That was a decent cross, that just needed a striker to attack the near post and get in front of the keeper. Maybe a foot or so too close, but not bad at all.

Crespo was almost as dead as Ballack is now, they were playing to defend the lead, you cant fault them for taking Crespo out.

I wasn't really dismissing Americans, more focusing on the 'purist' aspect - of which there are of course more in Europe or South America due to the history.

he could see no one was going to be on the front post, put it at the top of the 6, or at least closer to it...it ended up right in the keepers chest.

There was a player only a few feet away, who just didn't attack it as quickly as he might have.

Sorry, I didn't know that. I'm not watching. I thought they just took Crespo out for extra defense.

If Argentina loses they will rue changing their usual style....Germany played a poor first 60.

I was just explaining the situation, no need to apologize.

Don't know if this one has been mentioned:

Germany have won 13 out of 14 penalty shootout competitions in their international tournament history - they haven't lost on penalties since either 1972 or 1976, I forget which.

I was disappointed with Argentina's tactics against Mexico, and again today from what I've heard. They have the ability to be much more positive than this.

Pre-emptive strike: there's nothing wrong, IMO, with penalty shootouts to settle a game after ET fails to do so. There is a basic test of football ability - beat the keeper from 12 yards - with a huge test of mental strength. That's the essence of sport.
