The Indians won the World Series in six games over the Dodgers, and Brooklyn fans are nearly apoplectic since they have not lost three consecutive fall classics.

As baseball begins to unwind following its first year with a League Championship Series in each league, fans nationwide have fully embraced the expanded playoff system - although teams remain skeptical.

On Sunday the league will release the names of all eligible players for the upcoming amateur draft. For the first time ever teams will draft players following an inverse order of their regular season records. The draft itself will consist of 16 rounds and will be held on Wednesday, December 1st.

The Major League Awards season will start up in a little more than one week, on Sunday, October 24th with the announcement of the 1954 Gold Glove Award winners. The leagues MVP winners will be announced on Saturday, November 30th.

Fans are no doubt interested in seeing if their favorite players will bring home hardware for the recently completed season, but their interest seems to turning toward the new financial system now in place.

Arbitration hearings for eligible players will be occurring on Saturday, November 6th, with the new free agency period set to begin on Monday, November 8th. No one really knows what to expect during this first year of the new system, but there some very big names that could become free agents - namely Ted Williams and Stan Musial.

Rumors have been heard regarding both players staying put with their long time teams under new contract terms, but other say they will test the market and head to the highest bidder for the final few years of their careers.

Bob Feller has retired from the Indians and the ball club has retired his Jersey #19.

Eddie Stanky was fired as manager of the Cardinals.

Teams continue to sort through their personnel and hirings could occur along those lines quickly. Rumors are circulating that additional firings could also be on the horizon.

Duke Snider has cashed in with the first large scale modern day contract in MLB history. He signed a 7-year deal to stay as one of the cornerstone pieces of the Brooklyn outfield - Carl Furillo also signed a multi-year deal recently.

Dodger's owner Walter O'Malley is being told by Brooklyn and New York City officials that a deal to build a new stadium is being considered.

Free Agency Begins!

The first even year involving true free agency has started in Major League Baseball. Listed below you will find the transactions that finalized the start of the new league year, with players being signed to automatic contracts and others becoming free agents.

It is a long list, but kind of fun to look through it to see the various values placed on each players one year contract.

A reminder that arbitration is not available until after 8 years of service has been accumulated - there were no arbitration hearings this year.

Free agency is available after 11 years of service.

A few huge names are free to sign anywhere - the top salary from the 1954 season belonged to Stan Musial at $120,000.

The leagues overall finances did not change from 1954. I do have the system set up to increase finances year to year between 0% and 5% and clearly this first year it stayed the same. I may in fact tweak that inflation range from between 3% and 8% moving forward to simulate the real life boom of post-war baseball.
