TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS November 20, 1946
VAN BUREN LEADS JETS PAST UNBEATEN BEARS It was beginning to look like no one could beat the Chicago Bears after they won their first 10 games of the season and outscored their opponents on average by more than 2 touchdowns a game. No one that is until Steve *Van Buren entered Soldier Field. Van Buren almost singlehandedly carried the New York Jets past the Bears 24-13. The third year back out of LSU ran for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also returned 3 kicks for an average of 25 yards and to top it all of he recovered teammate Korey Tennell's fumble late in the third quarter to keep what would be the winning touchdown drive alive. Oh, and he caught a pair of passes for 37 yards as well. The performance gives Van Buren 1173 yards rushing for the season, just 21 less than league leader Bruce Jones of Kansas City. He has already surpassed his total yards gained in 16 games last season and is just 224 shy of surpassing his career high set as a rookie. As much as Van Buren carried the Jets you have to give a large dose of credit to the New York secondary which baffled Bears QB Sid *Luckman all day. Luckman endured his worst start of his career, completing just 15 of 34 for a season low 186 yards. The 4 time allstar was also picked off twice after throwing just 4 interceptions in the first 10 games. EAGLES FAIL TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BEARS LOSS The Philadelphia Eagles missed a great chance to move into a first place tie in the NFC with Chicago. The Eagles were upended 18-10 by lowly Jacksonville. What hurt the Eagles most was the absence of workhorse running back Harley Mitchell. Back-up Jimmy Berton gained just 21 yards on 12 carries and QB Doug Bass faced too much pressure to mount any kind of offense for Philadelphia. Good news for the Eagles is that Mitchell is expected to be ready for next week's game with Detroit. QB Ken Neal, who has outperformed Bass this season, also sat out the game but should be ready to play next week. Stacey Bennett kicked four field goals while QB Tommy Bledsoe completed 19-of-26 passes for 250 yards to lead the Jags. Bledsoe's performance was even more impressive considering the pressure he was under all game. He was sacked twice and had Eagles in his face all game. Most notable for Philadelphia was LB Ed Leblanc, who had 13 tackles, 1 sack, 4 qb pressures and an interception. AFC LEADERS POST VICTORIES Unlike the NFC where the top two clubs both lost, the AFC leaders each posted victories last week. The Denver Broncos improved to 9-2 with a 45-10 pounding of the Seahawks in Seattle. Broncos running back Oscar Hartings ran for 131 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hartings also caught a touchdown pass and gained 103 yards receiving in the game. Broncos QB Jay Cason was knocked out of the game in the third quarter but he should be healthy for next week's game in Jacksonville. After missing two starts with an injury QB Bob *Waterfield was back under center for the Detroit Lions and he nearly led his club to an upset win over New England. In the end the Patriots prevailed 28-24 thanks to a 14 yard Bob Irvin to Jim Houser touchdown pass with under a minute to play. Irvin threw for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns. The win improves the Pats record to 8-2-1. Waterfield looked good despite being slowed by a lingering ankle injury, passing for 234 yards and one major. Detroit RB Fred Johnson had his best game since the season opener, running for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In other action Green Bay took advantage of 4 Buffalo turnovers to beat the Bills 28-19. Don *Hutson had 7 catches including a touchdown grab to lead the Packers.while CB Rashod Dawson had 2 picks. Tuffy *Leemans ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns to propel Arizona past San Diego 25-20. Washington, still using a backup QB with Sammy *Baugh sidelined, beat Tennessee 16-10. Wayne *Miller caught a pair of touchdown passes from Mike Washington to lead the Redskins. San Francisco outlasted Oakland 24-19 to win the Battle of the Bay Area. TE Walter Van Galder had another strong game, albeit in a losing effort. Van Galder, who was a second team AFC allstar a year ago, continued to show he is the best receiving TE in the game with a 5 catch, 117 yard effort on Sunday. Tony Ellis ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns plus he added a touchdown reception to lead Cleveland past New Orleans 42-30. Jeff McDonald started his second straight for the Browns and threw for 315 yards and a pair of touchdowns. St Louis beat Kansas City 27-10 behind a 128 yard rushing effort from Mike Largent. Ulish Groce, the undrafted QB who was a cinderella story for the Chiefs up until signing a huge extension in the offseason, threw 3 more interceptions. Groce has tossed just 5 touchdown passes compared with 18 picks this season. Chiefs RB Bruce Jones gained 110 yards on the ground and continues to lead the NFL in that category. A last minute Woody Brooks to Ryan Burns touchdown pass gave Miami a 24-20 win over Minnesota. Brooks threw 3 touchdowns in the game. LB Li Madison returned a fumble 87 yards for the winning score as Dallas beat Indianapolis 28-21. Pittsburgh overcame a 20-7 halftime deficiet to rally past Tampa 27-20. Rookie Elmer Angsman gained 89 yards rushing for the Steelers. Cincinnati embarrassed the Falcons in Atlanta to the tune of 42-13. Bill *Dudley ran for 3 touchdowns and caught a Ken Smith pass for a 4th score. Dudley gained a combined 165 yards rushing and receiving. It was his first start since being injured against Tennessee 4 weeks ago. Baltimore beat Carolina 13-10 on a 46-yard overtime field goal from Leonard Allen. The only Ravens touchdown came on a 53 yard punt return from Don Horn with 5 minutes remaining in the game. The New York Giants found a way once again to lose a game. The Giants led Houston 17-3 at the half but lost their 9th in a row after the Texans rallied for 17 unanswered 2nd half points to win 20-17. After getting picked off twice in the first half, Houston QB Vaughan Diedrick settled down after the break and finished the day with 272 yards passing including a 24 yard touchdown strike to Mel Ours. The other Texan touchdown came on a 44 yard interception return by CB Ollie Berzinski that tied the game at 17 early in the final quarter. The Texans won it on a 49 yard field goal from Laverne Bethea with 9 seconds to play. COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP TSN COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 20 Here is the new Top 20 after this weekends action. The Bulldogs will host rival Georgia Tech while the Vols travel to Vanderbilt. If Georgia beats Georgia Tech we will likely see a 1-vs-2 showdown with Army and the Bulldogs meeting in the Sugar Bowl. Tennessee could go to the Cotton Bowl to face the Southwest Conference winner. Code:

Since there is no official affiliation with a bowl North Carolina will likely have a number of options for their bowl appearance. A good bet is the Oil Bowl against perhaps Arkansas. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE ROUNDUP
CANADIENS IN FUNK - DROP THREE STRAIGHT GAMES After losing just one of their first 10 games to start the season the Montreal Canadiens have dropped 3 straight and now trail the surging Detroit Red Wings for top spot in the National Hockey League. The Canadiens opened the week with a scoreless tie against the New York Rangers. Bill Durnan made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season but was upstaged by Ranger netminder Chuck Rayner who turned aside all 48 Montreal shots. The next night it was rookie Gordie Howe's turn to shine against the Habs. Howe scored his first career hat trick and added an assist as Detroit beat Montreal 5-2. Durnan had his worst game of the season in the loss. Things did not get any better for the Canadiens who finished the week with a 3-1 loss in Toronto and a 4-2 defeat in Boston. The Red Wings beat lowly Chicago 2-1 on Sunday to move a point ahead of the Habs and into top spot. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE BOSTON BRAVES 1946 was another bad season for the sad sack franchise that is the Boston Braves. The franchise has not won a pennant since 1906, heck they have only finished higher than 5th once since 1933. This season the Braves managed to hit a new low, losing a franchise record 98 games and marking the 5th straight season their win total has declined from the previous year. How bad has it been? Only twice since 1919 have they finished over .500. Bright spots? Believe it or not there were a couple. 25 year old rookie pitcher Warren Spahn looks like the real deal. Spahn was 15-18 with a 3.57 era and received serious consideration for the rookie of the year award. The only other bright spot is that the Braves will get to select first in the newly implemented amateur player draft (EDITORS NOTE - I decided to go with a draft from now on because it will add far more interest to offseason articles.) Other key Braves include 33 year old firstbaseman Rudy York (.206,21,72), ex-Yankee Phil Rizzuto (.276,3,22) at shortstop, and a decent catcher in 30 year old Phil Masi (.214,4,39). 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE BROOKLYN DODGERS After two sub-.500 seasons the Brooklyn Dodgers enjoyed an 84 win campaign and even though they were never in the pennant race there is cause for excitement. 27 year old outfielder Pete Reiser (.314,12,95) was named National League MVP and he heads a solid cast of hitters entering their prime. Shortstop Pee Wee Reese (.285,8,62) and rookie second baseman Jackie Robinson who is poised to become the first Negro to play in the major leagues give the Dodgers a solid infield. (EDITOR'S NOTE - I made Robinson exempt from the draft and automatically assigned him to the Dodgers because it did not seem right having him play elsewhere.) 24 year old outfielder Carl Furillo (.271,0,4) looked good in a brief September call-up and is likely here to stay. Veterans Goody Rosen (.289,7,64), Zeke Bonura (.249,9,78) and Stan Hack (.292,6,42) add leadership. 34 year old Mickey Haefner (21-13, 2.91) enjoyed the best season of his career while Don Black (17-13, 2.94) and Dick Mauney (16-17, 3,62) add depth to the rotation. The farm system looks good with young pitchers Rex Barney and Ralph Branca poised to make the jump to the big leagues but the Dodgers best prospect may be first baseman Ed Stevens. Outlook for 1947. This is a club that could contend for the pennant if either Barney or Branca can deliver in the rotation. BOXING BEAT Billed as a night of future heavyweight contenders, the city of Philadelphia was treated to a fine evening of boxing over the weekend. It featured 4 bouts involving fighters on the verge of being considered one of the top 10 heavyweights in the world. The main event saw New Jersey native Archie McBride stop Tami Mauriello with a fifth round knockout. The fight pretty much spells the end of the line for Mauriello who was destroyed 2 months ago in his hometown of New York in a title fight against World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis. McBride improves to 16-7 and is ranked 11th in the world. In other bouts Embrell Davidson of Detroit improved to 24-6 with 21 knockouts after stopping fellow Detroiter O'Dell Riley in the 14th round of their 15 rounder. Veteran Archie Moore improved to 16-6 after a split decision victory over Jack Walker (19-3). It was a real blow for Columbus native Walker who appeared poised to take the next step in to the upper level of heavyweight contenders. Pat Valentino narrowly defeated Henry Flakes by majority decision. Valentino, a San Francisco native, is 13-9-2 and did not do nearly enough against Flakes to warrent much future consideration in the division. In other heavyweight action Alberto Santiago Lovell defeated Cesar Brion with a 12th round TKO to win the Argentine Heavyweight Title in Rosario, Argentina. The win improves Lovell's record to 18-7-1 while Brion falls to 7-10-2. Lovell is ranked 23rd in the World in his weight class. In Germany Walter Neusel improved to 20-6 as he defended his German title against Hein Ten-Hoff. Neusel is likely in line to fight Englishman Bruce Woodcock for the European title but neither could hold a candle to the many great American fighters in the division right now. CANADIAN FOOTBALL NEWS ARGOS AND BLUE BOMBERS TO MEET IN GREY CUP The Toronto Argonauts will meet the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 34th Grey Cup championship game which will be held in Toronto next week. The Argos advanced with a 23-7 win over ORFU champion Toronto Balmy Beach. The Bombers lost 14-10 in Calgary on Saturday but won their 2 game total point Western Football title by a 27-10 score. The defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argos will be looking to hoist the trophy for the 6th time. Winnipeg has won the trophy 3 times with the most recent victory coming in 1941. The Argos hammered the Bombers 35-0 in last years game which was also held in Toronto. STATS AND STANDINGS NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE Code:

SPECIAL PRESS RELEASE
TRIPLE CROWN WILL RECEIVE TSN COVERAGE TigerFan's Sporting News has announced that it will start to cover horse racing's most prestigous events beginning in the spring. The Kentucky Derby, the first jewel of the Triple Crown, will be our inagural event and it will take place in May. We will also file reports on the Preakness and Belmont Stakes events. We are a year away from Citation's triple crown winning season of 1948 but 1947 still promises some excitement. Among the favourites will be Phalanx, with 1945 Derby winner Eddie Arcaro on board, Jet Pilot the real life Derby winner of 1947 and Faultless who is owned by two-time Derby winner Calumet Farm. The Background I will be using a freeware game called "Down the Stretch" created by Brien Martin. Here is a link to his site for anyone interested. http://www.geocities.com/aslplayer63...mes/index.html The game comes with fictional horses but after watching a replay of the 1947 Derby and doing a fair bit of research I believe I have acceptable ratings for the horses involved in the 3 races. A little more tweaking on the ratings may be necessary but I am close to what I want with them. I believe horse racing was a major part of the sports scene in this era so I felt it was important to have it represented. That leaves college basketball and the Olympic games as the only major events not yet included in this dynasty. As a side note the issues will probably come a little less quickly right now. The basketball games are being played out by hand using a dice game so it takes about 10 minutes per game to play which slows things down a little. Hockey is also a little more time consuming as I have to manually copy all of the stats for both sports into a spreadsheet. I am also focusing on getting my fictional Salt Lake City Bees dynasty going again. Feel free to post any questions on a particular athlete, team or sport. Also any feedback on how I can improve this is much appreciated.

LOL. Well, the history of baseball stuff is old hat now. There are plenty of them (and many that are quite good) so I had to come up with something different....

Volume 1 Issue 22 Monday November 27, 1946
TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : November 27, 1946
COLLINS AND PLANK MAKE HALL OF FAME Pitchers Ray Collins and Eddie Plank can now each add one more footnote to their outstanding major league careers - Hall of Famer. The two hurlers who combined for 10 pitcher of the year awards each received just over the mimimum 126 votes necessary for induction. The total number of Hall of Famers now swells to 15, including 7 pitchers. Collins, who won 6 pitcher of the year awards and was instrumental in the Red Sox 9 pennants and 6 World Series titles during his 15 year career, led all candidates with 130 votes. He began his career in 1909 at the age of 22. He struggled through an 8-9 season and it would be 3 years before his career blossomed. And blossom it did. Collins won at least 21 games and never lost more than 12 each season between 1912 and 1922. He won a major league record 10 postseason games and finished his career in 1923 with a 326-139 record. Plank finished with one vote less than Collins. A 4 time American League pitcher of the year and 9 time allstar, Plank spent his entire career with the Athletics. 5 times he led his league in wins and 3 times had the best era. He was 3-3 in World Series action but never played for a winner. His career era of 2.45 is the 6th lowest alltime. He also ranks 11th alltime in strikeouts with 2106 and is 14th in career wins with 323. Among those just missing induction was Nap Lajoie who once again fell short. Many have long argued that Lajoie should have been among the initial group of inductees 13 years ago but here once again Lajoie is left wondering if his name will ever be called. Smokey Joe Wood, Ed Walsh and Zach Wheat all fell less than 15 votes shy of 75% needed for induction. Anyone appearing on less than 10% of the ballots will be removed from consideration for next year. 9 time allstar outfielder Chick Hafey, who spent his entire 18 year career with the Cardinals, heads the list of players who will be eligible for the first time next year. Code:

The biggest reason for the turnaround - the offense or rather lack thereof. In 1945 the Cubs were 3rd in runs scored and 5th in batting average in the major leagues while in 1946 they fell to 15th in each of those categories. It is hard to single one player out for the fall as it clearly was a case of virtually every regular having an off-year at the same time. The good news is most of the players are young enough that they could all just as easily have a career year next season. Catcher Ken O'Dea (.266,13,67) saw his average dip nearly .050 but he will be just 34 next season and is being counted on to regain the form he showed during the pennant winning seasons when he made back to back allstar teams. 41 year old Don Hurst lost the first base job to 27 year old rookie Eddie Waitkus (.307,1,22) in August and Waitkus appears to have a bright future. The rest of the infield remains the same as during the pennant winning seasons: 30 year old Eddie Stanky (.240,1,32) at second, 29 year old Lenny Merullo (.226,0,42) at short and third baseman Harland Clift (.206,15,69) who will be 34 on opening day. All 3 are coming off the worst season of their careers offensively. Outfielder Bill Nicholson (.232,18,72) still displayed power but the 32 year old saw his average plummet by .054. 34 year old Augie Galan (.259,4,59) and 33 year old Joe Marty (.243,8,61) round out the lineup. However, they will be pressed for playing time by 26 year old Andy Pafko, who hit .293 in AAA and appears ready for the Show. Pitching is the Cubs strength as they again finished in the top four in earned runs allowed. Starters Vern Olsen (15-16, 2.93), Paul Erickson (16-17, 3.39), Hank Wyse (16-16, 3.84) and Ken Raffensberger (14-13, 3.41) return and all are between 29 and 31 years of age. 26 year old Johnny Schmitz (3-5, 4.05) and 29 year old Ed Head (2-1, 1.55) will press for a spot in the rotation. Head in particular is an interesting case. He went 21-14 for the Dodgers in 1942 and was named NL Rookie of the Year before a terrible start the following season prompted his being traded twice. He did win 19 games for the Cubs in 1944 but has not been able to crack the rotation since then. 1947 OUTLOOK - The Cubs are a strong team and if the hitters can perform like they did 2 years ago there is no reason why Wrigley Field won't be an exciting place to be in come late September. 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE CINCINNATI REDS Pennant fever returned to Cincinnati last season for the first time since 1926. In the end the Reds finished two games back of Pittsburgh but their 89 wins was the most since they last celebrated a championship 20 years ago. The hamstring injury to Joe Dimaggio that cost the slugger nearly all of September may well have been the difference in the pennant race. The 32 year old Dimaggio is clearly not the player he was in his early days with the Yankees before suffering a series of injuries but he can still mash the ball and has the uncanny ability to hit the big one at the right time. Dimaggio (.226,21,77) saw his average drop to a career low but he hit 12 homers in the 39 games just proceeding his injury to spark the Reds pennant run. Ford Garrison (.310,10,57) and Joe Medwick (.323,11,70) will be 31 and 35 respectively as the 1947 season opens and both are coming off strong seasons. 34 year old first baseman Johnny Mize (.242,19,86) is still productive and 34 year old second sacker Alex Kampouris (.323,10,66) fashioned career best numbers. Veteran Pete Coscarart (.259,6,57) at short and 3B Grady Hatton (.250,8,54) round out the infield. Hatton is just 24 and is expected to improve upon a decent rookie season. 32 year old catcher Frankie Hayes (.223,11,62) wilted in the late summer after a strong start to his season. The pitching staff in a quick glance looks good. But dig a little deeper and you can see why the Reds are a little worried. 30 year old Johnny Hutchings (21-6, 3.00) had everything go his way in his first full season as a starter. However, the jury is out on whether or not he can duplicate those numbers. Arnold Carter (18-15, 3.14) is far less of a concern. The 28 year old has improved each of his 3 seasons in the Reds rotation. Howie Fox (17-15, 4.96) is another question mark. The 26 year old had a far better record than his showing as a rookie two seasons ago but his era ballooned and poses some worry for the Reds front office. Rookie Evell Blackwell (12-15, 3.75) appears to have a bright future but can the 23 year old repeat his freshman performance? 24 year old Johnny Hetki (3-2, 2.67) led the National League with 11 saves. 1947 OUTLOOK - Everything went right for the Reds in 1946 until Dimaggio got hurt. Even then they nearly pulled off their first pennant in 20 years. The bet this season is things won't fall in to place quite as easily and the Reds will be a slightly above .500 ballclub. 3rd or 4th place at best. continued

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
ARMY FINISHES PERFECT SEASON: DECLINES BOWL OFFER Army easily handled longtime for Navy 29-10 over the weekend at Philadelphia's Municipal Stadium but the bigger news came after the game when it was made official that Army would not accept the Sugar Bowl's invitation to play against Georgia. It has been a longtime standard that Army does not participate in postseason games but with WWII over and the excitement a number 1 vs number 2 matchup could have provided many were expecting the Cadets to accept the invitation. Head Coach Earl Blaik broke the news to the media immediately following the win over Navy. TSN COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 20 Here is the new Top 20 after the final weekend of the season (last weeks ranking in brackets) 1- Army (1) -- 10-0 won 29-10 at Navy 2. Georgia (2) -- 10-0 beat Georgia Tech 37-24 co-SEC winner 3. UCLA (3) -- 10-0 beat Nebraska 37-13 win PCC Title 4- Notre Dame (4) -- 8-1 beat USC 31-7 only loss to Army 5. Michigan (5) -- 8-1 off won Western Conference Title only loss to Army 6. North Carolina (6) -- 10-0 beat Virginia 22-13 won Southern Conference Title 7. Tennessee (8)-- 9-1 beat Vanderbilt 16-0 co-SEC champs only loss to North Carolina 8. Rice (9) - 9-0-1 beat Baylor 21-7 win SWC title only blemish a tie with SMU 9. Alabama (10) -- 9-2 beat Mississippi State 24-14 losses to Georgia and Tenn. 10. Yale (7) -- 9-0 off Finished as top Ivy League school although technically all are independants 11 William & Mary (12)-- 9-1 beat Richmond 17-7 only loss to North Carolina 12. Pennsylvania (11)-- 7-1 beat Cornell 21-14 only loss to Army 13 North Carolina State (14)-- 9-1 beat Maryland 38-6 loss was against Wake Forest 14. Arkansas (13) - 6-2-2 tied 6-6 at Tulsa 15. Illinois (15)-- 6-2-1 off 2nd in Western Conference losses to Notre Dame and Michigan 16 Rutgers (17)-- 8-0-1 season over tie was against Harvard 17. Oklahoma (16)-- 7-2-1 dissappointing 30-30 tie at Oklahoma State Won Big 6 18 Hardin-Simmons (nr)-- 10-0 beat Texas Tech 28-24. Won Border Conference title 19 Kentucky (19)-- 7-3 season over all 3 losses to SEC rivals 20 Tulsa (nr) -- 7-2-1 tied then #13 Arkansas 6-6. Won MVC title. losses to Detroit Mercy and Tx Tech Dropping out of top 20 Southern California (18)-- 5-3-1 lost 31-7 at Notre Dame tied for second in PCC Mississippi State (20)-- 7-3 lost at #10 Alabama 24-14 all 3 losses to SEC rivals BOWL MATCHUPS DECIDED Army's refusal to accept a Bowl bid sent a real shockwave through the entire bowl picture. However once the dust settled there will definately be some intriguing matchups even though there will not be a true number 1 vs number 2. With Army out of the picture number 4 Notre Dame decided to pass on the Orange Bowl and take the Cadets spot in the Sugar Bowl against number 2 Georgia. If the Bulldogs beat the Irish it will be interesting to see if that can vault them past idle Army into the number 1 ranking. Other games involving top 10 clubs including the Rose Bowl which features unbeaten number 3 UCLA against the 5th ranked Michigan Wolverines. #7 Tennessee will meet #8 Rice in the Cotton Bowl. 6th ranked North Carolina was a team being heavily wooed and with the Southern Conference not having a direct affiliation with a bowl the Tar Heels opted for the Orange Bowl against Big 6 champ #17 Oklahoma. The Oil Bowl should also be a good matchup with 9th ranked Alabama playing 11th ranked William & Mary. Only 3 top 20 teams will not be participating in a bowl game. Army and #10 Yale both declined while 19th ranked Kentucky was not eligible because of a rule allowing just 3 teams per conference to participate in a bowl game. The SEC is already represented by Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. LSU, despite barely missing the top 20, would likely have been selected ahead of Kentucky had a 4th SEC school been eligible. The only Bowl game undecided is the Raisin Bowl which features the champions from the Border and Mountain States Conferences. Hardin-Simmons went 10-0 and won the Border Conference title but the Mountain States will not be decided until next week's game between Utah State and Denver is completed. Utah State can not win the conference but if they beat Denver than the title will go to Utah. THE BOWL PICTURE SUNDAY DECEMBER 24, 1946 CIGAR BOWL - Greensboro #16 Rutgers vs #13 North Carolina State MONDAY DECEMBER 25, 1946 HARBOR BOWL - San Diego Nevada vs Stanford SATURDAY DECEMBER 30, 1946 RAISIN BOWL - Fresno #18 Hardin-Simmons vs Denver or Utah SUN BOWL - El Paso #15 Illinois vs Texas ALAMO BOWL - San Antonio #20 Tulsa vs New Mexico MONDAY JANUARY 1, 1946 OIL BOWL - Houston #11 William & Mary vs #9 Alabama GATOR BOWL - Jacksonville #12 Pennsylvania vs #14 Arkansas ORANGE BOWL - Miami #17 Oklahoma vs #6 North Carolina SUGAR BOWL - New Orleans #2 Georgia vs #4 Notre Dame COTTON BOWL - Dallas #8 Rice vs #7 Tennessee ROSE BOWL - Pasadena #3 UCLA vs #5 Michigan NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUNDUP PLAYOFF PICTURE STARTING TO COME IN FOCUS With just 4 weeks remaining in the 1946 National Football League season the playoff picture is beginning to clear up. In the NFC the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles have already clinched berths while things are looking very good for the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. In the AFC only the Denver Broncos have clinched a playoff berth so far, but the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs all look to be in good shape. In this weekend's games the Philadelphia Eagles clinched a playoff berth with a 34-26 win over a game Detroit Lions squad. Ken Neal returned from injury to throw 3 touchdown passes for the Eagles while RB Harley Mitchell, also back from injury, ran for 82 yards and caught 4 passes for 67 more. Losing QB Bob *Waterfield had another strong day for the Lions, throwing for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Chicago Bears rebounded from last week's loss against the Jets by hammering Washington 44-24. Sid *Luckman threw 4 touchdown passes as the Bears clinched the NFC North Division title. Tampa beat Seattle 24-15 despite a breakout game from Seahawks RB Marion *Motley. Motley ran for a career best 124 yards. All of Tampa's scoring came in the second quarter including a pair of Steve Quayle touchdown passes and a 77 yard interception return from Jim Plum. 5 turnovers cost Dallas bigtime against Minnesota. The Vikings won 31-27 despite Dallas having a huge advantage in total yards and time of possession. Cowboys QB Doug Shroeder was picked off twice and fumbled once. Dallas running back Raymond Cash ran for 127 yards. New Orleans beat St Louis 35-18 to take over sole possession of top spot in the NFC South at 6-6. Todd Berger ran for 101 yards and scored 3 touchdowns to lead the Saints. San Francisco and Arizona both won to remain tied atop the NFC West at 8-4. The 49ers beat Atlanta 30-7 while the Cardinals needed overtime to top Carolina 16-10. Trent Feeney's second touchdown pass of the game, a 49 yarder to WR Anthony Green accounted for the winning score. The New York Giants finally ended their losing streak at 9 games as they beat Green Bay 13-9. Michael Lake ran for 138 yards for New York while the Giant defense completely dominated the Packers. In the AFC Denver became the first team to clinch a playoff berth with a 13-3 victory over Jacksonville. LB Seth Walker had an incredible game for the Broncos, picking up a pair of sacks and recording 11 tackles. Aside from RB Oscar Hartings who gained 100 yards on the ground and another 49 receiving, the Broncos offense did not do a lot. New England improved to 9-2-1 with a 24-17 win over Pittsburgh. Bob Irvin tossed 3 touchdown passes and threw for 281 yards for the Pats who turned all 3 Steelers turnovers into points. Pittsburgh falls to 7-5 and a game out of first in the AFC North. Cleveland has sole possession of top spot in the North after laying a 31-10 beating on the 6-6 New York Jets. Art Basnight ran for 111 yards and Wayne *Millner had two sacks to lead the Browns. After such an incredible performance in upsetting Chicago a week ago, the Jets looked like a completely different - and uninspired - club. Steve *Van Buren was held to just 44 yards rushing and he had a fumble returned for a Cleveland touchdown. League rushing leader Stacey Jolley scored 3 touchdowns and ran for a career high 250 yards to lead Miami past Baltimore 38-21. Jolley's 250 yards are just 18 shy of the single game record set by Antowain Anderson of Atlanta a year ago. The defending champion Ravens fall to 5-6-1 and are looking like they will not be making a postseason appearance this year. Kansas City is in the thick of the wild card hunt at 7-5 after beating Tennessee 30-17. The Chiefs won despite 3 interceptions from QB Ulish Groce. However, the Chiefs certainly did not have a monopoly on turnovers. Manfred Gayle of the Titans was picked off twice and he fumbled once. Titan kick returner Flip McMillan fumbled 3 times. The Titans are also 7-5 and 2 games ahead of Jacksonville and Indianapolis atop the AFC South. Johnny Cushing ran for 106 yards and had 6 catches for 72 yards to help Oakland past Houston 30-23. At 5-7 the Raiders are likely out of the postseason picture. Indianapolis upended San Diego 27-6. James Harris had 10 tackles and an interception to lead the Colts defense to it's best showing of the season. Buffalo remains alive in the wild card hunt at 5-6-1 after beatint Chicnnati 13-6. Bills QB Leon Allen connected with WR Thomas Glover for a 5 yard touchdown pass on Buffalo's opening possession to account for the only major on the day. Bills CB Greg Fletcher had 2 sacks and forced a pair of Cincinnati fumbles. There are a number of games next week that can make a huge difference in the playoff picture including New Orleans (6-6) at Pittsburgh (7-5) and Arizona (8-4) at San Francisco (8-4) but the biggest matchup may be a potential title game preview as New England (9-2-1) entertains the Chicago Bears (11-1). BOXING ROUNDUP BOB MONTGOMERY TAKES STEP CLOSER TO LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE Promising lightweight Bob Montgomery improved to 10-0 with a victory in his hometown of Philadelphia over his toughest opponent to date. Montgomery looked to be in trouble early on against Australian Vic Patrick until he caught the Aussie with a devasting right in the 4th round that sent him to the canvas. Patick, ranked 11th in the World entering the fight recovered from the knockdown but he never did take control of the fight again. Montgomery won by unanimous decision dropping Patrick's record to 11-3. The win moves Montgomery in to the role of number 1 contender for champion Ike Williams' World Lightweight belt. It is expected Williams and Montgomery will meet late next year for the title. Despite the loss Patrick showed enough to move up into the top 10 fighters in the division. In other boxing news reigning British middleweight champ Randy Turpin added the European Middleweight belt to his collection after outpointing Frenchman Edouard Tenet in London England over the weekend. Turpin improves to 22-3 and is ranked XX overall while Tenet's record falls to 13-6-1. If his career continues along the same path expect Turpin to get a shot a World Middleweight champ Jake Lamotta in the next year or two. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE RED WINGS STRETCH LEAD WITH 3 STRAIGHT WINS The Detroit Red Wings have opened up an 8 point lead atop the National Hockey League standings after three straight wins last week. Meanwhile, Montreal dropped to a third place tie after going winless in their last 7 games. The Wings started a busy 4 game week with an uninspired effort in a 1-1 tie with lowly Chicago. for the Black Hawks it was just their third point of the season and Chicago's goal was scored by, who else, Max Bentley. Bentley is tied with Rocket Richard for the scoring lead with 19 points and he has been involved in all but one of Chicago's 20 goals this season. Thursday the Wings beat the Rangers at the Olympia by a 5-4 score. Sid Abel led the Red Wings with a pair of goals while Grant Warwick had two for the visitors. On Saturday the Red Wings held off a late charge from Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens to beat the Leafs 5-4. Howie Meeker had a hat trick for the Leafs while stay at-home defense Bill Quakenbush equalled his season point total with 3 helpers for the Detroiters. On Sunday, the Wings again beat the Leafs. This time it was a 5-3 score on the ice at The Olympia. Just as was the case the previous evening 5 different Red Wings beat struggling Toronto netminder Turk Broda. Speaking of struggling, the Montreal Canadiens continue to plummet in the standings. The Habs have lost 5 in a row and have just 1 tie in their last 7 games after starting the season 7-0-1. The Canadiens lost a pair of 2-1 games last week, to the Rangers and Boston. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA PROVIDENCE STEAMROLLING OPPOSITION The Providence Steamrollers, riding a 7 game winning streak, are the hottest club in the BAA. The Steamrollers own the best record in the league thanks to a balanced offense led by guards Donald Martin and Ernie Calverley. The two are each averaging over 13 points a game but the offense is not restricted to the backcourt. Center Hank Beenders is averaging nearly 11 points a game and forward Earl Shannon contributes just over 12 points. The bench is the Steamrollers weak spot but with the current level of production from the starters it has hardly hurt the team. Joe Fulks of Philadelphia set a record for the young league by pouring in 32 points against Chicago on November 23rd. It was a single game record but did little to help the Warriors on that night as Chicago outscored Philadelphia 82-59. Fulks is leading the league in scoring but his Warriors have played just 4 games so far. continued

TORONTO ARGOS WIN GREY CUP IN OVERTIME The Toronto Argonauts defeated Winnipeg 17-14 on an overtime field goal to win the Grey Cup, emblematic of football supremacy north of the border. The Argos led 7-0 at the half but Winnipeg tied the game in the third quarter and then took a 14-7 lead early in the fourth. The Argos tied things a few minutes later to send the game into extra time. It marks the second year in a row the Argos beat Winnipeg to win the Cup. Last year Toronto won in convincing fashion, scoring a 35-0 shutout. This year's game in Toronto was much closer but it still marks the Bombers 4th Grey Cup defeat in the last 5 years. Winnipeg last won the Grey Cup in 1941 when the Bombers trimmed the Ottawa Rough Riders 18-16. GOLF BYRON NELSON NAMED TSN GOLFER OF THE YEAR To no one's surprise Byron Nelson has been named the golfer of the year by TigerFan's Sporting News. The Fort Worth, Texas native won two majors to bring his career total to 6. It did not quite compare statistically to the run he had in 1945 when he won 11 consecutive tournaments and a total of 19 tour events. The performance has been disparaged by some because most of the other top professional golfers were serving in World War II. (Nelson wasn't qualified for military service because he had hemophilia.) His win in the British Open and the PGA Championship certainly goes a long way towards erasing some of that doubt. The British Open win became a marathon as Nelson and Australian Peter Thomson needed just an extra round to break their tie but also 5 sudden-death playoff holes. Nelson birdied the 5th playoff hole to claim the Claret Jug for the first time in his career. He won the match-play PGA title at the Portland Golf Club by beating Dick Burton 2 and 1 in the final. His toughest match came in the quarterfinals when he needed an extra hole to top Jimmy Demaret. Nelson finished tied for 5th in the Masters 5 strokes behind winner Ben Hogan. He missed the cut for the US Open. In other golf notes captains Ben Hogan and Henry Cotton are expected to name their rosters for the 1947 Ryder Cup which will be held at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon. It will be the first Cup challenge since the Americans upset the British on their home turf in 1937. In the five events prior to that the home side had won on each occassion. The first event was held in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1927 after a trophy was donated by Samuel Ryder. The United States leads the series 4 wins to two. The event will return to the prewar format of being contested every second year. The 1949 event will be held at the Ganton Golf Club in Ganton, England. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : December 4, 1946
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE VAN BUREN SETS SINGLE GAME RUSHING RECORD New York Jets back Steve *Van Buren set a single game NFL rushing record by gaining 271 yards on 25 carries as the Jets beat Detroit 14-3. Van Buren, who had touchdown runs of 99 and 76 yards, also had 4 catches for 25 yards and returned a pair of kickoffs for 42 yards. The previous single game rushing record was 268 yards set by rookie Antowain Anderson of Atlanta last year against Tampa. The win improves the Jets record to 7-6 and keeps them in the AFC playoff race. The Lions fall to 4-9 with the loss. SAN FRANCISCO TAKES CONTROL OF NFC WEST The San Francisco 49ers took over sole possession of first place in the NFC West after a convincing 20-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Tempe. The win improves the 49ers to 9-4, one game ahead of the second place Cardinals. Koy Harris threw a pair of second quarter touchdowns to account for the majority of the San Francisco offense. Harris passed for 208 yards and did not throw an interception. He was also sacked just once as the 49ers controlled the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. Niner's defensive lineman Joey Griese was on a first name basis with Arizona QB Trent Feeney - sacking him 4 times. In all the 49ers sacked Feeney 5 times and pressured him all game. For Griese it was a rare glimpse back at the form that made him a 4 time first-team allstar. The former South Dakota standout averaged 11 sacks a season during those 4 years but notched just 3 in a terrible season last year. He got off to a slow start again this year but with 6 sacks in his last 4 games he appears to finally be out of his slump. The 49ers face a tough test next week when they travel to Denver to meet the 11-2 Broncos. Arizona visits 8-5 Kansas City. BRONCOS HAVE FIRM CONTROL OF AFC HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE The Denver Broncos imrpoved to 11-2 and are in the driver's seat in the race for home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Oscar Hartings ran for 104 yards and gained another 49 receiving to help Denver beat the St Louis Rams 18-7. The Denver defense held St Louis in check all game - limiting the Rams to just 169 yards total offense. The Broncos defense forced a couple of turnovers and recorded a sack when Seth Walker sacked Rams QB Rod Dugas in the endzone. New England failed to keep pace as the Pats fell to 9-3-1 after a 27-13 loss against a determined Chicago Bears club. Sid *Luckman snapped a 13-13 tie with a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes. Luckman had another big game, throwing for 317 yards. EAGLES AND REDSKINS BOTH SUFFER OVERTIME LOSSES No changes in the NFC race as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins suffered road overtime losses. The Eagles were upended by AFC South leader Tennessee 16-10 while Jacksonville stopped Washington 21-18. The Eagles drop to 10-3, 2 games back of Chicago in the race for the NFC's best record. The Redskins fall to 7-6 but remain in decent shape to grab the final wild card berth. As for the AFC clubs, the Titans have a 2 game lead on Jacksonville atop the South Division. The 6-7 Jags are still in the wild card race. Jacksonville scored 11 points in the 4th quarter, including a 2 point conversion with under 2 minutes to play, to rally to tie Washington at 18 before Stacey Bennett connected on a 25 yard field goal to win it in overtime. RB Keith Musso led the Jags with 130 yards rushing and he also had 4 catches for 34 yards. The Jacksonville defense did a good job bottling up the Redskins offense led by backup QB Mike Washington who again replaced the injured Sammy *Baugh. Bob Nobis made a 51 yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter to allow Tennessee to tie Philadelphia at 10. Manfred Gayle and receiver Mark Hayman hooked up on a 25 yard touchdown pass in overtime to complete the Titans comeback. Gayle threw for 412 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Harley Mitchell gained 158 yards rushing for the Eagles but both clubs had difficulty finding the endzone. In other action Tyson Pittman returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown to help New Orleans past Pittsburgh 17-6. Both clubs are 7-6 and still in the playoff hunt. The Saints have a 2 game lead in the NFC South while the Steelers are fighting for a wild card berth. Darren McLeod ran for 158 yards and a touchdown as Tampa surprised AFC North leading Cleveland 24-13. Because of injuries the Browns have used 4 different starting quarterbacks this season but at 8-5 they still have a 1 game lead on Pittsburgh. Kansas City beat Seattle 28-13 as the 8-5 Chiefs solidified their grasp on a wild card berth. Defensive tackle Mike Smith had 2 sacks and forced a fumble to help Green Bay past Minnesota 13-7. Both clubs are 5-8. Eric Poppinga threw 4 touchdown passes as the 4-9 Giants won their second straight, 35-27 over Dallas. The Cowboys built a 21-7 lead before starting QB Doug Schroeder left the game with an injury. His replacement, rookie Avon Sandusky, threw 3 interceptions to cost the Cowboys the game. Atlanta scored 17 points in the 4th quarter but came up just short in a 26-23 loss to Carolina. Both clubs are 5-8 and 2 games back of New Orleans in the NFC South. Hugh Vick caught 3 passes for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Miami past Buffalo 27-9. The win allows the Dolphins to leapfrog past Buffalo and out of the AFC East cellar. Defending league champion Baltimore moved a step closer to missing the playoffs altogether after a 37-15 loss to Cincinnati. Ken Smith threw 3 touchdown passes for the 6-7 Bengals. The Ravens fall to 5-7-1. Johnny Cushing ran for 114 yards to help Oakland past San Diego 34-13. Houston scored 23 second half points on two interception returns, a punt return and a safety to beat Indianapolis 30-6. LB Ron Shonta returned one of the picks for a touchdown and also had 2 sacks and a fumble recovery on the day. COLLEGE FOOTBALL TRIPPI WINS MAXWELL AWARD Georgia quarterback Charles *Trippi was named the winner of the Maxwell Award as college football's top player. The award, handed out by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia, is considered to be the second most prestigous college football award next to the Heisman Trophy. Trippi, who is also a finalist for the Heisman, led Georgia to a perfect 10-0 record and a number 2 ranking nationally. He threw for 3325 yards and 28 touchdowns while being intercepted just 6 times. The Heisman Trophy, awarded by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York, will be presented next week. Trippi, along with North Carolina QB DeMarco Dickinson and Army RB Glen *Davis are considered the front runners. St Mary's RB Herman *Wedemeyer and Army receiver Barney *Poole round out the five finalists. Below are the past winners of the Maxwell Award 1946 - Charles Trippi (QB) Georgia 1945 - Doc Blanchard (FB) Army 1944 - Glenn Davis (HB) Army 1943 - Bob Odell (HB) Pennsylvania 1942 - Paul Governali (QB) Columbia 1941 - Bill Dudley (HB) Virginia 1940 - Tom Harmon (HB) Michigan 1939 - Nile Kinnick (HB) Iowa 1938 - Davey O'Brien (QB) Texas Christian 1937 - Clint Frank (HB) Yale STROHMEYER WINS OUTLAND TROPHY Notre Dame defensive end George *Strohmeyer has been named the first winner of the Outland Trophy. The trophy was created to recognize the top interior lineman in college football. John H. Outland played football at the University of Kansas for two years, then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania to study medicine. Walter Camp named him an All-American at tackle in 1897 and at halfback in 1898. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Outland returned to Kansas to practice surgery. He also coached the university's football team in 1901. This year Dr. Outland donated a trophy to be awarded to the outstanding interior lineman in college football, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America. Strohmeyer was the key cog in the 4th ranked Fighting Irish's defense. He had 15 sacks and 54 tackles in 9 games. Others who received consideration included Notre Dame offensive tackle George *Connor, Army OT Albert *Nemetz, California OG Bill *Hatchen and Georgia Tech DT Paul *Duke. All are expected to be high NFL draft picks next April. UNIVERSITY OF DENVER EARNS FINAL BOWL BID Denver claimed the final bowl bid after a 23-7 victory over Utah State on Saturday. The victory gives the Fighting Parsons first place in the Mountain States Conference and an automatic berth in the Raisin Bowl against Border Conference champion Hardin-Simmons. Denver finishes with a 5-0-1 record in Mountain States play, just ahead of 5-1 Utah. Had Utah State managed to upset Denver than the University of Utah would have claimed the conference title. There was just one other game involving major college teams over the weekend. Nevada beat a team of all-stars from the state of Hawaii 30-13. Nevada finishes it's season with a perfect 9-0 record however most of the independant school's games were against lower level colleges. Next week Southern California tries to salvage a little from a dissappointing season when they visit Southeastern Conference weakling Tulane in one of two games. The other contest has the Hawaiian stars hosting Portland. The Bowl schedule gets under way Christmas Eve with Rutgers and North Carolina State meeting in the Cigar Bowl. With number 1 ranked Army passing on a bowl bid the two marquee games are #2 Georgia vs #4 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl and #3 UCLA vs #5 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE NEW YORK GIANTS The New York Giants have now gone 18 seasons without a pennant after a 7th place finish with a 61-93 record a year ago. The near future does not look bright for the Giants as they rank near the bottom of the league in both batting and pitching and there is a real shortage of young talent. The lone exception is pitcher Dave Koslo (17-18, 3.49), a 26 year old who won the National League rookie of the year award last season. The rest of the rotation for next season will likely consist of three 33 year olds in Russ Bauers (8-17, 4.55), Manny Salvo (7-11, 4.51) and Ken Chase (7-18, 4.50). Veteran Mel Ott (.280,12,59) still packs in the fans but he will be 38 when the season starts and clearly nearing the end of a great career that saw him hit over 400 home runs. The big concern in New York is the vast majority of the position players are in their mid to late thirties and there is only one everyday player under age 30. That would be 29 year old 3B Sid Gordon (.239,14,64). The rest of the infield consists of 37 year old Johnny McCarthy (.227,7,31) at first, 36 year old Lonny Frey (.288,2,34) at second and 37 year old shortstop Mickey Haslin (.271,4,41). Reserve outfielder Danny Gardella, a babe at age 27, may get his first chance to play regularly by taking over first base duties if McCarthy falters. Aside from Ott, the outfield consists of 34 year old Vince Dimaggio (.261,10,50) and 36 year old Hank Leiber (.280,12,59). With catcher Frankie Pytlak retiring, the duties fall entirely to 37 year old Frank Reiber (.220,4,45). Outfielder Charlie Mead, a 25 year old who missed half of last season with a broken hip, is the only talent the Giants have in their farm system. Mead hit .283 with 13 homers at AAA before his injury. Judging by the age of the regulars and the lack of young talent things could get a whole lot worse in New York before they get better. 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES The bad news is the 6th place Phillies finished in the bottom half of the National League for the 9th straight season and they have finished as high as third only once in the past 25 years. The good news is the Phillies 74 wins was their best output since 1937. There are also some good young prospects to build around. The best of which is outfielder Del Ennis (.287,14,75), who many felt should have been named National League rookie of the year. Ennis is just 21 and looks to have a great career ahead of him. 20 year old catcher Joe Garagiola came over from St Louis in a deadline deal. He may still be a year away from the majors but he did hit .235 in an 8 game major league trial in September. 22 year old second baseman Garvin Hammer spent the year in Class A but he may be a player to watch in the future. The Phillies also have a decent pitching prospect in Vic Lombardi, who went 11-12 with a 3.40 era in his second season in the majors. The 24 year old seems fully recovered from a torn tricep suffered as a rookie. 39 year old Bill Swift (15-19, 3.37) and his 265 career victories returns for another season as the Phillies number 1 starter. 29 year old Lefty Hoerst (8-10, 3.72) and 27 year old Charley Schanz (2-1, 2.23) will probably also make the rotation along with Lombardi. 35 year old Bennie Warren (.271,7,40) returns to handle the catching duties. 32 year old Joe Gordon (.262,1,561) is the offensive leader of the infield. 30 year old Ray Sanders (.301,4,61) is coming off a gold glove year at first base. Third baseman Pinky May (.260,2,52) will be 36 but looks like he may have a year or two left in the tank. Shortstop definately needs an upgrade as 38 year old Leo Norris (.215,4,45) is not the answer. Joining Ennis in the outfield are veterans Buster Adams (.281,13,67) and Bobby Estalella (.308,6,65). It has been an awful long time but Phillies fans may finally see there club finish with a .500 record in 1947. The team is still several players away from contending but they are headed in the right direction for a change. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE RED WINGS CONTINUE TO LEAD WAY With a win and two ties this week the Detroit Red Wings have widened their lead atop the National League standings to 9 points over second place New York. However, the big story in the league continues to be the play of Max Bentley. The heart and soul of the Chicago Black Hawks was involved in 7 of the Hawks 10 goals this week to boost his league leading scoring total to 26 points. Four players are tied for second with 19 including Maurice Richard who, like his Montreal teammates, has been in a terrible slump the last couple of weeks after a very quick start. GOLF ROUNDUP RYDER CUP TEAMS ANNOUNCED After a 10 year hiatus and some serious concerns that the exhibition would never be staged again the Ryder Cup is a go for next summer in Portland, Oregon. However, were it not for the efforts of one man it is doubtful the Ryder Cup Matches would have resumed in 1947. An Oregon fruit grower and canner, Robert A. Hudson, has come forward to fund the British team. Food rationing was still in force in Britain when Hudson, who also was a member of the PGA Advisory Committee, stepped up and offered his help and the use of Portland Golf Club as the host site. Here are the members of each club and notable accomplishments from the 1946 season UNITED STATES Captain Ben Hogan - won 1946 Masters, 3rd in Britsh Open Byron Nelson - won 1946 PGA and British Open, 1946 TSN golfer of the year Jimmy Demaret - tied for 5th in 46 Masters, 6th in US Open Sam Snead Herman Barron Lloyd Mangrum - finished 5th in 46 US Open Ed Oliver Lew Worsham Dutch Harrison BRITIAN Captain Henry Cotton - tied for 5th in 46 Masters Arthur Lees Fred Daly won 1946 Irish Open Charlie Ward Jimmy Adams Max Faulkner Dai Rees - finished 4th in 46 Masters Sam King continued

BOXING NEWS
A quiet week on the boxing front as there were no bouts of note in the United States. However, 2 more European champions were crowned. In the lightweight division Czech fighter George Latka won a unanimous decision over Charley Gomer of France to claim the European title. Latka actually fights out of San Jose, California but because he was born in Czechoslovakia he is eligible to fight for the European title. Neither Gomer nor Latka are expected to ever challenge for the world title. Another Frenchman, Ray Famechon, made the Paris crowd a little happier. Famechon outpointed Ellis Ask to win the European Featherweight title. Ask, a fighter from Helsinki Finland who only fought one bout in the year long world title tourney, is just 20 years old and looks to have a bright future. Famechon improves to 25-11 and is considered to be among the top 5 or 6 in his weightclass worldwide. STATS AND STANDINGS NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE Code:

I get empty sometimes and filled ones other times. It's kind of weird. BTW, do you have a link to the sim you're using for the NCAA Football? I'd be interested in getting it and messing around some in it.
