Orioles Start AL Playoffs Flying High

Baltimore--For the first two batters of Tuesday's opening game of the American League playoffs, Texas had Tom Seaver on the ropes. By game's end, the Rangers held the short end of the string.

Dave Nelson led off the game with a triple for Texas. He scored when No. 2 hitter Toby Harrah doubled him in. Then Seaver settled down and retired the heart of the Ranger batting order.

The Orioles answered back in bottom of the inning with four runs of their own. Like Nelson, Baltimore leadoff man Billy North tripled to start things off. However, the big blow of the inning was delivered by first baseman Steve Garvey, who clubbed a three-run homer off Texas starter Luis Tiant.

From there, Baltimore added three more runs in the third and two more in the sixth. North, who collected three hits, swatted a solo home run in the eighth. Thus, Baltimore toppled Texas 10-3.

Garvey, optained in the off-season from Los Angeles, finished the day with two hits and five RBIs. Designated hitter Johnny Grubb went 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

Nelson and Harrah each had three hits for Texas. Harrah hit an eighth inning home run off Seaver.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. Burt Hooton starts for Texas; Jon Matlack takes the hill for Baltimore.

Pirates Clobber Astros to Take Game One of NCLS

Houston--Milt May may not be the first catcher one thinks of when naming the stars of the Joy in Mudville. However, in Tuesday's National League playoffs opener, no one came up bigger.

May banged out three hits and hit a two-run homer as Pittsburgh clobbered Houston 10-3 in game one of the NL playoffs.

Holding a 1-0 lead, the Pirates broke the game open in the fourth inning on home runs by Richie Hebner and May.

The Pirates put the game away with a five-run seventh. Pittsburgh pitcher Dock Ellis got into the act, collecting two hits and scoring two runs in the game. In the eighth inning, Ellis tripled off Astro reliever Ray Corbin.

Meanwhile, the Pirate right-hander held Houston in check. Ellis scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out four as Pittsburgh grabbed a 1-0 playoff series lead.

Pirate left fielder Bill Buckner rapped out four hits in five at-bats. Buckner scored a run and drove home one as well.

Pittsburgh and Houston play game two Wednesday night. The Pirates will start right-hander Bob Moose. The Astros will send righty Don Wilson to the mound.

Six-Run Eighth Does in Rangers; Orioles Grab 2-0 ALCS Advantage

Baltimore--After the Texas Rangers scored a run in top of the eighth to pull within a run, the Baltimore Orioles outdid them in the bottom half.

The Orioles sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs to ice game two of the American League playoffs. The 9-2 victory leaves Baltimore just one win from its third Joy in Mudville World Series appearance.

Staked to a 3-0 lead, Oriole starter Jon Matlack held Texas in check until the Ranger half of the fifth. Texas leadoff man Dave Nelson doubled home catcher Darrell Porter. However, Hal McRae was gunned down at the plate on a relay from Baltimore short stop Chris Speier.

The Rangers scored their run in the eighth on a Willie Crawford double with one out. But, Matlack retired Graig Nettles and Rusty Staub to end the threat.

Baltimore then battered Texas starter Burt Hooton. Johnny Grubb delivered a pair of hits in the inning, and Speier produced a two-run double.

Following a day of travel, the Orioles seek to end the playoff series with a win in Texas Friday night. The Rangers are expected to start right-hander Andy Messersmith. Texas native Nolan Ryan will pitch for Baltimore.

Moose Pitches Pirates to 2-0 NLCS Lead

Houston--You don't have to convince the Houston Astros that Bob Moose is a Cy Young Award candidate.

Moose, a 28-game winner during the regular season, pitched 7.1 innings without yielding an earned run. With a little help from reliever Dave Giusti, Moose and the Pittsburgh Pirates captured a 3-1 victory Wednesday night.

Up two games to none, the Pirates will bid for their second Joy in Mudville World Series berth Friday when they host Houston at Three Rivers Stadium.

Pittsburgh scored all its runs off Houston starter Don Wilson in the third inning. Dave Cash led off with a bunt single. He moved to second when Bill Buckner beat out a slow roller to short.

Wilson appeared to be on the verge of getting out of the inning when Willie Stargell rolled into a double play. Yet, a single by NL batting champion Al Oliver and a double by first baseman Matty Alou plated the three Pittsburgh runs.

Houston scored its run in the eighth when Pirate short stop Fred Patek committed a throwing error. Giusti, however, got Cesar Cedeno to end the inning on a double-play grounder to third.

One inning later, Giusti ended the game when Astro catcher Steve Yeager bounced into a double play started by Patek.

Pirate catcher Milt May got three more hits Wednesday, raising his playoff average to an incredible .857.

Game three will match left-hander Luke Walker for Pittsburgh and right-hander Larry Dierker for Houston.
