I'm in for two copies now, and should be purchasing a third once the Mac version is available.

Be nice to get an initial discount when that's available, too (hint, hint).

I just had to defend the sacred honor of the Sons of the South.

Quote from a post:

"I'm too smart to be the governor of a large Southern state."
-Richard "Kinky" Friedman

Thank Heaven, that We Southerners are not smart enough to move to the wonderful frigid lands north of the Mason-Dixon line...replete with cities overcrowded with brilliant minds and an outrageous cost of living (my po' little old 150-thousand dollar shack would cost over a million in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut...a large pack of gum in the ignorant South is 99 cents...$1.40 in NY...and it has a very hectic and way too fast lifestyle for me...I don't want to spend 2-3 hours a day in the subway or train.

In my very humble opinion, Kinky..."Ignorance is bliss".

But for those people, who like living in the North, that is great. It is just not my cup of moonshine.

Right there with you, EC! For those that build their lives in a temple of man and not nature, go for it! If you have to denegrate others because of their lack of education to feel good about yourself, maybe NYC is the right place for you. Because down here we're nothing but slack jawed yockles that have one legged family trees.

Guys, I live in the South, too, and so does Kinky. His snub isn't against the South, it's against the Texas governor and his ineptitude.

Context, fellas. Context. Which I should provide next time.

Pre-ordered. But for some reason, my discount, because I live in Japan, only brought my price down to $38 (32 Euros). So I had someone order for me in the states. Maybe elicence should revisit the regions/currencies setup for this.

No problem, enuttage.

Sometimes I am a little too sensitive. I lived in Cleveland for a year and my co-workers there were surprised that I was educated because my speech was slow and regionalized. I told them not to judge people because of a different speech pattern and their ethnic origins. It was no indication of their educational background. Not bragging, but they soon found out that I had a pretty good college education and had studied two languages and could function in both and was well-versed in history, politics, music, sports, movies and tv. One of them said I wasn't like other Southerners. I told her there were a lot more like me in the South.

How a Redneck from the South could have an education bewildered them.

They also couldn't under the fact that I was not prejudiced in racial relations as "all" Southerners are "supposed" to be.

I've got sort of the same aversion to wisecracks on the South (I've probably been TOO defensive in OT about this same thing of late).

You are not alone, that's for sure. I've experienced this first-hand, but not as bad as a former co-worker of mine in New Jersey. Man she got put through the ringer. She had a thick Texas twang, but was a Latina lady, and it just baffled the folks in Jersey. They had a hard time getting past it.

At first she didn't mind the attention, but it got really old, really quick with her. Not with them, though.

But, hey. Whatcha gonna do. Roll with it and surprise 'em, as you did.

Eugene, I first ran into Kinky - Richard, if you want to get technical - back in the seventies. I know him to nod to him, if you know what I mean; he got out of UT a long time before I did, but there are only so many cool places around Austin to hang out (and there were fewer of them then) so you tend to recognize everyone significant after a while. He was born up north but moved to Texas as a little kid and he loves Texas with a passion. He had a really odd and not-very-good band for a while - Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, a name that upset a lot of people - and then he started writing detective novels. These days he's sort of running for governor; he ran for something small once, like JP or such but I can't remember exactly, and got trounced doing it some years ago, but here he goes again. Mostly.

He doesn't hate the South. I think he does hate stupidity and conventional thinking, but that's an interpretation. He's bright, bold, and funny. You should cut him some slack.

Not really advice that everyone seems to follow, but YMMV.

People from the old Tex-Mex families confuse the heck out of folks. I used to have a roommate from one of the pre-War of Independence Tex-Mex families who looked like an Aztec. He spoke perfect English, but he didn't - or chose not to, I was never really sure which - speak hardly any Spanish. Me, I look like an SS trooper but I do speak the language like a Sonoran, and people just couldn't wrap their minds around the pair of us.

Hey MD,

I think Eugene gets it now. He just (understandably) took the quote out of context. I think those of us who are well-educated Southerners have a bit of an axe to grind with those who like to paint millions of us with a broad brush. I'm definitely one of 'em.

Just as you and the 'Kinkster' can recognize each other coming and going, I worked for Don Imus for awhile and was on freelance assignment with MSNBC down here for one of Friedman's Utopia Rescue Ranch 'Bone-I-Fits' one summer.

Man was that guy fun to hang out with for the weekend.

And yeah, everyone here is a potential sheep in wolf's clothing. Just like my friend who was a golden bronze but didn't speak a lick of English, my wife is much like you. She's white as snow, but can scare the daylights out of two machismo guys talking about her as she walks by when she turns around and addresses them fluently.

It's a good place we live in. Full of constant surprises.

Heck, I may recognize *you* on sight, then.

Yeah, I can't count the number of jaw-dropping surprises I've had. The old Armadillo World Headquarters used to be Surprise Central back in the day. These days I mainly get them at The County Line or at Iron Works, with a few at Chuy's and The Oasis.

I'm fixing to have a lot fewer, though. As soon as I can get the Small Blonde to agree, I'm planning on moving on down the road to San Marcos.

Well, I may be working there semi-permanently soon, with any luck at all.

If you move there, look me up.

Back on the topic of preordering, I just picked up my first license.

This may be mentioned somewhere in the thread above, but in case it isn't I'd like to let people know the pre-order discount only applies to one license at a time, so when ordering more than one you should make them separate purchases to get the savings.

My business venture stands to be parked off of Yarrington Road between I-35 and SH-21 in N. San Marcos.

If you move there, look me up at Harris Hill Road, Inc. in about six months and I'll take you on a little drive.
Well, I may NOT be working there semi-permanently soon, with any luck at all.

I think I know where that is - on the right after you go through the double jog on Yarrington going away from the interstate?

See you in six, I hope. Traffic get to you, too?
