Week 6

WEEK 6
RECORD: 4-2
OVERALL: 23-13 1 GB
RUNS SCORED: 244 1st (44)
RUNS AGAINST: 142 1st (23)
OWNERS MOOD: Happy
FAN INTERST: 84/100
SCHEDULE: 3 vs Staten Island/3 @ New York/Off Day

5/3 CHI 4 SI 2 Hudson tie breaking HR (9) in the 8th. Chavez 2-3 SB (6) Lee 8-3-2-2-1-4 W (3-0) Brilliant in first start off the DL. Laconi (SI) 7-6-3-2-2-4 L (1-5 3.64)

STRATEGY CHAT-Ernesto Cruz is, well, the best closer of all time. But, he's no longer the Ernesto Cruz of 2012. I am going to start using situational relievers on days he's less than 100% in hopes I can find a potential closer in waiting. Right now Bill Jones is the righty for end game outs. He saved his 2nd today.

5/4 CHI 11 SI 3 10 run 1st inning. Blakeway 3-5 2 RBI's (14) SB (1) Ash 3-3 Miranda 1-3 2B (8) 3 RBI's (20) Collins 2-3 2 HR's (7) 3 RBI's (29) Hall 6-5-1-1-2-7 W (3-0)
5/5 CHI 16 SI 4 Chavez 3-5 2 2B's (11) 3B (1) Blakeway 3B (3) 3 RBI's (17) Hudson 3-5 HR (10) 3 RBI's (33) Trujillo 2-5 HR (1) 3 RBI's (3) Collins 3-5 2 HR's (9) 3 RBI's (32) Martinez 7-6-2-2-2-7 W (6-0)

NOTE-Yes, the “Trujillo” above is my SP, Jorge Trujillo. His nickname is “Slugger”, and he has monster power from the left side. In 25 career AB's he's 7-25 4 HR's 9 RBI's.

ROSTER NEWS-Andy Morgan will come off the DL to start today. Steve McKinley heads back to AAA after an outstanding 3 start run.

5/6 NY 8 CHI 3 Morgan gets pounded 3.1-9-7-7-0-2 L (1-1) Brown (NY) 8-6-2-2-4-7 W (2-1) Miranda 3-4 HR (2)
5/7 CHI 5 NY 0 Trujillo 9-6-0-0-3-6 W (3-1) Hudson HR (11) Jackson 2-4 2 RBI's Shaw 2 SB (2)

5/9 Off Day CONTRACT NEWS-Philadelphia signed star RF Jesus Castro to a 5 year 90M dollar extension.

International FA com,plex

A peek at the players our scouts have managed to sign since the winter time. Some BIG pitchers, and a potential all star catcher from, of all places, Sri Lanka. How can I not pull for this kid?

A look back at the draft...

2021 DRAFT
This being our 10th draft, I thought I’d look back at the top picks from the past 9 years, see who’s done well, and not so well. Any statistics are IBL, unless otherwise noted.

2012 New Hampshire Fisher Cats select Manny Espinoza (18) OF, Vallhalla HS, CA
Career .274/.329/.380 hitter in 553 games. Made it to the IBL in 2016. Still playing for Michigan. Is 128-159 SB’s, had a 5 hit day 4/7/21. Currently batting 2nd and playing LF.

2013 Corpus Christi Hooks select Carlos Medina (17) RHP, Harrison HS, GA
Made it to the IBL in 2017. Spent 3+ seasons as a swing man before being dealt to Brooklyn in 2020. Was traded just 3 days ago to Pittsburgh for 2 players. 27-41 5.16 in 190 games, 77 starts. 530 IP 468 K’s 420 BB’s. Currently the #3 starter in the Bulldog rotation, is 8-3 3.71 on the year

2014 Michigan Battlecats select David Castillo (18) RHP, Nordhoff HS, CA
Made his debut in 2017. Is 32-40 5.10 in 100 career starts. 619 IP 484 K’s 226 BB’s 680 H. Had shoulder surgery in 2014, and again in 2015. Was healthy until a knee problem in ’19 and then the shoulder became a problem last season again. Currently the #3 starter in Michigans rotation and 2-7 6.51.

2015 Chicago Iron Pigs select Pedro Salinas (20) 1B, Oklahoma State U.
If you’ve followed along you know the story. Sept. callup in 2016 and has been the full time 1B every since. A career .300/.403/.535 hitter in 706 games with 152 homers and 532 RBI’s. Just 170 K’s to 477 walks in over 3000 plate appearances.

2016 Corpus Christi Hooks select Adolfo Gobbi (18) RHP, Maryville Christian HS, TN
September callup in 2018, did dual duty in 19 and been a starter every since. Is 21-28 4.34 in 83 games, 69 starts. 458 IP 394 K’s 145 BB’s to 478 hits. Is currently the #2 starter in Corpus Christi with a 6-5 2.50 record.

2017 Boston Bombers select Pat Kelley (22) LHP, South Carolina U.
I believe he is the 1st and only draft pick to never spend a day in the minor leagues. He has been a stud up until March of this year, when he suffered a torn labrum and was deemed out for the entire 2021 season. 46-50 3.63 lifetime in 130 starts. 850 IP 736 H 732 K’s 363 BB. Has finished top 10 in ERA and K’s 2 times. 2019 gold glove winner for CL Pitchers.

2018 Corpus Christi Hooks select Alex Covington (21) IF/OF, Virginia Wesleyam U.
Made his IBL debut in 2020 and is now an everyday player for Corpus Christi. .245/.337/.356 in 170 games with 10 HR 27 2B and 64 RBI’s. The best defensive player anyone has ever seen, at any position you put him at. Scouts have his ratings at 19+ for range, error and arm, and position wise his worst is 2B, which scouts grade him as an 18. He can play every position on the field to a gold glove level. Projects to be a decent runner and OBP machine.

2019 Dayton Dragons select Manuel Rodriguez (22) OF, Florida State U.
Made the 2020 Dragon roster out of camp. A career .263/.331/.420 hitter in 156 games with 35 2B’s 15 HR’s and 21 SB’s. Hitting 2nd in their everyday lineup playing CF. Currently at .322-5-14 in 38 games with a .394 OBP.

2020 Staten Island Yankees select Vincent Everett (18) OF, Redwood Christian HS, CA
Had a nice debut in rookie ball until rupturing his MCL in August. Slated to be ready for the Rookie ball season this year, the IBL’s 24th best prospect.

2021 Draft

2021 Draft
Was thinking the entire time I’d traded for the 1st pick, and I had, until expansion. Hawaii and San Jose are picking 1-2, I have the 3rd pick.
I have my eyes on a few guys, Rob Bright SP, Chris Poe, SP, though both price tags are extreme. David Shields SP and Vincent Meredith SP are on the list. For position players 2B Duane Akers, 3B Paul Lambert, C Edward Crabtree and CF Bob Francis are all high on my list. Signing bonus demands will likely be an issue for many of them.

1st round
1) Hawaii Warriors-With their 1st ever selection they pick 17 year old 1B Tony Williams from Dennis Yarmouth Regional HS, South Yarmouth, MA. Huge power projection, 1B/DH.
2) San Jose Sharks-Take a player on our list. 19 year old Catcher Edward Crabtree from Morningside Academy, Port St Lucie, FL. Already above average receiver and thrower, with a bat scouts love. Amazing work ethic and an animal for scouting reports.
3) Chicago Iron Pigs-Pretty much unanimous on this one. 21 year old Rob “Hitman” Bright should be the choice. A 21 year old lefty who’s likely AAA ready today, out of Eckerd College, St Pete, FL. The dilemma? His 8M demand. Given where we are, and our minor league depth, everyone feels we should push this button and try to get him to commit for a bit less money, and he’s far and away the premiere guy on the board.
4) Staten Island Yankees-They take another player on our board, and the guy we were considering if we were to have passed on Bright. SP Chris Poe, a 20 year old righty from St Johns College. Huge makeup guy, asking 6M to sign.
5) Edmonton Trappers-C Patrick White. 20 year old RH hitter from Kent State. Quiet kid but projects to be a frontline guy in a few years.
6) Dallas Texans-Select OF Bob Francis, a 21 year old out of Nebraska. Gold glove defender today, outstanding wheels, and a base stealer. Top of the order bat if he makes it, questions around his durability though. Asking 4.2M.
7) Boston Bombers-David Shields. 21 year old RHP from Iowa U. Boston has done so well in the draft where pitching is concerned, I don’t doubt they hit it again. Mid 90’s FB slider Change guy, could be a 1A or a 2. 5.5M price tag.
8) Michigan Battlecats-18 year old SP Brady Stephens from Macomb Christian HS, Warren, MI. Our scouts felt you ‘had to want to see it’ with this kid. Mid to upper 80’s fastball right now, but a wide array of secondary pitches. 6’2” 165, the size was also a question. Combined with the 4M price tag, we think there is far better value left.
9) Houston Roughriders-19 year old OF Su Lucott from Abbott HS, TX. Lots of sentiment to grab the ‘hometown’ kid. One of the more mature eyes and approaches we’ve seen in a HS kid. Very good speed, potential 20 HR bat.
10) Brooklyn Cyclones-Brad Walker, 19 year old RH SP from Trinity HS, NY. Low 90’s fastball already. Scouts love the fact he has a very good screwball. Asking 1.9, and after speaking to him we’re wondering if he could count to 9, dumb as hell.

Supplemental Round Pick 10-Our guys really like 21 year old RH SP Jim Burns from Bradley College, Peoria, IL. At 6’ 170 LBS he’s a 94-96 guy who is a huge innings eater. There’s some concern about his ability to keep the ball in the yard, but he looks like a safe pick.
4th Round- Our guys have Gerald Davenport of San Diego U, as the best relief arm in the draft. He’s on the board and we take him.
5th Round-Michael Chambers (20) SP U. of Texas
6th Round-Alfonso Flores (21) OF U. of Michigan
7th Round-Jeremy Bradley (20) SP U. of Florida
8th Round- Randy Schneider (21) OF Fairfield U., CT
9th Round-Billy Annett (21) IF UC-Riverside, CA
10th Round-Dave Donahue (22) C Waterloo U, Kitcherner, Ontario, Canada
11th Round-Dane Wright (22) SP Wisconsin-Milwaukee U.
12th Round-Lorenzo Romero (21) IF UC-Irvine, CA
13th Round-Ned Forbes (20) IF U. of Kansas
14th Round-Paul Malone (21) C Vanderbilt
15th Round-Weldon Fletcher (20) SP San Diego State
16th Round-Brian Walker (21) OF U. of Louisville
17th Round-Jay Berry (21) IF Portland U.
18th Round-Fernando Soto (20) C Southern Mississippi
19th Round-Dan Ford (21) RP Cal State-Fullerton
20th Round-Carl Ratzlaff (21) SP U. of Arizona

2021 All Star Teams Announced

Can't help but notice the current and former Iron Pigs on the rosters. Ron Miller appears to be taking full advantage of the every day job.
My guess is Earl Shaw didn't make it because he's listed as a DH? Bug?

NEWS AND NOTES, AMATEURS: Made some initial offers to my draft picks, I fear I am going to miss out due to cash shortage and their demands, we'll see.
Also, the International Amateur Free Agents came out today, and I've made 2.2M in offers to 3 players, a Candian SP (16) a Canadian 3B (16) and a Dominican OF (16).

NEWS AND NOTES, AMATEURS: All three of the international guys have received higher offers. Michigan is on the 3B, and Corpus Christi is bidding on the pitcher and the OF. I've upped the ante a bit, but have little room left on the cap before the penalties start.

MINORS NEWS-Green Bay OF prospect David Brooks has, what I think is, the longest hitting streak in history, in any league. He hit in his 36th straight game today and is hitting .374 with a .508 OBP. The 23 year old was the 9th overall pick in 2016 out of Waukegan HS in Illinois.

MINORS NEWS-Mt Zion OF David Brooks extended his hitting streak with a 1st inning single today. Going 2-4 in their 12-5 win.

ORG NEWS-We've managed to sign 16 year old Canadian phenom Rene Ruiz, it took a 690K bonus to win the bidding. Alaska has entered into the bidding on the 3B, and LA is apparently now in on the Domincan OF'er.

WEEK 13 All Star break, and All Star Game

WEEK 13
RECORD: 4-0
OVERALL: 54-25 +3
RUNS SCORED: 569 (63 in 4 games!) 1st
RUNS AGAINST: 336 (17) 1st
OWNERS MOOD: Delighted (up from Very Happy)
FAN INTERST: 87/100
SCHEDULE: Off Day/All Star Game/Off Day/3 @ Michigan/1 vs Edmonton

6/21 Off Day
David Brooks is turning into a national sensation. His hitting streak reached 38 games with a 5th inning single, going 1-2 in their 8-3 win.

INJURY NEWS-Buffalo has lost ace Sixto Morales for the next 3 months with a bum shoulder. The 29 year old is coming off a 19-7 3.28 season and was 7-4 3.97 in 16 starts for the 1st place Bisons this year.

Our 2018 Supplemental pick (32nd overall) Brant Blanchard has a torn rotator cuff, and is out at least 8 months, if not more.

6/22 All Star Game Coastal League wins 4-3 on a Marcos Oginlara (LA) walk off 2B scoring Jimmy Rollins (PHI). David Walker (GB) MVP.
6/23 Off Day David Brooks had his hitting streak halted today, at 38 games.

TRADE NEWS-Dayton shipped 25 year old SP Ron Johnston (7-5 3.00 13 Starts) to New Hampshire for 26 year old SS Leland Kessler (.344-2-28 40 games)

Buffalo, clinging to 1st place by just a game, traded 27 year old IF Alfonso Andrade (.279-0-5 24 games) and 20 year old power prospect Will King to LA for 30 year old SP William Washington (9-2 4.08) and 698K in cash.

6/24 CHI 19 MICH 6
Shaw 3-4 3 runs 3 BB's 2 RBI's (64) Salinas 3-6 3 runs 2B (21) HR (17) 4 RBI's (67) Miranda 2-5 HR (8) 3 runs 4 RBI's (49) Jackson 2-4 HR (15) 4 RBI's (41) Ash 4-6 3 2B's (14) SB (19) Hall 4-3-0-0-2-3 65 minute delay in the 4th ends his day. Tucker 4 ER 1.1 IP (10.80 ERA)

ROSTER NEWS-Matt Tucker was optioned out toda, RH Luis Quinones was recalled. Still short a lefty, with 2 lefties I don't have much confidence in....

6/25 CHI 13 MICH 1
Chavez 2-4 2 3B's (3) 3 runs Salinas 2-5 HR (18) 3 RBI's (70) Collins 2-4 2 HR's (1 a GS) (21) 5 RBI's (61) SB (7) Martinez 7-4-1-1-1-8 W (11-2)
I have tweaked my lineup, starting yesterday. Moving Shaw to the 3 hole, Hudson to the 5 spot and Salinas cleanup (was Hudson, Shaw, Salinas) as well as moving Ash into the 9 hole and Jackson up to the 8th spot. 32 runs in 2 games, I think it's working?

GREAT GAMES- Carl Crawford went 5-5 and hit for the cycle in the Blizzards 10-5 in over Dayton.

AMATEUR NEWS-We are in a dogfight with Green Bay for the two amateur free agents. I am nearing the cap, and have made what is likely a last, or next to last offer to each. Both are approaching 1M in ask.

6/26 CHI 8 MICH 5
Chavez 3-5 Shaw 2-5 HR (23) Jackson 2-4 HR (16) 4 RBI's (45) Lee 7-5-5-4-2-4 W (9-2) Cruz SV (14)
6/27 CHI 23 EDM 5
Chavez 4-6 4 runs 2B (21) HR (20) 6 RBI's (63) Blakeway 4-6 2B (18) 2 3B's (7) HR (1) 6 RBI's (37) 12 total bases Hudson HR (23) Coates 3-6 3 runs 3 RBI's Morgan 6-8-2-2-2-7 W (7-2)

AMATEUR NEWS-I am dropping out of the bidding on Alfonso Lopez, the 16 year old Domincan OF. To stay in on Lalonde (the 16 year old Canadian 3B) I had to go higher as Philly has entered the bidding. Boston jumped in on Lopez and while I could stay in, the penalties for overspending are stiff enough, and my budget already with enough issues, I had to pick. Add to that the impasse I am now at with my #1 pick and I'm unhappy with the work for amateurs this year. He is not going to sign my offer, as I am about 2M shy of what he's asking but I've been told the draft budget is a locked in number. So I'll hope for a great pool next year and will have the #3 again.

WEEK 13 SUMMARY
FL POTW-Carl Crawford (GB) 10-19 3 HR's 8 RBI's (.267-8-39)
