Cardinals fire assistant GM John Mozieliak
Looking for a fall guy, the St. Louis Cardinals have fired Assistant General Manager John Mozeliak.
Assessing the team's front office personnel and coaches, Mozeliak was the only one with a poor rating and took the axe perhaps because of the team's recent struggles. "I'd fire myself," said Cardinals manager and GM Mike Renkes. "But I would not be able to finish out the season. "And that's what I am going to do. Finish this season and then decide if I want to move forward into 2019." The Cardinals, who have not made the playoffs since 2015 after an impressive runs through much of the 2000s, went into the finale of a three-game series in Philadelphia on a seven-game losing streak and at 12-20 for the season, 11 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central Division. |

Cardinals sign Yadier Molina to extension
The Cardinals have signed veteran catcher Yadier Molina to a one-year extension.
The deal, worth $1,421,000, keeps Molina with the team through the 2019 season, probably as a backup to Carson Kelly, whose future is very much in doubt due to his struggles in the majors this season, or another catcher the team may look to trade for. |
