Gene McCann
Gene McCann pitched for Brooklyn in 1901-02 with a 3-5 record and 2.95 ERA. The Sporting News once remarked, "Always an impeccable dresser, McCann was distinguished by a white tie. He never would tell why he settled on that color, but it was his one affectation."

Slats Jordan
Slats Jordan had two sips of coffee with the old Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and 1902 as a first baseman and as an outfielder, respectively. However, Jordan was never more than a substitute (he played in one game near the end of the season in each of 1901 and 1902). - bRef Bullpen wiki

Larry Hoffman
Larry Hoffman played six games for the Chicago Orphans in 1901. That's all the bRef Bullpen wiki has for him...

Sam Fletcher
Sam Fletcher pitched one game for the Brooklyn Superbas in 1909 and two games for the Cincinnati Reds in 1912. According to his World War I draft registration, he was working as a bartender in Harrisburg, PA. He never shows up in any documents after that, making it possible he died in the influenza pandemic that swept across the United States in 1918, - bRef Bullpen wiki
Redid the facegen. Used the poor quality team photo cut-out (which looks like it got compressed north-to-south) to create the .fg but then shaped it look like the angled photo of him long-tossing. |

Lee Quillen
Lee Quillen started his professional baseball career in 1902 with the minor league Minneapolis Millers of the newly formed American Association. In 1906, he had a breakout year with the Lincoln Ducklings in the Western League, hitting for a .350 average. He was sent to the major league White Sox towards the end of the season and played four games for the eventual World Series champions. The following year, he hit just .192 as Chicago's backup third baseman. - Wikipedia

Billy Lush
Billy Lush bounced played for Washington in the NL in the late 19th c. then moved on to the Tigers and Naps. He also has the distinction of having coached several great collegiate teams in the Northeast. He is credited with helping Eddie Collins break-in to the majors. Lush operated a ballclub in Plattsburgh, NY and another in Rockville, CT, and in both places had invited the young Eddie Collins to play on the team. Connie Mack asked Lush to bring Collins to meet him, and the rest was history. - bRef Bullpen wiki

Pete Loos
Pete Loos appeared in one game in the brand-new American League in 1901. Sporting Life called him a "local amateur pitcher".
Loos made his debut - and it turns out his only major-league appearance - for the Philadelphia Athletics against the Boston Americans on May 2nd. Connie Mack put in Loos to rest his staff. A correspondent for The Sporting News reported that "the strain of a championship contest was entirely too much for the youngster … who was utterly unable to locate the plate." "[Loos] pitched 18 consecutive balls without a strike, filling the bases, forcing one run in and having two on the man at bat when he was unceremoniously yanked out of the box." After that one inning, he was replaced, never to don a major-league uniform again. In that game, the Boston Americans managed to score 21 runs over the first three innings on their way to a 23-12 win over the A's. Same facegen but colorized and tweaked. Tough face to get perfect but if you are seeing this facegen in your game you need to start trading for an arm anyway... |

Heinie Beckendorf
On joining the Tigers in 1909 as a backup catcher, The Sporting Life reported: "Beckendorf in particular seems to have the making of a sure big leaguer. While his batting does not promise much, he has learned considerable from Hughey Jennings in this respect. His throwing is sensational, his demeanor behind the bat inspiring and his fleetness of foot considerable in a chap so stockily built." After two years he moved on to the Senators. On a personal note, Heinie married his childhood sweetheart in 1910 with the Detroit Free Press reporting that news of the wedding cast a "pall of gloom ... [f]or be it known that Mr. Beckendorf is there strong with the fair sex, and was much admired of many of Detroit's fairest daughters."
I didn't see a facegen for him in the pack (or at least one with the correct ID Last edited by LansdowneSt; 09-12-2021 at 03:22 AM. Reason: explained why no "before" picture |

Yup. That happens. bRef has corrected it but they don't fix the urls and what matters is how OOTP has it in the database. I always go to the Player Editor and grab it from the game and not bRef anyway when I save the files. That way I know if it is missing (because there is a hole in the database or because the player was never in a non-major league).

OK bud, as we discussed I'm going to forgo the next couple of seasons' FGs to let us catch up. I'm not even going to look to keep the OC on the sideline hahahahaha. The ones that need doing will still be there in a couple years' time.
The only exceptions will be my guys and big-name players. One in the former category is Hub Pernoll 1910-12 if you can do him when you get a sec please. G

Gotta say, Landsdowne, reading your write-ups brings me just as much enjoyment as seeing the improvements you make to these Facegens. Thanks so much!

Emmet Heidrick
At the turn of the 20th century, Emmet Heidrick was one of the best players in baseball. A .300 hitter, he could drop a “tantalizing bunt” or drive the ball to the fence. As a baserunner and basestealer, he was speedy and aggressive. And as an outfielder, “Snags” was considered “the best fly catcher in the profession.” He had exceptional range in center field and a rifle arm. Yet despite these assets, he walked away from major-league baseball at age 28 to focus on his business career.
On January 20, 1916, Emmet died unexpectedly of influenza at age 39. An obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette details the extent of his business empire. At the time of his death, he was president, owner and operator of two coal companies in Clarion; president of a railway company in Kentucky; director of a Pennsylvania manufacturing firm and a West Virginia lumber company; and co-owner of a telephone company serving several counties in western Pennsylvania. Emmet’s business acumen was passed on to his son Gardner, who co-founded Heidrick & Struggles in 1953, one of the first executive recruiting firms. - SABR Redid the facegen. I could probably tweak it for another hour but am putting my pencil down as it were. Uses his MLB Historic ID in the game, Thanks, BigRed! Most of the players are pretty darn obscure so I try to add a little color to the postings. Glad folks enjoy it

Highball Wilson
Wilson made an appearance for the infamous 1899 Spiders, pitching a complete game and - typical of the Cleveland team that year - losing. He spent the 1900 and 1901 seasons with the Norwich Witches of the Connecticut State League, then resurfaced with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1902. During his brief stint in the A's rotation, he compiled a 7–5 record, helping the team to the American League pennant. Then on to the Senators for two years going 7-21.
Redid the facegen doing my best to try and balance what I saw in the two photos. |

Hub Pernoll
Hub Pernoll joined the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League in 1907 under the name "Buster." At the time, The Oregon Daily Journal described him as a short, stout 19-year-old who had learned to throw a curve in the mountains near Grants Pass, Oregon. He went on to join the Tigers with the Detroit Free Press describing him thusly: "Pernoll is an extremely stocky pitcher, burly as George Mullin ever was before he adopted his present scheme of training. He pitches with a peculiar short jerk motion, using no body swing, but getting the speed. He does it with his muscles alone." After baseball, he operated the Owl Billiard Parlor in Grants Pass for 25 years.
I didn't have a facegen in my pack. I didn't completely smooth this one out. Sometimes one loses too much facial character doing so, so I held back a bit. |
