Be sure to book the big ball room in Detroit for October's festive celebrations, which are undoubtedly going to take place. Give or take a shaky pitcher.

When I signed Lou Townley, I though it was in the bag, for sure. But now, every pitcher on the team has at least a flyball tendency and Detroit's park is extremely easy to hit them out of.

And other than LF Ben Smith, we do not have anyone who can take full advantage of the fences on offense. We have been out-homered at home 12 to 9.

And Boston has 7 of their 8 starters batting over .300, and that does not count Bill Gordon, who is batting .449 and is on the DL.

The Red Caps get P Joe Peters back in 3 days and Gordon back in a week.

I'll be rooting for the Wolverines, but my money is on the Red Caps.

One other point: My re-rating of all the fielders has really helped the AI because, on a scale of 1-10, there are no more 2's that it can start at short or center or anywhere really except first and left and maybe catcher. I still have the best defense in the League, but no team has a really horrible one anymore like seasons past.

Here is graphic that shows that the AI's defenses have become relatively better compared to mine. The numbers are the Overall Defensive Rating for the starters at each position. 1886 shows current starters and 1876 shows the player that started the most.

And I think the numbers would be even more dramatic if we counted all the backups who got playing time at a position with a rating of 1, 2 or 3. Those players just do not exist anymore and so the backups are therefore of a much higher quality, defensively.

In other words, my main advantage over the AI is not as pronounced under the new defensive scheme as under the default OOTP setup.

P.S. Sorry for the dissertation in response to a simple comment, but it takes a lot of bad-mouthing to un-jinx my club from your comment!....

Before the games today, Cincinnati added 2-time MVP OF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9) to their roster. Having missed a third of the season, it seems his string of 3 home run titles and 4 RBI titles in a row are in jeopardy.

Philadelphia Keystones (14-26 .350 14.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (29-12 .707 1st place)

Fred Barrow, Phil. (34-4.7) (R 6-9 5.39 12.5-3.3-3.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. William McLeod, Det. (27-5.6) (R 6-8 3.18 7.3-3.1-6.7)

Won - 4 to 1

McLeod allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7.

Barrow gave us 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

We made 1 error and Philadelphia made 2.

LF Ben Smith (27-6.7), on his birthday, had 3 hits with a triple and his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:

Cincinnati (8) at Cleveland (11): Harry Lamb (31-6.4) (8-8) over Bert Fischer (25-5.6) (7-6). The Reds lost their 6th game in a row. 3B Hunkey Morton (25-6.9) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. LF Tom Laarman (25-7.8) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. For the Reds, RF Fleet Wilcox, in his season debut, had 3 hits and scored a run.

Grand National Association:

Providence (6) at Pittsburgh (3): Ed Wison (25-7.3) (14-9) over Tom Lilly (26-6.4) (12-9). Wison allowed 6 hits, 5 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Lilly allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI. Rookie CF Al Young (22-4.8) hit 2 doubles and drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Brooklyn (1) at Omaha (4): Lee Sprague (26-3.5) (4-3) over Al Green (23-3.8) (16-6). Sprague allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 10. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. He was won 4 in a row. Green allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 6. That's a tough outing to end up a loser. He gave up more runs than base-runners! Brooklyn made 7 errors to 1 for Omaha.

Baltimore (9) at Milwaukee (1): Tom Wilmarth (26-5.4) (7-15) over Zachary Buchanan (25-4.0) (12-12). Wilmarth allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit. Buchanan, who I tried hard to sign for Detroit, lost his 4th in a row. LF Clarence Reis (35-5.0) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. RF Val Cornell (28-3.5) hit 2 triples, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Billy Moore (30-7.0) hit a double and a home run, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs.

Chicago (10) at Kansas City (4): Pat Seguin (22-4.4) (3-3) over Dan Butler (29-4.7) (6-15). Seguin allowed 13 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. SS Freddy Parsley (26-7.5) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (38-4.1) and his big, bad Red Caps come into town for a 3 game series starting today. We are 5-1 against them so far this season and swept them in 3 games at Boston two weeks ago. They are 1st in the League in runs scored with 7.3 per game (Detroit is down to 5th with 5.0). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 3.9 per game (Detroit is still #2 with 3.7). Thankfully, Bill Gordon (29-3.7), who hit 3 home runs the last time the Red Caps came to town, will sit this series out.

I sent C Adam White (26-6.3) back to Syracuse and recalled C Jimmy Babcock (29-6.9).

Boston Red Caps (27-14 .659 2.5 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (30-12 .714 1st place)

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (36-6.7) (R 9-8 2.09 8.0-1.6-6.2 H-BB-K/9) vs. Ed Bush, Det. (26-5.3) (R 12-2 2.14 5.5-2.7-5.6)

Won - 4 to 3 in 10 innings

In the bottom of the 10th, SS Sam Swanger (33-4.8) walked and stole 2nd base. With 2 outs, RF Joe Kraus (29-7.9) singled to win the game. It was the 3rd extra-inning win in the 4 games of this current home-stand. We began the season by losing our first 3 extra-inning games, but have since won 5 in a row.

Bush allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5.

Morlock gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

Each team made 2 errors.

3B Sam Boullion (26-4.8) hit a double and a triple and scored 2 runs. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run.

For Boston, LF Charlie Warner (32-9.2) hit a home run, his 3rd of the season and 2nd against us.

Liberty League:
New York (1) at Cleveland (2): Ed Pedersen (24-5.1) (10-8) over Miah Turner (25-5.3) (7-12). Pedersen allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. He is 8-2 in his last 10 starts. Turner allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. Who else but Turner could have lost this game? He has now lost 6 in a row and has not allowed more than 7 hits in any of the games and has only walked 4 total during the losing streak. 3B Hunkey Morton (25-6.9) had 2 hits with a double and knocked in both of the Spider runs.

Rochester (5) at Cincinnati (2): Ed Hodges (26-3.2) (6-10) over John Stevens (29-8.2) (11-8). The Reds' losing streak reaches 7 games. Hodges allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Stevens allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. C Jim Martin (24-5.0) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run and threw out both runners that tried to steal a base. The Reds scored their 2 runs on 1B Joe Vaughan's (31-5.2) 4th home run of the year.

Indianapolis (2) at Philadelphia (6) Game 1: Ted Ryther (32-4.3) (6-12) over Dad Marshall (27-4.4) (9-9). Ryther allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. Marshall allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. SS Fred Vay (34-6.0) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI.

Indianapolis (2) at Philadelphia (4) Game 2: Gene Rankins (29-5.4) (3-4) over Levi Giddens (34-4.8) (2-10). Rankins allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. He has won his last 3 starts. Baltimore (7) at Milwaukee (8): Wiley Steel (24-5.6) (4-5) over Sammy O'Quinn (24-5.9) (3-7) in relief of Pop Yurkovich (34-5.6). Baltimore scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but Milwaukee scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to win. 2 doubles and then a passed ball and a wild pitch ended the game. Steel allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. In 8 innings, Yurkovich allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. 2B Lou Bohus (26-5.4) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs. LF Ted Steeves (24-4.2) hit 3 doubles, including 1 to lead off the 9th, scored a run and had an RBI.
