Columbus signed P Tim Hill (27-L), formerly of Ottawa, to an escalating 7 year contract that tops out at $248,000 in the 4th season and averages $236,000 per season. The final year is a player option. He was 23-3 with a 2.20 ERA this season in 34 starts, but missed the Millennial Cup with a partially torn labrum. He won the Hurler Trophy this season and is a 3-time All-Star (2002-03,05). He won the Gold Glove this year, too.

The B Leagues Draft!

The final B Leagues Draft..... Sad...

And it is not a good one. The only starting pitcher I like, Mike Rossini, is injury prone. The good hitters cannot play defense and the good defenders cannot hit.... The player I settled on as our first round pick, thinking he would be available, went 3rd overall. The player we did take was not the one I thought was the best, but the one I thought was the best was named Bill Jones and that was just to boring for me....

By the way, our new Scouting Director was no help in the draft because he had not scouted any of the players...

Rochester signed P Terry Luckett (31-L), formerly of Columbus, to a 6 year escalating contract that tops out at $365,000 in the 4th season and then pays him $320,000 for each of the final two seasons with the last year having a vested option of 180 IP. The average yearly salary is $306,833. He was 11-14 with a 3.42 ERA in 35 starts this season and 22-6 with a 1.99 ERA last year.

Indianapolis signed P Juan Ledesma (34-R), formerly of Ottawa, to a 4 year front-loaded contract that averages $244,000 per season. The final year has a vested option of 25 GS. He was 18-11 with a 2.49 ERA in 34 starts this year and his worst season ERA to date is 2.96. He is tied for 4th on the all-time wins list with 77 and is a 3-time All-Star.

Syracuse signed P Juan Estrada (32-L), formerly of Birmingham, to a 6 year contract at $172,000 per season with the final year having a vested option of 180 IP. He was 14-11 with a 2.61 ERA in 35 starts for the Barons this year and made the All-Star team for the first time.

Good News! Our owner's accountant called me and told me that they had found another $100,000 to add to our budget! We need it!

Also, the agent for SS Brian Bowden (28-R), formerly of Rochester, called me up and said they were willing to reopen contract talks with us. He was asking for an 8 year contract worth close to $200,000 per season. I made them a very lowball offer and they laughed at me, but it was all we could afford, so I did not pursue it further. So now, I lowered my lowball offer and they are considering it! He is a great glove man, who can hit singles and steal bases and that is the extent of his skill set. But he does not ground into a ton of double plays.

Columbus re-signed 1B Gabriel Beltran (35-S) to 3 year contract at $170,000 per season with the final year having a vested option of 135 G. He hit .305/.399/.450 in 456 AB with 14 HR and 81 RBI this season, leading the MLB in OBP. He was the 2002 MVP and a 2-time Silver Slugger (2002-03) and 3-time All-Star (2002-04).

Rochester signed C Marc Barksdale (35-R), formerly of Columbus, to a 1 year contract for $156,000. He hit .190/.278/.295 in 336 AB with 8 HR and 34 RBI with 0 SB this year. We was an All-Star in 2004 and has won 3 Gold Gloves (2001-02,04).

Editor's Note: I just got a brand new gaming keyboard for my PC! We'll see if it ups my OOTP game! And it is the start of the preseason and time to set up the new farm systems and have a draft of all the remaining B League players. From here on out, the new roster rules (waivers, etc.) will be in effect. Each team will have 6 farm teams (AAA, AA, High A, Lowe A, Short A and Rookie).

Editor's Note: We could not have a draft of the remaining B League Players without a prohibitive amount of work, because, for some reason, the MLB free agents are included in the free agent draft of the B Leagues. It has been reported as a bug to the authorities. So, instead, we have had to draft whole teams. The MLB teams with the worst records selected the Dixie Association teams with the best records. Which means the Jays got all the players of the El Paso Sun Kings, who had the 2nd worst record in the B Leagues. All of the players who were 17 or younger in the Complexes of the B Leagues were retired and the rest were promoted.

Also, after doing some math, I decided to bump everyone's revenue and budget by $250,000. This puts the average budget just a hair over $2 million. Ours is now $2.15 million, 5th highest in the MLB.

Morgan is a slacker with long ball potential that we picked up in the dissolution of the B Leagues.

Hendricks is injury prone, but cheap and a very good defender, though not much of a hitter.

I just like to get rid of the slackers, whenever I can, and we picked up quite a few from the old El Paso roster.

We signed SS Brian Bowden (28-R), formerly of Rochester, to a 5 year escalating contract that will pay him $70,000 this season, $100,000 next season, $110,000 in 2008 and $120,000 in 2009 and 2010, with 2010 being a player option. The average per season is $104,000. He won a Gold Glove in 2002 at short and one in 2004 at 2nd. He's a hard worker and is a spark plug.

Also, we signed our first international discovery: 16 year old SP Eddie Mestas, a lefty, who even Brian Yoder, who discovered him, says does not have any chance to make the MLB....

New Orleans signed SS Dave Behm (29-R), formerly of Ottawa, to a 7 year escalating contract that tops out at $282,000 in the 4th season and averages $255,143 per year. The final year is a player option. Which is silly, because, he has no chance to get an offer better than $282,000 at age 36. He hit .284/.365/.440 in 539 AB with 16 HR and 80 RBI and 6 SB this past season, by far his best to date. In 2003, he had a .595 OPS. He was an All-Star this past season for the first time.

He hit .235/.344/.451 in 497 AB with 31 HR and 83 RBI and 4 SB, this past season, his worst season ever in every category except OBP. He is the MLB career leader in HR with 186, 2 ahead of Sergio Acevedo. He is 2nd all-time in RBI with 511 in 5 seasons. Nestor Gonzalez, who is still unsigned, has 532. Lynn is a 3-time Silver Slugger and 2-time All-Star.

He is the all-time MLB leader in RBI with 532 in 5 seasons. 2005 was the first season that he failed to reach 100 RBI. He is a 2-time Silver Slugger and 3 time All-Star.

We opened the Grapefruit League schedule with a 7 to 6 win over the Columbus Explorers at our training complex in Daytona Beach. We were up, 6 to 1, but 3 runs allowed by Robbie Hopley in the 8th and 2 runs allowed by Bill Grant in the 9th tied the game up. Greg Walker (23-S), a great young hitter we got in the B Leagues dissolution, who cannot play defense at all, led off the bottom of the 9th with a walk, went to 3rd on single by Dickie Stemen and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ray Keene (26-L), our 4th round pick in the 2004 B Leagues Draft.

Jim Baucom gave up 1 run on 2 hits, no walks and 5 strikeouts in 4 innings. New shortstop Brian Bowden hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had an RBI.

Let's hope for no injuries!

He hit .257/.324/.453 in 311 AB with 12 HR and 51 RBI and 1 SB last season for the Bombers. He was a Silver Slugger in 2002 when hit hit 42 HR and is a 3-time All-Star.
