playing only 18 games for Milwaukee, O'Rourke missed the rest of the season after tearing his labrum.

He went .218-21-73 for Milwaukee in 2016 and became a free agent again, this time signing a minor league deal with Indianapolis. He was active for one game.

Pants Rowland, who managed O'Rourke with Philadelphia for three years, praised him.

"This guy was a force, a terror at the plate," Rowland said. "Great teammate, great guy to manage. He was one of the most feared hitters in this league. When they get the PBL's Hall of Fame up and running, this guy should get a call."

Managerial Openings
Changes made in Boston, Memphis, Los Angeles

It's a tough job, and when the results are lacking, changes happen. But that doesn't make them right.

A year after guiding the Los Angeles Idols to a PBL Championship and consecutive postseason comebacks from 3-1 series deficits, Charlie Manuel is out as skipper of the Idols.

After a pair of sub-.500 seasons his first two years at the helm, the Idols won the PBL Championship in 2016, and won 96 games this season, held off by eventual Southern League champion Arizona.

"I think 96 wins is a fine year," Manuel said. "I guess my honeymoon was over."

The Boston Riders fired Sparky Anderson, who landed on his feet, signing on to take over the helm with the Oklahoma City Scorpions - where he will benefit from the #1 pick in the draft. That job was opened when Pat Moran was relieved of duty, only to later sign on to lead Memphis.

That came about when Buck Showalter was let go in Memphis. He'll serve as bench coach in Indianapolis under their new skipper, Whitey Herzog, who was fired by Memphis in August. Herzog led the Wichita Brigade for 7 years, and led them to three first place finishes, including the inaugural title in PBL history.

Oklahoma City puts it on the Mantle
Native centerfielder taken by Stingers with top pick

OKLAHOMA CITY -- They weighed the decision carefully, we've been told. But in the end, the youngster from Commerce High School was the choice not because of his place of birth, but his hopeful place in history.

Boasting of-the-charts potential, Mickey Mantle was the first choice taken in today's PBL Amateur Draft. The fleet and powerful switch-hitting centerfielder seems the total package, in a draft that has two that fit the bill.

Willie Mays was tops on many draft lists, and would ultimately be taken second by the Indianapolis Engines. But Oklahoma City general manager Albert Vroonland said Mantle's switch-hitting ability gave him that extra bump.

"We expect Mickey to be a fixture in centerfield right off the bat, and for the next decade," Vroonland said. "Mays has a defensive edge on him, but Mantle's good enough there, and matches him everywhere else. The ability to bat him from both sides of the plate really helps our lineup."

"I'm thrilled," Mantle said as he donned the blue and black cap and jersey. "You never expect to go number one. But then I heard the talk, and knowing Oklahoma City was picking first, I started to let myself believe it. Now I just need to produce."

Being taken #1 is a tremendous honor. But being taken #1 in arguably the deepest Amateur Draft in PBL history will hold special significance - and special scrutiny.

There will no flying under the radar for Mantle. The small market is offset by his Oklahoma roots, and every move will be watched as the Scorpions - the only of the four expansion teams added in 2013 who has yet to contend - pin their hopes on him. That may be unfair. But it's reality, particularly for a franchise whose offense, or lack thereof, has been their demise.

The pressure may be too much too soon, though. Mantle's potential is through the roof by all accounts. But he might not be quite ready to handle a starting role right off the bat.

"I'll go to spring training, do my best, and take it from there," Mantle said. "I can't think about it. I just have to play."

I'm really interested to see how Mantle's career win pan out compared to Mays, especially if both players manage to avoid injury problems. Talent wise, they must be the top 2 prospects in PBL History.

Well, remember, Ruth is in the league already. But yeah, they still may very well be.

It's funny, but what jumped out at me most is how Las Vegas, 9 years without a winning season, picks Bob Friend with it's first round pick. Solid pitcher, but with Ernie Banks, Al Kaline and Whitey Ford still out there...I guess there's a reason they are the worst franchise in PBL history. But somehow, they actually had their best attendance season last year and continue to make a good profit.

Some big offseason moves are going to make things interesting in this upcoming 10th season of the PBL. I can't believe it's a decade old.

I'd thought of Ruth, but Mays and Mantle could do so much more defensively and speed wise, that I felt that they were better all around prospects. Of course, the stats will tell the story. Any plans on an all decade team?

Funny you mention that. I was thinking about that before and probably will. After this season I also plan on pausing for a bit to update the Almanac thread I started here but haven't updated.

Yeah, but you guys have had something to cheer about this year. I'm just hoping my team doesn't botch its GM and manager selections.

New banners courtesy of Davewms...since I no longer do Weekly format. Going to do PBL Report, which will be the usual events covered. PBL Update will be breaking news type things like trades and injuries.

May not matter to most, just wanted to give him credit for doing these for me.

Louisville ships Richards to Las Vegas

It's being reported in the Louisville press that the Racers have traded 30-year-old right fielder Gene Richards to the Las Vegas Bosses for 26-year-old reliever Randy Jones.

Lifetime Richards is hitting .307 with 1057 hits, 198 doubles, 30 triples and 29 home runs. He has scored 525 runs and driven in 375.

So far in his career, Jones has registered no saves and fashioned a 7-7 won-lost mark. In 19 games he has fanned 33 batters in 116.2 innings and logged a 4.09 ERA.

The deal is a surprising one from Louisville's standpoint. While the new champions have a surplus of outfielders (Joe Jackson, Richie Ashburn, Jerry Mumphrey, Jim Rice), the belief is that Richards could have netted more than a well-regarded but hardly stalwart reliever.

Jones could fight for a rotation spot while Mickey Lolich recovers from shoulder surgery for the first month to 6 weeks of the season. But Richards, the 2016 Northern League batting champion, may have been sold low here.

Sandmen lock up Verlander

A throng of media gathered as Justin Verlander announced that he had come to terms with the Arizona Sandmen and that he would be sticking around town another 4 years. Verlander is set to draw $22,220,000 in pay over that time.

In his career, Verlander has chalked up 103 wins and 76 losses and compiled a 3.72 ERA.

The 32-year-old righthander rebounded from a down 2016 season to go 16-8 with a 3.20 ERA in leading the Arizona to the Southern League pennant.
