Fausto!

Looking at his last three starts, Carmona's done a pretty decent job of keeping the ball earthbound.

Be careful, dh, you keep talking about on topic things and the mods will move this thread to Off Topic.

And, then I'll never have to look at the mistake by the lake thread again. It's a win win situation.

Daisuke get smacked around by the mighty Cleveland offense. Not been a great start to the season by Matsuzaka, 7-3, 4.83 ERA. His peripherals and talent speak to the notion that that won't last long.

I'd never heard of the Cleveland. reliever who got hammered last night in relief of Fausto Carmona. I think it is safe to say that Tom Mastny is the first player in MLB history to have East Bontang for a hometown. Is it too cliche that Cleveland would be the team to sign MLB's first player born in Indonesia?

Mastny actually worked as our closer for much of the latter part of last year, after the Trade of Wickman and the inability of Carmona to close out games. He didn't do too bad for a quick fix.

Hey, Indians fans, don't miss the Friday game as Reds uber pitching prospect, Homer Bailey, makes his major league debut against the Tribe. Think Lincecum or Hughes quality when you want an idea of the scouts regard for this kid.

a debut like Lincecum's or Hughes' would suit me fine

He's not Indonesian, though, from Wiki-

Quote:
Mastny's birthplace was briefly the source of some confusion after the Philadelphia Daily News's Paul Hagen reported incorrectly on August 11, 2006, "it was discovered that the [Cleveland Indians] media guide lists Indiana-born reliever Tom Mastny as being from Indonesia". Hagen's quote was part of a brief that was syndicated on several Internet news sites and subsequently was repeated by other writers and bloggers. That same weekend, it was reported that members of the Society for American Baseball Research had contacted Mastny's father to confirm that, although the family hails from Indiana, the pitcher was indeed born on the Indonesian island of Borneo.
That the relatively unknown player's biographical trivia would be subject to scrutiny is in part due to historical implications, as Mastny is the first Indonesian-born individual to reach the major leagues, as reported by Scouts Inc. scribe Keith Law, in his July 9, 2006 column for ESPN Insider.
"Cleveland farmhand Tom Mastny was born in Indonesia," wrote Law, "although it was to American parents who wanted to travel the world. The 6-5 [sic] Mastny has a fringe-average fastball but outstanding control, and with a good season so far between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo, he seems likely to become the first big leaguer born in Indonesia, which would become the 52nd country to produce a major league player."

It seemed a logical conclusion that Mastny wasn't an Indonesian name.

It seems like very few teams have the restaint these days to keep their pithcing prospects in AAA for more time. They seem to be "rushing" their prospects up faster and faster--or maybe its just me.

It's not just you. I hear this all the time in print, radio/tv, but the numbers don't bear this out. The average age of pitchers making their MLB debut has been rising.

Average age of rookie pitchers, 1960-1994: 24.30
Average age of rookie pitchers, 1995-2007: 25.01

And, as has been stated elsewhere, good pitchers have never spent a lot of time down on the farm.

Indians catchers current batting lines.......

Victor Martinez: .323/.382/.541 (on a pace for 33 HR and 151 RBI)
Kelly Shoppach: .386/.462/.596

That is ****ing insane hitting for the backstop position.

His peripherals have improved to the point that he's got over a 2/1 K/BB ratio and he's still inducing grounders over 60% of the time. He could end up being a legit #2 starter.
