Each teams boasts some formidable sluggers but we'll see if the New York bats can overcome the Cincinnati starting trio of John Martin, Bill Gullickson, and Doug Rau. 1982 - ALCS Game 2
Tigers Blast Mariners Again
In keeping with recent tradition, the Seattle Mariners staff continues to give up homers to unexpected hitters. Detroit got on the board first when Rudy Law, who managed only 1 homer all year in 374 at-bats, hit a 2-run to left-field off Seattle starter Floyd Bannister to put Detroit up 2-0 after the top of the 2nd inning. After giving up a 3rd run in the 3rd inning, Bannister settled down until the top of the 6th inning. Bannister got in trouble with men on 1st and 2nd when Ben Ogilvie came up and crushed a 1-1 pitch into the right field bleachers giving the Tigers a 6-run lead and sending Bannister to the showers. Seattle finally got to Detroit starter Jack Morris in the bottom of the 6th. After Dave Stapleton led off the inning with a single, Ruppert Jones hit a 2-run homer and was followed by a solo homer from Richie Zisk. A pair of walks got the tying run to the plate with none out but Morris worked out of the jam and kept the score at 6-3. Just when Seattle got some offense going, Detroit bounced back with 3 runs to push the lead back to 6 at 9-3. Lefty Buddy Schultz (keeping lefties down with a .211 average) promptly gave up a run-scoring single to Harold Baines and a 2-run double to Lout Whitaker before getting out of the 7th inning. Detroit pitcher Gary Lavelle needed only 2 pitches to record the final 2 outs and close the book on a 9-3 Detroit win giving the Tigers a commanding 2-0 lead in the ALCS as we head to Detroit for Game 3. Jack Morris (W, 1-0) earned the win and pitched well after an up-and-down year (7-11, 5.14). Seattle again used 5 pitchers but couldn't find an answer against Detroit and have given up 21 runs on 27 hits in the first 2 games of the Series. |

Mariners Come Back Averts Sweep
The series moved to Detroit with the Tigers sitting pretty with a 2-0 lead over Seattle for this 5-game series. The Tigers struck first building up a 3-0 lead scoring 1 run apiece in innings 2-4 off of Seattle starter Burt Hooton. The Detroit starter Dave Rozema was cruising through four inning pitching a perfect game -12 up, 12 down. The Mariners finally got to him in the 5th when Richie Zisk tallied the first hit for Seattle and Andre Thornton followed up with a 2-run homer to reduce Detroit’s lead to 3-2. Seattle added 3 runs in the 6th to take a 5-3 lead with a 2-run triple by Dave Stapleton who later scored on a Ruppert Jones single. A Paul Molitor single in the 7th scored Andre Thornton giving Seattle a 6-3 lead and sending Rozema to the showers. Detroit responded in the 7th with 2 runs to reduce the Seattle lead to 6-5. A run-scoring double by Jason Thompson plated Harold Baines. 1982 - ALCS Game 4
Seattle Blasts Way to Series Tie
Seattle entered Game 4 needing to win to stay alive and head back to Seattle. They got off to a good start against Detroit starter Bob Sykes. A lead-off single by Paul Molitor and a walk by Richie Zisk to get runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Rookie Greg Walker then took a 3-1 fastball and deposited it into the right field bleachers for a 3-run homer and an early lead. A big 5-run 5th inning by Seattle was enough to chase Tigers starter Sykes and give Seattle a 8-0 lead. The big blow was a grand slam by Ruppert Jones, his second homer of the series. Detroit finally got on the board against Seattle starter Don Gullet when Lou Whitaker led the 7th inning off with a solo home run to reduce Seattle’s lead to 8-1. After giving up a run in the bottom of the 9th, Don Gullet struck out Rudy Law for the final out capping a complete game 8-2 win where he gave up 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 Tigers. Gullet (W, 1-0) earned the win while Bob Sykes (L, 1-1) took the loss for Detroit. Seattle played long ball today scoring 7 of their 8 runs on a pair of homers by Greg Walker (3-run) and Ruppert of Jones (grand slam). After digging themselves a 0-2 whole, Seattle has bounced back taking both games in Detroit to tie the series as we head back to Seattle for Game 5. |

1982 - NLCS Game 4
Reds Blast Way Back Home
Cincinnati avoided elimination and force a winner take all Game 5 by virtue of their 9-1 pasting of the New York Mets in Shea Stadium. The Reds peppered Mets starter Lamar Hoyt (L, 0-2) for 5 runs on 4 homers in 4.1 innings. The Reds added 4 more runs off of 3 New York relievers including their 5th homer of the game. All told, the Reds got 2 homers from Johnny Bench, 2 from Howard Johnson, and 1 by Dan Driessen. Bench blasted New York pitchers for his 2 homers and a double while driving in 5 runs for the game. Cincinnati starter John Martin pitched 7 strong innings to earn the win and send the series back home to Cincinnati. |

1982 - ALCS Game 5
Thornton Blasts Seattle to Comeback
The winner take all Game 5 takes us back to Seattle where Detroit will send Jack Morris against Seattle’s Floyd Bannister. Seattle got on the board first with a 2-out solo homer by Ruppert Jones, his 3rd of the series. Detroit bounced back in the 2nd with 3 runs on 3 miscues. First, Lou Whitaker scored from 3rd on a Bannister balk, then Jason Thompson scored from second when the defense failed to corral a pop-up on short right field, and the 3rd run scored when John Stearns overthrew 3rd base on a steal attempt allowing Rudy Law to score. All-in-all, it was a horrible showing for the Seattle defense in the 3rd and it puts the Mariners in a 3-1 hole. Seattle countered in the bottom of the 2nd with a Andre Thornton solo homer reduced Detroit’s lead to 3-2. Detroit added a run in the 3rd when Lou Whitaker singled in Alan Trammel. Whitaker is hitting .529 for the series with a team leading 7 RBI’s. Seattle exploded in the 4th with 5 runs off of 2 homers. First, Greg Walker hit a grand slam off of Morris, sending him to the showers. Andre Thornton followed that up against reliever Tom Underwood for his 2nd homer of the game to give Seattle a 7-4 lead after only 3 innings. In the bottom of the a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly scored John Stearns increasing Seattles lead to 8-4 after 4 innings. In the 5th, a Tim Wallach double and a Paul Molitor triple plated two more runs to increase the lead to 10-4 Seattle. In the 6th inning, Andre Thornton blasted his 3rd homer of the game to bump the lead to 12-4. For the game Thornton is 3/3 with a walk, 3 HR’s, 4 RBI’s, and 4 runs scored. The crowd was going wild and his Seattle teammates sent Thornton out for a curtain call. A solo homer by Tim Wallach added to the 13-4 Seattle lead giving them at least a run in every inning so far this game. A Buddy Bell solo homer off of Seattle reliever Sheldon Burnside was all the Tigers could manage in the 9th inning and a strikeout of Brett Butler ended the game and gave Seattle a miraculous comeback this series from down 0-2 in the first 2 games to winning the 5-game ALCS. The Series was a total slugfest. Detroit scored 33 runs while hitting .299 with 7 HR’s while Seattle scored 34 runs hitting .282 but the 12 HR’s rocked the Detroit staff. Andre Thornton earned the MVP with his 4 HR’s including 3 in the clinching Game 5. Helping him out was Ruppert Jones 3 HR’s and 8 RBI’s and Greg Walkers 2 HR’s and 8 RBI’s. |

1982 World Series Preview
It doesn't happen often, but the teams with the best records in the American and National Leagues will meet to decide the World Series champions in October. It was a tough road for both teams. Cincinnati, holders of a major league best 105-57 record, fell down 2 games to 1 to the New York Mets but won the last 2 games to take the NLCS. In the AL, Seattle got crushed in the first 2 games at home by a combined scored of 21-6 and were in a dire, 2-0 hole. But, Seattle swept both games in Detroit and responded with a big 13-5 win in Game 5 to win the ALCS and advance to their second straight World Series.
Seattle will have to contend with a solid rotation from Cincinnati who sports 2 19-game winners in Bill Gullickson and Doug Rau and a 20-game winner in John Martin. The Seattle pitching staff who was worst in the AL giving up 141 homers will contend with a Cincinnati offense who led the majors hitting an astounding 200 homers and boast 6 starters with 20 or more homers in their lineup. Seattle pitchers did lead the AL in the fewest runs allowed but they were rocked by Detroit in the ALCS giving up 33 runs in 5 games. The Seattle offense can play longball too having hit 160 homers over the season. They will be at a slight disadvantage having lost Bill Buckner for the season and not being able to use rookie Greg Walker who's accounted for 16 homers while filling in for Buckner at the DH spot. |

1982 - World Series Game 1
Reds Shutout Mariners for Game 1 Victory
Game 1 featured Cincinnati’s Bruce Kison (13-10, 3.70) going against Cincinnati’s lefty John Martin (20-9, 2.40). After trading scoreless first inning, the Reds got on the board first in true fashion with a solo homer by Johnny Bench (3) off of Kison to take a 1-0 lead after 2 innings. Kison is no stranger to the longball having given up 26 during the regular season along with another dinger in his the loss against Detroit in Game 1 of the ALCS. Seattle finally got a hit off of Martin the 4th but it was quickly erased by a double play. In the bottom of the 4th Cincinnati struck again this time for 3 runs. A pair of singles and a sac-fly scored Howard Johnson but then a Bernie Carbo took advantage of a mistake by Kison to deposit a 2-run homer into right field to increase the Red’s lead to 4-0. After cruising through 8 innings, Martin started to see some trouble in the top of the 9th. A Dave Winfield pinch hit single followed by a Greg Walker single got men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs when Walker advanced to 2nd on an unnecessary throw by Bernie Carbo to try to get Winfield at 3rd. Martin reached back for something extra to strike out Paul Molitor for the first out. Manager Billy Martin brought in closer Bob McClure (7-5, 2.20, 20 Saves) to face Dave Stapleton with 1 out. McClure got Stapleton to ground to third for the second out. It was all up to Ruppert Jones but he whiffed on a 1-2 fastball, striking out and giving Game 1 to Cincinnati with a 4-0 shutout. John Martin earned the win (3-0), Bob McClure earned his 3rd save, and Bruce Kison (0-2) took the loss. John Martin earned the player of the game award throwing 8.1 innings of shutout ball giving up only 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1. |

1982 World Series Game 2
Seattle Roughs Ups Reds to Tie Series
Game 2 features Seattle’s Burt Hooton (16-6, 2.75) against Cincinnati’s lefty Doug Rau (19-8, 2.65). Seattle hopes to come away with a split in Cincinnati before heading back to Seattle. The Mariners got off to a good start with a lead-off double by Molitor who later scored on a Ruppert Jones single to take an early 1-0 lead. The Reds tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd when Johnny Bench scored on a Lee Mazzilli sac-fly. Seattle took back the lead 2-1 in the 3rd when John Stearns scored from second on a Dave Stapleton single off of Rau. The Mariners got to Rau again in the 4th when Barry Bonnell singled in Andre Thornton. Rau had men on 1st and 3rd with 1 out but managed to get out of the inning giving up only 1 run. Cincinnati reduced the lead to 3-2 in the 5th thanks to pitcher Doug Rau. Rau doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a force out by Doug Driessen. The Mariners threatened in the 6th loading the bases with none out after a single, a walk, and an error on an attempted sac-bunt. A Barry Bonnell single scored Richie Zisk but Andre Thornton was thrown out at home trying to score. Thornton injured his knee on the play and would leave the game to be replaced by Greg Walker. A walk to John Stearns loaded the bases for Burt Hooton with 1 out. Seattle skipper Darrell Johnson elected to stay with Hooton and it didn’t pay off as Hooton struck out for out #2 leaving it up to Paul Molitor to try to extend the damage. Molitor did his job with a 2-out double to the right field corner scoring Ripken and Bonnell but a great throw by Bernie Carbo cut down John Stearns for the third out. Seattle did manage 3 runs in the 6th to extend their lead to 6-2. Cincinnati added a run on a 1-out Lenny Randle triple but Seattle brought in Enrique Romo to close the door and strand Randle on third keeping the lead at 6-3. Seattle added an insurance run to take a 7-3 lead when Ruppert Jones doubled in Paul Molitor with two outs. Tom Gorman came in to close the game out for Seattle. He got in a bit of trouble with a pair of walks but a 6-4-3 double play ended the game giving Seattle the 7-3 win and tying the series at 1 game apiece. Paul Molitor earned the player of the game award going 4/5 with 3 2B’s, 2 runs, and 2 RBI’s. Burt Hooton (2-0) earned the win going 6.1 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while 4 relievers combined to give up only 1 hit in 2.1 innings. The Reds Doug Rau (0-1) earned the loss getting roughed up for 6 runs on 10 hits in 7 innings though 3 runs were unearned due to 2 errors. We head now to Seattle for Game 3 with the series tied! |

1982 World Series Injury
Reds Lose Parrish For Series
Cincinnati got bad news after the Game 2 loss when they heard they would lose shortstop Larry Parrish for the rest of the series. Parrish separated his shoulder on a collision at second base when trying to turn a double play. Cincinnati will have to make do without his .315 average, 25 HR's, and 66 RBI's. Parrish will be replaced by Lenny Randle (.231, 1 HR, 12 RBI's, 121 AB's). Randle did manage a rbi triple in Game 2 in place of Parrish. The Reds will hope he provide a strong bat for the remainder of the series. |

1982 World Series Game 3
Seattle Handles Reds for 2-1 Lead
Game 3 moves to Seattle with a matchup between Cincinnati’s Bill Gullickson (19-6, 3.16) and Seattle’s Floyd Bannister (14-12, 3.67). Seattle struck first against Gullickson when a Ruppert Jones single scored John Stearns for the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead after 3 innings. Floyd Bannister pitched into the 6th inning before getting replaced by Steve Foucault. Bannister leaves having gone 5.1 innings giving up 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 Reds. Seattle touched Gullickson for 3 more hits in the 6th but only came up with a single run when Richie Zisk plated Dave Stapleton for a 2-0 lead. Seattle added two more runs on 4 hits off of Gullickson with RBI’s by Stapleton and Greg Walker but Cincinnati avoided an extra run when Dave Stapleton was thrown out at home by Mark Brouhard for the final out in the 7th. The Reds did manage 2 runs off of Seattle reliever Enrique Romo in the 9th before closer Tom Gorman retired the final 2 batters to earn his 2nd save of the post-season. Floyd Bannister (2-1) earned the win with his 5.1 innings of shut-out ball while Cincinnati’s Bill Gullickson (1-1) got roughed up in the loss giving up 4 runs on 11 hits and 3 walks in 7.2 innings while striking out 9 batters. 1982 World Series Game 4
Mariners Cool Reds Bats for 3-1 Series Lead
Game 4 in Seattle will feature a pair of lefties. Cincinnati will send John Martin (20-9, 2.40; 3-0, 0.77 in the playoffs) against Seattle’s Don Gullet (10-12, 4.30; 1-0, 3.55 in the playoffs). Cincinnati struck first in the 2nd inning on a 2-out single by Barry Evans scoring Bernie Carbo to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead. Seattle threatened Cincinnati loading the bases against Martin with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Dave Winfield came to the plate but Martin coaxed him into a ground-out for the final out of the inning preserving the 1-0 lead. Seattle threatened again in the bottom of the 5th with singles by Stearns and Molitor put men on 1st and 2nd with none out. One double play and an infield pop-up later and Martin got himself out of another jam. Cincinnati added a run in the 6th when Bernie Carbo doubled in George Foster who had coaxed a walk out of Gullet. Seattle got to Martin again for 2 more hits but all was erased with another double play to keep 2-0 lead for the Reds. Seattle’s tenacity finally paid off in the 7th when Dave Stapleton got to Martin for a 2-run homer to left-field to tie the game a 2 runs apiece. After the homer, Ruppert Jones singled and later scored on a Richie Zisk single to take a 3-2 lead. That was enough to chase Martin from the game. He leaves having thrown 6.2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks while striking out a pair of batters. Britt Burns came in for Martin to get the final out of the 7th and hold the damage to 3 runs. After getting Howard Johnson for the first out in the 8th, Seattle brought in Rich Gossage in to face the middle of the order. Gullet leaves the game having thrown 7.1 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9 batters. Seattle added a pair of insurance runs off of Burns in the bottom of the 8th on 3 singles and an error to take a 5-2 lead going into the 9th inning. Rich Gossage pitched a perfect 9th inning for the save giving Seattle a 3-1 lead in the World Series. Don Gullet earned the win (2-0) and the player of the game for his pitching performance today while John Martin took the loss (3-1). Seattle managed 13 hits to Cincinnati’s 3 for the game and have held back the Reds bats so far this series. Game 5 will be in Seattle where the Mariners hope to clinch the title in front of their home crowd. |

1982 World Series Game 5
Reds Hold on for Win, Series Heads Back to Cincinnati
Seattle hopes to close out the Series at home in Game 5. They send Bruce Kison to the hill to try to close things out. Kison pitched well in the regular season (13-10, 3.70 ERA) but has struggled in 2 post-season starts (0-2, 8.71 ERA in 10.1 IP). Cincinnati pins their hopes on lefty Doug Rau who sparkled in the regular season (19-8, 2.65) but has struggled as well in his 2 post-season starts (0-1, 3.68 in 14.2 IP). Cincinnati wasted no time when leadoff hitter Dan Driessen took Kison’s first pitch and deposited deep in the right-center bleachers for a leadoff homer (his third post-season homer) and a 1-0 lead. A single and a walk got Kison into more trouble but a double play and a ground out by George Foster ended the inning being down only 1 run. Seattle got to Rau for 1 hit and a pair of walks but couldn’t push any run past home plate though they did rough him up for 31 pitches in the first inning. The Reds touched Kison for another run in the 2nd and a 2-0 lead on a 2-out double by Lenny Randle followed by a run-scoring single by Jim Norris. Seattle reduced the lead to 2-1 on a rbi single by Paul Molitor scoring Tim Wallach. Kison’s troubles continued in the 3rd giving up 3 more runs. Johnny Bench’s 2-RBI double was followed by a run-scoring single by Lee Mazzilli. Seattle has dug themselves a 5-1 deficit. Kison leaves the game after 3 innings of work giving up 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks to be replaced by lefty Sheldon Burnside (1-2, 4.05 in 53.1 IP in the regular season). Seattle threatened in the 5th by loading the bases with none out. A sacrifice fly by Ruppert Jones for the first out scored John Stearns from 3rd base. Rau escapes the inning when Richie Zisk grounds into a tailor made 6-4-3 double play leaving the score 5-2, Cincinnati. Seattle relievers continue to hold the Reds scoreless as Burnside (2.2 IP, 3 hits, 0 runs) gives way to Enrique Romo who strikes out Barry Evans for the last out in the 6th. A 1-out triple by Paul Molitor (his 3rd hit of the game chases Doug Rau from the game (6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB’s, 3 K’s) in place of Roy Lee Jackson. Jackson is promptly met by a Dave Stapleton single that scores Molitor and reduces the Red’s lead to 5-3. A pair of strikeouts by Jackson ends Seattle’s threat in the 7th. The Seattle relievers did their job shutting down the Reds offense giving up no runs on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. Seattle enters the bottom of the 9th inning down 5-3 and will face the Reds closer Bob McClure (7-5, 20 Saves, 2.20) who’s had mixed results in the post-season (4.1 IP, 0-1, 3 Saves, 6.23 ERA, in 5 appearances). McClure does his job pitching a perfect 9th inning to preserve the game and earn his 4th save of the post- season. Doug Rau earns the win (1-1) while Bruce Kison takes the loss (0-3). Cincinnati earns the 5-3 win and the Series heads back to Cincinnati with Seattle leading 3 games to 2. |
