You were right, I was thinking about 14 for a division win. The Tigers magic number for a playoff spot would be 9 then.

You don't know what the magic number is.

The magic number tells you how many wins or loses until you clinch the position you are in for the playoffs. So:

The Tigers are in first place in the division. They are only one game up of the Twins. Their magic number is 13 which means that they need a combination of 13 games where the Tigers win, or the Twins lose.

The Twins are in second place in the division, but are in the wild card lead. They are four games up from the team in second in the wild card race. A combination of 10 games where the Twins win, or the White Sox lose.

Basically, if the Twins win 10 straight and the Tigers win ten straight, the Twins and the Tigers have a playoff spot clinched. Then there would just be three more games to determine the divisional leader.

In other words, since the Twins are already 3 more games ahead of the White Sox than the Tigers ahead of the Twins...the Twins are closer to the playoff spot they currently hold.

This probably doesn't make much sense, which is probably why they typically don't do magic numbers for wild card teams (especially when the Wild Card team is just one game out of first place in their division).

What? You can't be in second and have a magic number for the division win.

So yes, the Tigers magic number for a playoff spot is nine...but you don't do it like that. They're magic number is 13 for the division, the Twins magic number is 10 for the wild card. Leave it at that...

I had trouble cheering for Chicago yesterday, but now that Detroit won the first game; I'm gonna have trouble cheering for Detroit to sweep...although cheering for Detroit is easier than cheering for Chicago.

I'd like to win the division, so Detroit can lose the rest.

I'd like Chicago to win the wildcard or the division, so Detroit can also lose the rest.
