1987 Divisional Series Results
American League Divisional Series Chicago (A) (92-70) squeaks bys Baltimore (99-63) in 5 games Unlike 1986, Two impressive outings fromJohn "Buckshot" Skopec, including a 2-1 decision in Game 5, are enough to down the Terrapins. Chick Fullis leads the Sox with 5 RBI. Hollywood (96-66) shackles Detroit (95-67) in 5 games Lou Gehrig is a surprising non-factor in the series, batting only .200 with 1 RBI. Detroit appears to be headed to the ALCS with a 4-3 lead in the 9th of Game 5, when Willie Stargell comes in and rockets a walk-off pinch-hit 3 run bomb to send the Stars to their first postseason series victory in only their 3rd year. National League Divisional Series Brooklyn (99-63) sweeps St. Louis (92-70) in 3 games Three taters off the bat of Ralph Kiner are enough to send the Cardinals home to their mommy. The Superbas will certainly enjoy the extra days of preparation as all the other series went 5 games. Buffalo (96-66) defeats Cleveland (N) (93-69) in 5 games A monster series from Bisons' leftfielder Phil Bradley is the main attraction of the series. Bradley is a one-man wrecking crew, batting .563 with 3 jacks and 8 runs knocked in, including a 4 for 4, 5 RBI performance in Game 5....just when it counted most. |

1987 League Championship Results
American League Championship Series Hollywood (96-66) spanks Chicago (A) (92-70) in 5 games The upstart Stars, only 3 years removed from expansion, explode for 15 homeruns over the 5 game series, beating the White Sox rotation into a bloody paste on the way to their first World Series. National League Championship Series Brooklyn (99-63) corrals Buffalo (96-66) in 5 games Brooklyn makes it look easy in 5 games, winning Games 1, 3, 4, and 5 in blowouts. Their only loss, in Game 2, came at the hands of a masterful 3 hit performance from Buffalo's veteran pitcher Frank "Flossie" Oberlin. Last edited by metsgeek; 06-08-2004 at 08:03 PM. |

I guess noone cares
I'll be checking in on a borrowed computer over the next few days, when social obligations don't prevent me, but there won't be any updates until I return on the 16th. |

1987 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
HOLLYWOOD STARS (89-73) - In three short years, the expansion Hollywood team has become the premiere offensive team in the majors. Their lineup boasts three superstars in Lou Gehrig (.311, 32 HR, 132 RBI, 19 SB), Rick Monday (.341, 27 HR, 135 RBI), and Bobby Grich (.365, 36 HR, 135 RBI, .455 OBP). Their pitching staff isn't as dominating, but they do boast an ace in Bob Emslie (22-7, 2.81 ERA, 86 K). Their main weakness is their bullpen, which is patchwork at best. Not one pitcher has more than 10 saves for them. BROOKLYN SUPERBAS (99-63) - The Superbas are no strangers to the postseason, and hope to regain the crown after a three-year hiatus. Their big bopper is of course Ralph Kiner (.276, 58 HR, 159 RBI, 16 SB), but Will Clark (.314, 29 HR, 136 RBI) and J.D. Drew (.333, 31 HR, 123 RBI, 29 SB) could both star on other squads. The Superbas have a definite advantage on the mound, though, with 3 pitchers who could be aces on most other teams. 24 year-old Jack Russell (21-8, 3.21 ERA, 89 K) acts like a veteran, whereas 34 year-old Red Ruffing (19-4, 2.30 ERA, 222 K) pitches like a young fireballer. This year's 9th overall pick, Roger Nelson (18-6, 3.00 ERA, 246 K) made it to the majors almost immediately and seems a shoo-in for NL Rookie of the Year. PREDICTION - The Superbas' staff and Kiner's bat is just too much for the Stars. Brooklyn tarnishes the Hollywood glitz in 5. |

1987 WORLD SERIES RESULTS
Game 1 Brooklyn 6 - Hollywood 1 Jack Russell pitches 8 innings of shutout ball, before the Superbas break open the game with 4 runs in the 9th off of Woodie Fryman. Game 2 Brooklyn 7 - Hollywood 4 Eddie Collins leads Brooklyn with 3 hits as the Superbas put 5 runs on the board in the 1st before the Stars even get up to bat. The rest of the game is put on cruise control as Brooklyn takes a 2 game lead in the Series. Game 3 Hollywood 7 - Brooklyn 8 Ralph Kiner jacks one out for 3 RBI in the 4th, but it takes a walkoff single by Pat Callahan to send Brooklyn to their 3rd straight win. Hometown fans begin the chant for a sweep. Game 4 Hollywood 6 - Brooklyn 0 It appears the Superba fans spoke too soon as Hollywood's Rick Reuschel shuts down the Brooklyn bats for 7 2/3 innings to lead the Stars to their first win in the Series. Game 5 Hollywood 3 - Brooklyn 1 Bob Emslie combines with the bullpen to win the second game in a row for the Stars. The momentum has clearly shifted and Brooklyn is beginning to worry as the Series heads back to Cali. Game 6 Brooklyn 11 - Hollywood 3 Brooklyn blots out the Stars with homers from Will Clark, J.D. Drew, and Pat Callahan as they easily coast to the Series crown. 1987 CHAMPIONS - BROOKLYN SUPERBAS 22ND CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MVP: J.D. Drew - .458, 1 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 5 RBI Last edited by metsgeek; 06-28-2004 at 02:44 AM. |
