Incident In Mexico City

from the Houston Daily News, August 22, 1903:

A blast tore through the Confederate embassy in Mexico City yesterday, extensively damaging the building and killing more than two dozen Confederate citizens. A cable was received at the consulate in Tampico, from a group claiming responsibility. The cable, from a group calling itself Sonora Libre, claims that the embassy bombing was done to convince the Confederate government to return Sonora and Chihuahua to Mexico. The former Mexican provinces both received Confederate statehood in 1899.

President Pritchard, visiting New Orleans, denounced the bombing and promised a full investigation....

USPBO Standings, Sept. 1, 1903

from the Sporting Way, September 3, 1903:

SAN DIEGO CONTINUES TO DOMINATE PACIFIC LEAGUE PLAY - With three batters (Ginger Beaumont, Joe Tinker and Fred Tenney) all hitting over .300, contributing to the league's best batting average, and with the pitching staff putting up the stingiest ERA in either league (2.65), it's no wonder that the Conquistadors of San Diego have opened up an 11.5 game lead in the Pacific League race.

The New York Giants continue to lead in the Federal, with Boston 4.5 back and still in the hunt. Boston's chances have been severely hampered, however, as hurler Christy Mathewson went down to injury and won't return for two weeks.

Woodrow Wilson Leads the Investigation

from the Richmond Courier, September 9, 1903:

President Pritchard announced the formation of a blue-ribbon commission to investigate the bombing of the Confederate Embassy in Mexico City last month. Selected to head the commission is the President of William & Mary College, Mr. Woodrow Wilson. The staid Wilson, said to be a possible candidate for the governor's seat of his native Virginia in the next election, was quoted as saying, "This solemn responsibility is one I will discharge with all the energy in my being. The truth will be found, and the perpertrators brought to justice..."

Conquistadors and Giants Win Pennants

from the Sporting Way, September 22, 1903:

CONQUISTADORS RUN AWAY WITH PENNANT - It all came together for the San Diego Conquistadors this season. They led both leagues in team batting average (.268), runs scored (664), ERA (2.63), opponents' batting average (.234) and runs allowed (477). The offense, keyed by Joe Tinker at the top of the order with run producers Ginger Beaumont and Fred Tenney behind him, is a well-oiled machine. The mound corps is anchored by Bill Dinneen (21-9, 2.19), who is possibly the top pitcher in all of baseball, and he's followed by Bill Donovan (17-10, 2.62) and Jack Taylor (19-14, 2.63) who was last season's top hurler. The Conquistadors go into the Championship series with a swagger and plan on bringing the trophy West with them when they finish with the New Yorkers.

GIANTS NOT FLASHY, BUT WIN PENNANT AGAIN - Rube Waddell said it best when asked about his team: "We just win. Pretty or ugly, a victory's a victory and we get 'em any way we can." The defending champions won their second-straight Federal League flag with pitching, defense, and just enough offense. The pitchers, led by the aforemetioned Waddell (22-10, 2.22), posted the third best ERA in baseball (2.93) and was second only to San Diego in opponents' batting average (.235). Afield, the infield is rock solid with Grant Johnson and Shad Barry at the corners and Gene DeMontreville and mid-season pickup Charlie Grant up the middle. Heidrick, Freeman and Hartsel are accomplished, but not flashy, flycatchers, and catchers Hughie Hearne and Frank Bowerman aren't in the lineup for their bats. Offensively, Johnson had a huge season, clouting 20 longballs and driving in 82 while Heidrick and Freeman each had quietly productive seasons, with 85 and 75 driven in respectively. Though the Conquistadors have all the flash, the Giants hope to quietly shock the world and take home their second straight World's Championship.

Snowfall, Part 2

Top Secret Memorandum, CS President Pritchard to General R.E. Stuart:

October 5, 1903:

General,

Congratulations on the successful achievement of phase one of Operation Snowfall back in August. The time has now come to ratchet things up a level. Phase Two's target should be in place later this week. You know what to do. As always, if captured, we will disavow knowledge, et cetera. Good luck, General.

- President Pritchard

Giants Make It Two For Two

from the Sporting Way, October 10, 1903:

GIANTS WIN GAME NINE SHOWDOWN - After eight back-and-forth, grueling contests, the championship series came down to the final game for the second time in its two-year history. And, for the second time, it was the Giants of New York, who came out on top.

Whereas a year ago, the New Yorkers were the favorites and the team who built a seemingly insurmountable lead only to watch a very game Portland Lumberjack squad roar back to force a decisive game nine, this time it was the Federal Leaguers turn to be underdogs. And they relished the role, building a quick 2-0 series lead at home before dropping the first two in San Diego to leave the series tied after the first four contests. The teams split again in New York, sending it back to the West Coast all tied at three games each.

With three straight games in San Diego, the Giants showed their resilience, winning game seven, three to one, as Rube Vickers shut down the powerful San Diego lineup. Game eight was a true classic as the teams battled into extra innings, before Fred Tenney's single in the 11th drove Joe Tinker home to again square the series for San Diego and force another decisive game.

In game nine, the Giants sent Rube Waddell to the mound for his first appearance since game one, where he was injured. Waddell wasn't 100% and after five innings, the Conquistadors led the Giants 5-2. In the top of the sixth, the Giants rallied: Freeman singled and stole second then scored on Heidrick's double. Grant Johnson took an intentional pass and Shad Barry followed with a single to score Heidrick and chase Johnson to third where he scored on DeMontreville's single to tie the score.

It remained five-all into the eighth when Heidrick led off with a single and after he stole second, the Conquistadors elected to walk Johnson again. A fielder's choice erased Johnson, but sent Heidrick to third where he scored on DeMontreville's single. A double-steal by Barry and DeMontreville set up a second and third with one out for Hughie Hearne with the infield in. Hearne rifled a shot past Tinker into left and two runs scored. The next two outs were made quickly, but San Diego was now in a three-run hole with six outs of life left.

After a one-two-three eighth, the Conquistadors put two men on in the ninth, but Waddell got Tenney on a pop to first baseman Barry, who squeezed it for the championship clinching out. The Giants are the repeat champions of baseball.

A Second Incident

from the Little Rock Times Picayune, October 21, 1903:

FORT LONGSTREET SHELLED BY MEXICANS - In the predawn hours yesterday a series of large explosions rocked Fort Longstreet, the Confederacy's largest frontier post in Southern Sonora. Preliminary reports indicate that the attack was from artillery based across the border in Mexico.

The Mexican government claims no knowledge of the attack, stating that they have no artillery within range of Ft. Longstreet. The statement from Mexico City added that they are cooperating with the investigation by the Wilson Commission, and hope that the new incident will not further inflame relations between the Confederate States and their southern neighbors.

President Pritchard called the attack "an act of war" and added that "only the uncertainties surrounding the responsibility for this dire action" are preventing the CSA from immediately declaring war upon Mexico.

Commissioner Wilson was present at the Fort during the attack, but suffered only slight injuries when the concussion from the first explosion threw him into a wall. He is said to be in good condition at Our Lady of Guadelupe hospital in Hamptonburg (formerly Novojoa), the capital of Sonora.

I found a basic map of North America thru Google and then colored in the states with Photoshop. I had to change some borders too, but basically that's how it was done.

Stoking The Fires

Editorial from the Washington Evening World, October 31, 1903:

The continued atrocities committed - or at the very least sanctioned - by the Mexican government, can no longer go unpunished. All patriotic Confederates must write their congressman, parade in the streets, in short do anything to pressure the government in Richmond to find satisfaction. The honor of the Confederacy has been sullied, and that should not go unpunished...

I have to say I've been following this since it started, and I love it, being the Civil War era buff that I am.

And yes, in your realilty, this seems like a combo Remember the Alamo/Maine warmonger approach with Mexico, and I must say it works perfectly. I think it fits very well, especially at the turn of the century.

That being said, go Philadelphia, even though they finished dead least this past season!

sweet. My history is spot on. I will say though that unlike the Maine, and the US taking on a very weak Spain, the CSA is taking on a country that is probably their equal in both size and military power, and Mexico possibly has a lot more manpower to draw upon.

Of coruse they were also having the reputation of being less organized?

The Wilson Commission Report

excerpt from The Report of the Wilson Commission on Attacks Against Confederate Property and Persons in the Empire of Mexico, November 17, 1903:

...it has been concluded that the so-called freedom fighters are, in fact, agents of the Imperial Government of Mexico and that the Imperial Government of Mexico both provided the manpower and the material necessary for the attacks on the Embassy of The Confederate States of America in Mexico City, and the Confederate Army's Fortress Longstreet in Sonora....
