The Philadelphia Athletics not only captured their first championship, but the first World Series win by an American League team. The "Junior Circuit" hopes this will help raise the league's esteem. Many of the better baseball players had been signing with National League teams with the opinion that their brand of baseball was better. Over the winter, the AL was pleased to see some top young talent join their league, such as catcher Tom Turley with Detroit, first baseman Joshua Hitchins with the White Sox and pitcher Dummy Netsky, brother of Cleveland's former pitcher Chief Netsky, with the Boston Pilgrims.

Not to be outdone, the NL successfully courted some intriguing players of their own. Centerfielder "Barefoot" Atkins agreed to play with Cincinnati. He has a lot of ability and could quickly become a fixture for the Reds. Another good young player is first baseman Jared Jarry, who signed with the New York Giants. Speaking of the Giants, they have some of the finest young talent around. Mixed in with some good veterans, it looks like this team is on the upswing. St. Louis may be some experts' early NL favorite, but it is not a clear-cut decision. Several other teams, mainly Chicago, Brooklyn and even the Phillies should be in the mix all season.

The AL race may again come down to Philadelphia and New York. Detroit collapsed last season, and Cleveland looks like they are back on track. The Broncos have a fine young pitching staff, and if they mature this season, Cleveland could be back in the thick of a race. You also have to consider Washington, who has a strong pitching staff of their own.

Ancestors Added

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) Pilgrims

Dummy is the brother of Chief Netsky who was forced to retire last season with back problems. Dummy signed with the Boston Pilgrims of the AL, which is a team that appears to be getting closer to being a pennant contender. Along with other young pitchers like "Green Toe" Gillespie, Netsky looks to be part of a strong rotation in the near future. This season, he cannot expect to see much action. He will mainly pitch in relief, but the Pilgrims have their eyes on Dummy and will get him a few starts as soon as he is ready.

The Boston Pilgrims are this season's surprise starter. There seems to be one every season. They have gotten some exceptional pitching from Jon Douglas (5-1, 1.15) and "Green Toe" Gillespie (3-2, 1.80). Cleveland is off to a fantastic start too, and they were in first place until they lost their last 2 games against the White Sox. Whiskey Allen is leading the AL with a .422 average, and Patrick De Leon, who was acquired in a trade last July from Detroit, is 6-0 with a 2.33 ERA as the team's new ace. The Higlanders are in a close 3rd, led as always by some amazing pitchers. They have 4 great hurlers, and the scary thing is that ace "Johnny Cakes" Sutton got off to a shaky start. Once he gets on track, New York will be tough to beat.

The New York Giants were hot in April, and they currently lead the National League. They have been boosted by some incredible hitting, primarily that of young second baseman Jed Burke, who hit .333 with a league leading 23 RBI. Both Boston and Chicago have started well too, but the defending NL champion Cardinals are in last place. Their pitching was shaky this spring, but it has been terrible this season. Their offense is still smoking with young hitters Woody Woodson and "Butterball" Klehammer, but they have not been enough to cover the team's awful pitching.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .422 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored.

NL - Jed Burke, 2B, New York Giants - He hit .333 with 23 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Jon Douglas, Boston Pilgrims - He was 5-1 with a 1.15 ERA, including 3 complete game shutouts!

NL - Will Haggan, Boston Doves - He was 5-1 with a 1.02 ERA, including a No Hitter on April 23rd against Cincinnati!

American League Standings

Boston (A) 17 7 .708 -
Cleveland 16 8 .667 1.0
New York (A) 15 9 .625 2.0
Detroit 13 11 .542 4.0
Philadelphia (A) 11 13 .458 6.0
Chicago (A) 10 14 .417 7.0
St. Louis (A) 7 17 .292 10.0
Washington 7 17 .292 10.0

National League Standings

New York (N) 17 8 .680 -
Boston (N) 14 10 .583 2.5
Chicago (N) 14 10 .583 2.5
Brooklyn 13 11 .542 3.5
Philadelphia (N) 12 12 .500 4.5
Cincinnati 10 15 .400 7.0
Pittsburgh 10 15 .400 7.0
St. Louis (N) 8 17 .320 9.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - As said above, he was the batter of the month. Enough said. It's his 2nd BOTM award. Also, his .351 career average is the best in all of baseball for players with at least 2000 ay-bats. He better watch the Cardinals' Woody Woodson though next season once he has the prerequisite AB's.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He had a lousy April, hitting just .182 (2 for 11). At age 22, it's still not clear when he will become a regular starter.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty played a key role in the Giants' hot start. He hit .333 (8 for 24) with 5 RBI.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy must be enjoying the Pilgrims' first place start in his rookie season even though he's in the bullpen. So far, he's pitched in just one game, allowing one unearned run and 2 hits in a single inning.

To sign up go to THIS post

Next season is 1908 and I input ancestors in the year they turn 18, so a person born in 1890 would be in the "ammy draft" next season... I don't "need" a player for any specific year, because I'll enter every single ancestor that is signed up in the year they turn 18... whether there are no ancestors for that year or 20 ancestors... I'll take the best player at the ancestor's primary position, then do what tweaking is necessary to make him the way you request based on the signup criteria I gave in the forum linked above...

By all means, sign up! Even if the ancestor won't play for many years... I have players already from all generations, but the "old" guys are getting first dibs...

May was a wacky, wacky month in the American League. The defending champion Athletics began the month with an 8-game winning streak to put them back in the heat of the race. The Pilgrims became the next in a long string of teams who had hot Aprils only to fade before mid-summer. They wasted no time in falling out of the race, going 5-21 in May, including a miserable 12-game losing streak. At the same time, Cleveland went on an amazing 14-game winning streak to put them solidly in first place by 4 games over the equally hot New York Highlanders.

Boston and New York have become co-favorites in the NL. They both had solid months. Meanwhile, Brooklyn remains just 3 games back and could be a surprise team. The Cubs faded back to the pack with a lousy May, and St. Louis played better but has not been able to dig themselves out of the deep last place hole they dug in April.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Willie Stewart, 3B, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .376 with 2 home runs, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored.

NL - Ralphy Broadnax, 3B, Boston Doves - He hit .411 with 23 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Paul Rieker, St. Louis Browns - He was 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA.

NL - Allan Albertini, Brooklyn Superbas - He was 5-1 with a 1.19 ERA, including 2 shutouts.

American League Standings

Cleveland 36 15 .706 -
New York (A) 32 19 .627 4.0
Philadelphia (A) 29 23 .558 7.5
Chicago (A) 24 27 .471 12.0
Detroit 24 28 .462 12.5
Boston (A) 22 28 .440 13.5
St. Louis (A) 20 31 .392 16.0
Washington 18 34 .346 18.5

National League Standings

Boston (N) 32 20 .615 -
New York (N) 31 21 .596 1.0
Brooklyn 29 23 .558 3.0
Philadelphia (N) 26 25 .510 5.5
Chicago (N) 22 29 .431 9.5
Cincinnati 22 29 .431 9.5
Pittsburgh 22 29 .431 9.5
St. Louis (N) 22 30 .423 10.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .402 with 16 RBI and 16 runs scored. He was an amazing 16-2 in stolen bases! I think that's a personal (if not league) record for steals in a month. He looks like a man on a mission, leading the Broncos to an incredible start. An it appears that 16 in his lucky number. He still leads the AL with a .412 average. He is certainly on pace to break his career mark of 37 SB, as well as a few other personal records.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He hit .281 with 3 RBI and 5 runs scored.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .423 (11 for 26) with 3 RBI.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy made it into 4 games this month as a reliever. He earned his first career save and had a 3.86 ERA. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks while also getting his first big league strikeout.

The top three teams in the AL each have winning percentages of .600 or greater. There are no other AL teams with winning records. Fourth place Boston is 16.5 games off the lead already with nearly three full months left in the season. Cleveland ended the month with a 7-game winning streak and 19-10 record in June. New York closed to within 1 game of the Broncos, thanks to an 8-game winning streak, but Cleveland's late hot-streak pushed the Highlanders back to 6 games off the pace. Philadelphia was 19-9 on the month, but they are still 7 games out. The Athletics were dealt a huge blow mid-month when star centerfielder Terrence Bakula was lost for the season with a broken knee suffered when he collided with the outfield wall.

The surprising Brooklyn Superbas pulled into first place with a 17-10 record. Boston, now one game behind, went 13-14 allowing Brooklyn to take over first place. The New York Giants continued to prove they were real, and actually took first place briefly, but they lost 6 of their last 7 games in June, dropping them to 4th place and 5 games off the lead.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Willie Vedros, 2B, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .326 with 21 RBI and 13 runs scored.

NL - Will Cleland, RF, Boston Doves - He hit .362 with 23 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Greg Heiderich, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 5-2 with a 1.16 ERA, including 2 shutouts.

NL - Bowie Castellon, Chicago Cubs - He was 5-2 with a 0.57 ERA, including 2 shutouts.

American League Standings

Cleveland 55 25 .688 -
New York (A) 48 30 .615 6.0
Philadelphia (A) 48 32 .600 7.0
Boston (A) 37 40 .481 16.5
St. Louis (A) 36 42 .462 18.0
Detroit 33 45 .423 21.0
Chicago (A) 30 47 .390 23.5
Washington 26 52 .333 28.0

National League Standings

Brooklyn 46 33 .582 -
Boston (N) 45 34 .570 1.0
Philadelphia (N) 41 37 .526 4.5
New York (N) 41 38 .519 5.0
Cincinnati 39 40 .494 7.0
Chicago (N) 36 43 .456 10.0
St. Louis (N) 35 44 .443 11.0
Pittsburgh 33 47 .412 13.5

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .367 with 14 RBI and 18 runs scored. He had a whopping 6 hits on June 7th in an important 12-inning win versus New York. That set an AL record for hits in an extra-inning game. Whiskey still leads the AL with a .396 average. Worth noting is the fact that the Cardinals' Woody Woodson leads the NL with a .417 average... after half the season has passed no less!

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He hit .235 (8 for 34) with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty slumped to .139 (5 for 36) on the month, and the surprising Giants slipped to 4th.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy pitched in 3 games and made his first 2 career starts. On the month, he was 1-1 with a 1.56 ERA. In 17.1 innings, he allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 16 hits and 5 walks with 9 K's. His first career win came on June 23rd against the White Sox.

The Boston Doves finally pulled ahead of the competition in the NL, although only by 4.5 games over both Brooklyn and New York. The Doves had one of the best records in their league over the month of July at 14-10. The NL is very evenly matched with no one dominant team.

In the American League, Cleveland has been putting on a show. Their winning percentage eclipsed .700 for a few days, and they are currently at .676. The highest winning percentage a team has ever finished a season with is .610 by the Boston Beaneaters in 1904 and the New York Highlanders in 1905. The Broncos can win several ways. They have good pitching, but their offense has been outstanding. They have the highest team batting average, most runs scored and most stolen bases in either league. Whiskey Allen is hitting .403 to lead the way. Cleveland has 156 stolen bases, which is more than the Boston Pilgrims, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates combined!! The second highest total is the Detroit Tigers' 118 and then the St. Louis Browns come in with 77 - less than half of the Broncos' total! Allen has stolen a career high 38 bases, but he is second in the league and on his team to third baseman Paris "Frenchie" Fournier, who has 39. While Cleveland is having a great season, the New York Highlanders are right behind them with a .621 winning percentage, but 6 games off the lead!

While Allen is leading the AL batting race at .403, his National League counterpart, Woody Woodson, leads that league at .404. Both players are on pace for the highest batting average in history, and currently both players already hold that record in their respective league - Allen with .371 in 1902 and Woodson with .390 just last season. While there are a lot of similarities between the two, the biggest difference is that Woodson has much more power while Allen has vastly more speed.

It was a rough month in the city of Philadelphia. The Athletics took another big hit to their pennant hopes - as if the play of Cleveland and New York wasn't enough - when they lost one of their aces, Bosco Erlewine, for the season with shoulder problems. He was 14-9 on the season with a 3.20 ERA. On the same day, the Phillies lost their #1 starter Mark Krosser to similar shoulder difficulties. The loss of Krosser (10-12, 3.07) practically dooms the Phillies' season.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .425 with 15 RBI and 16 runs scored. That just may be the highest batting average ever in a single month.

NL - "Buzzard" Getchell, LF, Boston Doves - He hit .388 with 15 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Johnny Cakes" Sutton, New York Highlanders - He was 5-1 with a 2.17 ERA, including 1 shutout.

NL - David Nelson, Cincinnati Reds - He was 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA, including 1 shutout.

American League Standings

Cleveland 71 34 .676 -
New York (A) 64 39 .621 6.0
Philadelphia (A) 60 45 .571 11.0
St. Louis (A) 49 54 .476 21.0
Detroit 47 57 .452 23.5
Boston (A) 46 59 .438 25.0
Chicago (A) 39 63 .382 30.5
Washington 40 65 .381 31.0

National League Standings

Boston (N) 59 44 .573 -
Brooklyn 55 49 .529 4.5
New York (N) 55 49 .529 4.5
Philadelphia (N) 53 51 .510 6.5
Cincinnati 52 52 .500 7.5
Chicago (N) 50 54 .481 9.5
St. Louis (N) 46 57 .447 13.0
Pittsburgh 45 59 .433 14.5

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - As I wrote above, Whiskey's having by far his greatest season. He's already set a personal high in stolen bases. He is 2 hits away from collecting 1,000 for his career. At age 24, his prime hasn't even come yet!

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He hit .280 (7 for 25) with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .244 (10 for 41) with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (A) - Dummy has earned a regular role in the Pilgrims' starting rotation. He started 6 games this month, going 1-4 with a 5.04 ERA. In 44.2 innings, he allowed 59 hits, 29 runs (25 earned) and 11 walks with 12 K's.

Just wondering....what's your schedule for this? It seems to have slowed down a bit in the past week or so.

Not complaining, just want to know how often to check.

Unfortunately, I don't have an exact schedule... I've been much busier lately, and I will continue to be for a few weeks... I try to post every free moment I have, but it's been hectic... believe me, this is one of my ootp priorities... and I will post everytime I can... I hope to pick it up a little in a few days... but whenever I get swamped at home or work, I have to wait a day or 2 to post...

Thanks to those of you who've been keeping up... I enjoy this... I'm about to make a post shortly...

Cleveland had a 4-game losing streak near the beginning and end of August, but they went 16-12 overall and maintained a 6-game lead over New York. The Highlanders' pitching staff has been outstanding. They lead all of baseball in EVERY major pitching category. However, they have been unable to catch the Broncos. Cleveland, on the other hand, has been led by an outstanding offense, which leads all of baseball in batting average, stolen bases and runs scored.

In the NL, Boston went 10-19 in August, squandering their 4.5 game lead at the beginning of the month. The New York Giants went 16-13 on the month, and they were in first place for a time, but they are currently 1-game behind Chicago. The Cubs had an unbelievable 22-7 record in August to move from 6th to first. Throw Brooklyn into the mix and there are 4 teams within 2.5 games of first with just 4 weeks remaining in the regular season. This looks like another great NL pennant race, as all four of these top teams play many head-to-head games in September.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Patrick Seifried, 1B, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .350 with 16 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Cleveland easily won their first AL pennant and became the first team in baseball history to win 100 games. In the process, they lost their #1 starter Patrick De Leon with elbow problems. De Leon tied the major league record with 29 wins, but missed at least 3 potential starts with this injury.

In the NL, Chicago and New York were tied for first when they faced each other from September 15-17. The Giants won 2-of-3 and that proved to be the difference, as New York won their first NL pennant.

Whiskey Allen won the AL batting title with a .387 average - 53 points ahead of the next hitter - setting a new AL record. Woody Woodson won the NL batting crown with a .386 average. Allen's Cleveland teammate "Frenchie" Fournier set ne major league records with 108 runs scored and 66 steals.

World Series

Cleveland is a big favorite to win this World Series. They have an incredible offense, but their pitching took a big blow with the loss of De Leon. New York has a good offense too, but their pitching has been shaky at times.

Prediction: With 100 wins in a tough American League, the Broncos should be able to win the Series. Cleveland wins in 5.

New York 6 - Cleveland 4: "Butterball" Klehammer was acquired by the Giants in a mid-season trade, and he paid off in Game 1 going 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI double. That RBI cam in a 5-run first inning from which Cleveland never recovered.

New York 6 - Cleveland 1: "Crackers" Spruce went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI as starting pitcher Will Stafford dominated the Broncos, allowing just 1 run in a complete game victory. The Giants have shocked the Broncos by winning the first two games in Cleveland.

Cleveland 2 - New York 5: Cleveland gor 12 hits on the day, but scored only 2 runs, stranding a total of 13 runners (counting 3 walks). New York's Bradley Stevenson got the win by pitching out of many sticky situations. Cleveland's vaunted offense has gotten many hits, but no the timely ones that score runs.

Cleveland 6 - New York 9: New York jumped out to a 9-2 lead after 4 innings. Cleveland mounted a few comebacks, but all for naught as they become the first team ever swept in the World Series. The Giants scored 9 runs, but only 1 was earned as the Broncos made 5 errors. After finishing in 7th place last season, the Giants win the World Series in just the first winning season in franchise history!

James Greenwell was named World Series MVP. In a series where a lot of runs were scored, he was 2-0 in with a 3.12 ERA, winning Games 1 and 4.
