He even started off with a win over Goddard. He hasn't fought Goddard in my uni but I don't think he would beat him. Keep up the good work in your universe. Always one of the best.

Alot of high random #'s generated this month so only 44 of the 122 beginners were in action. They went 36-5-3 against the TC's.

Bob McAllister was bypassed again this month, but he will automatically be scheduled next month after missing 3 straight months.

Slavin is pretty solid in my uni as well, although that recent upset to Chet Shandel was a biggie. Goddard, on the other hand, hasn't been able ot gain much traction so far.

It's interesting to see how fighters develop different careers in different uni's. Part of what makes the game fun.

Goddard has struggled to a 16-17-1 record in my uni ... even lost to J. Barrington.

171 out of the 471 main division fighters were scheduled to fight this month with 53 of them going against TC's. They went 50-1-2.

LH - (WBC) George Byers (2) (14-7-1) vs. John Donaldson (4) (17-11) (fought in Jan. 1909 with Byers winning a UD10, for vacant WBC title)

MW - (WBC) Charles McCoy (CH) (27-8-3) vs Billy McCarthy (3) (26-12-3) (3rd meeting between the two with McCoy winning with a TKO6 in Sept. 1901 and a TECH Draw 3 in 1906)

LW - (WBA) Frank Erne (CH) (19-5-2) vs. Aurelio Herrera (12) (19-8) (first meeting, 3 others were ranked higher than Herrera but two had lost their last fight and the 3rd was a pre-prime who fought a TC)

Somewhere Javier is doing the happy dance. Hopefully Herrera can pull this one out. I'm going with Herrera by late stoppage.

Yeah thanks to Javier I have an unnatural manly love for Herrera ... it's all I can do not to bend the rules to help him out. I've been wanting him to get a title shot at LW for a while now and this time luck was on his side. If he loses this I'm debating moving him back to FW .... LW has gotten pretty tough in the last couple of years.

Ha, yeah I know what you mean Javier manage to turn me it a Herrera Fanboy to. So what do you think his chances of beating Erne are.

I think pretty good ... herrera has had problems against slick boxers ... his losses read like a recording ... two to Attell, two to Driscoll, two to Griffo, one to Young Corbett ... only the fluke loss to Hanlon stands out as a bad loss. Erne has -2 defense so it won't be easy, but Attell, Driscoll and Griffo all had -6.

If he can catch Erne, he'll beat him.

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the WBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization. Also I will list my scorecard on the fights I watch in bold.

July 1, 1910

John Donaldson (7/CH) (18-11) avenged an earlier loss and scored a UD15 over George Byers (3/4) (14-8-1) to win the vacant WBC Lightheavyweight title.

Byers came in undertrained and paid the price for it as Donaldson knocked around the ring for 15 rounds. The first six rounds were close but by the 7th Byers was out of endurance and then it was an onslaught.

There were no knockdowns or cuts in the fight but Byers left eye, which started swelling in the 2nd, was completely swollen shut by the 11th. (went into the red the last 3 rounds)

I had it 148-141. Javier Flores, ringside expert, had it 148-140. The official judges were a little more generous scoring it 146-141/146-142/146-142.

So there you have it you're two current LH champs are John Donaldson and Alec Greggains.

On the undercard

MW - Jeff Clarke (UR) (13-1) TKO1 Joe Costa (47/48) (10-7-5) (clarke at pre)

MW - Jack Williams (49/36) (14-7-2) KO10 Eddie McGoorty (4/37) (17-4) 86-83 mcgoorty (mcgoorty at pre ... horrible loss for Eddie. Plummets in the rankings and will have a battle to get back up top. Was well ahead on the scorecards despite going down in the 9th. If he'd finished on his feet he probably would have won)

Is this the same John Donaldson who also fought as a heavy around turn of the century? I don't know much about this guy - what were his notable career fights?

I'm sure it is ... I take a few HW's and toss them down to LHW at the start of every year to help even out the #'s in LH. Donaldson is a 5 so he would have been at the high end since I tend not to toss guys 6 or above down there.

If you look at boxrec you may wander why he is a 5, but boxrec is almost never complete on these older guys. Here is a little more on Donaldson

I remember him as a 6 in my uni, but wouldn't swear to it. In all likelihood, I'm using the same Donaldson ratings as you are, since I do not currently create my own fighters.

I see Donaldson had a couple of brawls with the great John L. Interesting stuff - thanks for sharing.
