Teofilo Stevenson
There's always been speculation/debate as to what Stevenson could have done had he turned professional. Personally, I've always thought he would have been the heavyweight champ for the following reasons.
1) If he turned pro following the 1976 Olympics, whomever was handling him would have spent at least a year getting Stevenson adjusted to the pros. So he would have been ready to crack the upper ranks in 1978. He would have been twenty-six and just entering his athletic prime. 2) Although we look back at the 1970s as a "golden age" for the heavyweight division, by 1978 there really wasn't a great deal of quality out there. Ali was well past his prime. Foreman, Frazier, and Quarry were no longer fighting. Norton's glory days were behind him. 3) The only major roadblocks would have been Larry Holmes and Earnie Shavers. Could he have beaten either or both? Perhaps--perhaps not! How long he could have held the title is another question. Right now, I've just started a mini-universe for Stevenson's pro career. I'm using a rating created by either Rocco or Skye a couple of years ago. It seems to be pretty balanced, and if you want it, you can find it in one of the heavyweight packs at Cornerwork. Just a final note on Stevenson's refusal to turn pro. His statement, "What is a million dollars compared to the love of my people," is rather disingenuous. Comrade Castro and his gang gave Teofilo a two story house in Havana. a five bedroom villa in the town of Delicias, and two cars. Why would Stevenson need to dirty his hands with capitalism by turning pro? |

If you do, you'll recall that they were in a diner getting some hard, dirty looks from the local good ol' boys. I swear this guy was there! Anyway, Ol' Clayman spent the first five years of his career in the Carolinas beating up on the local "talent". In 1979 he left his home turf for Italy where he suffered the ultimate indignity--being stopped by Lorenzo Zanon. For the remainder of his boxing career, he was pretty much a punching bag for young, upcoming fighters like Alonzo Ratliff, John Tate, Greg Page, and Tony Tubbs. Sandman was an appropriate moniker insofar as he was frequently put to sleep by his opponents. |
