Week 13: July 23-August 3, 2023

Round 25:
..BK Kepmem 1-4 Sitache - 3-8, 6-7, 4-2, 7-8, 5-6
...National 2-3 Meka - 9-6, 7-5, 2-3(10), 7-8(10), 0-4
.....Semyof 2-3 Cheshek - 1-6, 6-7(10), 4-2, 2-1, 4-5
...Pasataki 4-1 Sh.Eagles - 7-8(10), 10-3, 7-4, 7-6, 8-7(12)
.....Kupore 1-4 Otahel City - 7-8, 4-7, 3-11, 3-2(10), 3-5
.....Keleri 2-3 Westline - 1-10, 2-6, 12-11(10), 3-0, 1-12
Mighty Oaks 3-2 Fampalo - 0-2, 4-1(10), 4-5, 5-2, 13-4
..Amnanache 2-3 Lutrul - 1-6, 7-4, 2-3, 2-4, 5-4
.......Muni 0-5 Tsapna - 1-3, 4-11, 1-3, 0-2, 3-6
...Akashemo 3-2 A.Spirits - 9-6, 5-4, 1-7, 6-2, 1-2

National 9, Meka 6: Well this is sad. The season's arguably biggest breakout star, National SP Kiro Ponarf, is out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury. The former lower-league closer had never made a start before this year, but was 12-1 with a 2.24 ERA in his first spin around the rotation.

Sitache 6, BK Kepmem 5: A 3-homer game for Sitache catcher Chise Koslu, a 17-year-old rookie. Koslu has been a nice positive development for Sitache, despite being forced all around the diamond due to injuries and a lack of position player depth of any kind (he should really just be a catcher).

Round 26:
...Westline 2-3 Fampalo - 7-2, 6-3, 6-7(10), 5-6, 2-3
.....Kupore 1-4 BK Kepmem - 3-5, 6-8, 5-7, 4-5, 4-3
.....Keleri 2-3 National - 6-3, 0-7, 1-0, 0-1, 3-7
....Cheshek 3-2 Meka - 5-2, 9-6, 2-3, 5-6, 6-3
.....Lutrul 3-2 Otahel City - 7-3, 4-7, 9-6(11), 3-8, 7-1
..Amnanache 1-4 Muni - 1-3, 3-1, 2-3, 3-10, 2-3
Mighty Oaks 5-0 Akashemo - 6-0, 4-2, 3-0, 7-3, 5-3
....Sitache 4-1 Sh.Eagles - 5-3, 6-3, 2-4, 18-7, 6-3
.....Tsapna 1-5 A.Spirits - 1-3*, 8-2, 5-8, 2-8, 2-4, 2-3
.....Semyof 2-3 Pasataki - 3-5, 8-4, 3-12, 4-6, 10-3

*The first game in the Tsapna/Spirits series was a continuation of their rained-out series finale from April 11, and was thus played with Tsapna getting the last at bat. The Spirits had led 3-0 after 4 innings of the rainout, and that lead held up.

Aroketsil Spirits 8, Tsapna 2: Spirits 1B Peku Karwo is the first player to hit 50 homers this season. With 60 games remaining, a chase for the single-season record (81 by Setsu Tsuefo of the Ransu Shockers in 1996) is unlikely, but not impossible. Karwo added another dinger the next day and ends the week on 51.

Shunna Municipal 10, Amnanache 3: Muni LF Tae Hefie will be out until around mid-September with an ankle sprain. It seemed to happen while sliding, going first-to-third on a single during Muni's 3-run third inning.

Sitache 18, Shunna Eagles 7: On a night where everything was clicking for the Sitache offense (23 hits, 12 for extra bases), shortstop Komake Tanipa drew the headlines by hitting for the cycle, the second player to do so this year. Tanipa was 4-5 overall, and added another RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Sitache led 13-0 midway through the third inning, so most of the suspense was in seeing if Tanipa would get the home run that he needed to complete the set.

July awards:

Batter of the Month: Shunna Eagles C Lakiru Shufaho - .459, 6 HR, 27 RBI, 20 R. Shufaho, who is a full-time EL catcher for the first time after being the backup at Keleri last year, is now ranked as the league's #1 backstop.

Pitcher of the Month: Westline SP Chapeo Mematsa - 5-0, 30 K, 32 IP, 1.41 ERA in 5 starts. Being traded at the deadline from Sitache to Westline has altered the trajectory of Mematsa's career.

Rookie of the Month: Westline LF Chatiri Shosotsoke - .327, 33 H, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 22 R. He's hitting leadoff for one of the best teams in the country, but still has another couple of gears that he could reach in his development.

Not much movement up and down this week, but the key areas of the standings tightened a bit. National's lead shrinks from 5 games to 3, and the relegation race has gotten extremely blurry with the bottom 3 all going positive for the week. Even teams like Muni and Meka don't feel totally safe.

In week 14, the biggest series is almost certainly Pasataki Galaxy traveling to play at Mighty Oaks in Aroketsil for round 27. There are a ton of rivalry series in round 28, though:
  • Two Ransu derbies, both among the closest geographically within the city - Semyof and Westline are not far from each other, and though it's not a classic rivalry, neither are Tsapna and Lutrul.
  • Meka vs. Akashemo United are also each other's geographically closest teams, though as far as I can tell they've never played before this year.
  • The Shunna matchup of Muni vs. Eagles is always a good one too,
  • but the most critical might be the relegation scrap between the two northeasternmost teams, Sitache and Fampalo.

Round 27:
Aroketsil Spirits vs. Keleri
Pasataki Galaxy vs. Mighty Oaks
Akashemo United vs. Kupore
Shunna Municipal vs. Sitache
Otahel City vs. Cheshek
Meka vs. Westline

Amnanache vs. Mighty Oaks
Meka vs. Akashemo United
Otahel City vs. Pasataki Galaxy
Shunna Municipal vs. Shunna Eagles
Fampalo vs. Sitache
National vs. BK Kepmem

Week 14: August 4-15, 2023

I don't think I've ever shared this chart on this forum, but this is the Lokasi syllabary (or alphabet, if you will). Each character represents a syllable with the given consonant preceding the vowel, save for the four at the bottom, which are syllable endings (codas). When you see a team logo, it's the first syllable in that team's name. The chart uses the International Phonetic Alphabet, mostly - so, for example, "j" is the consonant sound we usually use a Y for in English.

The 4th vowel row are the characters that are being used when I spell a name that has a Y in it as a vowel (Wyku Tofpalts, Lohy Awia, etc.) and represents a neutral vowel (a schwa).

Round 27:
..A.Spirits 3-2 Keleri - 0-7, 9-8, 2-4, 10-6(10), 7-0
...Pasataki 2-3 Mighty Oaks - 8-4, 1-9, 3-1, 8-9, 4-6
...Akashemo 4-1 Kupore - 8-7, 11-8, 3-6, 6-3, 5-2
.......Muni 1-4 Sitache - 4-5(10), 2-9, 3-2(10), 3-4, 3-6
Otahel City 1-4 Cheshek - 2-5, 1-8, 3-10, 0-9, 3-2
.......Meka 2-3 Westline - 4-2, 1-8, 6-13, 5-1, 2-5
..BK Kepmem 3-2 Semyof - 3-4, 6-4, 3-4, 5-3, 6-4
....Fampalo 1-4 Lutrul - 1-3, 4-5(10), 9-6, 3-7, 5-10
...National 5-0 Amnanache - 2-0, 6-2, 11-2, 4-1, 10-4
..Sh.Eagles 0-5 Tsapna - 1-8, 3-7, 2-3(10), 1-8, 2-4

BK Kepmem 6, Semyof 4 (the first one): Kepmem starter Ihuna Cheyeo, a pending free agent, tore the flexor tendon in his left elbow, ending his season and nearly ending his 2024 season as well. He may have to rehab next year without a contract.

August 7: Mighty Oaks SS Ukise Sekao announced he will retire at season's end. Sekao, 36, has not started a game this season, and has appeared in just 13, garnering 15 plate appearances. He originally surfaced with Moncha BC (Moncha, Rupakare), playing there in tiers 7 and 8 before making the jump to the EL with Fampalo in 2010. He also played in the EL with Akashemo and Pasataki Galaxy - Sekao's 7 years with Mighty Oaks are his longest tenure with any individual team. Overall, he's recorded around 1700 Elite League hits and 327 HR, and won the Gold Glove in 2020.

Round 28:
....Cheshek 3-2 A.Spirits - 13-11, 2-4, 0-6, 4-3(10), 9-4(10)
.....Keleri 3-2 Kupore - 5-1, 2-6, 1-4, 17-7, 5-1
...Westline 3-2 Semyof - 7-4, 2-3, 1-6, 5-2, 7-3
.....Lutrul 1-4 Tsapna - 4-5, 13-9(10), 5-9, 4-10, 2-3
..Amnanache 1-4 Mighty Oaks - 2-3(10), 3-7, 1-4, 2-0, 2-7
.......Meka 3-2 Akashemo - 1-10, 3-2, 8-2, 0-5, 10-8
Otahel City 3-2 Pasataki - 6-7, 9-8(11), 5-4, 2-10, 2-0
.......Muni 2-3 Sh.Eagles - 7-1, 2-0, 1-5, 3-6, 1-4
....Fampalo 3-2 Sitache - 13-2, 4-0, 14-6, 3-13, 3-4(10)
...National 5-0 BK Kepmem - 6-5, 15-4, 6-3, 9-3, 10-3

Keleri 5, Kupore 1: Keleri OF Lesayo Sofiulo hit his 400th career home run in the series-opening win. Sofiulo, 25, has dropped off his peak production from ages 18-22, but still is a reasonable asset for Keleri. Let's just say I'd be surprised if he opts out of the last three years of his contract at about $12 million per year.

National 15, BK Kepmem 4: The very next night, Kepmem 3B Kala Koshynae hits his 400th home run as well, in a loss. One year younger, Koshynae is still probably the guy in the league with the purest raw power, currently third in the league's home run race.

The tightening we saw at the top of the table last week was short-lived. At this point, 7 games up with 50 to play, it does feel like better than 50/50 odds that National will win their first title of the EL era. Canonically, this is a team with at least a dozen national championships from the not-actually-in-OOTP pre-'91 non-Elite-League years, but it hasn't happened in the OOTP space as yet, despite 13 top-5 finishes. Anyway, it was a perfect 10-0 week for National, and their win streak has run to 12 since losing 1-0 to Keleri on August 1st.

At the bottom, there's now a 3-way tie for 16th place, with Sitache currently the short straw, but it's razor thin. The run differential gap between the Eagles in 16th and Sitache in 18th is only 7 runs, so it's harder than ever to predict what will happen in the end. It's pretty astonishing that only 10 games separate the bottom twelve teams! The all time EL record win total for a last-place team, set by 2017 Akashemo United (75-115), is in danger. No team has ever been relegated with as many as 80 wins either, and I don't think that's likely to happen here but it's on the table.

In week 15, Mighty Oaks vs. Keleri is always a highlight, though the championship implications the series usually carries aren't quite there.

Round 29:
BK Kepmem vs. Cheshek
Aroketsil Spirits vs. Lutrul
Tsapna vs. Otahel City
Akashemo United vs. Westline
Semyof vs. Shunna Municipal
Shunna Eagles vs. Fampalo
Kupore vs. Amnanache
Mighty Oaks vs. Keleri
Sitache vs. National
Pasataki Galaxy vs. Meka

Round 30:

National vs. Kupore
Keleri vs. Semyof
Meka vs. Aroketsil Spirits
Lutrul vs. Mighty Oaks
Westline vs. Shunna Eagles
Shunna Municipal vs. BK Kepmem
Amnanache vs. Akashemo United

Custom, although superficially it is most similar to Japanese for sure. I don't know how realistic the nameset is (likely not very), but I looked at some frequency data & set up an Excel sheet that would generate some names that sounded reasonable and fit the parameters/sounds that I wanted. It's not too difficult to add custom names & nations to the game in a text editor, thankfully.

Week 15: August 16-27, 2023

Round 29:
..BK Kepmem 1-4 Cheshek - 1-3, 4-3, 4-5, 0-5, 3-6
..A.Spirits 1-4 Lutrul - 11-3, 2-10, 2-5, 3-5, 4-6
.....Tsapna 4-1 Otahel City - 8-2, 10-5, 2-1, 13-0, 1-2
...Akashemo 0-5 Westline - 0-3, 0-2, 1-10, 3-10, 4-8
.....Semyof 3-2 Muni - 6-2, 9-6, 0-4, 3-1, 1-2
..Sh.Eagles 3-2 Fampalo - 7-4, 3-2, 3-2, 3-4, 2-5(10)
.....Kupore 2-3 Amnanache - 1-2, 2-0, 3-13, 6-3(10), 1-2(10)
Mighty Oaks 0-5 Keleri - 4-9, 3-5(10), 0-8, 2-4, 4-6
....Sitache 3-2 National - 5-7, 3-2, 12-6, 8-5, 2-5
...Pasataki 2-3 Meka - 5-7, 3-11, 3-0, 6-8, 9-2

Big slipups from all the title contenders here, aside from Westline. Most notable is the five-game sqeep of Mighty Oaks by Keleri in Hefem. Keleri RF Apia Rarasahiu was the catalyst from the leadoff spot, with three multi-hit games in the series and hitting a walkoff home run in game 2.

Sitache 3, National 2: The National win streak comes to an end at 13, the big blow an 8th-inning 3-run homer by Sitache 2B Rypa Riali. National loaded the bases in the 8th but could score only one, needing 2 to tie.

BK Kepmem 4, Cheshek 3: Kepmem LF Faruo Ayekrea, the batting title leader, will miss around two weeks with "tired arm". He'll need around 35 more plate appearances to qualify for the batting title, which hopefully shouldn't be an issue.

Round 30:
Otahel City 2-3 Sitache - 4-5, 10-11(11), 9-3, 5-1, 4-10
....Cheshek 3-2 Tsapna - 1-11, 4-3, 4-3, 2-8, 8-5
....Fampalo 0-5 Pasataki - 2-6, 2-7, 6-8, 3-8, 3-7
...National 2-3 Kupore - 12-1, 2-6, 12-7, 1-5, 2-5
.....Keleri 2-3 Semyof - 6-9, 1-6, 4-1, 0-2, 1-0
.......Meka 5-0 A.Spirits - 5-4(11), 6-2, 15-7, 7-6, 4-3
.....Lutrul 3-2 Mighty Oaks - 1-8, 2-4, 13-6, 2-1(11), 5-2
...Westline 1-4 Sh.Eagles - 3-4(10), 3-4, 3-5, 13-4, 2-6
.......Muni 1-4 BK Kepmem - 2-6, 5-4, 5-7, 3-4, 3-4(10)
..Amnanache 3-2 Akashemo - 4-5, 6-2, 12-5, 0-1, 6-4(10)

Shunna Eagles 4, Westline 3: Westline catcher Epencho Posheni reaches 20 games on his hitting streak. Two downsides, though: for one, it would be snapped the next night in the Eagles' 5-3 win, when he was held hitless; and two, despite eight shutout innings from Sefti Merefife, Westline closer Chiamo Wirilen could not hold a 3-run lead. With one on and one out, double-single-double to tie-single to win for Shunna Eagles, with young 1B Rolupi Kororesi delivering the winner.

I was slightly surprised to see that the longest hit streak in EL history is just 31 games, originally set by Eagles SS Leyi Nokolo in 1997, then equalled by Peku Karwo in 2020.

Standings.............W..L

With four weeks to go, here's the table. National lost a little ground this week, losing both series to bottom-half teams. In winning that series, Sitache created some separation from the league's bottom four, who were all 3-7 or worse on the week.

Round 31 brings us Mighty Oaks' best path forward to retaining their title, as they visit the National Stadium, and the series that draws my eyes in round 32 is the relegation battle between Fampalo and the Spirits.

Round 31:
Tsapna vs. Keleri
Shunna Eagles vs. Meka
Mighty Oaks vs. National
Aroketsil Spirits vs. Westline
BK Kepmem vs. Lutrul
Akashemo United vs. Shunna Municipal
Sitache vs. Cheshek
Semyof vs. Otahel City
Kupore vs. Fampalo
Pasataki Galaxy vs. Amnanache

Round 32:
Otahel City vs. Shunna Eagles
Westline vs. Sitache
National vs. Semyof
Fampalo vs. Aroketsil Spirits
Cheshek vs. Mighty Oaks
Meka vs. Tsapna
Shunna Municipal vs. Kupore
Keleri vs. Akashemo United
Lutrul vs. Pasataki Galaxy
Amnanache vs. BK Kepmem

Next time, it'll be a stats & lower leagues update, with this being reasonably close to the 3/4 mark of the season.

2023 Three-Quarter Mark - Elite League Stats Update

Batting race:
Faruo Ayekrea (LF, BK Kepmem): .356
Fomo Tirma (1B, Sitache): .351
Peku Karwo (1B, Aroketsil Spirits): .349

As mentioned before, Ayekrea is currently injured, but should be back in time to qualify for the batting title (he has played just 122 of 150 games). Tirma and Karwo have combined to win the last four batting titles - Ayekrea would be a first-time winner.

Home runs:
Peku Karwo (1B, Aroketsil Spirits): 56
Tseiriki Tushifo (LF, Akashemo United): 52
Kala Koshynae (3B, BK Kepmem): 45

These three guys are way ahead of the back, with no one else having reached 40 yet. Karwo has blown past his career high of 42, set during last year's MVP campaign.

RBI:
Peku Karwo (1B, Aroketsil Spirits): 136
Safishi Ifata (1B, Tsapna): 133
Uoro Toyerno (LF, Tsapna): 131

Karwo has a real chance at the Triple Crown here, which has never been done in the EL. Something to watch for.

Tsapna is just the league's 7th-ranked offense, but they really picked it up in the third quarter of the season. Wia Merefife of Pasataki, who led in RBI at the halfway point, is 4th with 128.

Position player WAR:
Apia Lela (2B, Pasataki): 10.4
Lawori El (2B, Tsapna): 10.1
Kala Koshynae (3B, BK Kepmem): 9.8

El and Lela are both elite defensive players at the keystone, though both have tremendous offensive value as well: Lela is 3rd in OBP and 7th in RBI, while El is fifth in the batting race.

Stolen bases:
Ketso Kofmi (SS, Cheshek): 79
Lawori El (2B, Tsapna): 64
Rykitopa Tufsu (1B, Fampalo): 55
Manna Tyheshina (CF, Cheshek): 55

Kofmi is still out-stealing 7 entire EL teams on his own, and if you add Tyheshina's SBs the two of them eclipse 15 of the other 19 clubs. Kofmi will have a chance at being the first EL player to swipe 100 bags since 2007, when it was done by both Ekana Yikisike (National, 118) and Shytsika Chelempe (Cheshek, 100).

ERA:
Tula Mitonone (Westline): 2.43
Kwukasho Awia (Westline): 2.55
Notsimi Feshasu (Mighty Oaks): 2.63

Two of the leaders from the last update, Setsinak Perano and Kiro Ponarf, suffered season-ending injuries in the past couple of months. This was pretty close to being a Westline sweep, with Sefti Merefife fourth at 2.64 - Westline has allowed the fewest runs overall to this point, at 3.53 per game.

Wins:
Teshepo Tefasa (BK Kepmem): 19-6
Kwukasho Awia (Westline): 16-8
Notsimi Feshasu (Mighty Oaks): 16-8

Tefasa, who threw the season's only no-hitter in early July, has pulled away from the pack in wins. He led the league in losses in 2021 as a rookie (8-21), so this has been a great turnaround.

Saves:
Chysho Sofiulo (Cheshek): 42
Toe Teshelo (Keleri): 38
Chiamo Wirilen (Westline): 36

Sofiulo is now just 10 away from tying the EL all-time saves record held by Sura Tymeniwa. All three of these guys are in their first year with their respective teams, having come from Keleri, Amnanache, and Hokrof respectively.

Strikeouts:
Tula Mitonone (Westline): 242
Laotso Tirionu (Amnanache): 219
Teshepo Tefasa (BK Kepmem): 206

Mitonone racked up an even 100 strikeouts in this quarter of the season, a huge number. He had double-digit strikeouts on four occasions in this period, giving him 7 such games on the year, and even doubled his win total as well from 7 to 14.

Pitcher WAR:
Tula Mitonone (Westline): 7.1
Notsimi Feshasu (Mighty Oaks): 5.6
Sefti Merefife (Westline): 5.6

Mitonone's monster third quarter has probably made him the Pitcher of the Year favorite. Hard to argue with the numbers!

Hokrof's return to the EL is all but assured, 13 games clear, while Mithazni is in a good spot too. Takanse vs. Nokir in the final promotion place is actually currently an exact tie, with both teams having a run differential of +128. Takanse currently holds the #3 spot by virtue of a 3-2 head to head matchup, but they will play each other again in week 18. Outside of the standings, they couldn't be more different - Nokir never stays out of the EL for too long, with the current period of 5 years gone a franchise record, while Takanse (Takanse, CA, directly between Ransu and Fampalo) has never tasted heights this good.

Three of the teams that are Takanse's closest neighbors in the league look to be going down. If Pelpitimochu or Yoho is the fourth relegated team, then all four will need to go into the NPL. That'll be an interesting realignment puzzle for me.

Still plenty of time left, but I'd bet on two of these top 3 going up to the 2L. Shalish, who was in first for the beginning third of the season, had slumps in late May and early July to probably take them out of contention.

Tiers 9-11 (the state-level leagues) have played 36 games of their 60-game seasons. The best record in the state league system belongs to Samar Town (Samar, RT) at 32-4. There hasn't been a team relegated into the Rutepiyo state league in six years, but Samar actually is in line for a promotion at the moment with the last place team in the South Sea League being from their state.

Week 16: August 28-September 8, 2023

Round 31:
.....Tsapna 1-4 Keleri - 4-2, 1-10, 4-8, 3-5, 5-6
..Sh.Eagles 1-4 Meka - 3-5, 8-9, 0-2, 12-0, 2-6
Mighty Oaks 1-4 National - 6-7(10), 0-8, 6-7, 0-9, 9-1
..A.Spirits 3-2 Westline - 7-5, 11-7, 1-11, 1-2, 8-5(11)
..BK Kepmem 3-2 Lutrul - 8-6, 1-3, 14-7, 3-2, 3-8
...Akashemo 3-2 Muni - 9-7, 9-2, 5-6, 7-1, 5-6
....Sitache 2-3 Cheshek - 1-7, 4-3, 5-6(10), 6-12, 1-0
.....Semyof 2-3 Otahel City - 8-9, 11-3, 3-4(10), 3-4, 12-2
.....Kupore 1-4 Fampalo - 3-4, 0-4, 5-1, 2-3, 5-8
...Pasataki 3-2 Amnanache - 4-1, 2-3(10), 6-7, 6-4, 6-2

With 4 wins out of 5 on home soil, National feel like they've extinguished the chances for Mighty Oaks to retain their titles. This puts them 12 games down with 35 to play (though they get one game closer by week's end). I'm excited to get some new blood at the top of the standings for sure. National, Pasataki Galaxy, and Westline have a grand total of 1 EL championship between them (and that was in 1999), and all three have been promoted from the Second League in the last five years, getting here by spending some coin. I think that's the sign of a healthy league.

Speaking of Westline, the Aroketsil Spirits keep doing just enough for me to believe they might just pull out of the relegation zone, winning their series on the road at Westline. I'll be up-front and say I am definitely rooting for the Spirits to not get relegated.

Aroketsil Spirits 11, Westline 7: But this won't help. SS Wasi Tsewayo will miss about 3 weeks with a strained ribcage muscle. Tsewayo has been the Spirits' second-best hitter this year (although some distance behind Karwo). 3B Rolana Rekesu has pulled out of his early-season struggles a bit, but he'll need to fill in even more to keep the team afloat.

Sitache 4, Cheshek 3: Cheshek SP Risei Late left his start with elbow discomfort, and a few days later would have surgery to remove bone chips from that elbow. His status for the start of the 2024 season is up in the air - it'll be close whether he can be ready for March 1 or not.

Round 32:
Otahel City 0-5 Sh.Eagles - 2-4, 2-3, 2-6, 3-6, 2-5
...Westline 4-1 Sitache - 4-1, 5-6, 9-4, 8-5, 12-7(11)
...National 1-4 Semyof - 3-4, 1-2(11), 7-5, 2-4, 4-12
....Fampalo 2-3 A.Spirits - 7-8, 1-7, 3-6, 4-3, 11-7
....Cheshek 3-2 Mighty Oaks - 7-1, 1-3, 2-1, 5-1, 3-7
.......Meka 2-3 Tsapna - 1-6, 8-4(10), 2-3, 4-3, 8-12
.......Muni 3-2 Kupore - 1-2, 4-3(11), 1-4, 8-6(11), 6-1
.....Keleri 3-2 Akashemo - 6-1, 1-4, 3-2(11), 4-1, 7-9
.....Lutrul 1-4 Pasataki - 8-2, 6-7, 0-8, 8-9, 4-6
..Amnanache 3-2 BK Kepmem - 1-2(10), 2-5, 3-1, 8-1, 7-3

August awards:

Batter of the Month: Aroketsil Spirits 1B Peku Karwo - .383, 9 HR, 25 RBI, 26 R. Not much more to say about his season, other than that it's a shame his teammates haven't held up their end.

Pitcher of the Month: Keleri SP Shaltseri Kalorotiha - 5-1, 1.49 ERA, 38 K, 42.1 IP, .205 BAA in six starts. Kalorotiha didn't allow more than 2 runs in any start in August and only walked 2 batters the entire month, getting an impressive number of ground balls.

Rookie of the Month: Tsapna LF Uoro Toyerno - .362, 4 HR, 29 RBI, 14 R. His third time winning this award on the season - he has overtaken Karwo as the league's RBI leader too.

Nothing too extreme this week, as no team was better than 7-3 or worse than 3-7. A good result for Fampalo, with their series win over Kupore taking them out of the relegation zone, at least for now.

Week 17 games are rematches of the games that were played aaaaalll the way back in Week 1. Most notably, that features the top 2 teams going against one another in round 33, and a couple of big relegation battles in round 34.

Round 33:
Shunna Municipal vs. Keleri
Amnanache vs. Fampalo
Otahel City vs. Meka
Akashemo United vs. Semyof
Lutrul vs. Cheshek

Week 17: September 9-20, 2023

Round 33:
.......Muni 4-1 Keleri - 4-1(10), 10-7, 4-6, 6-3, 11-8(10)
..Amnanache 5-0 Fampalo - 4-3, 5-3, 15-0, 15-4, 5-2
Otahel City 2-3 Meka - 6-4, 2-6, 7-8, 1-10, 6-5(10)
...Akashemo 3-2 Semyof - 6-2, 2-8, 4-3, 4-3, 2-6
.....Lutrul 1-4 Cheshek - 5-13, 6-11, 0-2, 3-2, 4-5
.....Tsapna 2-3 Sitache - 1-3, 7-8, 5-2, 7-1, 10-0
Mighty Oaks 4-1 BK Kepmem - 4-3, 3-2, 10-4, 6-1, 6-12
...Pasataki 1-4 National - 10-1, 1-7, 1-5, 3-10, 4-9
..A.Spirits 1-4 Sh.Eagles - 3-2, 2-5, 0-4, 5-12, 4-11
.....Kupore 1-4 Westline - 6-1, 1-5, 1-5, 3-6, 3-5

The Galaxy pulled within three games of National after a series-opening 10-1 win, then saw that all slip away with four straight losses at the National Stadium.

Cheshek 13, Lutrul 5: Cheshek CF Tihyla Pohape crushed three homers and drove in 6 as part of a late-inning barrage for Cheshek. His team trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the 6th but erupted for 11 runs in the next three innings.

Shunna Municipal 4, Keleri 1: Muni are shutting down SP Latsal Chatsol for the season with a partial labrum tear, with this being the game it was suffered in. He does appear that he'll be ready for the start of next season, though.

Shunna Eagles 12, Aroketsil Spirits 5: Eagles OF Okekola Narupu had a 3-homer game here as well, all three two-run shots. He also added a sac fly to record 7 RBI in total, same as the Shunna margin of victory.

Round 34:
...Westline 3-2 Tsapna - 4-3, 8-3, 2-6, 6-4, 3-4
..Sh.Eagles 3-2 Kupore - 6-2, 5-6, 12-2, 9-0, 6-7
.......Meka 2-3 Lutrul - 7-11, 10-0, 6-11, 1-4, 6-2

...National 2-3 Akashemo - 3-6, 5-12, 3-4, 7-0, 7-5(11)
.....Semyof 2-3 Mighty Oaks - 3-10, 8-9, 6-2, 2-1, 1-2(10)
....Fampalo 1-4 Otahel City - 0-6, 4-6, 5-6, 4-5, 7-5
....Sitache 1-4 A.Spirits - 10-12, 7-6, 5-7(10), 6-7, 7-15
....Cheshek 3-2 Muni - 11-3, 6-7, 3-2(11), 5-1, 2-6
..BK Kepmem 2-3 Pasataki - 10-11, 4-10, 10-5, 2-12, 9-5

Pasataki Galaxy 12, BK Kepmem 2: Star Kepmem 3B Kala Koshynae was hit by a pitch from Pasataki's Rani Kireo, breaking his left wrist and ending his season prematurely. Kepmem doesn't have that much left to play for, but that's a bummer. LF Faruo Ayekrea had just returned at the end of last week's series against Amnanache.

Kupore 7, Shunna Eagles 6: A third 3-homer game on the week, this one from Kupore 1B Pifipyku Metseto. All three were solo homers, but Kupore still needed every run they could get in this series finale.

A disaster week for Fampalo sees them go to the bottom, while Akashemo again climb out of the relegation zone. I have no idea what's going to happen with the bottom three places when all is said and done! Akashemo's breakout star, LF Tseiriki Tushifo, had eight home runs this week to leap ahead of Peku Karwo in the home run race as well. Good week up there!

In the season's penultimate week, our three title contenders begin with tough home series (and local rivalries in the case of both Muni/National and Amnanache/Westline), then go out on the road. I suppose it's possible for National to clinch the title in the next post, though that would be pretty unlikely. On the other end of the table, an early-week series between Otahel City and Aroketsil Spirits looks vital.

Round 35:
Lutrul vs. Sitache
Akashemo United vs. BK Kepmem
Meka vs. Mighty Oaks
Otahel City vs. Aroketsil Spirits
Shunna Municipal vs. National
Keleri vs. Pasataki Galaxy
Amnanache vs. Westline
Tsapna vs. Fampalo
Cheshek vs. Shunna Eagles
Kupore vs. Semyof

Round 36:
Pasataki Galaxy vs. Akashemo United
Aroketsil Spirits vs. Shunna Municipal

Mighty Oaks vs. Kupore
Sitache vs. Meka
Shunna Eagles vs. Keleri

Westline vs. Otahel City
Fampalo vs. Cheshek
National vs. Lutrul

Week 18: September 21-October 2, 2023

Round 35:
.....Lutrul 4-1 Sitache - 10-1, 12-8, 15-4, 8-4, 8-9
...Akashemo 1-4 BK Kepmem - 7-8, 3-6, 1-3, 0-2, 6-5
.......Meka 1-4 Mighty Oaks - 4-3, 4-7, 1-7, 2-4, 5-6
Otahel City 1-4 A.Spirits - 9-4, 3-4, 7-9, 0-8, 1-9
.......Muni 1-4 National - 0-2, 2-10, 3-4, 3-2, 1-4
.....Keleri 1-4 Pasataki - 3-9, 10-7, 3-7, 1-2, 4-7
..Amnanache 3-2 Westline - 2-1, 1-9, 6-4, 2-3, 6-3
.....Tsapna 5-0 Fampalo - 6-1, 3-1, 11-6, 2-0, 9-5
....Cheshek 3-2 Sh.Eagles - 6-7, 4-2, 5-3, 3-10, 6-5
.....Kupore 1-4 Semyof - 3-9, 5-1, 4-10, 0-11, 1-3

Westline lose a little ground here with a home series loss, dropping from 5 games back to 7 with 15 to play. In the relegation battle, the Spirits roar back to win four straight games after dropping the first to Otahel.

Meka 4, Mighty Oaks 3: Meka's #2 starter, Katelo Measi, outdueling Oaks ace Notsimi Feshasu, blew out his UCL in this win, and had Tommy John surgery later in the week. He's likely to miss nearly all of the 2024 season, if not all of it.

National 4, Shunna Municipal 3: Same score, same result. National's Wicharu Chishatopi also needed to undergo Tommy John surgery after leaving this start. Despite not being part of the National rotation preview at the start of the season, Chishatopi made 32 starts this season due to injuries. National have quite a good rotation just on their IL at the moment, so it's pretty remarkable that they are where they are.

Semyof 11, Kupore 0: A shutout for Semyof's Chasolo Latemohi, with 6 hits scattered. Twice, Kupore hitters doubled with a man on first base, but neither play brought a run home.

Round 36:
...Pasataki 5-0 Akashemo - 4-1, 11-9(10), 7-6, 6-2, 8-2
..A.Spirits 2-3 Muni - 10-1, 5-6, 2-3, 5-6, 6-2
..BK Kepmem 3-2 Tsapna - 3-2, 5-3, 8-6, 0-1, 3-5
Mighty Oaks 2-3 Kupore - 8-6(10), 1-3, 6-0, 4-5, 3-8
....Sitache 3-2 Meka - 9-5, 11-0, 8-3, 7-8, 3-7
..Sh.Eagles 1-4 Keleri - 1-2, 1-5, 4-11, 3-7, 4-3
.....Semyof 3-2 Amnanache - 4-2, 12-3, 10-1, 4-5, 1-5
...Westline 5-0 Otahel City - 7-0, 4-2, 5-2, 7-2, 3-2
....Fampalo 1-4 Cheshek - 3-17, 3-7, 2-7, 3-2, 10-18
...National 5-0 Lutrul - 13-6, 7-4(10), 6-2, 9-4, 3-2

The top three all go on the road and get sweeps, two coming at the expense of relegation contenders.

Muni 6, Aroketsil Spirits 5 (the second one): Peku Karwo left this game with an apparent ankle injury. Aroketsil hasn't put him on the IL yet, but they will have to (I've looked ahead in the editor). That's gonna change the tone of their final week substantially.

September awards:

Batter of the Month: Aroketsil Spirits 2B Okitso Womoipo - .330, 15 HR, 26 RBI, 27 R. 15 homers is a gigantic number for someone who entered the month with just 17. He had a streak of 5 straight games with home runs, spread between last week's Sitache series and the start of this week's Otahel series.

Pitcher of the Month: Westline SP Sefti Merefife - 4-0, 1.19 ERA, 37.2 IP, 29 K/5 BB in five starts. Merefife's first start of the month was nothing special, but his last four have been sparkling - 32 innings and 1 run allowed!

Rookie of the Month: Akashemo United RP Rase Koachali - 5-1, 2 holds, 2.57 ERA, 15 K, 14 innings in 14 appearances. By coincidence, Koachali shares his name with a legendary power hitter of the 90s. The elder Rase Koachali was on Westline's 1999 title team, the only championship won by any of the current top three, and was the second EL player to hit the 500 home run mark while playing for Kupore in 2001, only beaten to the mark by a few weeks by Amnanache's Oto Moleniu. Anyway, this Rase Koachali has been a dependable lefty reliever for Akashemo, and is third in the league with 92 appearances made.

-----------------------------

National's very strong 9-1 week could have seen them clinch with results elsewhere, but the other top teams matched them on their respective weekend road trips. It would now take something pretty miraculous for National to not win their first EL title. Their run differential is also 70 ahead of Westline's, and 105 ahead of the Galaxy's, meaning they would be likely to win a tiebreaker as well.

Mighty Oaks, Cheshek, and Keleri were eliminated from championship contention this week, officially ending the Oaks' reign as three-time champs.

At the bottom of the table, for the first time since week 8, the Aroketsil Spirits are out of the relegation zone currently, thanks to a run differential that is 20 runs better than Akashemo's overall. I'd like for both teams to survive... maybe they can each pass Sitache in week 19? Hopefully the Karwo injury doesn't affect the final chase too badly.

Round 37:
Otahel City vs. BK Kepmem
Akashemo United vs. Fampalo
Lutrul vs. Shunna Eagles
Amnanache vs. Aroketsil Spirits
Tsapna vs. National
Keleri vs. Sitache
Shunna Municipal vs. Mighty Oaks
Meka vs. Semyof
Cheshek vs. Westline
Kupore vs. Pasataki Galaxy

Round 38:
Pasataki Galaxy vs. Shunna Municipal
Mighty Oaks vs. Otahel City
Aroketsil Spirits vs. Kupore
Shunna Eagles vs. Akashemo United
Semyof vs. Tsapna
Westline vs. Lutrul
Sitache vs. Amnanache
Fampalo vs. Meka
National vs. Cheshek
BK Kepmem vs. Keleri

Before we do any of that, I'll take one more look at the title/relegation/promotion races.

2022 Final Week – Pro/Rel Update (Tiers 1-3)

Elite League

Title Chase

National BC (Shunna): 121-59
Pasataki Galaxy: 115-65
Westline BC (Ransu): 114-66

Six games is an awful lot to make up in a single week. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you're relying on National losing at least that many games as a bare minimum.

Remaining series:
National: vs. Tsapna, @ Cheshek
Pasataki Galaxy: vs. Kupore, @ Shunna Municipal
Westline: vs. Cheshek, @ Lutrul

Relegation (3 teams go down)

Doesn't look good:

Otahel City: 70-110
Fampalo BC: 69-111

Still in trouble:

Kupore BC (Somno, KL): 78-102
Sitache BC: 75-105
Aroketsil Spirits: 74-106
Akashemo United: 74-106

None of this is even close to being locked in. At least one team in the "still in trouble" group must go down, with Akashemo currently holding the short straw. Kupore has really put off this "locking in their survival" thing too long, it was only about two months ago that they were a solid midtable team like Amnanache and Meka have been. Otahel probably has the toughest ride, having to face two tough teams in Kepmem and Mighty Oaks.

Key series:
Round 37: Akashemo vs. Fampalo
Round 38: Kupore vs. Spirits

Second League

Promotion (3 teams go up)

Clinched:

Hokrof BC: 122-58

It will be a well-deserved return to EL form for Hokrof after they completely blitzed the 2L all season long, with the league's best offense and best pitching staff. CF Myna Kylchi was lured away from the three rings he won with Mighty Oaks to lead this team in the Second League, and that seems to have worked out great for him.

All but clinched:

Mithazni BC (Hefem, EM): 113-67
Nokir BC (Tenshemaho, ZA): 111-69

Nokir was dead even with Takanse BC at the last update, but they have pulled 6 games ahead with 10 to play (Mithazni 8 games ahead). Nokelto Scouts and BK Swans Menmapa are both mathematically alive for promotion as well but I wouldn't bank on any of that.

Key series:
Round 37: Nokelto Scouts vs. Nokir, Takanse vs. Mithazni

Relegation (4 teams go down)

Clinched:

Onesti BC (Oyefit, CA): 65-115
Yasral BC (Ransu): 60-120

Doesn't look good:

Pelpitimochu United (Pelpitimochu, TA): 78-102
Sunoki Hearts (Ransu): 72-108

Don't screw it up now:

Yoho Bears (Yoho, HO): 82-98
Nokelto United (Nokelto, CA): 82-98
Fese BC (Susekyemep, ZA): 81-99
Killitash Bayside (Killitash, ZA): 80-100

Sunoki Hearts would need a miracle to survive relegation in their first ever 2L season, while Pelpitimochu United could definitely still hang on. There are quite a few series between these teams in the final week, so wins and losses will be had in fairly equal measure.

Key series:
Round 37: Pelpitimochu vs. Yasral, Onesti vs. Sunoki Hearts, Yoho Bears vs. Killitash Bayside
Round 38: Sunoki Hearts vs. Nokelto United, Yasral vs. Onesti I guess

Northern Premier League

Promotion (2 teams go up)

In the mix:

Sowichark United (Sowichark, HO): 112-68
Fachi BC (Hokrof, TA): 110-70
Alilia Captains (Alilia, CA): 108-72

Still possible:

Hiolye United (Hiolye, HO): 104-76
Pale BC (Pale, TA): 101-79

No team has been able to run away with the NPL this season. Alilia has the most pedigree of the top 3 teams, and the easiest remaining schedule too, so the opportunity to make up that two-game deficit is there. Pale will have something to say about the promotion race, though actually making it is near-impossible given they would probably need to go 10-0.

Key series:
Round 37: Fachi vs. Pale
Round 38: Pale vs. Sowichark United

Relegation (4 teams go down)

Clinched:

Fure BC (Fure, FH): 66-114

In the mix:

Lempisho United (Lempisho, CA): 78-102
Hokrof Beavers (Hokrof, TA): 76-104
Sakse BC (Sakse, HO): 76-104
Lisa United (Lisa, RP): 76-104

Maybe in danger:

Oyefit BC (Oyefit, CA): 82-98

Fure, Hokrof Beavers, and Sakse all were promoted from the 4th-tier NSL last year, and at least a couple of them will go back down it seems. Lempisho definitely has the edge over the other three, with a two game lead. Oyefit needed a last-week comeback to survive relegation last season, overcoming a 3-game deficit, and now they're in the reverse position needing only to hold on to a six-game margin.

Key series:
Round 37: Oyefit vs. Fure
Round 38: Sakse vs. Lisa United

Southern Premier League

Promotion (2 teams go up)

Clinched:

Wichku BC (Aksa, ZA): 123-57

In the mix:

Killitash Stars (Killitash, ZA): 108-72
Mamtul Wolves (Mamtul, EM): 107-73
Feshuyalya BC (Feshuyalya, PI): 106-74

One of these three will go up, with 3 other teams still mathematically alive but needing to make up gaps of 9 or 10 games. None of these teams will play each other in the final week, and the schedule difficulty is about the same across the board.

Relegation (4 teams go down)

Clinched:

Hefem Rangers (Hefem, EM): 63-117
Takelehun BC (Shennika-Takelehun, ZA): 45-135

All but clinched:

Sapphire BC (Pasataki, ZA): 75-105

In danger:

Sheshu BC (Sheshu, EE): 83-97
Killitash Giants (Killitash, ZA): 82-98
South Shore Aksa (Aksa, ZA): 80-100

Key series:
Round 38: Sheshu vs. South Shore, Killitash Giants vs. Hefem Rangers

One of the danger teams will go down, or two if Sapphire pulls off a miracle. South Shore is my personal favorite - when I picture myself as a Lokasi person, Aksa is my home city and South Shore is the team I'm a fan of.

Week 19, part 1: October 3-9, 2023

Splitting rounds 37 and 38 for a little drama. Entering this final week, National's magic number to clinch their first EL title is five, with Pasataki currently in second place but six games behind. The weekly opener had no effect on either the title race or the relegation race (Meka vs. Semyof), so I'll be starting recaps on the 4th.

In the relegation race, Sitache currently holds a one-game lead over both Akashemo United and Aroketsil Spirits, and Otahel City & Fampalo are a few games further back. Any of these teams could still hang on, but only two of the five really can.

The Title Race

October 4:
National 2, Tsapna 1
Kupore 17, Pasataki Galaxy 5
Westline 8, Cheshek 6

National's magic number falls to 3 with both their game and Pasataki's going the right way. The Galaxy and Westline are now tied for second.

October 5:
National 7, Tsapna 2
Kupore 9, Pasataki Galaxy 6
Westline 6, Cheshek 4

In their loss to Westline, Cheshek's Ketso Kofmi became the first EL player in 16 years to reach 100 steals in a season.

October 6:
Pasataki Galaxy 6, Kupore 3
Cheshek 11, Westline 2

National and Tsapna were off today, so there was no opportunity to clinch, but the magic number drops to 1.

October 7:
National 5, Tsapna 2
Pasataki Galaxy 9, Kupore 3
Cheshek 5, Westline 2

National BC are the 2023 Elite League champions!

National's game went final just before the other two, so they get to clinch their first title on their own terms (though they would have needed both to lose). With 7 games remaining, seems as though they would have got there anyway.

The Relegation Race

October 4:
Aroketsil Spirits 4, Amnanache 3
Keleri 6, Sitache 4 (10 innings)
Fampalo 4, Akashemo United 3
BK Kepmem 6, Otahel City 2

Big win for the Spirits pulling them a game ahead of Akashemo and even with Sitache. Sitache battled back from down 4-1 in the late innings, but a costly error in extras allowed Keleri to win it.

October 5:
Aroketsil Spirits 3, Amnanache 2
Sitache 7, Keleri 6
Akashemo United 6, Fampalo 1
BK Kepmem 4, Otahel City 3

Wins for teams 16-18 and losses for teams 19 & 20. Otahel and Fampalo are now 6 games back with 8 games to play, not looking great.

October 6:
Amnanache 9, Aroketsil Spirits 6
Keleri 13, Sitache 11
BK Kepmem 12, Otahel City 11 (10 innings)

Devastating losses for both Otahel City and Sitache:
  • Otahel City led 7-0 and 10-5 early on, but their bullpen couldn't hold it, but that's not as bad as it can get:
  • Keleri completed one of the biggest comebacks the EL has probably ever seen, erasing an 11-0 deficit after the seventh inning by scoring four in the 8th and nine runs in the 9th.

Fampalo and Akashemo were off today, which pulled Akashemo a half-game closer to safety.

October 7:
Aroketsil Spirits 3, Amnanache 1 (7 innings)
Keleri 10, Sitache 1
Akashemo United 6, Fampalo 2
Otahel City 6, BK Kepmem 3

The early call of the Spirits/Amnanache game would probably be controversial if we saw it happen in real life - the Mighty Oaks game across town was able to be completed through the rain.

Akashemo pulls a half-game ahead of Sitache, putting them into the relegation zone.

With their win over Takanse, Mithazni BC is the second team to clinch promotion to next season's Elite League. Nokir has not clinched yet, thanks to losing 4 out of 5 against Nokelto Scouts this round, but it still looks likely that they will be the third.

October 8:
Keleri 3, Sitache 2
Fampalo 8, Akashemo United 3

October 9:
Amnanache 3, Aroketsil Spirits 2 (11 innings)
Fampalo 2, Akashemo United 0
Otahel City 8, BK Kepmem 2

Fampalo and Otahel each won their last two games this round to, technically, stay alive. Both teams are 4 games back of safety with 5 to play.

Here's how it looks in toto:

Round 37:
Otahel City 2-3 BK Kepmem - 2-6, 3-4, 11-12(10), 6-3, 8-2
...Akashemo 2-3 Fampalo - 3-4, 6-1, 6-2, 3-8, 0-2
.....Lutrul 3-2 Sh.Eagles - 6-2, 9-1, 2-3, 5-4, 3-8
..Amnanache 2-3 A.Spirits - 3-4, 2-3, 9-6, 1-3, 3-2(11)
.....Tsapna 1-4 National - 1-2, 2-7, 2-5, 7-1, 3-4
.....Keleri 4-1 Sitache - 6-4(10), 6-7, 13-11, 10-1, 3-2
.......Muni 2-3 Mighty Oaks - 1-6, 1-7, 0-6, 2-1, 5-0
.......Meka 1-4 Semyof - 2-4, 3-12, 2-3, 8-9, 5-1
....Cheshek 3-2 Westline - 6-8, 4-6, 11-2, 5-2, 6-5
.....Kupore 2-3 Pasataki - 17-5, 9-6, 3-6, 3-9, 2-7

Cheshek 6, Westline 5: Cheshek CL Chysho Sofiulo ties the all-time Elite League saves record with his 446th. It's a bit surprising that the record is that low, but I guess Sofiulo is the guy who's going to push it to new heights. He has the time advantage, having become the closer at Keleri when he was just 17 years old - he's still just 25.

Week 19, part 2: October 10-14, 2023

The title race is over, but there is still much to be determined. With 5 games left to play, there is not a single team guaranteed to be relegated from this year's Elite League. It's gonna come down to so little between these bottom teams - time to take the plunge and see what happens.

As a side note, OOTP25 crashed about 4 different times while trying to simulate this last week, so I'm getting some peeks into the multiverse as well.

The Relegation Race

October 10:
Meka 4, Fampalo 3
Amnanache 4, Sitache 3
Akashemo United 2, Shunna Eagles 1
Kupore 2, Aroketsil Spirits 1
Mighty Oaks 5, Otahel City 4 (10 innings)

I mean, my goodness. All five games decided by a single run, and all except for Meka/Fampalo changing hands in the final innings. Kupore 3B Misote Teshelo, a former Spirit himself and a player who was injured almost the whole season, hit a walkoff home run in probably the most dramatic of the five games.

Akashemo's win, combined with Otahel and Fampalo losses, officially confirms the relegation of both teams. Goodbye to both Otahel City BC and Fampalo BC. I'll have more to say about both in the post-mortem.

October 11:
Amnanache 2, Sitache 1
Akashemo United 4, Shunna Eagles 3 (10 innings)
Kupore 6, Aroketsil Spirits 3

Akashemo move ahead of the other two teams here with a walkoff win, this one on a throwing error by Eagles 2B Sawita Pichake. Akashemo's Tseiriki Tushifo hit his 70th home run in this game, becoming the first EL player to hit the mark since Kupore's Kiucha Lopelo in 2017. Lopelo is an everyday starter with Hokrof, so he'll be back next season.

October 12:
Sitache 6, Amnanache 2
Shunna Eagles 7, Akashemo United 5
Kupore 8, Aroketsil Spirits 2

Sitache being the only winner means they pull even with the Spirits, though Aroketsil's run differential is substantially better. They'll need to actually pull ahead of them in the next two days. Akashemo is just one game ahead of the pair, with a run difference in the middle, so one more win will put them surely ahead of Sitache.

October 13:
Sitache 8, Amnanache 6
Akashemo United 3, Shunna Eagles 2
Kupore 8, Aroketsil Spirits 7 (10 innings)

Now Sitache have pulled ahead of the Spirits, in heartbreaking fashion for Aroketsil - with two outs in the 9th inning, up 6-5, the Spirits' Ireapi Shypu allowed three singles to load the bases, then balked on the first pitch to Hekewi Ruicho, tying the game. Kupore was able to score an extra run in the 10th inning to win on top of the zombie runner.

It was closer than expected thanks to hard charges from the chasing pack, but with their 114th win of the season, Nokir BC (Tenshemaho, ZA) clinch the third and final promotion place from the Second League. They are one of the EL's historic clubs, so it's right for them to be up here, and it'll be the first time since 2020 that the nation's second-largest city is actually represented in the top flight.

Akashemo United have officially survived relegation - it's either Sitache or the Spirits, with Sitache being ahead by a game. Let's roll the tape:

October 14:
Sitache 8, Amnanache 1
Aroketsil Spirits 4, Kupore 1

The Spirits avoid the sweep, but it's too little, too late. Sitache win their final three games of the season on the road, of which they eventually needed all three! With that, we sadly do say goodbye to the Aroketsil Spirits, who had been in the EL uninterrupted for fourteen years and finished 3rd just two seasons ago.

With all the games together:

Round 38:
...Pasataki 3-2 Muni - 17-3, 8-9(11), 5-2, 3-4, 6-1
Mighty Oaks 1-4 Otahel City - 5-4(10), 1-7, 1-4, 0-2, 3-4
..A.Spirits 1-4 Kupore - 1-2, 3-6, 2-8, 7-8(10), 4-1
..Sh.Eagles 2-3 Akashemo - 1-2, 3-4(10), 7-5, 2-3, 5-4
.....Semyof 2-3 Tsapna - 6-3, 2-5, 0-12, 5-4(10), 4-6(10)
...Westline 3-2 Lutrul - 8-2, 8-4, 6-7(10), 8-1, 3-6
....Sitache 3-2 Amnanache - 3-4, 1-2, 6-2, 8-6, 8-1
....Fampalo 1-4 Meka - 3-4, 7-3, 4-9, 3-8, 1-2
...National 3-2 Cheshek - 1-2, 6-3, 11-4, 12-8(10), 3-4
..BK Kepmem 0-5 Keleri - 1-6, 3-4(10), 1-4, 2-3, 5-8

Cheshek 4, National 3: With a save on the final day of the season, Chysho Sofiulo becomes the EL's all-time saves leader! He has 447 of them over 9 years of closing, with plenty more career to go.

Standings..........W..L

That'll do it for the 2023 Elite League season. Now, for the end-of-season stuff: a brief recap for each team like I did at the halfway point, then the leaderboards, lower-league results, and awards before we get into the 2023-24 offseason!

2023 Year in Review

Fampalo BC
73-117 (20th)
Offense: 20th, Pitching: 13th
What went right: The rotation was not a last-place sort of rotation; usually, it feels like pitching is the downfall for last-place teams. They were quite injured by season's end, but they got good seasons from Kimyu Mekuri, Wyshuo Rainai, and Wokyo Nuchipasora. I though it would be Mekuri's show pretty much, but it wasn't an awful unit.
What went wrong: Pretty much the entire lineup, aside from catcher Tupae Pufosa. They were the only EL team to score fewer than 700 runs and they batted just .223 as a team, a league-worst. 2B Sysak Tisoki might deserve singling out, as he went from an above-average EL hitter in 2022 to one of the worst hitters in the league this year (.201/.268/.316).

Otahel City
76-114 (19th)
Offense: 17th, Pitching: 17th
What went right: CF Toyeseshi Shocheye continued to impress, playing elite CF defense despite being up there in Lokasi years (33) and overall registering as Otahel's best position player.
What went wrong: It's difficult to pin Otahel's season on any one thing. They finished pretty much where they were projected to (80-110), it's just that they happened to be in the bottom three. Not a lot of extreme negatives here. They did really miss catcher Kiowu Salama when he was out, but backup Haha Sachan was actually better in his absence. They really should have taught one of those guys to play first, they're both quite tall.

Aroketsil Spirits
78-112 (18th)
Offense: 11th, Pitching: 19th
What went right: Peku Karwo had an even more amazing season than his 2022 MVP campaign, finishing in the top 3 of all three Triple Crown categories and winning his third batting title. Unfortunately, that might be his last action in a Spirits uniform. They also led the EL in home runs overall as a team.
What went wrong: Most everything else. The pitching staff gave up the most home runs and walks in the league, and nearly had the fewest strikeouts, edging out Meka by a single whiff. That's not a recipe for enjoyable or winning baseball. The catcher position was also an extreme weak point, with -4.8 WAR between Feko Kuishuchutso and Enalo Faseltsa.

Sitache BC
79-111 (17th)
Offense: 4th, Pitching: 20th
What went right: Fomo Tirma is really, really good. He led the league in hits, doubles, and triples, though didn't win the batting title because he also had the most at bats. He shows no repercussions of the concussion that wiped out about half of his 2022 season. There's no chance that Sitache would have survived relegation if they hadn't lured him in from Kupore last offseason. Given that they were playing hitters out of position pretty often, it's really impressive how good their offense was.
What went wrong: Well, they were playing hitters out of position pretty often, so they were the league's worst defensive team by far (if I'm reading the stats right, it's estimated that their defense alone cost them about ten wins). Hard to make the pitching staff look good if you can't convert outs. Sure enough, despite having the most runs allowed by about half a run per game, their team FIP (defense-independent) was only third-worst in the league.

Akashemo United
79-111 (16th)
Offense: 16th, Pitching: 15th
What went right: It was unknown how LF Tseiriki Tushifo would adapt to the EL after spending the first three years of his career with Losap BC in the Northern Premier League, but he adapted extremely well, winning the home run crown with 71 bombs. Catcher Kawachu Tan also took a big step forward in his age-18 season, both in hitting and in managing the pitching staff.
What went wrong: Center field was a black hole of production, with Hypuse Toyerno and Mesichi Yelishike combining for 249 starts (so, many times they were playing together) and -3.7 WAR. Not much else was obviously wrong, Akashemo was just devoid of elite positives that they ended up a bit blah.

Kupore BC
84-106 (15th)
Offense: 15th, Pitching: 14th
What went right: I won't say they didn't miss Fomo Tirma, because they definitely did; but, the middle of the lineup was still formidable with 2B/3B Koraralu Fatsi and LF Takipuse Shihoe.
What went wrong: The overall strength of the lineup was diminished for sure - this used to be a really feared offensive team and it just isn't now with much of their depth gone. They also could really use a difference-making starting pitcher.

Shunna Municipal
85-105 (14th)
Offense: 18th, Pitching: 9th
What went right: A genuinely good pitching staff for Muni this year, which fell off slightly in the second half, but mainly just due to injuries.
What went wrong: The team gave 467 starts to sub-replacement-level position players this season, and didn't have the elite hitting to counterbalance them. The team's best overall hitters, LF Tae Hefie and SS Tilutsu Hofohe, were more in the 110-120 OPS+ range than anything game-changing.

Shunna Eagles
86-104 (13th)
Offense: 14th, Pitching: 12th
What went right: It is funny that in the season preview, I felt that 13th was the Platonic ideal of where the Eagles should finish, and then it's exactly where they did finish (although then I actually picked them 12th). Anyway, the bullpen was supposed to be a big weakness for the Eagles, and it didn't really turn out that way despite going closer-by-committee. Catcher Lakiru Shufaho was also a big breakout star, establishing himself as a top-tier catcher after coming over from Keleri last season.
What went wrong: The Eagles were decimated by injuries, particularly to the rotation. They really relied on their depth in that department to get through innings - three starters missed over half the season.

Lutrul BC
89-101 (12th)
Offense: T-8th, Pitching: 16th
What went right: CF Ipitashi Rerawe, 5-time MVP (2 of those with Lutrul) actually played a full season without any major injuries, the first time he's done that since his last MVP season of 2019. Bad news: he's a free agent this offseason. He could definitely come back but there are some teams with gaping center field vacancies that might throw money at him (Kepmem comes to mind, for one).
What went wrong: pitching and defense, just a lack of difference-makers on that side of the ball. 3B Tsosotal Mpetu was forced into a move to right field, where he was a mess. As a Cardinals fan, I'm dismayed by how much his stat line looks like Jordan Walker.

Amnanache BC
91-99 (11th)
Offense: 19th, Pitching: 6th
What went right: Peche Iyikio is a genuine star at the keystone. This season, he sacrificed just a blip of contact and hit nearly twice as many home runs, a definite net positive, and was quite a good defender at second too.
What went wrong: On the whole, though, the team defense was quite bad. That's a huge no-no for a team whose calling card is supposed to be its starting rotation, even if many of them are strikeout artists. I think if this team was even average defensively, they'd have finished above .500.

Meka BC
91-99 (10th)
Offense: 7th, Pitching: 18th
What went right: Given that this was their first ever year in the EL, 10th place has to be a success. The lineup was solid, with leadoff hitter and 2B Lesafe Tsewayo as the clear leader - he had a 40/40 season.
What went wrong: The rotation was much weaker than expected, with highly-touted rookie Fum Pese living up to the hype, but almost nothing else positive to speak of. With Katelo Measi slated to miss almost all of the 2024 season, they'll need reinforcements badly.

Semyof BC
91-99 (9th)
Offense: 12th, Pitching: 10th
What went right: Is Semyof back? That's what the headlines will be saying, given the Yankees-esque treatment they typically get in the press. Prior to their surprise relegation in 2019, they'd only finished in the bottom half of the EL once ever. This time around, back in the big time, Semyof were a bunch of scrappy burners on the basepaths, ranking in the top 5 in both steals and baserunning value.
What went wrong: For a team that's so fast, they didn't show it on defense. Their underlying pitching numbers were pretty great, but it averaged out to mediocre run prevention. Not nearly as bad as the likes of Amnanache or Sitache, but not good. The outfield was also pretty subpar, with only LF Kysha Temyl being worth retaining - he didn't start the year in the everyday lineup but finished it batting cleanup.

BK Kepmem
101-89 (8th)
Offense: 6th, Pitching: 11th
What went right: A lot - Kepmem have achieved a new franchise feat by finishing in the top half of the Elite League in consecutive years for the first time. Their twin stars, LF Faruo Ayekrea and 3B Kala Koshynae, both were even better than they were last year, and Teshepo Tefasa was a breakout star on the mound, leading the league in wins.
What went wrong: Man oh man, the bottom of the lineup is so bad. Kepmem would kill to get even replacement-level production at catcher and center field. If it were my team, I'd be moving Ayekrea to center - he's capable enough to play out there that it'd be worth it. But I think they're gonna try to outspend that problem instead.

Tsapna BC
102-88 (7th)
Offense: T-8th, Pitching: 4th
What went right: Lawori El continues to be one of the best all-around players in the world, and this year he was joined by rookie sensation Uoro Toyerno in left field. Toyerno is a much more offensive player, but that's what Tsapna need.
What went wrong: It's hard to put my finger on, but Tsapna didn't really feel like themselves this year. Part of that is the pitching injuries - Setsinak Perano and Mua Wyranu missed huge chunks of the season, almost all of it in Wyranu's case. But, the bottom half of their lineup felt pretty replaceable too.

Cheshek BC
106-84 (6th)
Offense: 10th, Pitching: 5th
What went right: Until the last week of the season, it looked like Cheshek was going to achieve their first ever top-5 finish, but they had to settle for tying their 2016 squad by finishing sixth. Superstar-in-the-making Syshawe Arachihe continued to improve, drawing over 200 walks and leading the league in OBP while transitioning from RF to 1B. Even the outfielders that I put down in the midseason report rebounded and hit quite well in the second half.
What went wrong: they'd still like to upgrade the outfield this offseason, mind you, and third base too. Pitching health was also an issue, with only Pilau Rima making a full slate of starts.

Keleri BC
109-81 (5th)
Offense: 5th, Pitching: 7th
What went right: Keleri continued their streak of finishing in the top 6 for 32 consecutive seasons (that is, all but one of them). The young top of the rotation, Nokolo and Kalorotiha, were both quite good despite being teenagers.
What went wrong: The bullpen was supposed to steal Keleri games, and it never did, just being OK (8th in bullpen ERA). Unlike almost every team, Keleri only had one sub-replacement player on the whole roster, the backup catcher. Of course, that makes it harder to find upgrades, which will be maddening for Keleri fans that are used to winning championships every other year now that it's been 5 years without one.

Mighty Oaks BC
112-78 (4th)
Offense: 13th, Pitching: 3rd
What went right: Pecho Tsytemoi moved from the bullpen into the rotation in May, and he was quite good, looking like a building block for the next great Oaks team. (He had been a starter at Fampalo for three years, so I guess the signs were there.)
What went wrong: The lineup seems to have gone a little stale this year. None of their underlying stats suggested their run-scoring would be as low as 13th, but that's how it shook out (maybe just a sequencing problem). Their continued insistence on giving at bats to Tsorope Mametsiu must be infuriating - he's a great shortstop but it's not worth it when someone like 2B Niresilo Fetiloa has to ride the bench because of it.

Westline BC
119-71 (3rd)
Offense: 3rd, Pitching: 1st
What went right: A lot of little things. Everyone who got regular ABs for Westline was at least OK, and I mean everyone. The pitching rotation was good enough that a perfectly good starter like Chapeo Mematsa, acquired at the deadline from Sitache, has been sitting on the reserve roster for months. The top three (Mitonone, Merefife, K. Awia) were absolutely sterling this year.
What went wrong: Did anything go wrong for Westline? I'm not sure. They were pretty healthy... well, they were pretty streaky. Westline absolutely blitzed the league in April, May, and September, but was average in the other months. They were in first place for about two weeks in late May-early June. If they straighten that out, Westline will be a championship team soon.

Pasataki Galaxy
121-69 (2nd)
Offense: 1st, Pitching: 8th
What went right: Can't believe I said "not the league's very best lineup" in the season preview, they've proved me wrong yet again. You can seemingly pencil Pasataki in to score 1100 runs a year, which is just a wild number, but they hit it yet again this season.
What went wrong: oh yeah, pitching. The Galaxy bullpen was pretty good, but the rotation was a disaster for a team this good otherwise. Aro Ipo missed most of the year, returning just to make two "stretch-him-out" starts at the end of September. It's not a good thing when your top pitcher by WAR is listed as a mop-up reliever.

National BC
128-62 (1st)
Offense: 2nd, Pitching: 2nd
What went right: Nearly everything that numbers can tell you. National's hitters ranked either 1st or 2nd in every major stat, barring walks and steals. Their bullpen was the league's best, and they were a top-tier defensive team too. Just a real team effort all around with no weak points to speak of.
What went wrong: It's amazing that National's pitching staff was as good as it was given how many injuries they had. Literally, all five of their theoretical best rotation are currently injured, and two will miss the start of next season (Lohy Awia, Wicharu Chishatopi). The guys who stepped up deserve a lot of credit, particularly Rilokena Shelok, Latsal Awia, and Tashi Watafo.

2023 Lokasi Elite League Champions - National BC

I don't use player pictures (to save bandwidth, there are tens of thousands of players here), so consider this the National championship team photo. There are a few duplicate jersey numbers - four players assigned #31, for example. In each case, only one player is actually on the active roster at any moment I guess.

2023 Elite League Final Leaderboards

Batting race:
1B Peku Karwo - .354
LF Faruo Ayekrea - .353
1B Fomo Tirma - .351

Karwo and Tirma have now combined to win the last five batting titles between them - remarkable consistency.

Home runs:
LF Tseiriki Tushifo - 71
1B Peku Karwo - 61
3B Koraralu Fatsi - 49
3B Kala Koshynae - 49

This pace slowed down a little in the final quarter, unless your name is Tseiriki Tushifo. Karwo only hit five home runs in the last 40 team games, and both he and Koshynae finished the year injured.

RBI:
1B Wia Merefife - 167
1B Safishi Ifata - 154
1B Peku Karwo - 153
LF Uoro Toyerno - 153

Merefife, 27 has come a long way from being a sub-replacement player for the Alilia Captains a decade ago as a teenager, his first time in the EL. This is his first time leading the Elite League in any statistic.

Position player WAR:
2B Apia Lela - 13.4
2B Lawori El - 12.5
LF Faruo Ayekrea - 10.9

Despite all this, I'd still be inclined to vote for Peku Karwo as back-to-back MVP - he's 8th on this list at 9.5.

Stolen bases:
SS Ketso Kofmi - 103
2B Lawori El - 76
1B Rykitopa Tufsu - 74

Eye-popping number from Kofmi. I've been tracking his stolen base total vs. the team stealing leaderboard - on his own, Kofmi ties for 12th in the league among teams, better than Lutrul, Otahel City, Kepmem, Akashemo, Amnanache, Sitache, Muni, Aroketsil Spirits, and tied with Kupore. Cheshek were the stealin'-est team at any level of the national pyramid this season, swiping 308 bags as a club total.

ERA:
Tula Mitonone - 2.63
Kwukasho Awia - 2.65
Sefti Merefife - 2.76

A Westline podium sweep is pretty wild, I can't remember anything like this happening in this league before. This rotation was totally dominant.

Wins:
Teshepo Tefasa - 21-10
Kwukasho Awia - 20-9
Nimape Turetsotsa - 19-8
Notsimi Feshasu - 19-10
Tula Mitonone - 19-12

Tefasa was just 2-4 in the season's final quarter but had already won 19 games before that. He also led the league with 40 starts, ignoring openers.

Saves:
Chysho Sofiulo - 53
Toe Teshelo - 48
Chiamo Wirilen - 46

As mentioned, Sofiulo broke the career saves record on the last day of the season. It's up to him now to keep being an EL closer for as long as teams will have him & see how high that record can go.

Strikeouts:
Tula Mitonone - 309
Laotso Tirionu - 282
Teshepo Tefasa - 248

Mitonone was the first pitcher to rack up 300 K in a season since Musase Sofiulo had 320 for the Galaxy in 2017. The all-time record is 341, held by the legendary Wuferar Mote. (If I was going to name the Pitcher of the Year trophy after someone, it'd be Mote.)

Pitcher WAR:
Tula Mitonone - 8.5
Sefti Merefife - 6.8
Nimape Turetsotsa - 6.6

Hard to imagine anyone but Mitonone being PoY, but we'll see.

2023 Year in Review - Tiers 2-4

Let's have a look at the results from the lower leagues in 2023, down to tier 8 but starting with levels 2-4. Every league offers something a little bit different!

Second League
..........Hokrof.128 62
........Mithazni.118 72
...........Nokir.115 75
--------------------
..Nokelto Scouts.113 77
.........Takanse.110 80
...Swans Menmapa.110 80
..Ransu Shockers.104 86
.........Tishmin.101 89
......Nipte City..93 97
.........Penhara..92 98
......A.Canaries..91 99
...Tenshe.Rubies..90 100
.....Nokelto Utd..86 104
...Killi.Bayside..86 104
......Yoho Bears..85 105
............Fese..83 107
--------------------
Pelpitimochu Utd..82 108
...Sunoki Hearts..76 114
..........Onesti..70 120
..........Yasral..67 123

The teams returning to the EL in 2024 are familiar faces; Hokrof and Mithazni were both here in 2022, and Nokir is the team outside the top flight that has spent the most seasons in it. We were two games away from having all three relegated teams from last year return, which isn't the best for pyramid balance but it's better than having them all get relegated by a long shot.

All four relegated teams will go to the NPL as a result of their geography - that's always a bit interesting, but the realignment puzzles this offseason were actually pretty straightforward.

Northern Premier League
...........Fachi.117 73
...Sowichark Utd.117 73
--------------------
.Alilia Captains.115 75
......Hiolye Utd.112 78
............Pale.107 83
........Moonside.103 87
.....Ransu Ports.102 88
.......Atafe Utd..96 94
Enihaka Cyclones..96 94
....Tsutonsu Utd..95 95
...........Linir..93 97
.........Shalish..93 97
.........Loshtsi..92 98
............Kine..88 102
..........Oyefit..86 104
........Lisa Utd..81 109
--------------------
...........Sakse..81 109
....Lempisho Utd..80 110
..Hokrof Beavers..77 113
............Fure..69 121

Fachi had a quite large advantage in run differential over Sowichark (65 runs) to secure the title, though both will go to the 2L. Fachi (Hokrof) has never played at that level, while Sowichark United (Sowichark, Holo, not far from Shunna) has only played one season in the 2L.

Southern Premier League
..........Wichku.131 59
.Killitash Stars.113 77
--------------------
...Mamtul Wolves.112 78
......Feshuyalya.111 79
.........Wikyats.104 86
.........Shepero.104 86
.........Himespo.101 89
.........Amkutan.100 90
...........Hilas..97 93
.........Sokroch..97 93
.........Rasenok..96 94
.........Mewofes..92 98
....Tinshenikosh..91 99
........Sachlihe..91 99
Killitash Giants..90 100
South Shore Aksa..88 102
--------------------
..........Sheshu..87 103
........Sapphire..78 112
...Hefem Rangers..68 122
.......Takelehun..49 141

Sachlihe RF Lilo Tsatese hit more home runs this season than any player in any league, 86 of them in total, shattering the record at this level which was previously 74. Oddly, one of the players that previously held the tier-3 home run record is Setsu Tsuefo, who also holds the Elite League single-season record.

Northern Super League
.......Moshelosi.122 62
......Y.Warriors.111 73
............Lulo.109 75
...........Losap.106 78
--------------------
...........Rukip.103 81
...........Lacho.103 81
.........Tesoshi..98 86
.Kepits Bulldogs..98 86
.Sametulshem Utd..94 90
.......Fire Ants..93 91
Oshotater Rubies..92 92
........Tsatsaye..91 93
......Malshe Utd..91 93
...........Lesha..90 94
.....Onemasi Utd..90 94
............Reli..90 94
..........Alilia..88 96
.........Shusnum..87 97
....Fampalo City..84 100
Sapoyo Tortoises..80 104
--------------------
..........Motech..76 108
.........Santaku..74 110
......Afarpo Utd..69 115
...Kolansolo Utd..69 115

Lulo (Tsatsaye, Talor) is one of the strongest teams to have previously played all the way down at the state league level. They won promotion from the Talor state league into the Northwest Regional League in 1993, and have recently undergone a big surge in fortune, winning promotion four times in the last six years & now going up to the NPL for the first time in club history. Tsatsaye is just southwest of Meka, about 30 miles away. It's a strong area for teams playing way over their head in the pyramid!

Southern Super League
....Tokos City.124 60
.......Neshori.120 64
...Hechemi Utd.116 68
..Aksa Hornets.110 74
--------------------
......Sipliyak.110 74
......Yewetats.108 76
Hefem Monarchs.106 78
.....Sashrotse.103 81
......Wuhalale.100 84
......Neshpeki..99 85
.......Renfiso..99 85
.Olosharpo Utd..92 92
......NK Royan..89 95
.......Tsanmet..86 98
.....Air Force..86 98
.......Shizpos..79 105
........Neshta..79 105
.........Somno..78 106
........Rontok..77 107
...Somno Stars..74 110
--------------------
.Shepero Bulls..71 113
Mamtul Jaguars..70 114
...Hefem Lions..69 115
..........Nesi..63 121

Last year in this space, I mentioned the rise of Sipliyak, finishing 5th and nearly winning promotion back to the SPL, as part of their journey back to EL glory. This time, they came even closer, losing the run differential tiebreaker to the Hornets by just seven runs. For a team that dreams much bigger (formerly finished as high as 3rd in the EL), this must be infuriating.

2023 Year in Review - Tiers 5-6

This is where the leagues start to get more geographical, with 4 divisions at each level so smaller teams don't have to travel so much.

Here's a screenshot from the spreadsheet that I use to help me plan out which teams belong in which leagues, which I thought would be interesting to show. This in particular represents the teams from this year's 5th tier "Leagues One", with lines added to show how they were actually divided:

The boundaries of the Mideast region have changed over time, with the principle of trying not to move too many teams in realignment. For example, the two teams getting promoted from MEL1, Hertulsho BC and the Fuwarni Flames, are right next to each other in the northwesterly part of the ME's geographic footprint. The two towns are right next to each other on opposite ends of the Holo/Separun state border, with Hertulsho on the north side and Fuwarni on the south side. Years ago, it would have been way more common for those teams to end up in the Western League system (especially with Separun being a west coast state).

Much was made of Ketso Kofmi's chase for 100 steals in the Elite League, but Lathiki 3B Hypuse Merefife accomplished it in a shorter time frame, stealing 106 times in a 170-game season. Merefife was a bench player for Amnanache from 2019-21, so maybe we could see him in the EL again.

.........Irtasa..77 93
........Jesters..74 96
.....Meyee City..72 98
..........Luran..58 112

Wochlats was a team a few people liked in the original EL thread from 2017. The team's name was spelled "Wotclad" at that time, with the D representing a "th" sound, since removed from the language entirely, and the "ch" being spelled as "tc" in a way that makes me cringe looking back. They're moving into the same division as their local rival, Kolansolo United, who were just relegated from the NSL.

These eight teams have been promoted from their state leagues:

Shepero Bengals (48-12, Pilentom)
Kiyefexit Buccaneers (46-14, Lon Sifn)
BKK Tifi (43-17, Menmako)
Nofeya Jets (43-17, Separun)
Tehi City (42-18, Fyhot)
Shimnera BC (42-18, Rupakare)
Mosone (38-22, Lon Sifn)

The Giants, Bengals, and Jets (what is this, the NFL?) were all relegated from the 8th tier last season, but lucked out and get to return.

Getting multiple promotions out of your state is a rarity, even more so when it's a smaller state like Lon Sifn that just happens to straddle the Northeast and Mideast areas. Both of those teams will replace similarly-named clubs from the same city, as you might have noticed. The best team eligible for promotion was 50-10 Lokile BC, just as they were last year, but again no spot in their home state of Efiro opened up. Someday soon, fellas.

October Transactions

October 17: Manager & GM firing day, traditionally. Last year, there was only one managerial turnover, from Mighty Oaks' Kechi Mihauwy retiring. This year, not so:
  • Tsapna fired manager Kire Famha after a disappointing 7th-place finish. Famha is likely to get a job somewhere - he had an 835-495 record over seven seasons, including the 2019 Elite League title.
  • Lutrul parted ways with manager Mesopi Sechefali after four seasons. Lutrul is the archetype of a mid-table team, but I could see a delusional front office thinking that not finishing in the top 5 is the manager's fault.
  • Two of the relegated teams, Fampalo and Aroketsil Spirits, fired their managers, Fopahe Shesinua and Shakemi Yshetsea respectively. The Spirits also fired GM Pela Mpetu.
  • Finally, and most surprisingly, Galaxy manager Neshi Kolalech was let go despite finishing second. Upon inspection, he had really lost the locker room, having poor relationships listed with almost all the team's great hitters.

No huge surprises in the retirement list. Mighty Oaks SS Ukise Sekao had already announced he would retire, and that is indeed the case. The other name that stuck out to me was Keleri SP Yirowe Wulowai, 39, who was a mentor to the young fireballers at the top of that rotation this year.

Contract options/opt-out decisions:
  • Lutrul stars CF Ipitashi Rerawe & 2B Poem Meste have both opted out. Rerawe was due around $23 million for the next two seasons, while Meste forgoes $32 million over five years. Rerawe probably will beat that on the open market; Meste probably won't.
  • Mighty Oaks 1B Tylu Tsefufayalo, 36, executes his option to remain with the team for 2024 at a rate of just over $3 million. Good money for a guy who made 18 starts this year.
  • Kupore LF Takipuse Shihoe opted out of the last year of his deal at $9.4 million. Just 23, he could definitely get a big long-term deal.
  • At National, SP Lohy Awia does not exercise his opt-out, and will remain with the champs. Probably good call here since he'll be rehabbing a torn UCL until May. Good to already have a contract.
  • RF Kiowu Rorale, on the other hand, has opted out of the final 3 years, $25 million on his deal, playing just 2 years with the club after coming from Tsapna.
  • Muni's top two hitters this season, SS Tilutsu Hofohe & LF Tae Hefie, both opted out. Muni should have money to spend after surviving the EL season with their highest placement since 2017.
  • Westline catcher Epencho Posheni has also opted out, and is likely to be one of the most pursued free agents.
  • Finally, the relegation opt-outs are as painful as ever. Fampalo lose C Tupae Pufosa & 1B Rykitopa Tufsu, Otahel City lose both of their good catchers in Kiowu Salama & Haha Sachan as well as Gold Glove CF Toyeseshi Shocheye, and the Spirits had their entire star infield opt out: 1B Peku Karwo, 2B Okitso Womoipo, SS Wasi Tsewayo, & 3B Rolana Rekesu.

October 18:

Sitache acquire OF Anesa Kumoyo from Oyefit BC (NPL). Kumoyo isn't likely to start, but is listed first among the team's pinch-hitters. He has almost no power but can hit for a reasonable average.

Managerial hirings:

October 20: Tsapna hire first-time manager Tuwafo Rekute, whose prospects look good but whose resume is empty.

October 22: Lutrul hires Amnanache bench coach Yiyif Shuma as their new manager.

October 25: And finally, the Galaxy poach manager Iwata Tufsu away from Penhara BC (Second League), where he just finished in 10th place.

This is also the time for new players to be generated, and these guys can sign with whoever they like. Some of the top amateur players (15-16 years old currently) are:
  • SP Samayo Itsatuse looks like a readymade ace already, like Kes Nokolo was last offseason. He looks like a can't miss star, with somehow six plus pitches already (his game-given nickname is Hodgepodge, and that definitely fits), a high ground ball rate and projectable stuff.
  • Pitchers dominate the top of the list as a whole, with three other pitchers ranked in the top 5 amateurs: SP Ferenasi Salpe, SP Fekiu Wefo, and funky sidearm relief ace Pomi Nufeka.
  • The top hitters are in power positions: 3B Lelifi Elulfu looks like a 30-home-run hitter already, 3B Sihe Awia has a lot of room to grow offensively but has that five-star potential and literally all green personality traits, and RF Marte Choap has the kind of power/contact combination that very few guys have.
