New League to field teams for the first time in 1882

Pittsburgh PA - Jan 1, 1882 - This off season has proven that all is not well in the National League. For too many reason to discuss at the present time, four teams have decided that they no longer wish to be a part of the National League. The teams in Cincinatti, Philadelphia, Louisville and St. Louis have decided to pull up stakes and make thier own league. To make it more competitive, two new teams, one in Pittsburgh, the Alleghenys, and a team in Baltimore, the Orioles, will round out the new league. Cincinnati will now be called the Red Stockings and Louisville will be now known as the Eclipse.

The remaining owers in the National League have also leaked word that a team will be entering the fray, the Providence Grays.

The St. Louis Red Stockings ownership could not be reached for comment on the Cincinnati name change but sources close to the owners said that it was not a big deal to them since its a totally new league.

These are the new players I changed for the AA's first year draft. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and did not change the financial options and most of these guys were released. The fates of these players is up to the free agent gods.

In the NL, the slimmed down league started out quick and The White Stockings have taken off to get out front. Detriot, in its second year is struggling and the newcomers in Providence are doing ok so far. But can they last.

In the NA, League 1 is led by Middleton but Cleveland and Rockford are not too far behind. League 2 is a very close race right now. The Marylands are up but New Haven, Brooklyn, Keokuk and the Blue Legs are all in it at the end of April.

The new upstart league with not so new teams has shown some good games and attendances so far. St. Louis Brown Stockings are out quick but Louisville and Cincinnati are close. The new teams in Pittsburgh and Baltimore are struggling so far.

The NL is pretty much the same, the White Stockings seem to have it locked up already as they move another half game further ahead of the Red Caps.

The NA, League 1 is starting to solidify a little. The Mansfields are 5 games ahead of the Canaries and the Haymakers. While in League 2, Eckfordsa lead by 2 games over the Marylands.

The AA is being led by the Eclipse, 4 ahead of the Brown Stockings and 5 ahead of Cincinnati. Pittsburgh is in last and the league is chugging along.

Lots of trading again. The addition of the AA seems to be doing one thing to the universe, it seems to have awakened the trading juices cause there seems to be more this season then any of the previous years.

Not long left in the 1882 season. In the NL, the White Stockings are still in the lead but now Troy is trying to make a move, they are 6 back with less than 40 games left. August will be a very import month for Troy.

In the NA, League 1 is still up for grabs. The only team out is the Olympics, who are in last, 20.5 games out. Everyone else is trailing the Manfields but no one is out of it completely yet. They have 41 games or so, so this is gonna be a wild month. In League 2, the Eckfords are 3 games ahead of the Marylands but only the Elm Citys are still under ten games back. The NA is going to be a fun run for both leagues.

In the AA, the Brown Stockings and Cincinnati are within 6 games of the Eclipse. The AA could be a lot of fun to watch, all three teams could win.

August coming up soon.

The American Assoication played its inaugural season and the Louisville Eclipse took the first title. The Red Stockings of Cincinnati did try to make a run at the end but they came up a few games short. Was an interesting season and next season will be more interesting because two new teams, the Columbus Buckeyes and the New York Metropolitans will be joining the fray. May be that one of these two teams will break the expansion team blues next year.

The National Association, the elder statesman of leagues (longest running) had a year that some would say could be forgotten. The offense was low and as a result, the owners held an emergency meeting right after the season ended and announce a lowering of the pitchers mound for next season. This has the hitter salivating but may cause an exodus for the pitching.

As for this year, In League 1, the Mansfields held of a late charge by the Atlantics and Canarires to win the league title. In League 2, the Eckfords were out early and never really had to worry. The NA Champ Series was a good one for Mansfields fans. After a loss in Game 1, the Mansfield swept the next four to win it for thier second NA Title in three year, and fifth title for League 1 in a row.

Maybe the offense will heat it up a bit and get a League 2 winner next year.

Next up - NA Awards
