Since the Tigers seem to get ONE good year of relief. Why don't they just trade them away after that year and get somebody for one year then trade that one away this way we would have consistency in relief corp. at least with the anchor spot.

Todd Jones one good year rest junk
Valverde same thing
Benoit one good year same thing

the last decent anchor you go back to the 80s willie hernandez and we got 3 good years out of him before he flopped

Detroit 7, Boston 3. [Boxscore]

Summary: Bats thump Boston to even series at 2 a piece.

Pitching: Fister kept getting into trouble, but just as important, got out of it, yielding just one run on 8 hits and a walk over 6 innings, striking out 7 Sox along the way.

In securing the win, his post-season record goes to 1-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, with 8 strikeouts in 12 IP spread over 2 games

Coke came aboard in a lefty-lefty situational match-up, and he failed in his task, giving up a single to Ellsbury. The runner counted against him when the next guy didn't hold the line.

This brings his record to 0-0, 27.00 ERA, 3.00 in 0.1 IP in 2 appearances.

After he entered the game, Alburquerque promptly gave up a double to Victorino, allowing Ellsbury to score, but there the bleeding stopped for the moment as Pedroia was induced into grounding out to Cabrera.

His post-season stats stand at 0-1, 2 Holds, 6.75 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 5 strikeouts in 2.2 innings over 5 appearances.

With Ortiz due up at bat, Smyly was summoned, and he did the job as usual, getting a ground-out and a pop-up to end the inning. He went on to toss the 8th, striking out one batter in the process.

That brings his stats to 0-0, 2 Holds, 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, with 3 punch-outs in 3 innings over 5 appearances.

Benoit assumed duties for the 9th and gave another solid impression of Todd Jones and/or Jose Valverde, giving up a ground-rule double and then a triple to the first two batters he faced. Apparently the crowd's displeasure got to him, and he bore down, striking out the next two before getting Ortiz to fly out to right and ending the game.

His record is now 0-0, 3 Saves (1 blown), 6.35 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, with 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings in 6 appearances.

Offense: The lineup re-arrangement worked as the offense came up with 9 hits and 5 walks, scoring the second highest number of runs they've had in the post-season. They stranded 6 on 4-9 hitting with RISP.

Here's who did what (and remember, stats are for the 2013 post-season):

Hunter, 1-2 (.184), with a 2-run scoring double (2 doubles, 2 RBI) in the 2nd.

Miggy, 2-4 (.257), 2 run-scoring singles (2nd and 4th innings), giving him 6 RBI - and 24 in his post-season career with the Tigers, an all-time franchise record. He also had a stolen base (1) in the 4th (!), the 3rd of his post-season career.

Martinez, 2-4 (.429), a single and run scored (8) in the 2nd, and another single in the 7th.

Peralta, 0-2 (.385) with a walk (1) and run scored (2) in the 2nd inning.

Avila, 0-1 (.192), with a walk and run scored (3) in the 2nd, and another walk (8) in the 5th. His low batting average and strikeouts (8) have been compensated somewhat by his walk numbers, giving him a .400 OBP in the post-season.

Infante, 1-4 (.188), a ground-rule double (2) and run scored (1) in the 4th.

Jackson, 2-2 (.143), a single, stolen base (1), and run scored (2) in the 4th. He added another single in the 6th, along with drawing walks in the 2nd and 8th innings (4 walks this post-season).

(Leyland, for the love of all that's holy, keep him in this spot, please!)

Iglesias, 1-3 (.158), a run scored (1) in the 2nd (got on by fielder's choice), and a single in the 8th. He also had a terrific sacrifice bunt in the 4th.

Next game: Thursday, Boston @ Detroit, 8:07 Eastern.

National TV: Fox. National Radio: ESPNRadio.

Boston local radio: WEEI 93.7, WUFC 1510 (Spanish).
Detroit local radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

Probable starters: Lester (1-1, 1.93 ERA) vs. Sanchez (1-1, 4.35 ERA).

Scheduled pitchers (as of the time of this posting) have been updated in the initial post of this thread.

Subject to change, of course.

Ehhh..Mike Henneman was pretty good.

**********

Somewhat ironically after my comments, the Tigers functioned exactly as needed last night. Fast(er) bottom of order got on and the slow guys drove them in. They took extra bases all over the place. Iglesias scoring from second on the modified grounder to Pedroia was case in point. Miggy was ending rallies, not starting them.

Just do that two more times and everything will be fine...

I've always thought that Jackson was a poor choice as lead-off hitter because of his strikeout/AB ratio, but I also realize the Tigers didn't have anyone better.

Now if Iglesias turns out to be a reliable .300 hitter with a lower K/AB ratio than Jackson's, he'd be the perfect choice for lead-off, with his ability to lay down bunt/infield singles and speed.

If Infante does not re-sign with Detroit and Perez wins the 2B job, that should help the Cats in terms of speed... assuming Perez can get on base at a decent clip. This team must get faster in this era of the dominant power pitcher.

I think we need to be realistic when it comes to Iglesias and his hitting. I don't think he will ever be a top of the lineup guy. He came down to earth during the second half of the season. I figure he will be a .225-260.

I would agree here. He never hit in the minors at all. Literally, this is far and away his best professional season ever.

To dork out a little...his highest previous wOBA was .303 (not good) and this year was .327; this year's BABIP was .356 (unsustainable for non-Miggys); his career minor league OBP is .307....etc...

While I won't say guys can't improve, he's primarily a glove guy. Anything he gives you with bat is gravy.

^ This is why I'm so scared the Tigers are going to give up on this guy. Other organizations win with this type of player all the time, but the Tigers always seem to think offense offense offense. So far offense hasn't won us jack. I think it's obvious why the Sox were willing to ship him to Detroit. They have Bogaerts waiting in the wings and wow does he look good. Still think the Tigers made a good trade, but they have to give the kid the job and stick with him.

I did say, "if", yes?

Stranger things have happened in baseball.

Sometimes I think you like to argue just for the sake of arguing, David.
Didn't even think I was arguing...Sorry. Just giving an opinion.

I must have misinterpreted what you said as an argument - my apologies. It's hard to read "tone" (or in my case, body language) online.

Hey, I was actually about to pm you. Felt bad and in no way was I trying to belittle your comment. Gosh, I would love it if Iglesius hits. But, if he doesn't, I sure hope people see his value for what it is.

I'm really hoping Ellsbury used up all his hits last night.

Anybody know a good witch doctor that works cheap? We need a hex on the Red Sox, something on the order of a 50+ year curse.
