Questdog's Names for OOTP16

Found another nation: Trinidad and Tobago. I have a name that is of Trinidadian origin, don't know where to add it.

They're generally English names. You could add it to the English nameset that the US uses or you can designate an entire set for names from the Caribbean, though it'd only really be for anglo names anyway.

Or just manually edit them when I want to bring players from a foreign country into the game, by generating a guy and then making him from that country and renaming him before he plays a game.

My daughter is working on a story set in 19th century England. She can't find any internet census sources for the U.K. for that time period. Would any of the modders who write name files have any ideas for sources?

First of all I'd like to thank you for the great stuff you add to the game ... this is amazing work !

I never edited anything in the name-files, but I noticed numerous "strange" German first names in the game while several popular names are missing.

How can I add/delete/change these names ?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I thought I'll better ask before screwing things up

1st off, I am not responsible for the German 1st names in the game, only the last names. In my 1870 set, I did make a new list of German first names, but the modern set is what's been in the game forever.

To add/delete names in any set is very simple. It is the same procedure for OOTP 16 or 17.

On a PC, go to ....Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 17\database.

There, you will find 2 files, names.txt and first_names.txt. names.txt is the last names.

Open the text file in any text editor and make your edits.

Above are sample entries in the file. Each field is separated by a comma. The first field is obviously the name. The 2nd field is the frequency number. This number determines how often the name is chosen, with higher numbers being chosen more often. The number is only significant in its relative relationship to other names. The third number is the set that the name belongs to. O is the USA (modern) set, used for American Caucasian names. 7 is the set for German names.

You can freely add or delete names to the list without upsetting anything.

After you have made your edits, save the file. Any new game you begin will now use the new list. If you want the names in a game already started, you must re-import the names from the data base functions tab in game setup. Note that this function is bugged in OOTP16 and should not be used, but has been fixed in OOTP17.

This mod is already in OOTP17.

You can use the alternative sets, the 1970 or 1870 sets, if you want, but the modern set is now the default names in OOTP17.

The worlld.xml file from this mod is not the default one in OOT17 and you can use that if you want. The difference being that the one in this mod has all the countries that never sent ball players to MLB in real life removed.

Stupid question: Does a new OOTP-patch overwrite the names files ?

For the non-steam version, yes, every patch will overwrite everything in the database folder. It will not affect names in an already created league, however.

I don't THINK the steam version will, unless those specific files have been updated by the developers, but my own steam installation is too new for me to be certain. Though checking the integrity of the files will probably get them overwritten.

I need a little more information to understand the issue. I have never seen nor heard of such a thing. Did you perhaps rename the file incorrectly?

If anything needs to be done incorrectly, I'm the guy! I'm going to try again because I am having issues with importing players as well. I may need a complete reload. Or maybe I just need to get loaded.

Did you ever figure out why? I am having the same issue but only with my feeder leagues where the only nation I can select is "American"

Edit = nevermind solved the issue by reloading the original world file and then updating it with Questdogs.

Just a heads up to people: The Steam version WILL overwrite everything in the database folder whenever a new patch comes out, just like the non-steam version.

The next step is to install a new "world_default.xml" file. My files are edited versions of the original OOTP file. They include every nation that has ever sent a real live major league ball player to the USA and do NOT include any that never have. They must be used to get the name files to work correctly. If you don't use them you will never have black players in your league. If you are computer savvy and do not want to use these files, it is possible to use the default OOTP 16 file if you edit the <ETHNICITIES> entry for the USA to match what is in my "QD_world_default.xml" file. I am not responsible for the silly names you will get from the nations I did not edit, however!

I want to use your name set, but I am hesitant because of this step. Does this mean that it will over write all the changes I've made to my world?

I have started a new league, years into the future and some of my countries (like Rwanda and most of Europe) are much more baseball friendly than they were in the 20th century and now send players to the majors with much greater frequency.

I would hate to lose all the changes I've made to the world.

Are you playing OOTP16? If you are, then you should not use these files, except for a new league. The game has a bug that makes re-importing names problematic.

If you are using OOTP17, then you are already using this mod if the league was created in OOTP17. If it is an imported league from OOTP16, you can safely re-import names (and must, to use this mod). However, importing my world.xml will change all the countries that it includes (using the merge option) and leave the countries that it does not include alone. Make a backup before doing it and then you can check the results and see if they are satisfactory or not.

Thanks for the info, yes I am playing OOTP16. I do see your instructions on adding/changing the frequency of names. I will look into doing that as an alternative.
