A look at some of the individual awards. It's all in the November 1877 issue of The Baseball Monthly.
First up, an interview with John Scovell (Atlanta) and Eddie Brown (New York) ![]()

From 1876 onwards, the Central Pacific Rail Road Company handed out flyers promoting the game of base ball... and more importantly the Central League.
I received one of these the other day by mail. No need to tell you that this piece of paper is worth thousands of dollars nowadays.

Thanks to the Richmond Star we get a look into the Union League preseason predictions.
James C. Oggle one of the most famous base ball writers of the time gives us his insight.

The Times of Detroit is our main source for the 1878 season on the CPBL side of things.

Let's turn our attention to one of the best pitchers of the early days: Ryan Nelson. He tells us about the 1878 season in his autobiography "Life and Times of a Seahawk".

When I started this dynasty about 6 months ago, I didn't think it would take this long to reach 1878 (and it's not even finished yet!). Lack of time in recent months is the main reason why the whole thing is moving forward at an arthritic snail's pace. I wish to express my thanks to the handful of you who have sticked around so far in spite of it. Now, I'm thinking of changing the way I present this baseball history for a few reasons. First, I intended (and still intend) to cover 140+ years of baseball from 1871 to present. The way things are going, on a year-by-year basis, I'm not sure I'll be able to complete the task in this lifetime... or the next. Second, for fear of spoiling the fun I have, I haven't touch this particular game for 4 months. I'm still stuck on Christmas Eve 1902. I'd like to cover all of the 19th century history before going back to it. Yet, I'm itching to play it. At this rate... you can guess the rest, the sentence probably ends with "OOTP 39" or the like. ![]() Third, in doing the year-by-year recap, I'm afraid I might run out of (hopefully good) ideas or get fed up with it at some point. Fourth, well there should be a fourth one, but I can't remember it right now. ![]() Therefore, I've been toying with the idea of writing themed updates. This way, I'll cover most of the 19th century a lot faster. And I'll still leave the door open for specific demands should there be any. I'm going to post a multi-choice poll to check the waters. My next course of action will depend on what your answers are. Take your time. We still have at least 3 updates for 1878 ahead of us. Thank you for reading. Thank you for helping me as well. * Edit: I must be blind and/or stupid. How do I add a poll? I checked here, the OP as well. I can't find a way. The Poll
*** OOC ***
I've given up on the poll idea... First time I don't understand how this works. Anyway, I've listed ten options (well, twelve actually). For any given topic, there will be as many updates as necessary. For those of you kind enough to participate, you may choose as many answers as you wish. Thanks again for your help. Here are the options: A. The greatest pitchers of the 19th century B. The greatest batters of the 19th century C. The Leagues' awards and accomplishments D. The Barrow's player of year awards E. The War of the Baseball Leagues F. The dynasties: The dominant teams of the 19th century G. The best managers of the 19th century H. The perennial losers: How can this team be so bad? I. The American Baseball Association J. The characters of baseball (a gallery of individuals) K. How about? (your suggestion) L. Don't change a thing. A year-by-year story is the way to go Let's vote! |
