ITV preview trivia: Ghana have mounted more quick counter attacks than any other team in this world cup.

if hes gonna break the record, thats not a bad goal to do it on...ultimately looking back at the tournaments he's played in he deserves the record...minus the whole being fat now thing.

1-0 Brazil...Ghana dead.

most goals have been scored in the final 15 minutes, the whole early goal trend didnt start until the knockout phase

1 – Chile 1962 (Chile 2-0 Italy), the “Battle of Santiago”
The original, and worst ever example of bad sportsmanship between two teams occurred in the hosts second group game against Italy.
Italian journalists had started it all by making derogatory comments about their hosts, and within the first 12 seconds the first foul was committed. English ref Ken Aston, who was too weak to control the game, ordered off two Italians, and police had to come on to the field on a number of occasions. The fighting didn’t even finish after the final whistle – as Chile won 2-0, and Italy went back home after being eliminated at the group stage.

2 – Germany 2006 (Portugal 1-0 Netherlands), the “Battle of Nuremberg”
The new version of the Battle of Santiago. Two teams blood thirsty after a fiery Euro 2004 semifinal, which Portugal also won, see to it that referee Valentin Ivanov awards four red cards, a record at a World Cup finals match.
Luis Figo also should have been dismissed for a head butt that Mr. Ivanov only awarded a yellow card for.

3 – Germany 2006 (Australia 2-2 Croatia)
Graham Poll fails to pass the simplest refereeing job of all. After awarding two yellow cards to Croatian Josip Simunic, he fails to send the defender off. He finally does so after Simunic argues with him at the final whistle – making it three yellow cards to a single player, a first at a World Cup finals game.

4 – Germany 2006 (Italy 1-1 USA), the “Battle of Kaiserslautern”
I hope your beginning to realise there is a pattern here. The third and last entrant from the 2006 tournament was the Group E match between Italy and the USA, a game in one of the two “Group of Death”.
Daniele De Rossi chose to take that phrase literally, nearly decapitating Brian McBride with a deliberate elbow to the face. The USA then have two players sent off of their own (at this point, only the fourth time a World Cup finals game has seen three players sent off), and referee Jorge Larrionda then does a complete role reversal after the third red card to Eddie Pope, and from being strict he becomes very lenient, as a number of other infringements could well have led to further dismissals.
Larrionda however does referee two other group games (Portugal/Angola and France/Togo) very well.

5 – Spain 1982 Semi-Final (West Germany 3-3 France, West Germany win on penalties)
The semi-final at Spain ’82 saw Harald Schumacher commit, and get away with, assault on Patrick Battiston.
The German goalkeeper made no attempt to play the ball, instead deliberately clattering into the Frenchman, knocking him unconscious, yet Dutch referee Charles Corver amazingly awarded nothing other than a goal kick.

6 – Spain 1982 (West Germany 1-0 Austria)
Earlier in the tournament, the Germans had been involved in another controversial game.
At this World Cup, the final two group games weren’t played at the same time as they are now.
West Germany had surprisingly lost to Algeria in their opening game, but coming into their final game with Austria, after the Africans had beaten Chile earlier in the day, both teams knew a 1-0 win for Germany would send both teams through to the second group stage.
Horst Hrubesch scored after 10 minutes, and after that both teams just passed the ball between themselves and back to the goalkeeper (back passes were allowed then), and surprise, surprise it finished 1-0.
The crowd booed, FIFA did nothing (sound familiar?).

7 – Mexico 1986 Quarter-Final (Argentina 2-1 England)
Diego Maradona. “Hand of God”. That is all you need to know why this makes my list.
Then later, Maradona shows why he is one of the greatest, by dribbling from the half-way line and seemingly beating 15 English players before slotting past Peter Shilton for what proved the winner.

8 – France 1998 Final (France 3-0 Brazil)
What exactly went on with Ronaldo before the final?

9 – USA 1994 (USA 2-1 Colombia)
One of the darkest days, as after the tournament Colombian defender Andres Escobar is shot dead in Medellin after conceding an own goal in Colombia’s loss to the hosts, a result that eventually eliminated the South Americans at the group stage.

10 – Argentina 1978 (Brazil 1-1 Sweden)
A less well known one. Controversial Welsh referee Clive Thomas disallows Zico’s stunning strike from a corner kick, for what he to this day says “time was up, adding any more time would be cheating”.
Everyone else disagreed. It’s lucky he wasn’t reffing yesterday’s game, as Italy wouldn’t have been allowed to take the penalty.

11 – England 1966 Final (England 4-2 West Germany, after extra time)
The only time the birthplace of football has won the World Cup, and it may well have come down to a linesman’s decision. Azerbaijani (then Soviet) Tofik Bakhramov said Geoff Hurst’s strike had come off the crossbar and gone over the line, and that led to the now famous “they think it’s all over… it is now!” commentary from Kenneth Wolstenholme as Hurst became the first and only player to score a hattrick in a World Cup final.

12 (Sub) – Brazil 1950 (USA 1-0 England)
More famous than infamous, but it shocked the world of football all the same.
The English didn’t even compete at the three pre-war tournaments, and only made their debut in Brazil.
Facing the amateur players of the USA in Belo Horizonte, Joe Gaetjens scored the only goal of the game, as the USA produced in my opinion, the biggest shock in international football history.

oooo piece a candy

Good decision referee.
In the book goes Adriano for a dive, just like the Italian yesterday.
