1984 Divisional Series Results
American League Divisional Series Baltimore (92-70) defeats Cleveland (A) (99-63) in 4 games Despite their wildcard status, the Terrapins continue their ride towards their 4th title in 5 years. Their postseason experience is obvious as they win Game 4 14-13 after an amazing 9 run 9th inning. Detroit (95-67) defeats Washington (93-69) in 5 games The Tigers roar into the ALCS on the arm of Ed Whitson. With 2-0, 0.79 record, Whitson is named Series MVP. National League Divisional Series Brooklyn (95-67) knocks off Cleveland (N) (97-65) in 5 games In a dramatic ending, the Superbas snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on a 3 run tater off the bat of Carlos May in the top of the 9th of Game 5 to take the game 3-2. Cleveland's ace Harry Krause doesn't allow a run in the series, but he is pulled early in Game 5 in favor of closer George Jeffcoat. Guess who gave up the homer?? St. Louis (99-63) knocks off Buffalo (94-68) in 4 games In an extremely low scoring series, the Cardinals pitchers shackle the Bisons, ruining Buffalo's first postseason appearance in ages. St. Louis closer Greg Minton is the star with a win and two saves, allowing only one hit in three appearances. |

1984 League Championship Results
American League Championship Series Baltimore (92-70) swoops past Detroit (95-67) in 6 games The postseason experience of the Terrapins is simply too much for the Tigers. Baltimore manager Earl Weaver played the entire series like a chess match. Even closer Hal Reniff was brought in to start a game, saving ace Gary Ryerson for a possible Game 7, or to start the World Series. National League Championship Series Brooklyn (95-67) squeaks by St. Louis (99-63) in 7 games The NLCS was much tighter than the American League counterpart, but, in the end, experience proved to be the trump card when replacement CF Dutch Meier hit a clutch 2 run single in the top of the 9th to allow the Superbas to take Game 7 and the Series. The World Series now matches up between the last two baseball dynasties: Brooklyn, who has rings in '74, '76, '77 and '81, and Baltimore who were champs in '80, '82, and '83. 1984 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
BALTIMORE TERRAPINS (92-70) - Never count out the tortoise. Even though this is their weakest team in years, Baltimore has the intangibles that help them win again and again. At the top of the batting order, they have Mike Tiernan (.315, 19 HR, 91 RBI, 77 SB) who has become the top basestealing threat in the game. George Sisler (.277, 13 HR, 96 RBI), Bill Madlock (.284, 17 HR, 78 RBI) and Reggie Jackson (.243, 22 HR, 84 RBI) are also key components to their offense. The obvious leader off the mound is veteran Gary Ryerson (15-9, 1.97 ERA, 184 K). Warren Spahn (18-12, 3.92 ERA, 184 K) is a solid #2 starter, but beyond that, their staff has many more holes than previous years. A threepeat may be difficult to attain. BROOKLYN SUPERBAS(95-67) - These Superbas are no strangers to the post season or the World Series, but it certainly hasn't been easy these past few weeks with their big bopper Ralph Kiner (.305, 33 HR, 82 RBI) out with a ruptured achilles tendon until late October. Carlton Fisk (.301, 19 HR, 102 RBI) and Carlos May (.307, 21, 80 RBI) have been picking up the slack rather nicely, though. Red Ruffing (22-8, 2.25 ERA, 216 K) is top-notch, but the rest of the staff is average, though quite durable. Dick McBride (18-13, 4.12 ERA) and Jack Russell (18-15, 4.03 ERA) will need to step it up to combat the Baltimore magic. PREDICTION - Neither of these teams were favored to win it all, but the expanded playoff format has led to this. My record on predictions has been pretty horrible lately, so I may as well jinx Brooklyn again. Superbas in 7. |

1984 WORLD SERIES RESULTS
Game 1 Baltimore 5 - Brooklyn 7 The Terrpains get out to an early 5-0 lead by the 3rd inning, but it isn't enough as momentum shifts and Brooklyn scores 7 unanswered runs. Carlton Fisk knocks in 3 runs, batting 2 for 4. Game 2 Baltimore 5 - Brooklyn 2 Earl Weaver uses a convoy of 7 Terrapin pitchers to befuddle the Brooklyn lineup and take Game 2 to tie up the Series. Luis Rivas puts it away with a homer and 2 RBI in the 7th. Game 3 Brooklyn 5 - Baltimore 4 Red Ruffing holds the Terps to 3 hits in the first 6 innings as Brooklyn pulls out to a 5-1 lead. The Superbas bullpen nearly lets it get away, though, until closer Jay Ritchie shuts out the lights for his 7th save of the postseason.. Game 4 Brooklyn 5 - Baltimore 6 Jay Ritchie tries to repeat his Game 3 magic once again as he came into the game with a 5-4 lead and 2 outs remaining in the bottom of the 9th. Alas, it was not to be as he gives up 3 hits in 1/3 IP and loses the game on a walkoff single from 38 year-old pinch-hitter Felix Martinez. It has now become a Best-of-3 Series. Game 5 Brooklyn 3 - Baltimore 0 George Kaiserling steps up his game by throwing 8 innings of shutout ball and Jay Ritchie shakes off his Game 4 blues by pitching a 1-2-3 9th, giving Brooklyn a 3-2 Series lead. Game 6 Baltimore 3 - Brooklyn 5 The hometown fans showered ace Red Ruffing with adulation as he schooled the defending champs, allowing only 1 earned run in 8 IP. Jay Ritchie closes out the 9th for his 4th Save of the Series, wiping away any memories of his Game 4 collapse and destroying Baltimore's dream of a threepeat. 1984 CHAMPIONS - BROOKLYN SUPERBAS 22ND CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MVP: Red Ruffing 2-0, 1.29 ERA, 7 K |

It looks like the insanity from 1984 has subsided a bit. Only one player was signed for more than $20M per year. |

1985 Divisional Series Results
American League Divisional Series Chicago (A) (94-68) gets by Baltimore (86-76) in 5 games The White Sox explode in Game 5, scoring 17 runs off an exhausted Terrapin bullpen. Chicago All-Star shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. leads the charge with a homer and 6 RBI. Milwaukee (92-70) defeats Portland (93-69) in 4 games Brewers CF Jason Michaels unloads on Beaver pitching, batting .438 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in the 4 game series. National League Divisional Series Chicago (N) (91-71) upsets Brooklyn (106-56) in 5 games The Orphans unseat the defending champs with superlative performances from Chris Gwynn and Dante Bichette, both of whom seem to have found a way to rattle Brooklyn's rookie phenom Ralph Works. Cleveland (N) (91-71) knocks off Seattle (95-67) in 4 games Behind the dominant pitching of ace Ramon Garcia and the bat of firstbaseman Jason Giambi, the Spiders spin a web directly in the path of the Pilots' flight, ruining their dreams of a crown in Seattle. |

1985 League Championship Results
American League Championship Series Chicago (A) (94-68) eliminates Milwaukee (92-70) in 6 games White Sox fans watched in awe as Roberto Kelly reeled off one of the best ALCS performances ever, batting .543 (13 for 24) with 2 HR and 8 RBI. What is even more impressive is the fact that Kelly has been a platoon player since '82, and has averages only 205 AB per year in that span. National League Championship Series Chicago (N) (91-71) dominates Cleveland (N) (91-71) in 5 games Orphans' catcher Dick Dietz proves to be the difference in the NLCS, batting 10 for 19 with 8 RBI. In Games 3 & 5, Dietz is named POTG as he bats a combined 7 for 8 with 7 RBI. The Windy City is braced for a crosstown World Series. The White Sox last appeared in the Championship in '65, losing to Brooklyn in 7, and the Orphans last appearance was in '62, losing to the Americans in 7. The White Sox last crown was in '47, while the Orphans haven't won since '25. Without a doubt, this will be a hard-fought series. |
