May 1884
1st June 1884 The fans of the Atlantics are starting to dream about a pennant run again as they saw an excellent month from their team in May. The team managed to pick up 19 wins from their 29 games. This saw them continue to lead the NL standings with a lead of 3 games over their nearest rivals. The team managed this good record with excellent form at the start and end of the month. The start of the month saw the team sweep the Boston Beaneaters 4-0 at home before gaining a 1-1 home series tie against the Chicago White Stockings. They then swept the New York Gothams 4-0 at home before seeing a minor slump in form during the mid month period. This mid month slump saw the team pick up a 1-2 loss at home to the Philadelphia Quakers and a 1-3 road trip loss against the Cincinnati Red Stockings before finishing it with a 1-2 road trip loss to the St Louis Browns. The form picked up at the end of the month as the Atlantics managed a 2-2 home series tie against the Philadelphia Quakers before sweeping the Boston Beaneaters again 3-0 on the road. They finished the month by winning both games of a 2 game home stand against the St Louis Browns. The month saw excellent form on both sides of the team. Dave Orr gave a good showing as he picked up 43 hits from 121 at bats in 29 games. He scored 29 runs and 27 RBI's for an average of .355. This earned him the NL Batter of the Month Jim Whitney picked up the NL Pitcher of the Month award as he won 11 games from the 15 he started. He pitched 130 innings which saw him give up 28 earned runs and 105 hits for an ERA of 1.94 The team decided to alter the teams make up during the month. Firstly they traded 26 year old Left Fielder Joe Hornung to the Washington Nationals in exchange for 31 year old Pitcher U Edwards and 23 year old Left Fielder Charlie Briggs. The fans are not sure about this deal as it weakens the batting line up without much in return. The second trade in the month saw 25 year old Catcher Eddie Fusselback to the Philadelphia Quakers in exchange for 33 year old Pitcher U McDoolan and 23 year old minor league First Baseman Bill White. The fans are again scratching their head on why the team made this deal. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1884 While the fans are pleased the Red Stockings continues to show a strong performance during May they worry they might be starting to slip out of the pennant race as they lose a little ground to the leaders. The team managed to win 17 games from the 29 games played during the month. This has seen them fall back to 3rd place in the NL table, 3.5 games behind the leaders. The teams form was up and down all month as they struggled to find consistency. They went 2-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys before gaining a 2-0 road trip win against the Philadelphia Quakers. The inconsistency continued with a 2-2 road trip to the St Louis Browns and a 1-2 loss at home to the New York Gothams. Up next came a 3-1 home series win against the Brooklyn Atlantics before the team went 1-2 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters and 2-2 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings. The month finished with a 2-1 home series win against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and a 2-0 home series win against the Boston Beaneaters. He scored 16 runs and 17 RBI's for an average of .333. The team suffered 3 big blows during the month as they lost Third Baseman George Pinkney for 4 weeks with a fractured thumb, Second Baseman Fred Dunlap for 3 weeks with a hamstring strain and Pitcher Hank O'Day for between 3 and 4 weeks with a sprained ankle. The team also traded 23 year old Centre Fielder Charlie Berry to the washington Nationals in exchange for 28 year old Pitcher John Valentine. 1st June 1884 The fans of the Blues are starting to dream of another pennant as their team continues its good form. The Blues picked up 23 wins from their 29 games. This sees them top of the AL table with a lead of 3 games. The teams form was poor to start the month as they went 1-3 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics and 1-1 on the road to the Louisville Eclipse. The form then picked up markedly as they went 4-0 at the Washington Nationals and 3-0 at home to the Detroit Wolverines. The form dipped slightly in the next series as they went 2-2 at home. The team didn't lose another game all month as they went 3-0 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles, 4-0 on the road to the Chicago White Sox, 3-0 at home to the Philadelphia Athletics and 2-0 at home to the Baltimore Orioles. The team was full of stars during the month as they picked up both big monthly awards. The AL Batter of the Month award went to Roger Connor. Connor picked up 36 hits from 119 at bats in 28 games. He scored 22 runs and 29 RBI's for an average of .303. Jim McCormick was in excellent form on his way to the AL Pitcher of the Month award. He won 13 games from the 15 he started while pitching 127.2 innings. He gave up 101 hits and 29 earned runs for an ERA of 2.04. The team suffered a nasty blow to their ongoing fortunes as they lost star Catcher Charlie Bennet for the season with a fractured ankle. He will be out of action for 3 months. The team also traded 35 year old Right Fielder John McMullin and 21 year old minor league Left Fielder Tom Ryder to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 28 year old Short Stop Jacob Doyle. 1st June 1884 The fans were happy to see the team put up a winning month in May but are a little worried that the overall form may not be good enough to have a run at the pennant. The team won 17 of the 28 games played. This has left them in 3rd place in the AL table, 8.5 games behind the leaders. The team started the month in average form as they went 3-1on the road to the Chicago White Sox and 1-1 at home to the Cleveland Blues before going 2-2 at home to the Philadelphia Atheltics. They picked it up a little with a 3-0 road trip win against the Boston Americans before going back to average with a 2-2 home series against the Baltimore Orioles. This average form continued with a 1-1 home series against the Detroit Wolverines and a 2-2 home series against the Washington Nationals. They finished the month by going 1-2 at home to the Chicago White Sox and 2-0 on the road to the Detroit Wolverines. The solid month for the team was led by the pitching. The best of these was Larry Corcoran. Corcoran pitched 117 innings in his 14 starts to win 8 games. He gave up 141 hits and 41 earned runs for an ERA of 3.14. Some good news was forthcoming from the treatment room as Second Baseman John Shetzline returned from injury. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1884 The fans of the Gothams continue to see their team make steady progress through the season after a month of two halves. The team managed to win 15 of their 28 games. This leaves them positioned 4th in the NL table 5.5 games behind the leaders. The first half of May saw the Gothams in poor form as they managed only 5 wins to 11 losses. They went 3-1 at home to the St Louis Browns before losing 0-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and then being swept 0-4 on the road to the Brooklyn Atlantics. They managed a 2-1 road trip win against the Cincinnati Red Stockings before a 1-3 home loss to the Chicago White Stockings. The second half of the monht was much better for the team as they went 2-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers, 3-1 at home to the Boston Beaneaters and 2-1 on the road to the St Louis Browns before finishing the month with a 2-0 home series against the Philadelphia Quakers. Second Baseman Ed Andrews put up an excellent month with the bat. He claimed 37 hits from his 115 at bats in 27 starts. He scored 18 runs and 10 RBI's for an average of .322. 1st June 1884 The fans of the Athletics are enjoying seeing their team continue to push for the pennant as they chase the leaders. The team went 17-10 during the month of May to move into second place in the AL table. This leaves them 3 games behind the leaders. The month started with a 3-1 series win against the Cleveland Blues before splitting a 2 game home series against the Detroit Wolverines 1-1. The next 2 series were also split as they went 2-2 on the road to the Louisville Eclipse and 1-1 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles. They managed to beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 at home before splitting a road trip to the Chicago White Sox 1-1. The team swept the Boston Americans on the road 4-0. The team finished the month with a 0-3 road trip loss to the Cleveland Blues and a 2-0 home series win against the Chicago White Sox. The stats for the team this month were a bit mixed from the plate so it is good that the pitching showed solid performances. The best of these came from experienced starter Pud Galvin. Galvin picked up 9 wins from his 14 starts with 130 innings pitched. He gave up 110 hits and 28 earned runs for an ERA of 1.94. There was a blow to the line up during the month as Short Stop Pop Smith was lost for between 5 and 6 weeks due to a torn hamstring. The team may also have traded away their future as they sent minor league players 22 year old Left Fielder Conny Doyle, 23 year old First Baseman Jay Faatz, 23 year old Left Fielder Steve Behel and 22 year old Catcher U Loughlin to the Washington Nationals in exchange for 22 year old Pitcher John Horan. The fans are excited to watch Horan pitch but are a little upset over what it cost to get him. Minor League player Charlie Barber has been handed an 80 game drugs ban after being caught with illegal substances. Nobody has said what those drugs were. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1884 The fans of the Quakers continue to see their team struggle at the bottom of the NL table. The team maanaged to pick up 12 wins from their 28 games in May. This has seen them move into 7th place in the NL table, 13 games behind the leaders. The month started very poorly for the Quakers as they were swept 0-4 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings. They also lost 0-2 at home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings before getting a 2-2 home series tie against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The form saw an upturn after this as they went 2-1 on the road to the Brooklyn Atlantics and 2-2 at home to the Boston Beaneaters. They still showed their weaknesses though as they went 0-2 at home to the New York Gothams before again bouncing back with a 3-1 home series win against the St Louis Browns. They managed to sweep the Chicago White Stockings 3-0 at home before finishing the month with another 2 losses to the New York Gothams on the road. Left Fielder Ed Swartwood continues to show how good a hitter he is. He picked up 36 hits from 107 at bats in 27 starts. He scored 19 runs and 16 RBI's for an average of .336. Frank Fennelly also had a good month as he picked up the NL Rookie of the Month award. Their was good news on the injury front as Art Monk and Ed Rowen returned to action. This was off set though by the loss of Third Baseman Pat Callaghan who will be out for 2-3 weeks with Shoulder Tendinitis. The team traded 33 year old Pitcher U McDoolan and 23 year old minor league First Baseman Bill White to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 25 year old Catcher Eddie Fusselback. 1st June 1884 The Alleghenys continue to keep their fans in a state of disappointment as they go from bad to good and back again. The month of May saw more bad than good as the team managed only 11 wins from their 27 games. This has seen them positioned 6th in the NL table, 10.5 games behind the leaders. The month started well for the team as they went 2-2 at home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings and 2-0 at home to the New York Gothams before a 2-2 road trip to the Philadelphia Quakers and a 2-0 road trip to the Boston Beaneaters. This though was another false dawn for the fans as the teams form then dipped markedly as they went 0-4 at home to the St Louis Browns and 0-2 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings. The end of the month didn't bring much better fortunes as the team finished with a 2-2 road trip to the Brooklyn Atlantics and a 1-2 road trip to the Cincinnati Red Stockings before a final 0-2 at home to the Chiacgo White Stockings. While the t4eams performance was average during the month the players themselves couldn't find form to prove they are playing well. This means we will not be picking a star this month. 1st June 1884 The fans of the St Louis Browns are starting to find that they are getting used to average ball from their team. This is due to the fact that the team seem to have good days and bad days during a month and cannot find the consistency the fans would like. The team went 14-15 during the month of May to be positioned in 5th place in the NL table, 7 games behind the leaders. May started slowly for the Browns as they went 1-3 on the road to the New York Gothams before a 1-1 road trip to the Boston Beaneaters. The form started to pick up after this with a 2-2 home series tie against the Cincinnati Red Stockings and a 2-1 home series win against the Chicago White Stockings. The team finally hit top form in the month with a 4-0 sweep of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys on the road followed by a 2-1 win at home to the Brooklyn Atlantics. Just as the fans thought their team was coming right the form then disappeared again. They went 1-3 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers and 1-2 at home to the New York Gothams before finishing the month with a 0-2 road trip loss tpo the Brooklyn Atlantics. Second Baseman Pete Browning continued his good season during May. He managed to get 39 hits from 123 at bats in 28 game starts. He scored 21 runs and 20 RBI's for an average of .317. 1st June 1884 The Washington Nationals fans saw an improving picture from their team in May as they started to play some average ball. The team picked up 13 wins during the month while giving up 16 losses. The fans hope this is the start of the improvement. The team now sits 6th in the AL table, 17.5 games behind the leaders. The month started with the team in excellent form as they beat fellow strugglers the Detroit Wolverines 4-0 on the road. This though didn't last as they went 1-1 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles before being swept themselves 0-4 by the Cleveland Blues. This was followed up by a 1-2 home series against the Chicago White Sox and a 1-3 road trip to the Philadelphia Athletics. The poor form continued with a 1-2 home series against the Boston Americans before they managed a 2-2 road trip against the Louisville Eclipse. The month ended with a 1-2 loss at home to the Detroit Wolverines and a 2-0 road trip win against the Boston Americans. On a month that was solid for the team there were very few stars in the team. The best player on the month was the returning pitcher Charlie Sweeney who showed that his long term injury hasn't affected his abilities. He managed to pick up 8 wins from his 14 games played. He pitched 128 innings and gave up 104 hits along with 16 earned runs for an ERA of 1.13. Billy Sunday is having a horrible season. He returned from injury mid month only to see his season finished at the end of the month with a fractured ankle. He will miss 4 months. The team also lost Left Fielder Ed Kennedy for 2 weeks with an intercostal strain. Jon Morrison received 2 game suspension for arguing with umpires and then rubbishing them in after game comments from one game during May. The team decided to try and rejuvenate their team during the month. They traded 31 year old pitcher U Edwards and 23 year old Left Fielder to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 26 year old Left Fielder Joe Hornung. The fans are looking with some excitement at Hornung. They also sent 22 year old Pitcher John Horan to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for Left Fielder Conny Doyle, First Baseman Jay Faatz, Left Fielder Steve Behel and Catcher U Loughlin. The fans are not happy about this as they think Horan could have been the pitcher of the future for the team. Pitching Batting |

The team managed to win 18 of the 24 games they played during the month. This has seen them move to the top of the NL with a 3 game lead. The teams excellent form started with a win in the final game of the road trip to the St Louis Browns. The second half of the month started with a 2-2 home series against the Cincinnati Red Stockings followed by a 2-0 road trip against the Philadelphia Quakers. They finished the month with a 3-1 road trip against the New York Gothams. The side of the team that showed the best skills all month were the pitchers. The best of these was starter Mickey Welch. June 1884
1st July 1884 The fans of the White Stockings saw their dreams of a pennant run slip during June as their team put together a bad month. The team managed to pick up 10 wins from their 26 games. This saw them slip back in the NL table to 3rd place with a long 12 games between them and the leaders. The month started with a road trip win against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys before the tema went 1-1 at home to the Boston Beaneaters. They followed this up by being swept 0-4 by the Brooklyn Atlantics and going 2-1 at home to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The first half of the month finished with them again being swept 0-4, this time by the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The second half of the month started with a 3-1 home series win against the New York Gothams and a 3-0 sweep of the St Louis Browns before the team fell back with a 0-4 road trip loss to the Boston Beaneaters and a final loss at home to the pittsburgh Alleghenys. Short Stop Jack Glasscock again showed why he is an All Star and major part of the White Stockings team. He managed to pull in 39 hits from his 111 at bats in 25 games. This led to him scoring 24 runs and 9 RBI's for an average of .351. While Glasscock was the best according to this paper the NL voters decided that Harry Stovey was the best in the NL and awarded him the NL's Batter of the Month award. We are not quite sure why but it is their choice. The team got some good news early in the month as they had Second Basemen Gid Gardner and Jack Burdock and Centre Fielder Pete Hotaling return from injury. The bad news returned later in the month though as they lost starting Pitcher Harry Salisbury for 2 weeks to a sprained ankle and also lost Right Fielder Fred Lewis for 2 weeks due to a strained oblique. Lewis returned just as the month ended. The team traded 31 year old right fielder Holly Hollingshead to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in exchange for 35 year old First Baseman Jim Carleton. The following White Stockings made the NL All Star Squad. They were Third Baseman Ezra Sutton and Short Stop Jack Glasscock. Pitching Batting |
