The 1908 World Series: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Results Game 1, October 11th, 1908, National League Park Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 1-0 Lead in WS The Philadelphia Athletics powered past the hometown Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, in the opener of the World Series at National League Park today. Philadelphia starting pitcher Eddie Plank threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Athletics now lead the series 1-0. In his 103-pitch effort, Plank allowed 1 run on 4 hits over 9 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 5. "We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Plank. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at National League Park in Philadelphia. Athletics lead 1-0 Game 2, October 12th, 1908, National League Park Philadelphia Tops Philadelphia Again, 1-0 George McQuillan pitched a gem to help the Philadelphia Athletics escape with a tight 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in a low-scoring World Series contest today. The right-handed McQuillan threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Athletics on a day when their offense dried up. Philadelphia now leads the best-of-7 series 2-0. McQuillan twirled a complete game, limiting the Phillies to no runs on no hits. The right-hander struck out 1 and walked 3. "I liked his command," said Philadelphia manager Dustin Carr. "George was throwing strikes." The next game is set to be played for October 14th, 1908 at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Athletics lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 14th, 1908, Columbia Park Philadelphia Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1 Leave it to the veteran. The Philadelphia Phillies got a great start from 34-year-old right-hander Ned Garvin, as Philadelphia took the 5-2 win at Columbia Park over the series-leading Philadelphia Athletics. Garvin threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball and helped Philadelphia close their deficit to 2 games to 1 in the best-of-7 series. Philadelphia used the timely hitting of Fred Jacklitsch to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Phillies on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer. "The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Garvin. "Successful pitchers do it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Athletics lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 15th, 1908, Columbia Park Almost There: Philadelphia On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 2-1 Win The Philadelphia Athletics got a strong game from starter Eddie Plank, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win. The Athletics took the 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the World Series in a 9th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the left-handed Plank. Plank threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which gave the Athletics a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Otto Knabe was the walk-off hero for Philadelphia. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Athletics pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. "It's great when the crowd gets into it," Knabe said. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia. Athletics lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 16th, 1908, Columbia Park Philadelphia Wins to Narrow Series Deficit to 3-2 Doc White was not ready to let the World Series end. With the Philadelphia Phillies backed into a corner, the left-handed White held off the Philadelphia Athletics. He threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Phillies to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. White was in the zone all game. He frustrated Philadelphia hitters while giving the Phillies 9 innings of quality work. White threw 114 pitches, allowing 7 hits and getting 2 punchouts. "I had pretty good command out there," said White. The next game is set to be played for October 18th, 1908 at National League Park in Philadelphia. Athletics lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 18th, 1908, National League Park World Series to Philadelphia It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Philadelphia Athletics, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. The Athletics took a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at National League Park, winning their 2nd championship after taking the series 4-2. "We've got grit," said Athletics starting pitcher George McQuillan, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to." The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 98-56 record. Athletics win series 4-2 Series MVP: George McQuillan |

The 1909 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago Cubs
Results Game 1, October 10th, 1909, Bennett Park World Series Game 1 Victory for Smith and Detroit The Detroit Tigers started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting Chicago Cubs at Bennett Park by a score of 4-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Tigers right-hander Frank Smith threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball. Smith, who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, threw 111 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 1 run. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Smith said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Bennett Park in Detroit. Tigers win 1-0 Game 2, October 11th, 1909, Bennett Park Chicago Win to Pull Even With Detroit The Chicago Cubs got a complete game effort from starter Tom Hughes to move into a 1-1 tie with the Detroit Tigers in the best-of-7 World Series. The Chicago right-hander went the distance at Bennett Park, cooling off the Detroit Tigers and striking out 5 to help Chicago take the 2-0 win that knotted the series. Hughes, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was dealing all game. He kept Detroit hitters off-balance, while giving the Cubs 9 quality innings. Hughes threw 108 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 5. "Teams don't get here by being incompetent, so I really wasn't expecting this," Hughes said. "I just kept throwing and they kept missing." The next game is set to be played for October 13th, 1909 at the West Side Grounds in Chicago. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 13th, 1909, the West Side Grounds Road Win Lifts Detroit to 2-1 Lead in WS The Detroit Tigers got an exceptional performance from starter Rube Kroh, who silenced the Chicago offense en route to a 6-0 shutout win in Game 3 of the World Series today. The Cubs could never get a bead on the left-handed Kroh, who threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. The Tigers now hold a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 series. Kroh pitched a complete game for Detroit. The left-hander was charged with no runs on 8 hits. He struck out 3 during his 94-pitch performance. "We're happy," Kroh told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the West Side Grounds in Chicago. Tigers lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 13th, 1909, the West Side Grounds Raucous West Side Grounds Crowd Propels Cubs to 8-2 Victory; Series Tied at 2 The Chicago Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers, 8-2 in Game 4 of the World Series today. Making an impact was third baseman Larry Gardner, who went 3-4 with a triple and 2 doubles, while scoring 3 and driving in 3. The win moves Chicago into a 2-2 tie with Detroit in the series. In the bottom of the first, Gardner had one of his most important at-bats: a bases-clearing double off Frank Smith that staked the Cubs to a 4-1 lead. "It feels a lot better to be tied than to be behind, even if it is only one game," Chicago manager Jim Greenwood said. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the West Side Grounds in Chicago. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 14th, 1909, the West Side Grounds Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Cubs, 10-6 The Detroit Tigers got a strong 6.1 innings from right-hander Frank Owen today but failed to take Game 5 of the World Series from the Chicago Cubs. Owen held the Cubs to 2 runs on 6.1 strong innings but Chicago took the game by a score of 10-6 and now lead the best-of-7 series, 3-2. Dummy Hoy, the Chicago center fielder, contributed a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 7-3, Cubs. For the game, Hoy went 1-3 with a double, while adding 4 RBIs and scoring once. "Huge," Hoy said. "Game 5 is huge." The next game is set to be played for October 17th, 1909 at Bennett Park in Detroit. Cubs lead series, 3-2 Game 6, October 17th, 1909, Bennett Park Cubs Crowned Champions The Chicago Cubs were good enough to get past the Detroit Tigers at Bennett Park today and secure the 1st championship in franchise history. "When you wear Cubs on your shirt, you're good at something," Chicago skipper Jim Greenwood told the press. Cubs third baseman Larry Gardner was named MVP of the series after he went .304 with no home runs and 5 RBIs. "It feels totally incredible," Gardner said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment." The new champions capped off a great season with a 3-1 victory over the Tigers to win the World Series 4-2. Cubs win series 4-2 Series MVP: Larry Gardner (Let's hope the Cubs don't have to wait as long as RL for another title... ![]() |
