Does Tim MacCarver want to marry the Beard Sox? He sounds awfully in love with them.

Benoit one good year same thing

the last decent anchor you go back to the 80s willie hernandez and we got 3 good years out of him before he flopped
You need a clone of John Hiller. Seriously underrated pitcher.

Nuts! We've still got Max and Verlander. The series is far from over.

Indeed. I'd say it's still 50-50 odds.

My dad loved Hiller. I have fond memories of him taking me to game and he always wanted to see Hiller get into the game. John had a habit of making all games interesting as well. I doubt anyone will ever match Todd Jones in that department though.

Met John Hiller when my family was on vacation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he lived at the time. He was a local favorite in the very small village (~300 people in a spread-out area), where he pitched for the local baseball team. Can't remember how old he looked, maybe in his late 40's.

(When you're around 12, everyone older than you looks like they're in their late 40's, ha.)

We were in the local watering hole, which was basically the center of life in that place (only other business was a gas station, everything else had dried up by then), and he came in after a game. My Grandpa, who was friends with him, introduced us. He shook my hand and gave me an autographed baseball (sorry to say, got lost in a move. ), I'll never forget that meeting.

(Apologies for the lateness of posting; been quite sick for the last few weeks, it's a struggle to keep up at times. Sorry, guys.)

Boston 4, Detroit 3. [Boxscore]

Summary: Sox inch Tigers to take lead in series.

Pitching: Sanchez was a bit inefficient in this one as only 68 of his 108 pitches went for strikes, not his usual style. Surprisingly, he issued no walks, but the Sox pounced on his mistakes, with 4 of their 9 hits going for extra-bases. He did manage to strike out 5 over the 6 innings he worked.

Taking the loss, his record falls to 1-2, 4.41 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, with 23 strikeouts in 16.1 innings over 3 starts.

Coke came in at the top of the 7th to face Ellsbury in a lefty-lefty match-up, and he did his job, getting Ellsbury on a fly-out to CF. (Would you mind terribly doing that every time you pitch, Phil? Thanks so much, Tiger Fandom will love you.)

Stats: 0-0, 13.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 0.2 innings over 3 appearances.

Veras took over at that point, and kept the Sox under control, allowing only a single as he finished off the 7th and pitched the 8th.

Stats: 0-0, 1 Hold, 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, with 8 K's in 4.2 innings over 5 appearances.

Alburquerque didn't excel in his inning of work, as only 9 of his 18 pitches were for strikes. He walked 2 (1 intentional) and struck out one.

Stats: 0-1, 2 Holds, 4.91 ERA, 1.91 WHIP, with 6 strikeouts in 3.2 innings over 6 appearances.

Offense: Well, one can get tired of saying the same old thing over and over again, but I'll say it anyway. The Tigers, despite getting 10 hits and 3 walks, were unable to capitalize on their opportunities as they stranded 6 on 3-9 hitting with RISP.

Every Tiger, save Avila, enjoyed a hit, but unfortunately, they were all singles.

I'll just the list the ones with runs scored and RBI's to make things easier for everyone.

Miggy, 1-3 (.263), a walk (3) in the 1st and a run-scoring single in the 5th for his 7th RBI of the post-season.

Martinez, 1-3 (.421), a single in the 4th and a walk (1) and run scored (9) in the 6th.

Pena, 1-3 (.333), a run-scoring single in the 6th for his 1st RBI. It was also his first appearance in the post-season.

Jackson, 2-4 (.179), a single in the 2nd; a single and run scored (3) in the 5th.

Iglesias, 1-3 (.182), a single and run scored (2) in the 7th off a GIDP by Miggy.

Defense: Double plays, 1: Infante-Iglesias-Fielder, 4th inning.
Errors, 1: Miggy, fielding, 2nd inning.
Stolen bases allowed: Sanchez-Avila, 2nd inning; Veras-Pena, 7th inning; Alburquerque-Pena, 9th inning.

Next game: Saturday, Detroit @ Boston, 4:37 Eastern. (Unless the NLCS is complete, then the game will be at 8:07 Eastern.)

National TV: Fox. National Radio: ESPNRadio.

Detroit Local Radio: 97.1 The Ticket.
Boston Local Radio: WEEI 93.7, WUFC 1510 (Spanish).

Probable starters: Scherzer (2-0, 2.25 ERA) vs. Buchholz (0-0, 6.17 ERA).

Injury: Avila, left patellar tendon strain. No word on the severity, or if he will be able to play in game 6.

Nolan Ryan is retiring soon. After he leaves do you think we can trick the Rangers into taking Fielder off our hands for Profar and Leonys Martin?

Tim McCarver'a brilliant wisdom on AJ being picked off? "If you're doing a hit and run you can't get picked off." Really, Tim? So it's okay to get picked off any other time? Tim McCarver is horrible.

Blue is not giving the outside black. That's a few strikes he hasn't called strikes.
