Off on the Wrong Foot
For the first time in franchise history, the Mets bowed on Opening Day, getting crushed in Cincinnati, 11-3, at the hands of the Reds.
Larry Dierker was shelled for seven runs - all earned - in just 4 1/3 innings, yielding six hits and an alarming five walks. Dick Selma and Grant Jackson came out of the pen and poured gasoline on the fire, each conceding a pair of runs. |

Decent start
The Mets end April on a sour note, dropping two straight to the Pirates and enter May with an 8-7 mark.
The San Francisco Giants fashioned an explosive start and top the NL with their gaudy 15-4 record. Jim Ray Hart of the Giants was named the NL Hitter of the Month. Significant why? Side by side comparison with the hot start for Roberto Clemente, who easily could have been the choice. |

Our first video
Decided to do a video catching everyone up with where I'm at with the Mets Dynasty and spin - more like spiral - through a portion of June. Apologies in advance for the notification rings during the video. Will make sure that doesn't occur again if we do another one of these. Enjoy!

Making moves
The Mets trade LHP Bob Veale to the White Sox for 2B Ken Boswell.
New York also traded RHP Bob Miller to Cleveland in exchange for 2B Richard Littleton and RHP Don O'Reilly. Neither move did anything positive in regards to fan support but both moves dumped payroll and old baggage on a pitching staff that has been awful and needs to make room for upcoming young blood. |

Absolute Embarrassment
Mercifully, the 1966 concluded for the Mets, punctuated by an abysmal 55-107 record. This marks the first season in the dynasty that the Mets finished with a record worse than IRL; the '66 Mets went 66-95.
Final team rankings for 1966... |

Disappointing off season sets poor tone for '67
The draft was tricky for us this season. Really wanted to address a positional need and we chose 3B Darrell Evans with the No. 1 overall pick. However, we played hardball at the negotiations table and it was costly.
He was demanding $65K signing bonus, we offered slot, then went well above it to $60K. Evans turned it down, walked away and left us empty. We got a first-rounder in 1967 draft as compensation. The same conclusion stamped a bitter negotiation with our 4th rounder choice, C Cliff Johnson, resulting on him walking away and us getting no comp pick. In between, we drafted and signed LHP Dave LaRoche and OF Tom Grieve. Mets traded 2B Vern Fuller to the Dodgers for a pair of minor leaguers, including C Jerry Grote. Our catching tandem in Triple A is Johnny Bench and Grote. Not bad. With all that, Meet the 1967 New York Mets... |

Always good to open with a dub
Mets kick off 1967 season by rallying for two in the 8th to edge Pirates, 4-2.
Big two-run single in 8th from Jim Hickman makes Grant Jackson a winner in relief despite strong start by Larry Dierker. |

Someone is starting to get pi$$$$ed
With a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Phillies - one which sank the Mets to 3-9 - Steve Carlton continues to search for his first major league win.
Lefty hurled a complete game, conceding a pair of runs in the third and scattering eight hits in absorbing the hard-luck setback. He lowered his ERA to 2.45 but was just the latest pitcher snake bitten by an offense that has been virtually invisible. We just shook it up this week, got an instant win but then betrayed Carlton. |

April showers
It poured with patheticism on top of the Mets in April. A 6-13 mark the byproduct of a feeble offense
A look at a forgettable April... And, the standings on May 1 Our offensive numbers at the plate... Pitching lines... And, damning team rankings... Got work to do. |

Stuck in the mud

That's a wrap on 1967
The Detroit Tigers defeated the Cincinnati Reds in six games to claim the 1967 World Series.
As for the Mets...not so good. We finish 69-93, better than the 61-101 mark IRL. Our off-season hunt will most likely revolve around improving our offense and lengthing our lineup. In the meantime, here are the final numbers... Offense... Pitching... Team rankings... |

Patience Pays Off in Blockbuster
As I prime for the upcoming draft and shift pieces into position, I realized I had some flexibility to move a 2nd baseman. When it came down to Dick Green or Tommy Helms, I opted to shop Helms, who also carries a $153K price tag. The thought was to drop some payroll and get some corner infield help.
But, when the Cubs are shopping their own 2B and it happens to be Joe Morgan at a $166K...well that was too good to ignore. So, four years after missing out on him following the '63 season, the Mets are happy to announce the acquistion of Joe Morgan in exchange for Tommy Helms. #LFGM |

Gotta Give to Get
Mets part ways with OFs Paul Blair, Bernie Smith and Vito Porta, shipping the trio to the Chicago White Sox in return for reigning AL batting champ Tony Gonzalez.
Gonzalez will fill the hole in LF and give us a starting OF of Gonzalez, Reggie Smith and Roberto Clemente. Giving up some D because we need to vastly improve our offense. |

Bench-mark moment
The Mets have also promoted 19-year-old catching phenom Johnny Bench - the top prospect in baseball - to Flushing.
