In the opening bout Mel Turnbow (0-1-0-0) took on George Axford (0-5-0-1). Turnbow looks to rebound from a third round knockout suffered in his pro debut back in January. Thru the first two rounds Turnbow uses the ring nicely and is just peppering Axford with rights and lefts. Turnbow keeps at it in the third and a wicked right cross opens a nasty cut on the bridge of the nose of Axford.Turnbow finishes the fight brilliantly when a clasic left right combo rattles Axford badly who is being pounding Axford along the ropes when the bell sounds to end the bout. Turnbow looked impressive showed no tentativeness and looked superb. Scores 40-36 for Turnbow.


In the first preliminary bout we have Mike "The Giant" White (6-1-2-5) vs John "Speedy" Jordan (0-5-1-0). White is looking to get his career back on track after being stopped by Terry Anderson (6-4-1-4) a TC in his last bout.Both men appeared to be in great shape for the six rounder. White started quickly when an explosive four punch combo ended with a right hook dropping Jordan for a six count. Jordan was wobbled but boxed cleverly to survive the opening frame. In a fierce second round both men stood and traded at the end of the round White was wearing a cut above the right eye. White looked impressive in the third and fourth. Jordan seemed spent as the final bell rang to end the fourth round. White still had to contend with the cut as it reopened in the third, but showed no bleeding at all in the fourth. White just dominates the fifth with crisp combos and a rapier like jab. Jordan just doesn't seem to have enough energy to keep White off of him. White wins a lackluster sixth round as White is content to win a decision and Jordan just has no energy. Give Darkie Smith credit for keeping the cut of White closed over the final three rounds. The scores 60-53 all fro Mike"The Giant"White


In the second preliminary bout of the evening we saw Canadian Rufus Hadley (10-4-0-6) a pre-prime slugger taking on a prime boxer in George Chaplin(14-3-4-7). Rumors before the fight are stating Chaplin is not happy with his purse for this bout and Hadley hopes this plays to his advantage. Neither man has seen action this year and both look to get their careers on track. Thru the first two rounds Chaplin controls the action from the outside with a great jab and wicked uppercuts. Hadley takes the third as he is finally able to get inside and land his first clean shots of the fight. Chaplin seems to take the shots well. Hadley pulls even in the fourth when a violent right cross buckles Chaplin's knees. Chaplin gets on his bicycle and is able to survive without any further damage being done. Chaplin is back in control in the fifth as his upper body movement is incredible and is causing Hadley to miss and be peppered by crisp combos. Chaplin received a warning for low blows. Hadley looks tired as the round concludes. Chaplin takes the sixth as Hadley looks spent. Chaplin continues to fire a quick jab and brutal hooks to the head and body. As the seventh round opens a Chaplin hook starys south of the border and Referee Frank Cappucino rules the blow to be blatant and disqualifies Chaplin. A riot almost insues as Chaplins handlers Yank Durham and Chuck Bodak eneter the ring to cry fix. Definately an odd DQ from my point of view as Chaplin received only one warning prior to the DQ.

With the crowd now buzzing from the odd DQ and the ring finally cleared they were able to move onto the next bout of the eveneing an eight rounder between George Mostardini (17-4-2-9) a prime slugger and Gene Innocent (15-3-0-8) a pre-prime slugger. Mostardini looks to be in great shape while Innocent who took this bout on short notice when Kevin Isaac (12-3-2-2) pulled out with an unexplained injury looks to be a little soft. This is a chance for Innocent to upset the 4-1 favorite and get his name out there. After one it looks like Innocent should be the favorite as he just unloads on Mostardini with lefts and rights and late in the round a wicked uppercut almost drops Mostardini. Mostardini storms back in the second and is able to continually get Innocent against the ropes and land thudding body shots. Innocent wins the third as he is just busier then Mostardini. Late in the third Innocent uncorks a wicked right hook. Mostardini has a huge fourth round as a wicked hook drops Innocent for an eight count. Mostardini jumps on Innocent and a few seconds later a ripping hook to the body drops Innocent again this time for a six count. The bell sounds ending the round as Innocent gets to his feet.In the fifth both men stand and trade with both men landing some brutal shots and as both men stand and trade Lou Moret inexplicably jumps in and stops the fight in favor of Mostardini. Again the handlers of Innocent come flying into the ring as well as beer and other trash. That was a very quick stoppage Innocent wasn't even hurt. Don't know what's happening here tonight but Houston PD better get the riot gear ready if these odd endings continue to happen.


After a lengthy delay we move onto the support bout of the evening a pre-prime slugging hometown fighter #7 ranked Renaldo Snipes (22-0-0-3) takes on another Texas Native the prime slugging #10 ranked Randall"Tex"Cobb (28-1-0-21). Odds are 2-1 in favor of Cobb whose only defeat was a six round DQ early on in his career. If there is another bizaar stoppage in this one the Astrodome may burn. Both men appear to be in top shape for this 10 rounder. Snipes wins the first with a quick jab and great lateral movement. Cobbs lands some body shots but Snipes definately wins it. Cobb with a huge second round as he unloads aa ton of power shots. Snipes holds up nicely but wouldn't be surprised if this was scored 10-8 on some score cards. Cobb wins the third as believe it or not he makes Snipes miss and counters with heavy handed hooks. Snipes bounces back in the fourth and has a hufe round of his own. A Snipes hook opens a cut above Cobb's left eye. After the cut Cobb seems distracted and Snipes just tees off landing everything he throws. Both fighters draw warnings Snipes for a low blow and Cobb for rabbit punching and using his shoulder on the inside. Cobb with a convinving fifth round as he is the one now teeing off and landing some incredible power shots that again Snipes is absorbing very well. Kudos to Cobb's cutman Carlos Vargas as Cobb's cut remains closed thru the fifth. Snipes looks beat as the sixth round opens up. Pretty close sixth as both men appear to take the round off. Again no blood from the cut above Cobb's left eye. Another slow round in the seventh as both men are slowing down. Late in the seventh a Snipes jab starts the blood flow going from Cobbs cut. Another very slow round in the eighth as both men are happy to clinch. Cobb draws another warning for a low blow. What a ninth round Snipes seems to be winning it easily when a Snipes hook reopens the gash Cobb is led to the ringside physician who allows the fight to continue. That seemed to spur Cobb on because when the fight resumed he just unloaded on Snipes and may have actually pulled the round out. Snipes feeling he is behind comes out to try and end it and it is his agressiveness that works against him as Cobb slips and counters most of Snipes bombs and easily wins the tenth. I feel Cobb wins the bout. Scores 97-94 Cobb, 96-96 and 96-95 Cobb. Cobb with the majority decision victory. " I told you guys I'm for real. Don't bet against me, I need a drink"


In the main event a twelve round title eliminator we have see #3 Ranked Lynn Ball (23-0-1-18) taking on Oklahoma native #5 ranked James"Quick"Tillis (22-0-3-14). Both men appear to be in great shape. Tillis is a 3-1 favorite entering the bout. Ball comes out quickly and appears quicker then most may think and lands some heavy blows to the body and head of Tillis. Tillis with a big second round as he is the aggresor and seems to land at will. Ball absorbs the blows and continues to move forward but can't land like he did in the first. Tillis with another huge round as a right hook hurts Ball badly. Ball goes into defensive mode but Tillis is still able to land some damaging blows, it's amazing Ball did not go down. Tillis continues to land bombs on the jaw of Ball who cannot seem to get it going like he did in the first. Ball won't last l;ong if he continues to get hit with these bombs. Ball has a better fifth round but again Tillis is to quick and just counters everything Ball does. Ball's left eye is now showing swelling as the round concludes. As the sixth begins Ball's hands semm to be low and Tillis continues to punish Ball and bust him up as a searing hook tears open Ball's lip. Joe Souza is gonna have his hands full as the left eye continues to swell badly. and the cut is horrible. As the seventh opens Ball's hands are still low and he looks fatigued and Tillis just continues to tee off on Ball. It maybe time for the corner to save Ball from himself. Till continues his domination of Ball in the eighth a right hook reopens the cut and the ringside physician examines it and amazingly allows the fight to continue, that would have been the perfect time to stop this one sided demolition. As the ninth round opens Ball does some nice work on the inside and Tillis is now bleeding from a cut over the left eye. Late in the round a Tillis hook drops Ball like a sack of potatoes. Ball tries gallantly to rise but is counted out at 3:00 of the ninth round. Impressive victory for Tillis who will be in one of the initial title fights. "This Ball is one tough SOB I'm glad this fight is over and I can get into training and be the Heavyweight Champion of the world"

Fight Of The Month

# 36 Miguel Angel Cuello (17-2-0-5) vs # 34 David Sears (14-1-0-8)

Both men are in great shape for this 8 rounder. Both men are seeing action for the first time in 1986. And both men are facing their toughest challenge to date. Sears wins the opening round convincingly as he is using his jab to set up wicked rights and hurts Cuello late in the first with a solid right hook. Cuello wins a close second round as he is able to get inside and land some sharp uppercuts. Sears draws a warning from referee Curtis Thrasher. For leaning on the neck of Cuello. Thrasher then deducts a point from Cuello for a low blow that didn't seem to land. What a third round both men just stand and slug and botrh men land some incredible punches. Slightest of edges to Sears. Sears has a huge fourth round as he is able to hurt Cuello with a straight right hand. Sears is landing jab hook combos as the round comes to a close. Cuello has some swelling under the left eye as the round concludes. Cuello battles back in the fifth as Sears is looking fatigued. Cuello hurts Sears late in the round with a right hook. Sears gets on his horse and remains upright for the remainder of the round. Round six may be the round of the year. Both men look spent as they get off their stools. And both men are just letting it all hang out. They take turns rocking eachother and stumbeling across the ring it is amazing neither man goes down as there are some heavy punches being landed. Edge to Cuello as he hurt Sears on a number of occasions here in the sixth. Sears left eye is also showing swelling as the round concludes. Cuello has a big seventh round as Sears looks worse for wear and is hurt again by a Cuello hook. Sears battles back and both mens eyes are a mess. To the eighth and final round. Both men touch gloves and we begin. Cuello lands a huge uppercut and Sears is rocked. A 1:30 in a Sears hook drops Cuello for a 6 count. Cuello struggles to rise to his feet and makes it to the end. Scores should be interesting. 76-75 Sears, 76-76 and 76-75 for the winner by majority decision David Sears. Knockdown late earned Sears the nod. Great fight.

Fighter Of The Month

Miguel "Happy" Lora

(14-0-1-2)

Lora gets the nod after a thrilling 12 round split decision victory over Lupe Pintor to defend his SABC Bantamweight Championship. This is Lora's second victory this year and took a big step up in competition and showed he will be a force in the Bantamweight division. "This fight shows i'm ready to get in there with the best the division has to offer. I hope to be in the top ten by the end of the year and maybe challenge for a title next year"

Lopez wins WBA Title In Shootout

Ricardo Lopez (18-0-0-11) won the vacant WBA Strawweight Championship with a 15 round Unanimous Decision over Fernando Martinez (13-1-0-8). There was a whopping 2783 punches thrown 1497 by Martinez who only landed 199 of them, while Lopez connected with 411. This bout started quickly with both men just throwing caution to the wind in the first and tattooed eachother. Lopez was definately the stronger of the two but Martinez held his ground. The fifth round was simply amazing both men took turns landing some incredible power punches and the crowd exploded into cheers as the bell sounded ending the round. Lopez seemed to control every round even though Martinez was always in each of the rounds. Late in the ninth a Lopez hook dropped Martinez for a 1 count. After the knockdown Martinez was going for broke in each of the next three rounds and just when I thought it couldn't get better then the fifth round the bell for round eleven rang and what a round it was Martinez quickly landed a right hook that buckled Lopez's legs and forced him to cover up. Just when you think Martinez has the round won an explossive uppercut from Lopez turned the tide and Martinez was forced to get on his bicycle and move. The eleventh round was Martinez's last hoorah as Lopez seemed the fresher of the two and dominated the last four rounds. After the thirteenth Martinez showed some swelling over the left eye. To the pre-prime Martinez's credit he never quit and finished the fight the same way he started trying to land the big bomb. Scores were 147-137 twice and 145-142. Speaking to Lopez afterward he had these remarks. "This Martinez kid is one tough kid, I hit him with everything and he kept coming. I just want to relax for a few before I decide my next move" . Looking at the strawweight division I see Lopez' reighn being long as there is no real threats at this time.

In the support bout we had #3 Carlos Alberto Rodriguez (21-2-0-8) taking on the #4 Hideyuki Ohashi (24-2-4-7) in a twelve round title eliminator with the winner to face IBF Champion Katsumi Komiyama(19-1-1-1) in June. Ohashi was coming off a TKO loss on cuts to Komiyama for the vacant IBF Championship back in February, while Rodriguez was coming off a ten round unanimous decision loss to Fernando Martinez. Ohashi a 3-1 favorite coming in looked dry as the bout started and Rodriguez took advantage going right after Ohashi and 1:00 in a Rodriguez hook opened a gash right over the left eyelid of Ohashi. The blood was everywhere and referee Conrad Thrasher took Ohashi to the ringside physician who allowed the bout to continue. Ohashi quickly realizing his chance may be slipping away turned it up and an explosive overhand right landed right on the button of Rodriguez who dropped like a hot rock and looked like he may beat the count at six but slumped back to the canvas and was counted out at 2:13 of the first. So Ohashi will meet Komiyama in June and hopefully his skin can hold up.

In another undercard match we had Titing Dignos (15-2-1-3) looking to rebound from an eighth round TKO loss to Macario Santos back in January taking on TC Anthony Graham (0-0-0-0). In what should have been a get your confidence back type of match was all but that thru five rounds as Graham came to fight. Thru five I had the fight even. In the sixth Dignos was able to land a hook that cut Graham over the right eye. At this point Dignos took control and eventually the bout was stopped because of the cut in the tenth and final round.

Next we had Kenji Ono (9-2-1-1) looking to rebound from a twelve round unanimous decision loss to Kyung-Yun Lee for the vacant APBC Strawweight title back in February taking on TC Yoshihito Fujihara (1-5-0-0). Ono did as expected and dominated Lee for eight onesided rounds. Scores were 80-72 across the board.

We then had Wele Maqolo (1-0-1-0) easily outclass TC Yasser Fouad (0-1-0-0) over four rounds. Better performance then his debut back in February when he walked away with a draw. Scores were 40-36 across the board.

In the opening bout we had Rafael Torres (1-0-1-0) looking to pick up his first career victory over TC Gerrardo Alfonso (0-0-0-0) and after four action packed rounds. Torres earned the nod. Scores 40-37 twice and 39-37.

Straweight News

Next month WBC Champion Bong-Jun Kim (15-0-0-4) will defend his title against the number one WBC Contender Macario Santos (13-2-0-4). Santos earns this shot with his two victories this year an eighth round stoppage of Titing Dignos (15-2-1-3) and ten round unanimous decision victory over Hector Luis Patri (12-3-0-2). Kim looks to defend his title that he won with a fifth round DQ over Nick Dalisay (14-1-0-0). who will fight on the undercard versus Kyung-Yun Lee (16-1-0-6) for the APBC Straweight Championship and what will also be a title eliminator with the winner to face the WBC Champ in August.

Torres Narrowly Earns Decision over Tomori

#10 Jr Flyweight Contender German Torres (15-0-0-8) earned a hard fought majority decision over #9 ranked Tadashi Tomori (16-1-1-3). Thru the first two rounds it seemed Tomori was going to easily outbox Torres as he was landing with an incredible jab. The third round was even on my scorecard. Torres came out determined in the fourth and landed his first big punches of the fight which Tomori took well. Tomori launched his own bombs in the fourth and may have actually pulled out the round. Over the next two rounds both men fought at a great pace I scored one round even and one for Torres. As the sixth round began Torres looked more fatigued then Tomori but it may have been an illusion because Torres had his best round of the fight and was lighting Tomori up. Tomori withstood the barrage and remained calm firing back but could not match Torres' output. Over the last four rounds both men looked fatigued but kept fighting at a torrid pace. This is where Torres seemed to take over. The final round was incredible as both men went for broke as I had it even on my scorecard going into the last round. Both men stood and traded landing impressive bombs and to both mens credit they showed great chins as neither man was hurt thru out the bout. Torres won the tenth in my eyes but it was a very close round and the final scores showed it. Scores were 96-95 Torres, 95-95 and 97-94. This was a great victory for Torres who i'm sure will rise in the rankings and may get himself in line for a title shot.

In the co feature we had #17 Rudolfo Blanco (16-0-0-2) win a 10 round majority decision over # 23 ranked Pretty Boy Lucas (14-2-0-6). The pre-prime boxing Blanco did not perform like a 5-1 favorite as the pre-prime slugging Lucas made this fight interesting from the opening bell on. Blanco was gonna be in for a long night when early in the first a Lucas hook appeared to break Blanco's nose and caused him problems thru out the night as he was having a difficult time breathing. Lucas made this bout interesting throwing an incredible 1125 punches. I had the fight even after five rounds and while Lucas seemed tired as the sixth frame began it was Lucas who dominated the sixth and seventh rounds. The final three rounds were evenly fought but with a definate edge to Blanco. The scores were 96-95, 95-95 and 97-94 for Blanco who was definately tested in this one. "I stepped up in my level of competition and came thru with a win. Can't ask for more then that. I would have liked to have gotten him out of there, but a win is a win"

In the support bout #24 ranked Hilario Zapata (20-2-0-4) won a pretty convincing 8 round unanimous decison over # 23 ranked Hwan-Jin Kim (10-1-1-2). Zapata easily controlled the bout thru out but Kim did not lay down he tried for eight rounds but was just not in the same league as the 15-2 favorite Zapata. Zapata outlanded Kim 360-104 and at an accuracy rate of 69.4. How Kim absorbed that punishment and was never hurt is beyond me.

In the second preliminary bout we had Luis Estaba (5-1-0-3) win a pretty dull 6 round split decision over TC Jose Cordova(0-3-0-0). Estaba didn't seem like he wanted to be there and fought like it. Cordova outlanded Estaba 120-118.

In the first preliminary bout we saw explosive newcomer Alli Galvez (2-0-0-2) just demolish TC Jesus Barajas (1-3-0-0) with one right hook at 1:39 of the first round. Too early to tell if this kid will turn into something secial but he has been fun to watch in his first two bouts.

And finally in the opening bout we saw Rolando Pascua (1-0-0-0) easily outclass TC Jaime Amarias (0-5-0-0) over four rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory with scores of 40-36 across the board.

Gonzalez and Avelar Battle to a Draw

Both pre-prime sluggers Betulio Gonzalez (16-0-1-9) and Antonio Avelar (17-0-2-14) entered the ring with one thing in mind, to capture the SABC Flyweight Championship. And what a show these two put on. From the opening bell you knew you were gonna be treated to an all out war. In the first both men came out looking for the kayo and defense went out the window as both men scored with damaging blows. Late in the second Gonzalez landed a hook uppercut combo that dropped Avelar for a 3 count. Both men continued to slug it out over the next four rounds with Avelar seeming to get the better of it. As the seventh round began both men looked tired and at 1:34 a Gonzalez hook shook Avelar badly. Avelar managed to stay away and clinch to survive the round. In the ninth Avelar's corner felt he was behind and sent him out for the kill and at 1:58 a sizzling hook dropped Gonzalez, Gonzalez struggled to get to his feet by eight. Gonzalez got on his bicycle and managed to avoid further trouble. Both men came out in the tenth looking to end it and again both men stood and traded heavy shots with Avelar again getting the better of it. When the eleventh round started it was now Gonzalez' corner who felt he was behind and implored him to go after Avelar and go after him he did. at :40 a Gonzalez hook dropped Avelar for a 4 count Avelar was given the mandatory eight count. Gonzalez went right after Avelar and landed a hook to the body that reverbirated thru the arena and Avelar slumped to his knees. Avelar didn't look like he would beat the count but he was able to rise at eight. With over a minute to go in the round I was sure Gonzalez was gonna close the show but Avelar showed resiliancy and managed to remain upright. In the final round this fight was up for grabs and both men went for it. As both men stood and traded an Avelar hook buckled Gonzalez' legs badly, Gonzalez was forced to grab to remain on his feet. Avelar follwed up and landed two more brutal shots but Gonzalez was able to withstand it. Both men hugged exhausted as the final bell sounded. The scores were 114-110 for Gonzalez, 112-112 and 113-112 for Avelar. I don't think anyone was upset by the decision a truely great bout. And we can look forward to these two doing it again in a few months.

In the Co-feature we had #28 ranked Venice Borkorsor (16-0-0-12) and #20 ranked Candido Tellez (13-1-0-11) meeting in a ten round bout. Both of these pre-prime sluggers were in great shape for this bout and it showed. Like the main event both men threw defense out the window and were looking for a stoppage. The edge in power was definately in favor of Tellez who easily won the first two rounds. Borkorsor got it going in the third and was able to land some of his bombs. As the fourth round began both men moved to the inside and an incredible Borkorsor hook landed right on the button of Tellez who was out before he hit the floor. Why the ref bothered to count is beyond me. Impressive victory for Borkorsor.

In the support bout we had Berkrerk Chartvanchai (13-1-0-1) win a disputed eight round unanimous decision over Masaru Fuji (10-2-1-1). Both pre-prime boxers entered the ring in top shape for this eight rounder. After two Fuji easily outboxed and out landed Chartvanchai. The third, fourth and fifth rounds were close and I scored 1-1-1. so after five I had Fuji ahead 3-1-1. In the sixth Fuji did seem to start to wear down and Chartvanchai was able to get to Fuji with some nice combos. I felt Fuji was back in control in the seventh as again he easily outboxed Chartvanchai. The eighth round was very evenly fought with a definate edge going to Chartvanchai. I had the bout scored 76-75 for Fuji. When the decision was read I thought I must have watched a different fight as all three judges scored the bout for Chartvanchai. Scores read 77-75 twice, and 78-74. Even the fans booed the decision. Fuji ofcourse was beside himself as he felt he earned the decision.

In the second preliminary bout we had Rae-Ki Ahn (9-1-0-5) take on TC Tetsuyuki Mori****a (1-9-0-1). Ahn who was a 5-1 favorite started brilliantly landing at will and just tee'd off on Mori****a for two rounds before he got careless in the third and a Mori****a hook put Ahn to sleep. This definately throws a wrench in the plans as Ahn was being showcased in America for the first time.

In the first preliminary bout we had Eyup Can (2-0-0-0) easily outbox TC Markos Akii-Bua (1-2-0-0) over four rounds. Can shoed great boxing ability as he cruised to victory. Scores 39-37 across the board.

In the opening bout Nathan Ballerda (1-1-0-0) earned his first pro victory in a lack luster performance over TC Juan Avila (0-6-0-0).

# 36 Miguel Angel Cuello (17-2-0-5) vs # 34 David Sears (14-1-0-8)

Both men are in great shape for this 8 rounder. Both men are seeing action for the first time in 1986. And both men are facing their toughest challenge to date. Sears wins the opening round convincingly as he is using his jab to set up wicked rights and hurts Cuello late in the first with a solid right hook. Cuello wins a close second round as he is able to get inside and land some sharp uppercuts. Sears draws a warning from referee Curtis Thrasher. For leaning on the neck of Cuello. Thrasher then deducts a point from Cuello for a low blow that didn't seem to land. What a third round both men just stand and slug and botrh men land some incredible punches. Slightest of edges to Sears. Sears has a huge fourth round as he is able to hurt Cuello with a straight right hand. Sears is landing jab hook combos as the round comes to a close. Cuello has some swelling under the left eye as the round concludes. Cuello battles back in the fifth as Sears is looking fatigued. Cuello hurts Sears late in the round with a right hook. Sears gets on his horse and remains upright for the remainder of the round. Round six may be the round of the year. Both men look spent as they get off their stools. And both men are just letting it all hang out. They take turns rocking eachother and stumbeling across the ring it is amazing neither man goes down as there are some heavy punches being landed. Edge to Cuello as he hurt Sears on a number of occasions here in the sixth. Sears left eye is also showing swelling as the round concludes. Cuello has a big seventh round as Sears looks worse for wear and is hurt again by a Cuello hook. Sears battles back and both mens eyes are a mess. To the eighth and final round. Both men touch gloves and we begin. Cuello lands a huge uppercut and Sears is rocked. A 1:30 in a Sears hook drops Cuello for a 6 count. Cuello struggles to rise to his feet and makes it to the end. Scores should be interesting. 76-75 Sears, 76-76 and 76-75 for the winner by majority decision David Sears. Knockdown late earned Sears the nod. Great fight.

Lora gets the nod after a thrilling 12 round split decision victory over Lupe Pintor to defend his SABC Bantamweight Championship. This is Lora's second victory this year and took a big step up in competition and showed he will be a force in the Bantamweight division. "This fight shows i'm ready to get in there with the best the division has to offer. I hope to be in the top ten by the end of the year and maybe challenge for a title next year"

APBC Jr Bantamweight Championship Ends In Controversy

Thailand's Kongtoranee Payakaroon (14-2-1-9) and Korean Ju-Do Chun (9-0-2-1) met for the vacant APBC Jr Bantamweight Championship in front of a pro Chun crowd at the Bucheon University in South Korea. To even things out The referee selected for the bout was Thailand's Chalerm Prayadsab and who would of thought the referee would have created so much controversy. After eleven very close and competitive rounds this fight was very much up for grabs going into the last round. In the twelfth round Chun was unloading on Payakaroon and was easily on his way to winning the round big when Prayadsab stopped the action and deducted a point from Chun for a low blow that no one at ringside seemed to see land. Thus leaving the last round to be scored 9-9. When the decision was announced that point deduction cost Chun the fight. Scores were 115-113 Chun and 114-114 twice. The crowd was obviously angered and what had been a great fight quickly turned bad. Prayadsab had to be escorted from the ring under the safety of security staff. The bout itself was very exciting. Payakaroon clearly the harder puncher of the two landed bombs thru out the bout while Chun used superior boxing skills to keep Payakaroon at bay. Payakaroon has not had much luck since fighting outside of his native Thailand as he lost a decision in Mexico to Armando Castro (24-0-2-19) back in January and now this match here in Thailand. With the help of an interpreter Payakaroon had this to say. "It was a close fight I felt I earned the decision as I landed the harder punches." Chun obviously upset had this to say. "That ref cost me the fight. I easily won the last round and should have got the decision." Good news is these two will meet up again in June.

Next we had #11 ranked Gustavo Ballas (14-0-0-2) taking on #10 ranked Chul-Ho Kim (12-1-0-5). This bout was competative thru the first seven rounds as both men had there moments. Ballas landing the harder cleaner shots while Kim used the ring to counter Ballas effectively. After the seventh Kim seemed gassed and it showed as Ballas took control easily winning the eighth round and punctuated the fight with a huge ninth round scoring a knockdown with a brutal hook. Kim rose at nine and managed to finish the fight.

Next we had #18 Jiro Wantanabe (22-1-0-18) taking on #16 Roberto Ramirez (15-2-0-10). Ramirez started quickly landing some haymakers on the jaw of Wantanabe in the first who continued to plow forward and land his own bombs. In the second Wantanabe took control from the opening minute of the round and just pasted Ramirez with rights and lefts. In the third Wantanabe continued his assault and Perez Huerta was close to stopping the bout as Ramirez was defensless against the ropes wwhen a Wantanabe hook dropped Ramirez for the 10 count at 2:57

In the opening bout we had pre-prime boxer Jackal Maruyama (14-3-1-4) facing Rafael Orono (14-2-1-3). Orono was looking to rebound from a 10 round split decision loss to Thanomsak Sithbaobay (23-0-0-5) back in February while Maruyama was looking to rebound from a fifth round knockout loss to Khaosai Galaxy (18-0-0-18) back in January. This was a typical back and fourth fight as both men alternated rounds thru the first six. early in the second a Orono hook opened a nasty gash under the right eye of Maruyama and the ref quickly brought Maruyama to the physician for an examination. The doc allowed the fight to continue and what a job Maruyama's corner did as the cut would not reopen again until the seventh. Late in the fifth a Maruyama hook rattled Orono badly. Thru six I had the fight even and in the seventh a Maruyama hook strayed south of the border and it cost him a point. so After seven it was even on my card and it was at this point Orono took over winning the eighth and ninth rounds easily as he was the fresher of the two and landed some great combos. Maruyama won a very lack luster tenth round as both men were fatigued and could not sustain much of an offense. I Had Orono winning by a point. Scores were 96-95 Maruyama, 96-93 Orono and the final judge scored it 95-95 a draw. The decision seemed ok with the crowd who cheered both men.Should make for a great rematch.

Oscar Muniz Wins NABF Bantamweight Championship In Bloody Battle

Scranton Pa was the sight of this bloody war. Oscar Muniz (17-0-0-14) took on Frankie Duarte (14-1-1-4) in a match for the vacant NABF Bantamweight Championship. Both men came into this 12 rounder in excellant shape and just went toe to toe for 12 exciting rounds. Muniz' cutman Dave Tenny is to be commended for keeping Muniz in this match. After the third round Muniz had suffered a cut above the left eye and the same eye was also begining to swell. You knew you were in for a battle when early in the first a Muniz hook rattled Duarte who fired right back and never backed down. Over the course of the fight both men landed some incredible punches it was amazing no one visited the canvas thru eight rounds. In the ninth Duarte looking to catch a breather was lazy with a jab and a sizzling right hand counter from Muniz dropped Duarte for a nine count. Muniz waas unable to follow up as he was to tired. Also in the ninth round both Muniz and Duarte suffered cuts. Muniz under the left eye and Duarte over the forehead. So when the ninth round closed the whole left side of the face of Muniz was a mess. From the ninth round on Muniz controlled the action landing the harder cleaner punches, thats not to say Duarte did not have his moments. The way Muniz' face looked I was sure this would not goto the judges. The cuts reopend three times but the ringside physician was never called into play. When the scores were announced they were a little more lopsided then I thought. 115-114 for Duarte, 116-113 for Muniz and 117-112 for Muniz. I feel the fight was closer but Muniz definately earned the victory over the last four rounds.

In the co-feature we had #8 ranked Alfonso Zamora (22-1-0-22) taking on #9 ranked Nana Konadu (18-0-0-12). Both men were seeing action for the first time in 1986. Zamora was a beast as he was only landing bombs trying to get Konadu out of there. Late in the third a Zamora hook dropped Konadu for a nine count. Luckily for Konadu it was late in the round and Zamora was unable to follow up. Again in the fifth Zamora hurt Konadu with a straight right hand. Konadu got on his bicycle and survived Zamora's onslaught. Going into the eighth Zamora was well ahead on all three scorecards and he wen't looking for the kayo. and as he stepped in to get inside Konadu launched a picture perfect uppercut that caught Zamora cleanly and the crowd was just stunned as Zamora slumped face first to the canvas. Zamora tried to get to his feet but he had no control of his body and was counted out at 1:56 of the eighth round. No one expected the 3-1 underdog Konadu to stop Zamora with one punch but he has and is definately lining himself up nicely for a title shot.

Next we had #20 ranked Raul Perez (21-0-0-19) taking on #15 Daorung Chuvatana (16-1-0-16) in a scheduled 10 round bout. With the records of both men we were expecting an all out brawl and that was what we were treated to. Perez came out strong as he was able to drop the pre-prime Chuvatana for a nine count in the second round. Chuvatana finally was able to land some power shots on Perez in the fourth. Perez was rocked on several occasions none more worse then the seventh round when a Chuvatana hook exploed off the left side of his face and tore a cut over the left eyelid and left the eye swelling as the round closed. The tide seemed to be turning in Chuvatana's favor but late in the eighth round a Perez uppercut dropped Chuvatana for a 4 count. Perez then took over for the remainder of the fight even dropping Chuvatana once more in the tenth for a six count. Scores were all in favor of Perez 98-90, 98-89 and 98-91. Perez will likely make a move up in the rankings. Chuvatana should rebound from this bout. I look forward to seeing him fight again.

Next we had Joe Araki (12-3-2-1) looking to rebound from a 10 round unanimous decision loss to Enrique Pinder back in January taking on Freddy Jackson (7-4-1-1) who himself is looking to rebound from a 3 bout losing streak the last of which was a 6th round TKO loss at the hands of Sulley ****tu back in February. This was a very competative match that I had scored even thru four. At this point at least in my eye Jackson seemed to take over and clearly win the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. The eighth was a slow round that may have been edged by Araki. I felt Jackson had done enough to earn the victory but the judges did not agree. Scores were 77-76 for Jackson and 76-76 twice. Jackson was a little down after the decision but did say he would like to meet Araki again and settle this.

Next we had Rollie Penaroya (2-0-0-2) taking on Koichi Yoshimura (0-3-0-0). At first all were a little concerned as Yoshimura was easily out boxing Penaroya thru three rounds until an explosive hook in the fourth ended the bout. Penaroya was behind on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

In the opening bout we had Al Cabillan (0-0-2-0) facing Tsuramatsu Kouki (0-3-3-0) for the second time this year as Kouki held Cabillan to a draw two months ago. And again Cabillan wins the first two rounds convincingly and does nothing in the third and fourth round to again walk away with a draw.

Palma Captures SABC Jr Featherweight Title

Rosario Argentina was the site of the Inaugural SABC Jr Featherweight Championship. The hometown hero Sergio Palma (19-0-0-2) came into the fight as a 7-2 favorite over Panama's Carlos Mendoza (22-2-1-12). Mendoza not hampered by the pro Palma crowd came out quickly and tested Palma's chin early as he landed an incredible right hook :30 into the first. Mendoza continued to land well in the first but never hurt Palma. Midway thru the second a Palma uppercut dropped Mendoza for a five count. Palma remained controlled and didn't get careless. As the round closed Mendoza had same severe swelling under the left eye. After the second Mendoza seemed a little reluctant to trade with the light hitting Palma but with the swelling i'm sure he couldn't see the punches coming. Palma dominated the fight from the second thru the tenth, in the tenth Mendsoza knew he had to turn it up and he had his best round of the fight since the first landing some power shots. Palma was back in control in the eleventh as he continued to pepper Mendoza whose eye was now a swollen mass. In the final round they implored Mendoza to go for the knockout and with :32 seconds left in the twelfth a Mendoza hook dropped Palma for a three count. Mendoza tried to finish it but Palma was not hurt that badly and stayed out of harms way for the final :28. Scorecards were a foregone conclusion except on the card of Chuck Giampa who scored the fight alot more closely then I did giving the nod to Palma by the score of 115-112 while I was more inline with the other two judges who scored for Palma 117-110. This was a big win for Palma who i'm sure will crack the top ten rankings with this victory.

In the Co-Feature we had #7 ranked Valerio Nati (20-2-1-4) taking on #8 ranked Soo-Hwan Hong (18-0-0-0). Hong a slight 2-1 favorite coming into the bout had given interviews prior to the bout stating he had not trained as well as he should have. This fight turned out to be one hell of a fight. Nati came out quickly and had a huge first round as he was tattooing Hong with speedy combos. The third round had the makings for round of the year as both men literally stood toe to toe and just whaled on eachother, if either man had some power this one would have ended early. Thru five rounds I had Hong ahead by a point but as the sixth round started Hong looked fatiuged and Nati took control winning rounds six, seven, eight and nine on my card. Going into the tenth I had Nati comfortably ahead. Hong won the tenth round as both men were fatigued and he just outworked Nati. When the scores were read the crowd erupted into a chorus of boo's 96-95 Hong, 97-94 Nati and 96-95 for Hong. Nati was definately the victim of a horrible scoring job.

In the support bout we had Mike Ayala (18-2-0-10) looking to rebound from back to back losses the last of which was a 10 round unanimous decision loss to Shigeru Sasaki back in February. His opponent Ruben Palacios (9-3-0-3) coming off of a victory over the same opponent Sasaki back in december. Ayala came out to show he was the better man started quickly as he unloaded on Palacios who remained calm and managed to fire back some nice counters. Midway thru the second a Palacios hook exploded off the jaw of Ayala whose legs buckled ever so slightly. Ayala was quick to get on his bicycle and survive from any further damage. From this point on Ayala just dominated Palacios who seemed to be trying to load up on one punch instead of mixing it up. When the scores were read everyone was in favor of the decision. All three judges scored for Ayala 77-75 twice and 78-74

In the opening bout we had Freddy Cruz (1-0-1-0) taking on TC Antonio Cruz (0-5-1-0). Antonio came out fast trying to upset the newcomer and landed some great combos. Freddy took over in the second and third and was boxing beautifully peppering Antonio with lefts and rights When the last round started Freddy just seemed to shut it down and Antonio easily won the fourth thus earning a draw by scores of 38-38 across the board. Disappointing showing by Freddy Cruz

Aragon Stops Yoshida In 9 To Capture APBC Featherweight Title

Philipino Hilbert Aragon (15-5-0-2) traveled to Yokohama Japan to take on defending Champion Shuzo Yoshida (13-2-1-5) for the APBC Featherweight Championship. Aragon was looking to rebound from a fourth round knockout at the hands of Juan Malvarez back in January. Yoshida captured the title back in January with a second round knockout over Tomio Nakamura. The first two rounds were pretty evenly fought with no real edge to either fighter but that all changed in the third. Aragon came out like a man possesed and was just teeing off on Yoshida who did not seem to have any answers for Aragon's incredible combos. As the third round closed Yoshida's right eye was starting to swell. Aragon kept up the presure in the fourth and fifth and continued to hammer away at Yoshida who seemed completely frustrated. In the sixth Yoshida was able to land a crisp right hook that hurt Aragon who was also starting to show some swelling under the right eye. Yoshida was slowly edging his way back into the fight as he wons round six, seven and eight. In the ninth both men were looking to end this but and 1:23 into the ninth a sizzling Aragon cross dropped Yoshida who tried gallantly to rise but was unable to do so. Yoshida speaking thru a translater had these comments " I got careless and did not take Aragon seriously and I paid for it. I have shamed my self". Aragon's comments "I knew I could win this fight people underestimated me because I have five losses, that don't mean nothing. I plan to keep busy and keep my career going in the right direction".

In the Co-Feature we had #11 ranked Pat Cowdell (20-0-0-16) taking on # 5 ranked Min-Keun Oh (25-1-0-7). Oh who was a victory away from competing for a title came into the bout looking soft which was a mistake as Cowdell came to fight and fight he did. Early in the first a Cowdell hook dropped Oh for a four count. Cowdell poured it on trying to end it but Oh showed great recuperative powers and survived the round. Cowdell domintaed the first four rounds as he was landing bombs on the jaw of Oh who was now taking the punches well. In the fifth Oh landed his best punches of the fight and was able to start some swelling under the right eye of Cowdell. The swelling did not seem to bother Cowdell as he resumed control in the sixth and continued to land at will. In the ninth Cowdell came out strong and was able ti hurt Oh with a sizzling right hand right down the middle. Cowdell then landed a brutal uppercut that dropped Oh for a nine count. Oh was obviously out on his feet as he rose and a few more Cowdell bombs forced Jay Nady to halt the bout at 2:04. Big win for Cowdell and a devestating loss for Oh who dropped out of the top ten with this loss.

In the support bout we had Ernesto Marcel (17-1-0-15) facing Bernard Taylor (12-2-0-11). This was a very competative bout as both men were willing to stand and trade. Both men landed some grat shots and both men showed great chins. Thru five rounds I had Marcel ahead by one point. At this point Marcel seemed to take control and dominated the sixth and seventh rounds. Taylor battled in the eighth and may have pulled it out. All three judges scored in favor of Marcel 77-76, 78-76 and 78-75. Great win for Marcel.

Next we had Hector Lizarraga (16-3-0-9) looking to rebound from a fifth round DQ loss to Cesar Amazan back in January taking on Marcos Villasana (18-3-0-14) looking to end a two bout losing streak. Villasana was never in this one Lizarraga completely dominated this one. Villasana landed some bombs but was never able to hurt Lizarraga. As the eighth and final round started Villasana knew he needed to do something big but it again was Lizarraga who landed an explosive right hook that caused Villasana to slump to the canvas and be counted out at 2:38. This is three losses in a row for Villasana who has to seriously reconsider his life choices. Lizarraga looked incredibly impressive.

Next we had Yong-Kyun Park (1-0-1-0) facing TC Shigekazu Mori (2-5-2-1). This was an evenly fought match and the cores showed it. One judge scored for Mori 39-37 while the final two scored it 38-38. Mori is one tough TC who holds victories over Luisto Expinoza, Current APBC Champ Hilbert Aragon and also held Tomio Nakamura to a draw.

In the opening bout of the evening we had Paul Hodkinson (2-0-0-2) facing TC Bryan Allen (0-2-0-0). Hodkinson started quickly as he dropped Allen for a six count in the first and pummeled him over the first three rounds. In the fourth an Allen hook opened a cut over the left eye of Hodkinson. This did not effect Hodkinson as he went about his business and ended the fight with a right hook at 2:59 of the fourth round.

Tony"The Tiger"Lopez Captures NABF Jr. Lightweight Championship

Tony"The Tiger"Lopez (19-0-0-17) walked into the ring at Bally's looking out of shape and walked out with the NABF Jr Lightweight Championship. Lopez stopped tough Frankie Baltazar (18-1-0-8) in the eighth round of a scheduled twelve. The fight wasn't easy for Lopez as Baltazar came to fight and started quickly nailing Lopez early in the first. Lopez battled back in the second and had a huge round as he pasted Baltazar with vicious hooks and straight rights. In the third Baltazar seemed to be getting back in control until a Lopez hook dropped Baltazar for a three count. Lopez controlled the fourth and fifth round as he continued to rattle Baltazar. In the fifth Baltazar started to turn the tide as he rocked Lopez with a wicked combonation. Baltazar followed the fifth with a great sixth as well he landed some great combos and Lopez seemed to be slowing down. In the eighth Lopez came out looking to get back in charge of things and early in the eighth an explosive hook dropped Baltazar for a nine count. with 1:55 left to go in the round Baltazar had his work cut out for him and a few seconds later a brutal Lopez combo dropped Baltazar this time for an eight count as Baltazar struggled to get to his feet referee Brian Garry waved it off and Lopez leaped into the air to celebrate his victory.

In the co-feature #9 ranked Jackie Beard (22-0-0-11) easily out boxed the very game #10 ranked Frankie Otero (17-1-0-10) scoring knockdowns in the ninth and tenth rounds. Scores we all in favor of Beard 100-89, 98-91 and 99-89. In the support Bout Barry Michael (11-2-3-1) appeard on his way to an upset over Leonel Hernandez (15-1-0-9) until a bad gash over the right eye ended his night. Hernandez was surprised by how accurate Michael's punches were. Mexico's Jorge Paez (9-3-1-4) continued to implode dropping his third fight in a row, second of which was by DQ as he was disqualified in the fifth round of a fight he had well in hand agains Hengky Gun (14-2-0-5). Also on the undercard Blazer Okubo (12-2-0-3) easily outpointed south africa's Evans Gwiji (10-6-2-2) over sixz rounds. And in the opener John-John Molina (2-0-0-0) won a four round unanimous decision over Steve Head (1-4-0-1) scoring a knockdown in the third and almost finishing him in the fourth but Head proved to be tough.

With my head usually in the heavyweights with my own sims, I really enjoy this uni. Sometimes we tend to forget all of the greats in the lower weight divisions. You're doing an excellent job educating/reminding us with this uni

Thanks Professor. I have to admit I usually didn't keep track of many fighters below the lightweight division but since starting this uni I seem to be learning alot myself about these lower weight talents.
