For game purposes, don't you still have to put this value in the Historical ID or historical minor league ID to get the game to find it? It doesn't look at BBRef field, does it?

In this order, the game should look to 1) the Historical Minors ID code for the fg file, and if there is no fg file so named, it looks next to 2) The Historical ID (essentially the bref import code) and lacking an fg with that name, it checks next for 3) First_Last.fg

Where do you find the minor league ID? I'm assuming the BBRef ID is the page name in the link to BBRef, but where are you getting those other IDs in your file names? I'd like my database to be as accurate as possible.

And thanks for doing these. I especially like being able to get rid of zombies.

The Historical Minors ID I think is what the game calls it. It is on the player editor page a bit above the Twitter handle (I’m away from the computer atm). It should align with the bRef page web address that has the minor league and foreign stats of a player. The one exception are NeL players who have invented OOTP IDs though that will get aligned eventually. I think the reference to “fake” is when the CU Facepack has an old ID. Most of those are getting cleared out to align with bRef. But the old code can sometimes be found in their retired page in the QuickStart which has its own database. The correct code is found in the historical database. Sometimes when AESP sees a conflict, he will ignore the Minors code and save it as the bRef MLB ID but it will only then come up if the user has no file with the Minors ID in the fg files folder, as the Minor ID is the highest priority for loading. AESP may respond too but I think he’s probably busy doing his annual 19th century OOTP historical replay as we speak…

Thanks for that explanation, though I'm not sure I'm completely clear. When I'm trying to update the players in this thread, typically the only spot I see any entry before adding Pres' is in the Historical ID field (not Historical Minors ID), and the value there seems to align with the BBRef link provided by Pres. But that goes straight to the player's main page on BBRef. I guess a lot (most?) of these old players wouldn't have Historical Minors (or foreign) IDs, but I'm still not sure where Pres is coming up with a completely different ID for the filename than the BBRef link.

So even if a player never played in the minors, I've always seen them have a secondary bRef page. So, here's an example, Mel Ott never played in the minors but he has a bRef "Minors" page (called "Career" page) and a corresponding code in the web address. It is on the same header bar as manager stats, splits, game logs, finders & advanced stats and "more". When you link to it, it looks like this:

And that "ott---001mel" corresponds to the Historic Minors ID in the game and that is the file name (ott---001mel.fg) that the game will look for first in trying to populate a facegen for him. If it finds nothing, it will look for "ottme01.fg". I think it is looking to the "Historical ID" field but that's almost always the bRef code too. Absent any file so named, it will go to its third choice "Mel_Ott.fg"

Sometimes, in the CU Facepack where we get our before screenshots, we load a picture that doesn't have the file name that the game currently uses - it used to use it - but doesn't anymore and no one has yet made a replacement. A good example of this might be "Bucky Dent".

So, the game is looking for "dent--001rus.fg" and then if nothing, it loads any file called "dentbu01" and lastly "Bucky_Dent". But the only file there might be called "dent--001buc" in the CU Facepack - and if, so, it's a dead file just causing clutter in your fg_files folder. No one ever cleans those out though because if they are in the CU Facepack, it will just reinstall again on the next update. This is a common problem as a bunch of files for facegens have suffixes like mik for Mike (when it is likely mic for Michael, or joe instead of jos for Joeseph). I reckon if AESP doesn't have confidence in the Historical Minors ID, he just saves it as the file using the number two in the pecking order name convention, the one that aligns with the Historical ID.

It is true, many of the old players didn't have that Historical Minors ID populated but they were updated a year or so ago and I think many do currently - if not all.

Long time no see... to make a long story short I can't use the old version of FGM so I can't clean the FGs as much as I'd like and because of that most of my FGs aren't that great. But if I do one that is a real improvement I'll post it.
