The Colts scored twice in the top of the 12th, but the Gladiators scored 3 times in the bottom half to win. The winning run was scored on an error. IN 12 innings, French allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 5. In 11 innings, Stanley allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. C Jim Granier (30-5.7) had 2 hits and a walk and scored a run.

We begin a 4 game series with manager John Burton (46-3.6) and his Jingoes today. We are 10-2 against them so far this season. We swept them 4 games in Rochester 2 months ago the last time we met. They are last in scoring with 3.7 runs per game (Detroit is 5th with 4.8). They are last in runs allowed with 5.8 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.8). Anything less than a sweep would have to be viewed as a disappointment.

This is definitely a disappointment, to say the least.

McClean sat down the first 12 Wolverines to go to the plate. It's the first time he has beaten us after taking 6 losses.

In 8 innings, McLeod allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.

Zenas Keough (24-4.5) pitched a 1-2-3 9th.

McClean gave us 3 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

Each team made 2 errors.

LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) led off the 5th with a triple, but twisted his ankle sliding into third and will miss about a week. I thought, well at least we are getting the offense started, but the next 3 batters just made outs and left the runner at third. I am starting to think we are not suppose to win the Liberty League this year.

Liberty League:
Troy (4) at Cleveland (2): Miah Turner (24-5.3) (26-23) over Willis Kornfield (32-6.0) (26-23). Turner allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 5. Kornfield allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. 2B Joe Henry (33-9.2) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.

Boston (3) at Washington (1): Charlie Morlock (36-6.7) (19-11) over Lou Townley (23-3.4) (26-28). Morlock allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and a walk. Townley allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Providence (8) at Milwaukee (2): Frank McSherry (30-4.1) (20-21) over Dan Burton (30-4.9) (28-35). McSherry allowed 3 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3. Burton allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. He has lost 8 of his last 9. RF John Froom (37-6.2) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. LF Charlie Gregor (26-5.2) hit a 3-run home run.

Is Bush better than McLeod now? Since the beginning of August, McLeod has a WHIP of 1.09 and Bush has one just under 1.00.

Bush allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. This was his 4th shutout of the season. He is tied for 2nd in the league, but only has made 21 starts. Maybe he should be my number one guy now, but I hate tow switch horses so late in the year. We'll see how it's going when Troy and Boston come to town.

McClean gave us 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

We made 2 errors and Rochester made 4.

Keough pitched an awesome game for us and had to overcome woeful defense behind him. He did not allow an earned run.

Hodges gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.

We made 7 errors and Rochester made 5.

LF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had a hit and a walk, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI, but made 2 errors. 1B Spider Thomas (29-4.6) had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run. SS Sam Swanger (33-4.8) made 3 errors. C Joe Kotlyar (29-6.2) had 2 hits with a double, raising his average to .163.

We begin a 4 game series with manager/CF John Confair (31-6.6) and his Haymakers today. They come in on a roll, having won 5 in a row. We are 7-5 against them on the season so far. The last time we met, we split 4 games with them in Troy back at the first of August. They are 4th in the league in runs scored with 5.1 per game (Detroit is still #5 with 4.8). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 4.3 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.8).

We are going to go with Ed Bush as are #1 starter for the simple fact that he has more stamina than William McLeod (26-5.6) and so we may be able to avoid having Zenas Keough (24-4.5) pitch. Of course, if Bush gets blown up, we will rethink it before Boston comes to town.

We are 5-1 against Turner on the season, but he has only allowed us 21 total hits in his last 5 starts against us. And we still have no Ben Smith (26-6.7) for at least the first 3 games of this series.

When the 2nd batter of the game, SS William Nawrocki (30-5.5) hit a ball over the left field fence, I thought, "Oh! What have I done starting Bush over McLeod?"

Bush allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had 4 (!!) hits and scored 2 runs.

We had 13 hits and made 1 error. Troy made 4.

LF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI, but sprained his knee sliding into third on the triple and will miss a week. So now my lead-off man and my clean-up hitter are both on the shelf at a very critical stage of the season, to understate it slightly. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1), the only reliable hitter left healthy, had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Jackie Porter (31-6.3) had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) hit a triple and scored a run, threw out the only runner who tried to steal and did not allow a passed ball or wild pitch. CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) hit a double and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
New York (3) at Cleveland (4) in 11 innings: Willis Kornfield (32-6.0) (27-24) over Jack Roberts (33-6.1) (4-5). In 11 innings, Kornfield allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. We begin the final series of the season today and it is a big one. 4 games against manager/1B Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) and his Red Caps to determine the champion for the Liberty League in 1885. We are 5-7 against Boston so far this season. The last time we met they took 3 of 4 in Boston at the beginning of August. They are 1st in runs scored with 5.3 per game (Detroit is 5th with 4.7). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 4.1 per game (Detroit is still #1 at 3.8).

Hank Anderson (32-7.7) is back and we sent Zenas Keough (24-4.5) to Syracuse. We do not plan on using Anderson since he hasn't pitched in over a month. But maybe if Bush pitches as well as he did last outing, we might have to.

Charlie Morlock, Bos. (36-6.7) (R 21-12 2.10 8.1-1.7-5.3 H-BB-K/9) vs. William McLeod, Det. (26-5.6) (R 36-14 1.88 6.6-2.7-4.3)

Won - 4 to 3 in 11 innings

3B Chris Van Rooyen (28-3.0) came into this game hitting .159. He was starting because Jack Warren (33-7.2) had not played well at the hot corner and had not hit very much in his time as the starter there. Van Rooyen has played exceptional defense all season, making only 1 error in 1 starts at third, but is not a hitter. Last year, he was a starter playing mostly short, but a lot at third and hit .225. But today, in the 2nd inning, after SS Russell Gardner (31-6.4) reached base on a 2-out error, he crushed an 0-1 pitch over the center field wall for a home run, the 2nd of his career (he hit none last year).

The Red Caps scored a run in the 5th when they knocked 3 hits off McLeod, but were denied a 2nd run when CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) threw out the tying run at the plate.

It stayed 2 to 1 in our favor until the top of the 8th when RF Dan Abrams (27-5.1), who has owned McLeod going 17 for 31 (.548) with 2 home runs, led off with a single. McLeod struck out the next batter and then induced a lazy pop fly to left that LF Ben Smith (26-6.7) dropped, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. After the obligatory passed ball, another fly ball to center tied the game, instead of ending the inning as it should have. The next batter, 3B Mike Stables (29-7.1) tripled to put the Red Caps up 3 to 2. One more fly ball and we went to the bottom of the 8th.

Van Rooyen struck out to lead off and then I pinch-hit for McLeod with Jack Warren, who doubled. Bianco flew out, but 1B Spider Thomas (29-4.6) doubled to tie the game at 3. 2B Jocko Cole (24-6.1) struck out to end the inning.

Ed Bush (25-5.3) came on to pitch in the top of the 9th and ended up pitching 3 almost perfect innings. The only runner to reach base did so on an error.

In the bottom of the 11th, with 2 outs, LF Ben Smith reached on an infield single and then stole second and went to 3rd on the catcher's errant throw. RF Jackie Porter (31-6.3) singled to send the home town crowd into a frenzy.

In 8 innings, McLeod allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5.

In 10.2 innings, Morlock gave us 11 hits, walked none and struck out 6.

We made 3 errors and Boston made 4.

1B Spider Thomas had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) had 2 hits.

For the Red Caps, 3B Mike Stables hit a double and a triple, scored a run and knocked one in. Ex-Haymaker and Hospital poster child CF Jimmy Gerber (34-6.1) cracked a rib making a diving catch and is finished for the season.

New York (2) at Washington (11): Lou Townley (23-3.4) (30-30) over Jack Roberts (33-6.1) (6-6). Townley allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9. Roberts allowed 7 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. New York made 14 errors! LF Ted Steeves (23-4.2) had a hit and a walk and scored 3 runs. For New York, 3B Tacks Strange (31-5.4) had 4 hits, stole a base and scored a run.

Well, what do I do for a pitcher today in this HUGE game? McLeod cannot go. Bush says he is fine, but he pitched 3 innings yesterday. Hank Anderson (32-7.7) says he is ready to take the ball, but he has not pitched in over a month. I guess I will go with Bush as he only threw 35 pitches yesterday.

In the 4th inning, we got the first 2 batters on base, but then one was thrown out trying to steal third and then the other was thrown out trying to steal second.

Anderson sat the Red Caps down in order in the top of the first and RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) led off our half of the inning with a home run. That would be the last time we scored. We had several opportunities, but could never cash in. The last one was in the bottom of the 9th when C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) led off with a single. I sent in Dusty Godwin to run for him. Godwin can't hit, but he can run and play defense, allegedly. CF Fred Bianco (26-6.9) bunted Godwin over to 2nd and then SS Russell Gardner (31-6.4) singled to left center and the game was tied, or so I thought. But Godwin was thrown out at the plate. That bum is now on a train to Syracuse and will never be in a Wolverine uniform again. Gardner went to second on the throw home and with 2 outs, we still had a chance, but P Hank Anderson was due up to bat and I had nothing but left-handed bats on the bench to face the best left-hander in baseball. I sent up Jackie Porter (31-6.3) hoping that maybe, but he struck out and the game was over.

Anderson allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

Peters gave us 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5.
