United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 8
Round 1 - Part 8:
Roger Bernard vs Danny Rios - Bernard dominated in every category in this one, though Rios proved he was game throughout. Bernard's ring generalship and accurate jab and crosses were the tale at the end as he took the 9-5, 11-3 and 11-3 decision. Art Aragon vs Jimmy Robertson - Aragon floated effortlessly around the ring to keep Robertson off balance while peppering him from all angles in the first 10 rounds. Robertson did better in the final 5 rounds, but Aragon still piled up the rounds to earn the easy 13-2, 14-1 and 13-1 decision. Luther White vs Martin E. Snee - White was the superior athelete, sticking and moving, scoring in bunches while showing superior defense in his 11-2, 12-1 and 9-3 decision. Sonny Boy West vs Eddie Zivic - West came in a big favorite, but Zivic was more active, more accurate and more mobile in this one as he pulled out the close 8-5, 7-6 and 8-5 upset. Sid Terris vs Kelcie Banks - Terris was in control throughout, though he did take a few rounds off, allowing Banks to steal some rounds. It wasn't enough for Banks however as Terris took the 10-4, 9-4 and 10-5 decision. Allie Stolz vs Crocky Boyle - Stolz seemed to be in control throughout this fight, despite horrid officiating when the referee took a point away from him in the 9th for a non existant late punch at the end of the round. Things got stranger when the fight was sent to the judges however, as they scored it 8-6 Boyle, 7-6 Stolz and 10-3 for the winner by split decision Stolz. I had it 9-4 Stolz myself. Paul Spadafora vs Jimmy Britt - Britt did suprisingly well early, but faded in this tactical bout that had plenty of action from both men. Spadafora closed strong to take the 11-3, 8-6 and 10-3 decision. Al Singer vs John Brown - Singer was simply dominating despite a cut over his right eye due to an intentional head butt from Brown. He nearly ended the fight on several occasions, with Brown's left eye ballooning at an alarming rate. Singer scored 2 knockdowns in the 12th, but somehow Brown held on then reopened the cut over Singer's eye in the 13th for the improbable, (and to most observers) unfair upset TKO by Brown. |

Seeing how far a guy like Spadafora can go is one of the great things about this tournament. Awesome job once again.
Edit: searched for Anthony Boyle but came up empty. Did he make the tournament??? Pretty sure he'd be lightweight for it. Last edited by JOHNNYGUAPO; 08-09-2011 at 08:45 PM. |

Glad you're having fun with this!
As for Anthony Boyle, he wasn't in the database when I started this. I made the decision not to upgrade the DB so as not to change anything due to the length of time I expected this to run. (I'm a bit behind where I thought I'd be..lol) |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 9
Round 1 - Part 9:
Solly Seeman vs Sam Collyer - Seeman built up a lead then held on as Collyer mounted a comeback punctuated by Seeman losing a point in the 15th for his third low blow of the fight. I had it 8-6 Seeman, but with so many close rounds it was really a toss up as it went to the score cards. The judges scored it 9-5, 8-7 and 9-5 for Seeman as one judge didn't take a point off his score card for the unanimous decision. Milburn Saylor vs Billy Dacey - An exciting brawl in this one as both men took turns dominating, with Saylor scoring the lone knockdown in the 13th round to take a slight lead. They split the final 2 action packed rounds and it went to the score cards with the judges scoring it 9-6, 9-5 and 8-7 for Saylor. Sean O'Grady vs Joseph Figueroa - Figueroa tried to fight smart, dancing and sticking his jab in the face of O'Grady at every turn, but by the 5th he was holding his arms low as O'Grady's withering body attack sapped his energy. O'Grady built up the lead then landed a looping overhand right that floored Figueroa for an 8 count then trapped him against the ropes and pummeled him until the referee halted it later in the round for the TKO. Ruben Navarro vs Toby Irwin - Navarro was scintillating, moving in, tagging Irwin then sliding away most of the fight. Irwin had some great moments in the middle of the fight, but was unable to sustain the offensive pace that Navarro was providing throughout the bout. The judges scored it 12-2, 10-4 and 11-3 for Navarro. Mel Middleton vs Tim Kearns - Middleton was favored, and scored a knockdown in the 3rd round only to have Kearns roar back and build up a huge lead. In the 14th round Kearns scored a knockdown of his own then piled it on before the referee halted the bout to save Middleton from serious harm, handing Kearns the upset TKO in this high scoring battle between 2 sluggers. George McFadden vs Ritchie Mack - McFadden started fast in the 1st round, then Mack roared back taking the 2nd and 3rd rounds of what had been expected to be a tactical bout between a pair of boxers. McFadden stepped in just as Mack ducked under a left hook and landed a picture perfect uppercut in the 4th that had Mack down for the count! Sammy Mandell vs Bob Matthews - Matthews really took it to the favored Mandell in this one early, scoring a 7th round knockdown while building up a solid lead. Mandell's strategy seemed to be to let Matthews punch himself out, and it worked as he faded in the final 5 rounds, with Mandell scoring a knockdown of his own in the 14th then piled on the points in the 15th round, nearly having Matthews out on his feet when the bell rang. The scoring was expected to be close, (I had it 8-7 Matthews) The judges had it 8-7, 9-6 and 8-7 for the winner by upset decision Matthews. Ray Mancini vs George Monroe - Monroe came in with a plan, and stuck to it, but Mancini's body work overcame the slick boxing of Monroe as he brought his hands down then scored a wicked uppercut in the 4th for the KO. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 10
Round 1 - Part 10:
Rocky Kansas vs Art Ramponi - A good tough fight that saw Kansas on his back in the 1st and 4th rounds. The 8th was a thing of beauty as both men rocked the other throughout, and it was dead even when Kansas scored a knockdown early in the 9th then pummeled Ramponi unmercifully throughout the round before the referee halted the bout as Ramponi had clearly had enough. Harold Jones vs Jimmy Reilly - Jones easily took the first 5 rounds but Reilly came roaring back. Neither man went down in this one, and Reilly had major swelling, but it was close at the end. I had it 8-6 Jones, and the crowd jeered when the 8-6 Reilly, 7-6 Jones and 8-7 Reilly decision was read. Jones landed over 500 shots, was accurate at 50.8% and allowed Reilly only 276 shots landed for a 16.5% connect rate yet still lost the decision. Steve Johnston vs Young Starr - Johnston boxed effortlessly for the first 2 rounds, then Starr tagged him a few times in the 3rd. In the 4th, Johnston caught Starr coming in with a viscious combination that ended Starr's dream of glory with the KO. Greg Haugen vs Rick Yoshimura-Roberts - A hotly contested bout that saw Haugen cut in the 7th. His corner did well, and he nearly closed both eyes of Yoshimura-Roberts, but neither man could get the edge, though Haugen's punch stats were far better. It was Yoshimura-Roberts that landed the harder shots though, having the favored Haugen in trouble several times. I had Haugen pulling it out 8-6, but the judges saw it differently, scoring it 6-5 Haugen, 7-6 for Yoshimura-Roberts and 7-7 even for the draw. Rematch to follow. Bruce Flowers vs Roy Andrews - This was expected to be a tactical bout, and it started out that way as they split the first 2 rounds. Flowers tagged Andrews with a wicked combination in the 3rd however that was lights out for Andrews. Billy Ernst vs Gary Balletto - A good close fight saw Balletto score the first knockdown of the fight in the 11th only to have Ernst pick up the pace, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 13th and another in the 15th to close strong and take the 10-5, 10-5 and 10-4 decision. Tyrone Crawley vs Sam Bolen - This one started out with bad refereeing as the ref took a point from Crawley in the 1st round for a blow that was on the belt. Bolen then scored a knockdown in the 3rd, and Crawley had to pull himself together. From the 10th round on it was all Crawley as he pulled out the narrow 8-6, 6-7 and 8-5 split decision. Dennis Pat Brady vs Andy Bowen - A cat and mouse game with Bowen moving well and countering as Brady stormed in throughout the bout. It was close, but Bowen seemed to be forging ahead when Brady tore open a gash on the right eyelid of Bowen to halt the bout in the 14th round for the TKO. Rematch: Greg Haugen vs Rick Yoshimura-Roberts - Haugen scored two knockdowns in the 8th and 2 in the 13th, but Yoshimura-Roberts kept coming, actually scoring better in this one, while showing a bit better defense. While I had Haugen winning the first bout, I had Yoshimura-Roberts pulling this one out in the 15th, 8-7. The judges scored it 8-7 for Yoshimura-Roberts, 8-7 for Haugen and 8-7 for the winner by upset split decision Yoshimura-Roberts. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 11
Round 1 - Part 11:
Paul Armstead vs Texas Jack Burke - A good action bout with Burke stalking and Armstead taking pot shots from the outside. Burke had the early lead, but Armstead seemed to be in control despite several fouls throughout the fight. In the 15th round with Armstead ahead by the slimmest of margins, 7-6, 7-7 and 7-6 he landed his 6th low blow of the fight and was disqualified in a round that he was winning handily, thus he would have won the fight. George Araujo vs Courtney Burton - An amazing action bout saw Araujo forge ahead early only to have the tough Burton storm back and nearly have Araujo out on his feet on several occasions. Both men seemed punched out near the end of an action packed 9th when Araujo landed a sweet uppercut that nearly ended Burton's night. Fast foward to the 10th, and Araujo, sensing that Burton hadn't fully recovered from the previous round's knockdown, came out head hunting and scored 3 knockdowns in the round, the final one for the 10 count of this highly entertaining slugfest! No defense at all in this one as Burton landed 57.8% of his shots and Araujo landed 50% of his. Sammy Angott vs James Crayton - Angott did a good job of keeping Crayton at bay in the first 2 rounds, but Crayton scored well in the 3rd, though Angott countered ferociously. Angott was in control again in a solid 3rd, though he suffered a tear on his right eyelid late in the round. His corner couldn't staunch the flow of blood, and it widened late in the 5th for the upset TKO by Crayton on cuts. George Zengaras vs Wilmington Jack Daly - I had Zengaras sweeping the first 6 rounds, all close with Daly storming back from the 7th on to make things close. In the end of this tactical battle I felt Zengaras held on to win by the slimmest of margins, 8-7 while the judges had it 9-6 Znegaras, 8-7 Daly and 7-6 for the winner by split decision, the favored Zengaras. Harry Stone vs Walter Edgerton - A slow tactical bout that was too close to call through 10 was ended when Stone reopened a gash over the right eye of Edgerton in the 11th for the TKO. Sammy Smith vs Joe Ghnouly - Both men had reputations as being light hitters, but Ghnouly landed a big uppercut that dropped Smith to the canvas in the 1st round. Smith also had swelling around his right eye after that round, and it made the difference as the swelling continued though Smith fought back valiantly as they traded rounds for the first 10 rounds. With the swelling getting worse, Ghnouly was able to dictate the pace in the final 5 rounds however to pull off the 7-8, 9-6 and 9-6 upset split decision. Zahir Raheem vs Freddie Herman - Raheem was able to stop Herman from dancing around the ring, using good footwork and a wicked body attack to score well throughout. He landed a knockdown shot in the 10th, then 3 more in the 14th enroute to the 12-2, 11-4 and 11-3 decision. Arthur Persley vs Bobby Johnson - A close tactical bout with little action when Persley started to really tee off in an impressive 9th round, opening a gash over the left eye of Johnson. Later in the round however, Johnson landed a brilliant combination that had Persley down for a 9 count and he nearly ended the fight when time ran out in the round. Early in the 10th Persley landed a crushing hook that reopened the cut over the eye of Johnson, ending the fight just as it was starting to heat up for the TKO. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 12
Round 1 - Part 12:
Lulu Perez vs Horace Leeds - Perez did the stalking, and fought well, but it was Leeds that showed the suprising power, scoring knockdowns in the 6th then again in the 13th. After each knockdown, Perez came back strong in the next few rounds, giving us a very close and very hard fight to score. I had it 8-7 Perez as he took the final round. The judges had it 8-7 Leeds, 9-6 Perez and 9-6 for the favorite Perez! Young Otto vs David Sample - Otto was the definite favorite, but Sample was clever, moving well and countering with suprising precision, out landing Otto throughout, and nearly closing his right eye to earn the suprisingly easy 10-4, 7-7 (odd score here) and 10-4 majority decision. Tony Morgano vs Art Simms - A very close tactical bout that saw decent action for only about 1/3rd of the bout. It went the distance with Morgano taking the 9-6, 7-8 and 8-7 split decision. Jeff Mayweather vs Tracy Spann - Mayweather chose to stand toe to toe with the powerful Spann, and he was out slugged throughout. In the 9th Mayweather was cut under his right eye, but then opened a gaping gash over the right eye of Spann that ended the fight for the come from behind TKO. Spann was up 7-1, 6-2 and 5-3 through the 8th. Len Matthews vs Larry Stanton - An absolutely brutal bout that saw both men land heavy leather, despite neither man going down. Both men had swelling around the right eye, but Matthews landed the harder shots and closed the right eye of Stanton then pounded him in the corner until the referee halted the bout with 28 seconds left in the 15th. Matthews was up 9-3, 7-5 and 7-5 through 14. Joe Lopes vs Pee Wee Swingler - Excellent action bout in what was expected to be totally tactical saw Swingler build up a lead then hold on while Lopes tried to forge a comeback. The upset minded Swingler did enough to pull out the decision 8-7, 9-6 and 9-5. Kenny Lane vs Tommy Tibbs - This one started slow, but Tibbs opened a gash over the right eye of Lane in the 2nd then reopened it for the TKO early in the 3rd round to secure the upset. Paul Junior vs Andy Watson - Junior lost 2 points due to low blows, but was dominant throughout, building up an insurmountable points lead before a gash on the inside of the brow of Watson ended the fight for the TKO in the 13th round. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 13
Round 1 - Part 13:
Leavander Johnson vs Julian Wheeler - Johnson started fast, taking the first 6 rounds on my card with a devastating body attack. Wheeler dug deep however, coming back strong in the next 2 rounds only to have Johnson rock him early and often, finally having Wheeler sagging against the ropes when the referee correctly stepped in for the 9th round TKO by Johnson. Billy Hill vs Ernesto Zavala - Zavala came out throwing crisp shots in the 1st round only to walk into a crushing right hand later in the round by Hill. Zavala survived the round, and his corner did a great job of reviving him as Zavala was the quicker getting off in the 2nd round, then carried it forward with a wicked uppercut that dropped Hill to the canvas for the 10 count 1:40 into the round to hand Zavala a hard fought upset KO. Arturo Frias vs Brian Adams - Mostly a defensive bout with some good spurts of action. This one went back and forth throughout with Frias opening a cut in the 8th on the forehead of Adams. It wasn't a factor until the 11th when Frias widened it to the point that the fight had to be stopped for the Frias TKO. Jack Everhardt vs Cisco Andrade - A grueling bout with some terrific action saw Andrade effective in keeping pressure on the slicker Everhardt. Everhardt was able to counter effectively, and was slowly building a lead in a hotly contested bout when in the 8th Andrade landed a cross that tore the left eyelid of Everhardt to halt the bout for the upset TKO. Roberto Elizondo vs Lou Bizzarro - Bizzarro's footwork and handspeed controlled the pace of the fight for the first 5 rounds, but Bizzarro's patience paid off as he was able to close the gap as Bizzarro started to tire. Through the 12th I had it dead even when Elizondo tore a huge gash on the right eyebrow of Bizzarro midway through the 13th for the TKO of a very entertaining bout. Ebo Elder vs Jackie Blair - Elder came out dancing, building up a solid lead then scored knockdowns in the 7th, 12th and the KO shot in the 14th. Elder's approach was confusing to Blair as he changed tactics often throughout the fight, sticking and moving, then another round he'd fight close, which disrupted Blair's rythym throughout. George Dunn vs Tony Chavez - Chavez was very effective in cutting off the ring against Dunn, moving in then ripping the body effectively. Dunn countered very well at times, keeping the fight close, when a hook by Chavez tore open a gash on the hairline of Dunn in the 7th. The cut burst open in the 8th for the TKO on cuts by the underdog Chavez. Danny Duane vs Michael Clark - Clark was the aggressor throughout, building up a solid lead, but Duane's offense, while limited at times was effective as he caused major swelling around both eyes. Duane started to open up half way through the fight when he understood that Clark could no longer see punches effectively and closed strong. I had Duane winning 9-5, while the judges scored it 8-6 Clark, 10-4 Duane and 7-7 even for the draw. Rematch: Danny Duane vs Michael Clark - Most felt that Duane was robbed, and he came out trying to take control early, but after an action packed 1st round he went back into dancing mode, allowing Clark to control the pace. He also landed several low blows, and scored a knockdown in the 8th round, but Clark was unphased, keeping pressure on throughout until in the 12th, with Clark well ahead, Duane landed yet another blow well south of the border for the Clark win by DQ. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 14
Round 1 - Part 14:
Paddy DeMarco vs Al Davis - This was fought at a furious pace, with Davis ripping devastating shots, scoring a 4th round knockdown. DeMarco fought from the outside offensively throughout, landing combinations seemingly at will, opening cuts on the lip and above the right eye of Davis. While DeMarco landed an amazing 625 shots to 295 for Davis, it was Davis landing the far harder shots. It went the full 15, with the judges scoring it 9-5, 10-4 and 11-3 for DeMarco. Henry Davis vs John L. Davis - A back and forth bout that saw John L. land the harder shots, but Henry was able to stick and move well at times. I had it 8-6 Henry, while the judges had it 7-7, 7-5 for Henry and 7-7 even for the majority draw. Leach Cross vs Jackie Donnelly - Cross started slowly, but roared back, building up a solid lead only to have it slip away as Donnelly took control despite a gash on his right eyebrow in the 7th round. It reopened and widened, and with Donnelly seemingly taking control of the fight, Cross reopened it in the 12th for the TKO on cuts. Eleazar Contreras Jr. vs Ray Estapa - Contreras Jr. was cut in the 3rd round, and fought very well from there, protecting the cut while peppering the slower Estapa from the outside. In the 10th round Estapa landed a hard shot that rocked Contreras Jr., but also broke his right hand, ending the fight for the Contreras Jr. TKO. George Chaney vs Lou Filippo - This started out close, with both men having some good moments when Filippo stunned the crowd in the 8th with a knockdown. Chaney survived the round, then took control with a strong 9th followed by a devastating hook in the 10th that put Filippo down for the count. Israel Cardona vs Anthony Fletcher - Cardona used a brutal body attack to build up a slight lead as Fletcher was able to use slick movement and a withering counter attack to keep close. I had Cardona up 8-5 through 13, with Fletcher coming back strong in the final two rounds. Unfortunately he wasn't able to stop Cardona, sending it to the judges (I had it 8-7 Cardona). They scored it 8-7, 9-6 and 8-7 for Cardona. Tim Callahan vs Andy Ganigan - The light hitting Callahan shocked everyone with a knockdown in the 1st round, but Ganigan controlled the pace from there, scoring well to the body and sapping the leg strength from Callahan. Ganigan scored his own knockdown in the 8th then pummelled Callahan through the 9th then the 10th before the referee stepped in to halt the bout as Ganigan comprehensively dominated in this one for the upset. Johnny Busso vs Ever Hammer - There were a lot of close rounds in this one, but I had Busso doing the most damage, scoring well from outside and controlling the pace. In the 15th round a cut from the 7th round burst open 30 seconds into the round and that was the end of things for Hammer as Busso moves on with the late TKO. Rematch: Henry Davis vs John L. Davis - Henry built up a solid lead, then was cut on the forehead due to an accidental butt in the 7th. John L. came aback strong in the middle rounds, but it appeared that Henry had taken control of things when the cut reopened in the 12th to halt the bout and send it to the scorecards. The judges had it 5-4 for John L., 6-4 for Henry, and 6-4 for John L. who took the upset split decision. |

Paddy vs Bummy is a good fight. Ganigan is a beast in the game for his rating. He has iced big time fighters in my tourneys. Though I improved him slightly.

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 15
Round 1 - Part 15:
James Busceme vs Willie Jackson - Busceme came out like gang busters, trying to score a KO in a dominant 1st round. He seemed to run out of gas, allowing Jackson to take the lion's share of rounds until the 6th when Busceme once again asserted his dominance. Finally after pummeling Jackson again in the 7th, he scored a pair of knockdowns in the 8th, icing Jackson with the 2nd with 42 seconds left in the round. Jimmy Briggs vs Lew Jenkins - Briggs did well in the opening round, but then it was all Jenkins as he scored a big knockdown in the 4th round then continued to dominate. In the 10th, Briggs landed a haymaker that dropped Jenkins for an 8 count, but it was too little too late as Jenkins took the 8-2 decision on all 3 cards. Kenny Bogner vs Ah Wing Lee - These 2 sluggers stood toe to toe through out with Bogner holding a slight lead when Lee opened a nasty gash over the left eye that streamed blood into the eye, allowing Lee to land a huge uppercut for the KO with 1:11 left in the 6th. Larry Boardman vs Manny Madrid - This was a bit of a dud, despite a scintillating 10th that saw both men trading leather furiously. In the end the stalking Boardman did enough to secure the 7-2, 8-2 & 7-3 decision. Robin Blake vs Tote Martinez - Close battle with Martinez boxing well at times, but Blake landed enough power shots to take the 5-4, 4-4 6-4 majority decision. Joe Benjamin vs Richie Mitchell - Mitchell built up a decent lead through 6 then held on as Mitchell pummeled him throughout the final 4 rounds, nearly closing both eyes. In the end the fight went to the judges who scored it 5-3 Benjamin, 7-3 Mitchell & 6-4 Mitchell for the split decision. Harry Arroyo vs Herman Montes - Toe to toe action in this one as Arroyo dominated with a knockdown in the 1st then the KO in the 4th. Joey Angelo vs Lamar Murphy - Murphy was boxing well, despite a 2nd round cut to take a 4-2 lead on all 3 cards before Angelo reopened the cut in the 7th for the come from behind TKO. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 1 - Part 16
Round 1 - Part 16:
Mike Anchondo vs William Parker - After 2 lackluster rounds Parker landed a big right hand in the 3rd. Anchondo responded in a big way, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 4th, the final one was lights out as Parker couldn't respond. Stanley Yoakum vs Melvin Paul - Yoakum was in control throughout as he pummeled Paul with an assortment of punches from all angles, scoring knockdowns in the 8th then the 9th before Paul's corner tossed in the towel for the TKO. Sammy Vogel vs Lamont Pearson - A tactical bout that saw both men bleeding at times from cuts over the right eye. Pearson seemed to be the sharper of the two though taking the surprisingly close 7-3, 5-5 & 7-3 majority decision. Jimmy Tygh vs Steve Quinonez - A back and forth bout in the first 6 rounds saw Quinonez take control in the latter rounds to pull out the 6-4, 5-5 & 6-4 majority decision. Jimmy Soo vs Mando Ramos - An excellent action bout saw Ramos moving and scoring as Soo countered well while moving away. In the end it was a broken left hand suffered by Soo that resulted in the TKO in the 7th with the scores even on 2 cards and 3-1 Ramos on the 3rd. Wallace Smith vs Mexican Joe Rivers - A dull tactical bout saw flashes of brilliance by both men at rare intervals. In the end it seemed Smith was in control, but the judges saw it differently as Rivers took the controversial 6-4, 4-5, 6-3 split decision. Maxie Shapiro vs Rafael Ruelas - A close action bout as both men stood toe to toe. Ruelas had the clear power edge as he scored a knockdown in the 6th, but Shapiro landed a hard left right combo in the 9th round to break the jaw of his opponent for the TKO. Bobby Scanlon vs Frankie Ryff - It took 5 rounds of posturing, but a fight broke out in the 2nd half. They went back and forth, with my card being 5-5. The judges saw enough to score it 6-4, 5-5 and 6-4 for the favorite, Scanlon. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 2 - Part 1
Round 2 - Part 1:
Barney Ross vs Rocky Randell - A shocker that left me speechless as Ross controlled the bout but Randell scored well enough to open a cut in the 3rd then reopened it several times before the fight was stopped in the 9th for the biggest upset in the Lightweight Tourney! Ross was up 5-2 on all 3 cards through the 8th round. Benny Leonard vs Eddie Zivic - Leonard dominated in all phases of this fight, scoring a 2nd round knockdown, opening a cut under the right eye of Zivic & nearly closing the right eye. It went the distance, but it was academic as the judges had it rightfully for Leonard 9-0, 9-0 and 8-1. Henry Armstrong vs John Brown - It's never advisable to stand toe to toe with Armstrong as Brown found out the hard way, going down in the 1st, 2 times in the 4th then again in the 6th before the referee mercifully ended it for the TKO, sending John Browns tourney hopes to molder in the grave. Pernell Whitaker vs Tim Kearns - Whitaker dominated this fight, scoring a 2nd round knockdown enroute to the easy 8-2 decision on all 3 cards. Shane Mosley vs Bob Matthews - Mosley was faster, stronger & dominant as he scored the 4th round TKO despite Matthews never leaving his feet. Packey McFarland vs Jimmy Reilly - McFarland came into this fight terribly out of shape & it showed as it was the ever stalking Reilly that dominated the first 3 rounds before the fight was halted due to a horrid cut on the inside of the right eyelid of McFarland for the 2nd big upset of the round. Joe Gans vs Rick Yoshimura-Roberts - Gans put on a boxing clinic for 4 rounds before landing a flurry of punches in the 5th to ice Yoshimura-Roberts. Tony Canzoneri vs Texas Jack Burke - Canzoneri seemed a bit off in this one and Burke fought surprisingly well at times, but Canzoneri shined in the end winning a hard fought 6-3, 5-3 & 5-3 decision. |

United States - Lightweights - Round 2 - Part 2
Round 2 - Part 2:
Ike Williams vs James Crayton - Dominant performance by Williams as he dropped Crayton 2 times & opened a cut that ended up being the deciding factor in the fatal 7th round for the TKO on cuts. Beau Jack vs Joe Ghnouly - Jack worked inside with ferocious abandon as Ghnouly wasn't able to mount an offense. 10 rounds later a tired Jack raised his hands in victory as the judges scored it 8-2, 8-2 and 7-3. Oscar De La Hoya vs David Sample - De La Hoya never seemed to get untracked, as Sample's cute movement gave him fits. While I had it 6-4 De La Hoya, the judges saw it differently 5-5 on all 3 cards for the surprising draw. Joe Brown vs Pee Wee Swingler - Scintillating defense and accurate counter punching carried Brown to a rather pedestrian 8-2, 6-3 & 7-3 decision over the game Swingler. Jack Blackburn vs Tommy Tibbs - Neither man seemed willing to mix it up for the most part, but Blackburn was in control throughout as he won handily 9-1, 8-2 & 9-1. California Jackie Wilson vs Ernesto Zavala - Other than an action packed 3rd round along with a 9th round knockdown of Zavala, this was a dull bout. With many close (read no action) rounds it was a hard one to call, though the judges handed it to Wilson 6-4, 8-2 & 6-4. Lew Tendler vs Cisco Andrade - Tendler opened a gash over the right eyebrow of Andrade in the 2nd round then targeted it throughout, reopening it in the 2nd then again in the 3rd for the TKO on cuts. Wesley Mouzon vs Tony Chavez - This was a surprise, as 2 stylists mixed it up pretty well. Mouzon came in the heavy favorite, but it was Chavez that scored the lone knockdown. Mouzon lost a point in the 5th, & the scoring was close because of it 6-3 Mouzon, 4-4 even and 5-4 for Mouzon who moves on to the 3rd round. Rematch: Oscar De La Hoya vs David Sample - De La Hoya came in with a lot more energy this time, smothering Sample for most of the fight. He capped off a dominant performance with a 10th round knockdown en-route to the 7-2, 9-1 7-3 decision.

United States - Lightweights - Round 2 - Part 3
Round 2 - Part 3:
Bob Montgomery vs Michael Clark - Montgomery didn't show much offense in this, but with stifling defense won the surprisingly close 6-2, 6-4, 7-3 decision. Jimmy Goodrich vs John L Davis - After a scintillating 1st round where both men scored well, Goodrich seemed to shy away from Davis, allowing the underdog to stay in the fight all the way through. I had Goodrich taking the final round to win 5-4 while the judges had it 5-4 Goodrich, 5-4 Davis and 5-3 for the winner by split decision Goodrich. Rufe Turner vs Andy Ganigan - Ganigan is known for his game changing power, but it was Turner that won a tougher than expected decision behind 3 knockdowns, 7-3 on all cards. Joe Shugrue vs Lew Jenkins - Shugrue was the prohibitive favorite, and came out swinging, but Jenkins countered well and used subtle movement throughout to pull off the decision in my eyes 5-3 after Jenkins lost a round to a low blow. The judges scored it 6-3 Jenkins, 5-3 Shugrue and 4-4 even for the draw however, sending this to a rematch. Willie Ritchie vs Ah Wing Lee - An accidental butt in the 3rd led to the fight being stopped in the 8th round for a technical decision as the blood streaming down Lee's face was impeding his vision. Ritchie handled Lee easily to earn the 5-2, 5-2 and 6-1 decision. Wesley Ramey vs Richie Mitchell - Mitchell opened a nasty gash right in the middle of the right eyebrow in the 1st, and after 4 stops for the doctor to take a look, the fight was called for the upset TKO early in the 2nd round as Mitchell moves on to round 3. Billy Petrolle vs Lamont Pearson - A true slugfest saw both men scoring at will it seemed through the first 4 rounds. I had it even, but Petrolle landed big right hands in the 5th and the 6th, the final knockdown for the count. Jimmy Paul vs Steve Quinonez - A highly competitive boxing match saw Paul win the majority of the rounds when Quinonez broke his left hand on the temple of Paul in the 8th for the TKO. Rematch: Joe Shugrue vs Lew Jenkins - Jenkins didn't box this time, he stood toe to toe throughout with the heavily favored Shugrue. It was a barn burner as both men traded heavy leather throughout, with Jenkins building up what I thought was an insurmountable lead going into the 10th. Shugrue dropped Jenkins for a 7 count, but Jenkins gamely held on to force it to the score cards, where I had it 7-3 Jenkins. The judging was odd yet again, as it was 7-3 Jenkins, 6-4 Shugrue and 7-3 for Jenkins for the upset split decision.

United States - Lightweights - Round 2 - Part 4
Round 2 - Part 4:
Hilmer Kenty vs Mando Ramos - Kenty came in a 3-1 favorite to win this one, but Ramos had other ideas. It was close through 6 rounds, and in the 7th Ramos came out and landed several bombs that had Kenty reeling when the referee stepped in to halt the bout for the TKO with 3 seconds left in the round. Dave Holly vs Mexican Joe Rivers - Rivers started strong in the early rounds, but Holly took over in the 4th, putting a string of 6 straight strong rounds to seal the deal despite a strong effort by Rivers in the 10th. The scoring was 7-3, 7-3 and 5-4 for Holly. Sammy Fuller vs Bobby Scanlon - Fuller was in complete control in this one, moving well and using several clever combinations to frustrate Scanlon, when Scanlon blatantly hit Fuller south of the border in the 7th, the referee stepped in and halted the fight for the DQ. Bobby Dobbs vs Maxie Shapiro - Shapiro simply outworked the favored Dobbs in this one early, building up a solid lead, then weathering the storm as Dobbs came on strong in the latter rounds. The scoring was 6-4 Shapiro, 5-5 even and 7-3 for the winner by majority decision, Shapiro. Julio Diaz vs Stanley Yoakum - Diaz danced the night away against the ever stalking Yoakum. That made for a beautiful fight however as both men put in an effort worthy of Fight of the Year consideration! Yoakum built up a solid lead then Diaz changed gears, going on the offensive, scoring a huge knockdown in the 10th round and having Yoakum out on his feet when the bell rang! It went to the judges, & I had it 6-4 Yoakum, but you never know with judges. They had it 5-4 Yoakum, 5-4 Diaz and 5-4 for the winner by split decision Yoakum, who pulls off the upset to survive in this tourney. Freddie Dawson vs Mike Anchondo - Early on it was a back and forth affair, but Dawson's brilliant counter work allowed him to pull away and seal the 6-3 6-2 and 6-4 decision. Lulu Costantino vs Joey Angelo - Angelo constantly led with his head in the 1st round, opening a nasty gash on the left eyebrow of Angelo. Stellar cut work by Costantino's corner staved off a disaster and allowed Costantino to fight with brilliant abandon throughout, taking the 7-1, 6-2 & 6-2 decision. Jimmy Carter vs Harry Arroyo - This started out as an all out brawl, but Carter's strength, speed & conditioning ended up dictating the pace as he scored knockdowns in the 9th and 10th to win handily 8-2 on all 3 cards.
