Hey Matt,
You dropped Bud Moore (DET) from the ancestor list when he was injured, and haven't added him back yet. It looks like he has been getting some playing time and hitting .300....

> NL ERA
> 1.99 David Wickersham, Cubs > 2.45 Otto "Kaiser" Kahle, Braves > 2.60 Bourbon Allen, Braves Could be an intesting POTY race: Wicks - 10-8 with a 1.99 ERA Kaiser - 11-5 with a 2.45 ERA Bourbon - 12-5 with a 2.60 ERA Wicks had a great month in June (2.10 ERA), but got stuck with a 2-4 record for the mediocre Cubbies who Matt indicated have a wretched offense. Bourbon and Kaiser, on the other hand, are getting supported by the 46-32 first place Braves. Also, congrats to Bourbon (and scprideandms) - it looks like he got win #300 sometime this month. He came into it at 298 wins and picked up 5 in June. Did he pitch a good game, Matt? John |

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES
July 1935 The Yankees made their presence known, going 19-8 and moving into first. The White Sox proved to be a one-month wonder, going 9-16 in July. Cleveland struggled this month at 12-12, but they are hanging in there just 1.5 games back. In hopes of bolstering their team as they chase down the Yankees, Cleveland acquired pitcher Sam Vidas from Detroit to fill in as their #2 starter. In return, they gave up a lot of prospects - first baseman Carlos "The Colonel" Hulse, solidifying Daniel Lutzke's job at first, and two pitching prospects in Class A. Brooklyn went 14-10 this month but managed to take over first. Not only did they assume the NL lead, but they opened up a 5-game lead over the Braves, who were 9-16 in July. The Giants went 17-9 to surge into 3rd place. They were invigorated by the return of leadoff man Foglesong "Fuzz" Allen, who hit .315 with 15 steals, and ace Cliff Umbaugh, who has won 8 straight starts and was named the NL POTM. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Luke Riley (NYA)! He had a record of 7-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.02 and 3 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Swervin' Ervin Skjerly (NYA)! He batted .422 in 83 AB, with 1 homers and 23 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Cliff Umbaugh (NYG)! Will Miller Watch
Washington Senators 50-54, 6th, 11.5 GB On the Season: .298, 82 H, 40 R, 24 SB On Pace For: 121 H, 59 R, 36 SB 3942 Hits - Needs 58 (140 total) for 4000 (Pace: 3981) 1963 Runs - Needs 37 (77 Total) for 2000 (Pace: 1982) 895 SB - Needs 5 (29 Total) for 900 (Pace: 907) **He was once again removed from the lineup, moving Troge back to 1B and Tjeenk-Willink to LF. Time is slipping away as he tries to reach these records. It's a shame the manager doesn't just call it a lost season and get him in the lineup. He should reach 900 SB, but the other two milestones may have to wait another season. FYI: His ratings do not seem to have dipped at all, so it's simply that the team is putting in the youngsters. |

I wrote in the HOF thread several days back that he needed 22... then saw on the page today that he was at 291 and hadn't noticed that you slipped the updates on the page, and assumed I was wrong with the 22. So I "corrected" the other post, made this one... I'm so confused. ![]() It also looks like I jinxed his POTY campaign. John Last edited by jdw; 05-28-2004 at 05:38 PM. |

He turns 40 in September, and .298/.319/.335/.654 for a LF might prompt Will to retire. The game doesn't seem to have that Pete Rose factor of hanging around long after being washed up. I'm thinking of Jed Burke as a guy who hung it up after a medicore year while within 50 of 3,000 hits. He was younger than Miller.John |

1935 All-Star Game
Braves Field, Boston BOX SCORE Braves catcher Dud Dietzsch started the scoring in front of his home fans with an RBI single in the 2nd. That was it until the 8th as pitching dominated the day. That all ended when the AL put together 4 singles, a sac bunt and a double to start the top of the 8th off Braves starter Babe Goodrum. AL pitchers Luke Riley (NYA), Lewis Lamson (SLA), "Stuffy" Zinn (CHA), Abraham Dickens (PHA) and Rob Teese (CLE) combined to allow just 7 hits as the AL continued their All-Star domination. Although the home crowd was unhappy with the results, they did get to see Braves star outfielder George Ward go 3-for-4. Code:

Matt, wasn't that the 1935 All-Star game?
Story of The General's career, 3-4 in the All-star game but no one else on the team does much and the MVP goes to a guy with two hits on the winners. |

With all the talk about players setting hit records, please note this detail from the July update:
George "The General" Ward, RF, Braves - Ward hit .378 with 11 RBI and 14 runs scored. He also collected the 2000th hit of his career on July 5th against the Phillies' Terry Schukraft. That's 2000 hits before turning 30. Ward continues as the #3 hitter for average in league history. |

The Gazette
Of Douglass, Kansas August 15, 1935 TALK OF THE TOWN Mr. Thomas Grandy, of Wichita, spoke at the monthly meeting of the Businessmen Of Douglass. Mr. Grady spoke of his experience designing the turbines that now run at the recently completed Hoover Dam. The members of the BOD were much impressed with his presentation. Mr. Archibald Schmidt received a letter from his cousin visiting family in Germany. The letter detailed an event that upset his cousin. Apparently when Mr. Schmidt’s cousin was drinking coffee at a Berlin café, a group of rambunctious German youth accosted a woman at a nearby table, calling the woman a “dirty Jew girl.” Mr. Schmidt reports, however, that such events are uncommon in Germany and are not a matter of concern. Hometown favorite John “Lucky” Ryan was recently called up from his minor league team to play with the Cincinnati Reds. In one game against the NY Giants, Lucky hit a double and got a walk in 3 plate appearances. We get this information from his mother. A pie baked by Mrs. Albert Lugen won first prize at the Douglass Ladies Club’s Annual Fund Raiser for the Indigent. The Ladies Club raised $1,000 to help provide food for those unlucky families in town whose men have been unable to find productive employment since the recent economic problems. Since the co-called “Crash of 1929” the Ladies Club has raised $10,319 for unlucky local families. (At least one local upstanding businessman has said that such events, if widely publicized, would cause an influx of “hobos” to the area desiring to take advantage of local good will.) A debate over the recently passed federal law creating a “social security” system occurred at a recent Young Democrats of Kansas meeting in Douglass. Unfortunately, fisticuffs happened afterwards when a local man denounced the new law as socialism and one of the Young Democrats rose up to defend the new law. The fight was quickly broken up and no one was hurt. The police were not called. Last edited by BPS; 05-29-2004 at 01:19 AM. |

August 1935
The Yankees began the month in good shape, but a 14-game winning streak easily distanced them from the rest of the league. The streak included 3-game sweeps of the Red Sox and Browns, a 4-game sweep of the White Sox, and 2 wins each against the Senators and A's. The Indians began the month by winning 3-of-4 against New York but finished the month at 11-19 and dropped to 3rd. The Dodgers and Braves both went 18-12 this month, maintaining their 5-game difference. The Phillies went 19-11 to finally crawl above .500, but they are 10-games back with just 4 weeks of the season remaining. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Luke Riley (NYA)!
