If they had, they would have seen this reaction on my face, at least.

I believe they used to televise the figure skating compulsories at the Olympics, and elsewhere, back in the day. Absolutely nothing can top that on the boredom scale. Not even Katerina Witt could make that interesting. Ugh.

I shouldn't get drawn in by this nonsense, but sadly I have been. So, you're a "shut up and dribble" guy then? These people aren't automatons, and they have every right to use their platforms to bring attention to social injustices that, for no valid reason, are still with us. If you don't like it, just ignore it for the brief amount of time it's on screen, or change the channel. Is it any wonder that our world's going to hell in a handbasket, when being aware of, and having discussions about, social injustice, are met with such derision by so many? The Jesse Owens, Tommie Smith/John Carlos, even Kaepernick's kneeling every Sunday, and Carlos Delgado's refusing to stand for "God Bless America" moments, would be dismissed as "woke" today, rather than the principled stands that they are. Now, we're even banning books. What's next? Those that forget their history are doomed to repeat it, and all that. /end of non-sports rant

These people are clowns. They say this now for show, but in two years when the kerfuffle is largely forgotten by the public, watch Russians walk into the stadium in Paris with yet another phony flag representing "The Olympic Committee of Northeastern Europe and Asia." That's if Putin doesn't threaten and bribe them into total submission. Can't afford to lose those perks, you know.

What makes you think this war won't still be going on in two years?

By far this is the 'safest' time to do it. The Winter Games just ended, so Russia times the invasion accordingly, whilst the IOC has the maximum window to get this all ironed out before the kickoff of the next games.
The IOC may be a lot of things, but dumb isn't one of them. They see which way the wind is blowing, (with demonstrations in support of Ukraine gathering strength around the globe), so naturally they don't wish to be seen as archaic and out of touch. The whole world is galvanizing against aggression, but instead of leading, here comes the IOC dragging their feet and pouting at the rear of the parade. 'Ah - do we have too?' ![]() ******* In a related note, Dynamo Riga has become the second team to withdraw from the KHL so there is at least some sports blow-back taking place. Finnish hockey team leaves KHL playoffs over Ukraine invasion Latvia’s Dinamo Riga withdraws from KHL amidst Ukraine invasion |

On second thought, why should athletes pay for the villainy of their governments? So this is not a bad solution, but two things: 1) Under no circumstances should the word "Russia," in any language, appear at the OIympics, and 2) It should be a quarter-century of good behavior before Russia is ever again considered as a host for the Olympics.
